LD45 — Start with nothing

Juicefruit Orchard by reheated 2019-10-08T15:24:04Z

I'd like to thank @trmrddr for pointing me towards this one so I could experience the juicing for myself. Almost too juicy, but we all know that's not possible. My only complaints are that I wish I didn't have to drag things to sell them (right-click, or ctrl click or something instead?), or that I didn't have to click through text every time I finished juicing a tree. I guess in addition, I didn't see much of a point in upgrading my seeds? It seemed like I already had more seeds than I could ever plant, so I didn't bother upgrading.

Those are super tiny nitpicks though, and I'm glad for having played this quite funny game.

wallpunch by Aurel300 2019-10-09T17:11:38Z

Very smooth. I wish the different rooms visually led into each other a little bit more cleanly (the lighting makes it a little weird), and that there was a little better indication which blocks you can and can't break (I had a hard time picking out the X from the normal cracks, and could never figure out why I would get one versus the other). Those are pretty small nitpicks though, given how nice this game is.

Fruit Mamba by FrozenCow 2019-10-10T13:06:57Z

Is this inspired by Snakebird by any chance? You've put together a fantastic looking package here with some adorable art/sound design, and some pretty fun little puzzles. This could be expanded out into a full thing very easily, I imagine.

Is it intentional that falling into a fruit doesn't seem to eat it?

World Collector by Joe Williamson 2019-10-07T23:08:31Z

Oh my god this is absolutely amazing? I'm pretty sure this is better than at least a few games currently in my Steam library.

My Battle by minibobbo 2019-10-10T13:51:43Z

This is a pretty cool idea, and pretty well made. I encountered an issue when trying to leave the house where the sky loaded over top of the house without actually exiting (this might have had to do with trying to dash/shoot inside the house? I'm not really sure). I also encountered an issue when falling off to the right of the mountain where the screen just went completely black but the music kept playing.

As a super minor tweak, it might be nice if button presses could be held between screens, it felt a little weird to have to re-press the right button every time I went to a new screen.

Aside from those small things, I really enjoyed going through this game: the core gameplay is great, and the music really helps bring the theme across

Armada by diptoman 2019-10-12T15:17:45Z

This is a really cool and super polished idea. This is something I could see myself sinking a lot of time into. If I had to complain about something, it would be that the connection radius feels a little tight, and it's a little frustrating having to connect to ships at the bottom (or top) of the screen, only for a random asteroid to appear from offscreen and immediately destroy the ship+break the connection.

Foxtrot by terryg 2019-10-11T21:43:27Z

Cute looking game! It looks like the double jump might actually be an infinite jump?

Nothing to Say by celia14 2019-10-10T15:38:21Z

Oh my gosh this is so good! I didn't expect to get nearly as engrossed in the game as I ended up being

Dive Dog by eva 2019-10-07T23:55:02Z

I'm a big fan of minesweeper, so I thought this was a pretty neat spin on it. It's a little tedious having to click the arrows to move around, but it was interesting enough to warrant going through a few stages. Nicely done!

Over The Threshold by redcubegames 2019-10-11T18:06:45Z

Really cool idea! Walking around with the character felt a little slow, but I have a hunch that was intentional

Nothing by JoelLikesPigs 2019-10-07T23:34:41Z

Aside from the elevator clip bug, this was a super entertaining and very funny play through. I'm always amazed at what other people are able to get done in so short a timeframe

Dot by Hadi Danial 2019-10-08T18:32:30Z

It's got a really cool art style, but the hitbox not lining up well with the characters makes it kinda tricky to play. Some of the obstacles were surprisingly tough to get past with some tight spacing on some jumps, and it was a little clunky. Some sound effects would've gone a long way, but overall an enjoyable romp

The Island by Sanguis 2019-10-08T15:03:00Z

I ended up having to mute the game because I found the music pretty harsh, but other than that the game was really relaxing to play through. You absolutely nailed the mood you were going for, and I think the graphics played a big role in that.

Designing my ideal little island was super engrossing, too.

The Persistent Thief by Darylsteak 2019-10-08T14:27:10Z

This is really well made, but the control scheme was super awkward to get used to

Real-time Gardener by sebastianscaini 2019-10-08T18:42:49Z

It's bold, and has great art, but I ended up thinking the game was excessively long since I muted it and tabbed away, thinking I'd come back to a grown flower.

Tale of the Toad King by Beebo Studios 2019-10-10T16:49:14Z

What a great little collection of frogs, I love the narration.

Top Seed by Bodaciouslycrazy 2019-10-08T02:21:12Z

This is one of those ideas I wish I had had. The camera and controls could use a touch of work I think, but pretty solid overall

Blankspace by Dominium11 2019-10-09T03:03:55Z

Once I figured out I had to use the arrow keys and not WASD to get past the menu, I really enjoyed going through this one. The collisions and jump seemed a little janky, but it'd be a little unfair to all the other submissions if there weren't any problems.

