Cool game, would be better if you see the controls in the screen though (not only in the description).

hamus 2020-10-05 16:28

Very slick and well crafted game with excellent sounds and pixel art animations! I'll be playing this for a while

spaceguy99 2020-10-05 17:05

Very cute game! took me some time to adjust to the controls but def. adorable. I <3 pico-8 games, they are always so nice. I think some in-game explanation would've helped a lot, I kept crashing into planets and avoiding diamonds at first.

rossmoff 2020-10-05 17:06

Nice, well rounded game. Good gameplay, lovely design. Was hard to turn it off :) Well developed!

arttu-halonen 2020-10-05 17:23

A simple game, but really well executed! The controls took some getting used to, but the gameplay felt solid!

nick-rafalski 2020-10-05 17:26

This is super clever. The speed-changing aspect of the different orbits is the most novel part. It really makes you think strategically about what's up ahead. Can you speed up and juuust get past that asteroid? or should you slow down and let it pass you first? Of course, there is a competing motivation in your head going on "No go into the middle ring with the shield bits!". Those 2 competing motivations make the game exciting and a little addicting. Great job!

The one thing I wish was different was the 'hit box' or 'tolerance' for collecting multiple shield bits while switching orbits. It seems like it's pretty tight, and sometimes I felt like I should have got credit for picking up a shield bit right as I was entering/exiting an orbit, but the game didn't give it to me. This would make the game a little easier obviously, but I think it's pretty tough to begin with, so it's okay. And more importantly, it would improve players' feeling of accomplishment when stringing a bunch of successful shield-pickups in a row. It almost becomes a rhythm game in the way you want to hit every shield bit.

Awesome game. My favorite of the compo so far.

wheybags 2020-10-05 18:15

Nice game! I liked the graphics and sound, but my reflexes are too slow for the gameplay. High score was a measly 16 :D

superkoekje 2020-10-05 18:22

cool mechanics

asue 2020-10-05 20:27

I love this kind of game, minimalist but very well designed. At the beginning it's a bit confusing when to use Z or X but you get used to it after a few tries. The game makes you want to start over and beat your previous score. I really enjoyed playing this game, well done.

tayo 2020-10-06 02:56

Super slick, well made without any unnecessary mechanics. Tight controls and good use of the theme. Only thing missing is some music! Other than that fantastic entry!

shortbread 2020-10-06 04:14

Simple and super smooth, love it!

cubiclaw 2020-10-06 06:33

Awesome presentation - intro, menu, pixel art and sounds, love all of it. The game itself is really clever and fun too! Can't think what else can be improved beside adding some 8-bit music, although not sure how well it would travel in the vacuum of space.

raphiell 2020-10-07 01:20

Cool little game, I've always wanted to try making something in pico-8. Simple but still a bit hard to master, mostly cause I panicked haha. 2 Player was fun, but I would have liked if my partner could respawn if I reached the next level.

Well done, and congrats on finishing a game for the jam!

peachtreeoath 2020-10-07 05:14

Very tight game design, loved it. Like others said, the idea of having to change speed by picking an orbit is not something I've really seen. Certainly not in the context of dodging and collecting things. It's the perfect game length for a game jam. The game ramps up to the right difficulty in the right amount of time (for me). I could only get a score of 51 at best. It gets quite hectic for my reaction speed and I end up just praying I don't get hit by something. One of the best core gameplays I've seen in an LD, not just specific to LD47.

mog13 2020-10-08 20:12

felt like a really well made simple game.... then the layering happened and things turn up to 11! really easy to understand controls but its addictive as you explore a bunch of different things you can do within the rule set. I got really into it, great job!

tino 2020-10-08 21:01

This game is totally complete, love the arcade vibe! it even has multiplayer and gamepad compatibility. This entry is a great example of scoping in game jams. Well done!