One question, is it intentional that I'm able to jump my way out of this hole? Jump.PNG I couldn't do it consistently, but I managed to do it at least 3 times. It never happened as my first jump, so it might have been because of getting collided out of the ground or something?

Detective Pawsome by Instafluff 2019-10-09T13:23:18Z

The hints make it maybe a little too easy, but it's a fantastic little twitch game

Split or Steal by Monish Vyas 2019-10-11T14:57:22Z

Simple, with a nice amount of polish. The decisions didn't feel like they really had much by way of consequences though?

Nothing Everything by James Beninger 2019-10-08T16:03:27Z

Had a bit of a tough time getting into it and figuring out what to do, but very enjoyable once I realised what I was doing.

I couldn't figure out how to open up the tasks menu since tapping tab didn't seem to work, but that might have had something to do with my (admittedly extremely weird) keyboard layout?

Nothing Everything by James Beninger 2019-10-08T16:19:49Z

@james-beninger I take it back, it seems to work fine. I was playing on the web and I think I somehow managed to unfocus the game so my keypresses weren't captured, and clicking back on it didn't seem to re-focus it? Probably nothing to worry about.

Spooky: The one who lost everything by Susumu Asaga 2019-10-08T13:29:26Z

It could definitely use some refining in the controls, but you've made quite a bit of content in a fantastically polished package for a LD game. I wish there was more to play through!

Meowmories by Yomissmar 2019-10-10T23:09:27Z

The atmosphere in this game is palpable, and the art is gorgeous. I really like the idea you're going for. If I could make a few suggestions: I found the memories surprisingly difficult to gather, since there's not much of a path to follow between them: I just kind of picked a direction and moved until I found the next memory or hit a wall. I moved right past the first one a few times since it blended in with the spikes a little.

Fast Bastard by eupde 2019-10-09T18:35:42Z

Some very nice looking illustrations for this one. It's too bad you weren't able to make things a little more dynamic with animations/sounds, or with some increased pressure to move quickly.

It feels like there's a lot of potential here

FROGBERT: Road to Culinary Stardom by trmrddr 2019-10-09T02:04:46Z

@shabbyrtist @unlockingcube

It's amazing seeing so much love for what's not just my first Game Jam game, but my first game that actually saw release (and first experience with Unity)! Our artists put in some serious work getting everything looking and sounding as nice as it does!

@kooshy The movement's choppiness is intentional, but at least a bit more pronounced than intended. I *made* the game and still find myself tapping the arrow keys instead of holding them down. Turns out, making the player wait half a second between movements is probably a little too high for it to feel right, haha.

Boulder-Dash by Spice Cabinet 2019-10-11T17:58:03Z

The controls felt a little awkward to use, and the difficulty spike is a little bit sudden, but this is a pretty decent - if unpolished - little game.

Memories of Eleph by Leandroc 2019-10-09T18:57:27Z

Whoa, this is wildly good. The timer feels a little bit too tight, but I love the simultaneously tense and relaxing environment you manage to cultivate in the game. There's a bit of what feels like jank with respawning in rooms, since it seems like it doesn't remember what door you entered from, though maybe that's intentional.

Would You Like To Exist? (HTML5) by EoG 2019-10-08T01:04:26Z

I was really interested in this as an idea, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to grab the nucleobases, or how I managed to connect the them correctly the one time I did it.

Unfortunate too, because I wanted to see where you were going with it. Any advice?

Would You Like To Exist? (HTML5) by EoG 2019-10-08T02:05:54Z

Do the spawn rates slow down as time passes or something? I managed to get most of the bases filled in, but ended up with a while where nothing seemed to be spawning

Would You Like To Exist? (HTML5) by EoG 2019-10-08T02:17:25Z

@Eog I don't think so, but I didn't wait super long. Seemed like as I filled them in they got less frequent, until with like 10 bases remaining I didn't see any spawn for at at least 10 seconds.

Darkness is the nothing by Nadya Khromenkova 2019-10-08T11:58:54Z

There's a really cool atmosphere going on here, but the gameplay being kinda clunky coupled with the lack of feedback for a lot of actions makes it a little hard to get into. Looking forward to that gameplay footage though, the screenshots from later on look rad!

A Field of Flowers by KeithSwanger 2019-10-09T13:16:12Z

What a relaxing experience. For having no real instructions, it does a fantastic job of getting you to explore and discover on your own.

Start Powerless by rob1221dev 2019-10-07T22:53:42Z

Like others have mentioned: the controls are a little finicky, and the level design can be pretty unforgiving at times, but this plays like a pretty polished game with a super clean aesthetic. Kept me interested enough to play through all of it. Nicely done!

Cascade by Goldenglade 2019-10-09T18:15:14Z

I'd love to play more of this game. The last level actually felt quite a bit easier than the one before it. I think because I kept getting stopped everytime I tried to shoot enemies, and I had to keep close to these things dashing towards me. Second time around it all felt rather easy.

The art is absolutely beautiful. While I wish there was a bit more audio, it almost fit better with the clean aesthetic without it.

LD46 — Keep it alive

Woodpunk by elisee 2020-04-23T13:00:12Z

Whoa this is gorgeous. I had some trouble figuring out what I was supposed to do, and ran into an issue where the text was almost impossible to read in full-screen mode (it was fine once I exited), but on the whole it was a super enjoyable experience

MACHINA by Harry Alissavakis 2020-04-24T00:40:17Z

Dang are those UI elements nice and shiny, I'm a sucker for a good fragment shader.

I know other people have mentioned it already, but the intro dialogue dragged a bit, though the humour helped for sure. I ran into some slight control issues, mostly tied to actions not happening where I expected them to (one time in particular, I tried to raise walls to surround me, and ended up raising them in the wrong spot and then being forced to move the player since I had clicked on them).

Aesthetically the game is incredible, though the human's movement took me out of it a bit (nice walk animations are a lot for 48 hours!). I'd have almost preferred if the player were some other floating/rolling robot instead.

The gameplay itself feels like it's got a good amount of depth you could play with, and could definitely warrant expanding out into a full release.

Hope by Darylsteak 2020-04-21T17:13:55Z

The atmosphere and puzzle design were super good here! The movement - especially with ladders - felt a little bit weird to me, but nothing that can't be forgiven in a jam game this ambitious

No crime will happen here! by landosilva 2020-04-22T12:42:33Z

A pretty little game, and a nice adaptation of Clue. It certainly spooked me a little when Mr. Green, who I was pretty sure was my killer, danced through the wall and into the room I was in haha

Remember, Apollo by AdamCYounis 2020-04-24T01:05:23Z

Whoa, this was fantastic. Really creative, though, like others I had some difficulty taking in the story at the same time I was zooming around the map. A few of the jumps felt significantly more frustrating than others, in a way I'm not sure was intentional, but that might have just been me

Life is Hard, and then You Buy a Cactus by trmrddr 2020-04-22T12:54:26Z

@arzi Trying to balance the game was definitely more guessing than science for me. As a stop gap, we included a difficulty slider in the options menu, though nothing really mentions that it exists (I added it with about 30 minutes until the deadline haha).

@fishmasterino Glad you enjoyed, but sorry to hear people are still having issues with getting certain keys registered. I was more than a little naive for trying to parse typing out of keypresses instead of reading an actual text input, but you live and you learn. Hopefully I'll be able to get a quick fix out sometime soon.

Turtle Daddy by dummydojo 2020-04-22T21:23:43Z

Whoa, this is incredibly well polished. like some comments have mentioned, the audio mix needed a bit of extra work. The game itself was an absolute treat to play though, it looked absolutely gorgeous

Whisper of the Flame by Zachary Rodrigue 2020-04-22T00:01:03Z

The jump animation is absolutely giving me life. Level design is always tough in such a short time frame, but you've done a pretty decent job here! I'd love to see the movement juiced up even a little bit more, but it's hard to complain haha

Pogo by Motley 2020-04-23T20:13:15Z

I'm always a sucker for a good Pico-8 game, and one of these days I'll make one. I found the obstacles a little jumpy once the speed got high enough, and I found myself wishing the movement carried a bit more momentum.

On the whole though, I think you've done a great job creating some interesting uses for a pretty simple mechanic. It was super easy to understand and get into, and deep enough to hold my attention

LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Crazy Looper by LeReveur 2020-10-08T02:42:03Z

This was a lot more enjoyable than I would have guessed at first glance! With some juice (maybe an indicator of how much power you gave the previous shot? I found myself using my mouse for that anyway) and non-placeholder graphics, and maybe with some sub-objectives, I think you could really have something here

Stuck In Paris by CocaPasteque 2020-10-05T20:25:11Z

Boy howdy is fun mode ever fun. As a fellow Roundabout-game maker, I definitely had to try this.

In-browser, things are pretty choppy when the player car breaks apart (at least on my MBP), but it's an exceptionally fun take on things. Like mentioned, the movement feels a little stiff with too little granularity (could be an animation thing too, really), but I definitely know how polishing in a jam goes haha

Soulbound by benjamin 2020-10-05T17:07:57Z

I say this every time, but I'm such a sucker for nice Pico8 games. Those are some super tricky riddles, I definitely had to restart once or twice to go back and look for tombstones I had missed/forgotten (the initial snake puzzle in particular comes to mind).

It looks, feels, and sounds stellar!