Maybe a nice home made 8 bit music would make it perfect!

dragonzbw 2020-10-08 21:04

Cool! Pretty difficult, but also pretty addictive. It's a bit confusing at first since the how to play is only text and doesn't really show you what does what, but I got the hang of what everything did pretty fast. The controls felt a little unintuitive (I would've preferred button presses rather than holding) but that might just be me.

bentebent 2020-10-08 21:04

The framing of this game is great, really sells itself in terms of presentation. Once you get further into it the multiple different hazards really amps up the intensity. I couldn't get past 35 points but it felt really good to get even that far.

moski 2020-10-08 21:13

Quite a difficult yet thrilling game. I'll get people on the loop about it!

firefox_Qr2LAbVLPQ.png

I've seen a lot of orbiting games around, but this one is my favorite so far. It's very simple to understand, but vert tricky to get right. Being able to change the speed while switching orbits instead of letting the player freely move was a touch of genius that kept me on my toes. Barely managing to maneuver through so many obstacles felt cathartic.

This is the kind of games that I'd put on my phone. Certainly the type to cause short-burst addictions. Nice, nice, nice! 🐳

thesnide 2020-10-08 21:14

I love those simple games that do not need a huge explanation, but can hook you for a while.

And PiCO8 is awesome for that, as I use it almost exclusively now for LD.

blood-jackal23 2020-10-08 21:14

Nicely done! Never thought you can so much fun playing as a satellite

I love the arcade-ey feel of the game and the gameplay is actually moe challenging than I thought

If I have to think of any criticism it would be that there needs to be a "How to Play" section at the start. The description is great and all, but i would prefer a tutorial. Also, having a scoreboard would make this an official arcade game

Overall, brilliant job mate

mariana-mattevi 2020-10-08 21:14

Really cool and simple idea! The speed change is really tricky, and the more I played the more I got confused to which directon z or x should I press >< I guess I don't have the motor coordination for this type of game! But I really enjoyed tho! It reminds me a little of Super Hexagon (another game I can't play haha) Great Job @aimainiac

koolruz 2020-10-08 21:20

This was a lot of fun! I had some difficulty understanding what to do from just the game alone (Every time the meteor hit the planet, the explosion effect was so forceful that I assumed that I should have blocked it), but once I read the description and understood that I was supposed to collect the diamonds and avoid the meteors, it made a lot more sense.

I did have trouble with the controls - I kept mixing up which button I needed to press to move outwards, and which button I needed to press to move inwards - I felt like I wanted to just use directional input instead of thinking about moving in or out. When I had my fingers on the Z and X keys, I naturally wanted to press X to move my character physically to the right, and Z to move my character physically to the left, but depending on my current position, the controls would be "reversed" from what I expected.

That said, I still had a lot of fun playing, and the different mechanics that you introduced as the game went on (The sectional lasers that you had to slow yourself down/speed yourself up to avoid, orbiting meteors) were all elegant and interesting obstacles to throw at the player that meshed really well with the orbital movement! Good job! :)

chispalbc 2020-10-08 21:42

woah physics i like that great job! 49 is my record Simple graphics for this game was the right choice although i guess pico8 helps with that haha. Everything, from move to aesthetic was really cohesive so nice work on that

ismael-rodriguez 2020-10-08 21:54

Nice simple game! Simple but good visuals and audio.

It takes a couple spins to get the hang of it.

Friendly criticism: I always skip game descriptions and jump right into the games to see how well the games convey their rules and controls.

I think you should try to find away to explain/convey the speed mechanic in game. Once the planet started erupting I died thinking there was nothing I could do. So I read the description and found I could move faster on the inner ring and slower on the out ring, that wasn't clear to me without instruction and changed how I played for the better. Maybe a speedometer, or just some arrows or something?

The other thing I would suggest is different buttons for try/retry at the game-over screen, since they're the main 2 buttons of the game it's easy accidentally hit them and miss your score.