The Trolliest Problem by allthebees 2020-10-05T20:34:11Z

Really quite funny, I had to hit esteemed actor Shia LaBeouf just to see what happened. I ran into the same problems as @iluvatar

Purgatory is a Music Store by MattWoelk 2020-10-08T02:19:41Z

Every so often you just see a screenshot of a game, get an incredibly clear idea of its vibe, and know you just have to try it.

This absolutely brought my poor old laptop to its knees which made improvising a little tricky, but I loved every second of it anyway. The trumpet was maybe a little harsh and artificial for me, but I think you've got a great idea here. My previous LD game had a music improvisation mechanic as well, I'm always a sucker for being able to create like that in a game haha

GIANT Sushi Party! by Barbiche 2020-10-06T01:50:38Z

A nice little mechanic and execution! It took me embarrassingly long to realize how the red number under the sushi worked: I thought for sure that adding+removing an ingredient would lose me money real-time, not just when I submitted.

Loop Frogs by GaryS 2020-10-08T16:59:32Z

Really clean execution on the concept here! The only problem I ran into was having my frog seemingly desync from the path I had laid out? Not sure what happened there, but redoing the loop seemed to fix it.

Roundabout Way by Quandtm 2020-10-09T14:03:25Z

This is delightful! The whole aesthetic's really cohesive, and watching all the cars slowly crash after failing to escape is wonderful. I could've gone for a bit more juice in the car's handling, and a quicker way to restart on failures, but those are extremely minor points.

The Looping Legend by PronomicalArtist 2020-10-06T15:06:04Z

What a tricky little game you've managed to put together here! Honestly, the biggest thing the game could use is some extra juice: the bullets are pretty small, and the effects from them hitting something are pretty easy to miss. A punchier SFX and upping the bullet size would do a lot for the feel, I think (though would make it quite a bit tougher).

It took me a hot second to realize that my plane wasn't autofiring (I think the countdown timer threw me off?)

It's a really fun (and funny) idea, I could definitely see this going somewhere post-jam.

Memoirs by Virtual Turtle Studio 2020-10-08T16:31:07Z

This is really sweet, I love the art! The ties to the theme are maybe a little tenuous and could've been hammered on a bit harder through the exploration, but I honestly like the somewhat quieter tie to the theme. Maybe just because I know what the theme is, but it had me actually thinking about what I was seeing and where you might've been coming from.

Congrats on your beginning forays into writing, I've always been to scared to try haha

Cattle Ropin' by nandelind 2020-10-06T16:55:54Z

This is a really cute experience, and I'm *really* bad at it: I only managed to lasso 10 cows. It oozes character.

It maybe ran a little long for me, and I had a hard time judging how far my lasso would go (maybe a "power" meter would help out with that?), but I'm really glad I found this game.

AutoMate by nelow 2020-10-08T18:54:35Z

Wow, I really dug this! I ran into a small couple of camera control issues, and had a bit of a tough time figuring out how exactly everything worked together: things felt maybe a touch more frantic than you may have intended?

I absolutely enjoyed my time with this one, the puzzles were neat, and I adored the music you went with

Revenge of the zombie attack by Sabeurre 2020-10-06T17:06:56Z

These tower defenses aren't usually for me, but this was pretty fun! Some small quibbles about the tower designs though: Is there a range limit to the gatling guns? I couldn't figure out if there was any reason not to stack barbed wire from the front as far back as I could afford, and just load up gatling guns the opposite way.

GLITCH LOOP by ZakAmana 2020-10-06T16:43:12Z

Oh my god, how did you do this all in 2 days? A little chunky to play, but I'm guessing that's my underpowered laptop speaking.

I'm in love with the whole aesthetic you've created here, and the puzzles are great too!

Grinding Gears by Pincushion 2020-10-08T02:05:54Z

That third puzzle sure is tricky, huh?

Like has been mentioned, I found myself exclusively looking at the mini-map, especially with how tricky it was to jump between the main screen and the map I avoided it as much as possible. Character movement was maybe a little on the slow side for me, but that's a pretty minor complaint. Good work!

unfriendly AI by Ekoxe 2020-10-06T01:39:32Z

Pretty nifty little game! My only issues are UX ones: That the "fight" button and all your attacks are on opposite sides of the screen had me always feeling like I was starting on the backfoot; and since I couldn't look at the attacks outside of a fight, and had to just commit to an attack until it succeeded or lost.

Round-a-bout: Get Me Outta Here! Edition by trmrddr 2020-10-05T16:38:58Z

@wevel Believe me, I wanted to add in a free roam mode (and one where you have a time limit to reach the next exit), but was *way* too busy to get it done. In the meantime, take solace in the fact that you can keep driving and crashing cars with the game over screen up.

@eduard-hauer We noticed that was a problem a bit too late to get a proper solution in, but if you hit the "r" key, it'll drop the car back at the initial spawn!

Round-a-bout: Get Me Outta Here! Edition by trmrddr 2020-10-08T18:59:07Z

@virtual-turtle-studio What probably happened there is that we can pick the next exit from *any* of the exposed exits, not just one in the newly generated roundabout. We've definitely been getting feedback that it feels a little tedious backtracking for things like that, so we'll have to figure out something cleaner if we go further with it. You're 100% right about finding the fun with the car crashes, we may have a pivot and a new mode on our hands soon.

@copito Originally I wanted to have varied layouts you'd have to drive through to mix things up, but those kinds of powerups/constraints are a really good idea. The brakes were definitely bit of a mistake: I wanted to add in a handbrake, but ran out of time to get it feeling good and just added in a reverse (which accelerates half as fast as forwards) instead, which doesn't really cut it. Could've used some tweaking if I hadn't done it last minute haha

Lily Pad Drifters by bernard-bumblebutt 2020-10-06T14:30:12Z

I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would on first blush. That music's incredible.

A few things that could really take this over the top: - This may be happening already, but it'd be nice if the bug spawning patterns varied per level - Some kind of indicator of how much time you have left without eating (draining colour from the frog, maybe?). I found myself staring at the timer a lot, doing quick math to see how long I had left - It felt super awkward launching myself when the frog would spin in reverse, but I don't have any helpful suggestions here.

Run a circle by SkelleRoznik 2020-10-05T20:16:46Z

Really clean: someone mentioned that they could see this as a fun mobile game, and I definitely agree.

My only complaint is that the inside track is pretty tough to play on, since jumping moves you *closer* to the upcoming obstacle, while the outside ring moves you further away when you leap.

I love the aesthetic, and the music fits quite nicely!

Stuck in a Soup Loop by Doot 2020-10-13T19:26:36Z

I really dig the aesthetic you're working with here, the art and music get along quite nicely! The in-game tutorial was really quite clean, though I initially expected more variety in the different round's tasks (instead of just a bit shorter, and without numbers, tweak some other things instead?)

Did the soup direction end up coming into it at all? I think all the soups I made ended up being CCW. Was the `in the soup` label at the bottom supposed to show what you've already added? I'm guessing that got cut for time?

The Titan's grave by BadPiggy 2020-10-08T17:52:54Z

Oh this is great! Making you choose between moving and shooting is a choice I can respect, but the movement felt a little too clunky to be quite right for it (imo, of course). Because of it, I found myself getting stuck in "death loops" on the last phase, where unless I more or less spammed the dodge roll I'd eat multiple hits after taking one.

Not necessarily a problem, but you know. It felt like a massive difficulty spike from 2-3, but I'm not gonna pretend like I'm good at video games.

Orbitrary by Aimainiac 2020-10-09T13:56:08Z

Really quite slick, but similarly to other players I didn't notice that much of a difference in speeds between the layers: I had a really hard time avoiding the cone-beams. I also absolutely spent a *long* time my first playthrough trying to avoid the shield pickups, couldn't tell you why.

I love a good Pico8 game though, congrats!

Loopy Dungeon by SpaceGuinea Productions 2020-10-10T22:14:14Z

I more or less agree with all the comments other users have left: I had a tough time figuring out how to plan my route without getting ruined while still fixing any traps. I know the weapons are hitscan, but I had a super hard time telling if I was actually connecting with enemies.

I found the hotkeys didn't feel super intuitive to me, especially with having to use the mouse as well, but that might just be me being a bad gamer.

Press The Button by Steventus 2020-10-07T01:11:46Z

You've done a frighteningly good job capturing the mood here, almost too good. I know it's intentional, and I absolutely respect the choice, but it went on a little too long for me.

The art does a lot to sell the whole vibe, I love the little bit of.. parallax?, you've got going on as you look around your office. One tiny nitpick: I'd have appreciated if you used a monospace font for the numbers, it makes it a little awkward to tell how much money you've got at a glance, when a 1 can make it so much shorter than other numbers.

When I started writing this, I was really curious what items would be trash and what would be saved. Having thought about it some more though, I think you made the right call in having it be arbitrary from moment to moment. Boy did I ever feel bad for actually getting the promotion.

Bind Off by dumplingsquid 2020-10-05T21:03:45Z

A nice little piece of interactive fiction, I really like the idea here. A few small quibbles though: - it took me most of the game to realize that certain pixels would prompt monologue, instead of it just being random after so many steps or something. That could maybe be a bit more obvious? - Related to that, since hitting any key will advance monologue as well as move, I found myself accidentally skipping text pretty frequently.

I loved the bits of story and the knit design, but I admit I did end up testing every square to find out where the "mistakes" were.