Great job on the your game!

zen 2020-10-08 22:01

Nice game loved your concept and how simple the controls were. The graphics were awesome and thought you did a great job. Would have liked to possibly see a soundtrack to go with the game. But other than that you did an amazing job, congrats : )

kunonooni 2020-10-08 22:55

I really like this game. It was simple to learn yet hard to master! the gfx and sfx were really great and the controls were very responsive. I was able to only get 35 points and I had a lot of fun play this! Congrats on finishing and submitting your game!

runtra 2020-10-08 22:58

I really loved the game. I think that it's the proof that you can give a concise and certain message with very simple assets and audio.

noam-blei 2020-10-08 23:00

Loved this game. It has just 2 buttons and yet its super intretaining to play. I really love this kind of games

tostada 2020-10-08 23:46

Such a simple concept with very simple game mechanics and it's executed perfectly, i love it and i am so frustated because i suck at this game and couldn't get further than 31. One of my favorite games of the jam due to how simple and fun it is

aimainiac 2020-10-09 01:09

Thank you so much for all the ratings and feedback! I'm planning to do a post-jam version of this game, so please check that out after LD ends!

@bunkai, @spaceguy99, @arttu-halonen, @asue, @mariana-mattevi, @koolruz: I agree that the controls are a bit hard to get the hang of at first. I'm thinking of adding the ability to edit them, even though Pico-8 limits what buttons you can use.

@tayo, @cubiclaw, @tino: I am not too familiar with the pico-8 sound editor; the only things I've been able to make are bleeps and bloops. Nevertheless, I'll try to add some tunes.

@spaceguy99, @dragonzbw, @blood-jackal23: I will add an in-game tutorial in place of the help/tips text.

@raphiell: To be frank, I spent more time on the vs mode than the coop mode. I'll make sure to add a way to revive your fallen partner in coop.

@nick-rafalski: Thanks for the feedback! I will add those things in.

@ismael-rodriguez: I did add a bit of an indication that your speed is affected by your orbit through the trail of particles the player leaves. However, if you didn't notice it, then it must have not been that effective.

@hamus, @rossmoff, @wheybags, @superkoekje, @shortbread, @peachtreeoath, @mog13, @bentebent, @thesnide, @mariana-mattevi, @chispalbc, @kunonooni, @runtra, @noam-blei, @tostada: Glad you enjoyed the game as well!

reef 2020-10-09 03:03

I really like this game! I used pico-8 as well! The sound effects were impactful and the graphics effective. Like others have said, the controls tripped me up a few times. I think the arrows would have helped me remember which is which. The balance between managing speed, dodging hazards, and collecting shield dots made was really fun. The challenge curve was great, a great challenge without being frustrating or boring. My high score was 42!

noam-blei 2020-10-09 06:19

That is a nice game! Interesting and smooth mechanic. Pretty funny, that we have thematicly close game =)

mathemagician 2020-10-09 13:56

Really quite slick, but similarly to other players I didn't notice that much of a difference in speeds between the layers: I had a really hard time avoiding the cone-beams. I also absolutely spent a *long* time my first playthrough trying to avoid the shield pickups, couldn't tell you why.

I love a good Pico8 game though, congrats!

juansabadoperon 2020-10-10 20:39

Cool game! For a jam game it had more mechanics than I was expecting. The health, meteors, collectables, the blast that happens in a portion of the circle, the red circles that seemed to home in on me and maybe I missed something else. It's simple but it has depth, really nice.

natpat 2020-10-22 16:21

A fun little game stuffed full of ideas! Really cool premise, I liked how the game built with more and more things to avoid. I have to admit - I was absolutely awful at it, and couldn't get the controls at all. I think I would have preferred a button press to move between orbits, rather than holding one down for a specific orbit - but maybe that's just personal preference! I thought the hit detection could be a little mean at times - there were times were I was sure I'd gone through a ring but the game didn't give it to me. Made me feel like I sucked at the game - a more forgiving hit detection could lead a more positive feeling!

Woo, what a rush. This was super minimalistic but incredibly well-designed. Everything felt fair since advance warning is given for every single hazard and pickup, so you know that if you had only played a little bit better...which leads to that "one more run..." feeling.

I do think that a lot of players would benefit from an "easier" difficulty where the game just simply runs a little slower, but I didn't really mind. Impressive that you put in multiplayer as well! I'll have to try that at some point.