Time Loop by mellobacon 2020-10-08T15:03:45Z

Congrats on publishing your first game! I was going to suggest almost exactly the same things as @nelow: it feels like the purple enemies start firing a bit too soon, and either enemies move too fast/often, or you shoot too slowly, it makes it hard to react.

If you want to keep the shooting enemies firing immediately, maybe you could provide an alternate shot that could destroy the incoming shots? You've got a ton of room to get a bit of extra polish in and have a really clean package. I like the aesthetic of the game as is, but adding some "juice" to the shots and whatnot could go really far.

One last thing I ran into: I'm not sure why I'd want to move around the circle? It seems like I could shoot wherever, it just changed the angle a bit? The movement controls felt a *little* unintuitive (I think that just comes with rotating around a circle though haha), which may have contributed to me just sitting in place and aiming entirely with the mouse. Maybe you could auto-fire or something, and have your angle locked based on where you are in the circle?

Once again, congrats on finishing and releasing a game!

Loopy's run by ZeonBlue 2020-10-07T00:14:46Z

Congrats on making your first game! I think you've found a pretty cool concept here, but I'm not sure the game itself communicates it well.

The stark contrast between the "bullets" and the environment is great for helping the player keep track of where they need to avoid, but I found it a little hard to actually control and maneuver around the space: I ended up settling in more or less just moving straight forward and jumping to clear obstacles.

I think part of that is from the camera being extremely sensitive, and that I couldn't really get a feel for how enemies move/appear, so I felt like all I could do was keep moving full-speed ahead.

I didn't actually realize that getting hurt would increase my score more until after I had played and then read your submission. That's a really cool idea! I wish I could have discovered that a little more easily in the gameplay itself though.

10 Seconds from Death by brads.space 2020-10-05T14:42:07Z

The atmosphere on this is amazing, and I think the ultra-high max speed's effect on the visuals adds even more to it.

I got stuck pretty early on I think (the puzzle that introduces the spring, it seemed like I couldn't get enough speed to climb the wall and reach the red button? I'm pretty into where I saw you going with it though.

Stuck in a Timeloop by Stefan B. 2020-10-08T01:57:43Z

You've got the core of a fun little platformer here! I had kind of a tough time judging how high I needed to be to jump on my ghosts, and things generally felt a bit floaty. I like the character concept you've gone with here, but I found it a little tough to parse exactly what was going on in their sprite, maybe because of how it worked with the start black background?

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Deepest Sword by Strega 2021-04-27T21:16:08Z

Is this a euphemism?

Incredible work but wowie was it tricky on that last level in a way that none of the other sections were.

Seven Sleepy Nights by Osterzone 2021-04-26T16:13:23Z

This is a pretty slick game! One of the more interesting interpretations of the theme I've seen so far.

Is the alarm clock supposed to only partially obscure the phone+window? It ended up being feasible to keep it up most of the night, but a little awkward to still see the other things (forewarning, I only got as far as the 4th night)

Deep Cover by Silas Reinagel 2021-04-28T02:13:57Z

Solid stuff, it both looked and sounded fantastic. Had a pretty fantastic moment of panic when I first had to deal with *two* people at once, and from then on was super cautious about it happening again. That's the kind of moment that's hard to get, and I'm suitably impressed you managed it.

Just Call Your Mom by willjardine 2021-04-27T14:46:48Z

Absolutely gorgeous entry, and I dug the music quite a bit. Like others have said, I would've loved a bit more depth to the combat: I didn't feel fast enough to try and dodge or anything, so I found myself just bursting enemies repeatedly. A different attack, or a block, or something would've done a lot of good.

Reading your description afterwards, I think your concept is quite cool, but I didn't really get it from the game itself. Unfortunately, I don't have any great ideas off the top of my head for how you could link it a bit more.

On the whole, I quite enjoyed my time with this lil one-button fighter

Deeper And Deeper by hypp 2021-04-30T15:47:08Z

Are you some kind of wizard? I remain a sucker for Pico-8 jam games, and this one's especially impressive. I'd have loved to see slightly more interaction, or more of a reason to not just stay in the 2d view, but wowie am I ever a fan of the title screen even

Submergence by TomekS 2021-04-27T13:29:19Z

I'm a big fan of the audio, and the concept you ran with here. I thought the grabbing was a little finicky (there were a number of times I was *sure* I had snagged one and not had it go off), but nothing major there. With the pace of the gameplay, I'd have loved to see higher contrast/more detailed terrain to bring some visual interest and help the player avoid walls a little more easily, but game jams gonna game jam.

Like others have mentioned, slightly more forgiving crash mechanics would be nice (maybe only crash if you're going at least X m/s, or a healthbar or something?), but certainly not a deal breaker.

Bunny Bunny Dig Dig by ZakAmana 2021-04-27T20:57:19Z

I... How in the world? I feel like you've smashed it out of the park with each of your jam games I've played, and I don't understand it haha

My only complaint is that the controls feel a touch janky, having to mash the arrows, and combat feels a pretty unintuitive.

I'm a big fan of this little groove, and it of course looks stunning.

Wizard Dungeon Escape 3D by Sodaro 2021-04-27T14:02:29Z

It took me longer than I'd like to admit to figure out how to make things happen properly (I spent a while just trying to climb by jumping on my own shots), but this was rad once it clicked!

Ole Gonna Goalscore! by scott.redrup 2021-04-28T13:37:57Z

I knew all the time I spent playing FFX and doing Tidus' overdrives would come in handy someday! Despite knowing almost nothing about football, I rather enjoyed this little experience! The timings are maybe a touch tight, but there's not all that much I'd change about it. I like the aesthetic of the game itself, but would maybe prefer a slightly more designed UI/text boxes. A minor nitpick, I know

Associated Arguments by mathemagician 2021-04-28T13:24:04Z

@mahalis Thanks for checking out my little game!

To explain a little about what I was going for (probably not entirely successfully): I wanted to take "Deeper and Deeper" in the direction of "deepening a relationship", or getting "deeper into a conversation." It may have been more clear if I had actual writing, but I wanted the whole game to be a single conversation, where selecting any of the dialogue boxes is choosing a response to what the other person just said. My idea was that when you make it to a *new* option, you've managed to get a little closer to the other person (the dialogues get longer, and they rather literally let their walls down, giving a path forward to the next one). It, uh, was maybe a little heady for the minimal amount of art I was able to make haha

As for where you got stuck, it's not indicated well, but hitting the top button first locks you out from hitting the bottom button and reaching the end. It turns out having a compo be your first time making art&designing levels makes it quite a bit more stressful

Associated Arguments by mathemagician 2021-04-28T13:29:32Z

@nick-rafalski Thanks for spending a little time with my game! I definitely noticed that happening every so often while I was developing the game, but I have absolutely no idea what could've been doing it. I'm not sure how such a simple movement-scheme and a bunch of box colliders could have any weird interactions like that. As I wrote this comment, I've realized I probably should've just used a circle collider on the player instead of the same box as everything else haha

Callisto by Rawb 2021-04-27T15:14:35Z

I had a heck of a time trying to dodge around the shark, but this is by far the best of the "deep sea sub" games I've seen so far. I love the camera mechanic, and the movement tech is fun if a touch sluggish. The vibe between the music, graphics, and general gameplay is pretty chill and I love that (even if the shark bullied me a little too hard).

Excellent work, I'm looking forward to seeing any new games you come up with down the road as well.

Afraid to Turn by rhoff95 2021-04-27T15:47:48Z

I'm a big fan of the aesthetic you've managed to pull off here. I very much agree with @gibss, I couldn't figure out how to start the game, or how to throw rocks on my own, which was a bit of a shame, but pretty minor for a Compo game.

Out of curiosity, did I have to mouse over items when pressing E to pick them up? I couldn't tell, but I sure always did.

Fishing in the woods by KillRyusha 2021-04-27T23:57:43Z

Took a hot second for me to realize exactly what was happening with the gameplay, but it's very cute. The quick-time events feel very unforgiving.

Ziggurat by nethead 2021-04-28T21:12:09Z

Aside from a few moments where I didn't know where to go (the section with the falling red cubes on the near-black floor comes to mind), this was truly wonderful! It looks, sounds, and feels exactly how I wanted it to, somehow

Down to the Core by his-games 2021-04-30T13:55:42Z

Oh the music was *really* good. Some of the initial spawns felts a little unfair (though I guess they never killed me, so maybe they weren't?), but on the whole it was a pretty fun little bullet hell game. There was a weird hitch in every level transition that made me wonder if I was supposed to do something before it continued, but that's pretty minor.

Mermaid Deep by mech_alina 2021-04-30T14:43:13Z

Looks pretty great, and the music is suitably chill! I ran into a few small problems (the drone enemy read as trash to me the first time, the "level end" spot read to me as a sea mine enemy), but they're relatively minor. Was it intentional that you could pretty easily wall-climb your way to the top of the levels using the edges of the map?

MinerClicker by eps 2021-04-28T19:28:43Z

Rad execution on a simple idea! The economy felt super tight, but that's certainly not a problem. My one critique is maybe that the sonar didn't quite feel strong enough for how expensive it was, but maybe I just haven't found the right strategy for it.

Congrats on a job well done, both of you! I really like the terrain textures

Jingoku by Skyeward 2021-10-06T21:01:51Z

A wildly stressful game about a simple concept executed exceptionally

Speedboat Alchemy by Brandon Hare 2021-10-05T14:40:30Z

I really cannot overstate how exceptional the music is. I had a little trouble figuring out what combinations actually did something (did amount of a type of ingredient matter? Or only whether it was present?), and I kinda wish it could've been keyboard-only. It's a cool concept, done nicely, and with absolutely incredible energy.

Cowabunga by Sestren 2021-10-06T01:09:42Z

I always love to see Pico-8 games, and this was no exception. I played through a couple times, even! The second just to see if I could manage to save the city with throwing a single glass of milk.

NEKONOVA'S NOT HOME by LeYamez 2021-10-06T00:40:38Z

A lovely little space to play around in, even if I'm not particularly good at it

Short Fuse by beats 2021-10-06T00:44:28Z

6 seconds ended up being my best, but wowie have I ever had some mornings get me out the door about that fast.

Guess I was too fast posting too, huh?

Under P'ARRRR by Fear Games 2021-10-06T01:02:48Z

Honestly? Ingenious. The volume slider seemed to reach 0 at around 75% of max, and I once managed to send my ship out of the camera area and was forced to quit back to menu, but those are such minor quibbles, who cares?

Controls excellently, and it's just generally fun to play around with. Pirate golf may well be the best golf.

Erratic Equine Extraction by hwaet 2021-10-05T01:19:27Z

Trying this on wobble mode may have been a mistake. Am I right that this was a Labyrinth kind of control, where you tilt the level? It was kind of hard to tell haha

Even with the control frustrations, I quite enjoyed my time with this silly little game

Trauma by AdamCYounis 2021-10-16T19:08:55Z

What a neat concept, gameplay and otherwise. One small thing is that I wish I could have "rotated" my card loadout or something else, to help "reset" failed puzzles a little more easily. This game was an absolute treat to listen to and look at.

Emily vs the Unstable Creatures by JPatchZ 2021-10-07T15:09:02Z

Could've used some extra juice, but really quite solid! I somehow managed to buy all the flamethrower tiers while only having enough money for one, not sure what happened there, but I sure did end up thousands of coins in debt.

An oddly SATISFYING game by Duck Reaction 2021-10-05T00:07:14Z

I'm not sure I see the theme, and I do wish you had managed to make a few more involved puzzles, but I'm a fan of what you've got going on with this! Quite smooth!

Grabanakki by Saturnyoshi 2021-10-06T01:27:39Z

Reminiscent of Super Mario World, and unbelievably polished. I had a hunch I was going to love this just from sitting on the title screen for a minute or two, the music + UI polish was *that* good.

I found the controls pretty frustrating until I swapped to using a controlled (curse you Sticky Keys), but an excellent experience even if I wasn't skilled enough to make it very far.

Hammer Keep by BadPiggy 2021-10-06T20:40:23Z

Your combat design continues to be top notch

Topple Tower by Kroporo 2021-10-16T19:18:11Z

A little slow to start up, but a perfectly solid and juicy Jenga adaptation. Personally, I think the lack of a score almost helps this game: it gives it a bit more of a relaxed vibe compared to trying to push your high score every time.

Survive Phantom Estate by Perrin 2021-10-06T00:54:44Z

I know you asked people not to review/vote, but oh my, am I ever amazed you've managed to make an actual PS1 game for the game.

I don't know that I can say much you don't already know, but I'm wildly impressed you've pulled off what you have.

Tables & Tremors by SlimmerBurger 2021-10-05T00:16:08Z

Oh this is excellent. You weren't kidding about the tables sometimes being quite small to click on haha, from my brief play I wonder if it would benefit from being a bit more lenient?

The sounds and graphics are pretty minimalist but manage exactly what they need to here.

This gave me some serious flashbacks to running Rocketjumping/surfing/demojumping maps in TF2, was there some inspiration from there?

Deathrail by Hotowlgirls 2021-10-16T18:45:17Z

Initially I had a rough time with the controls, and ended up getting something more comfortable for myself by using my right hand to hit Q and E with my left hitting everything else. A really neat little game, I quite enjoyed the music.

Unsteady Bounce by Comfy 2021-10-07T01:16:28Z

The restart felt a little slow, but maybe I just failed a lot more than was expected haha

Looks excellent, and the slider control is really quite interesting, if difficult to pick up quickly.

RTFM - LD49 by straighter 2021-10-04T23:58:45Z

I took a couple cracks at it, but I'm not sure I ever figured out how to actually map the lights onto the levers. Was I misreading the manual, or is it possible to get 3 different letters? Is there a specific order you're supposed to pull the levers in?

Kattonauten by Elastic 2021-10-05T00:39:26Z

It took me quite a while to realize I could only stand on certain blocks, and I'm still not sure on how some of the death mechanics work, but this was wildly cool! I'm always a sucker for a good pico8 game.

I wasn't able to beat it (I got to the bomb star field) unfortunately, I had to give up after a failed attempt ended with me jammed into a wall with no way to get out haha Uhoh.PNG
