LD47 — Stuck in a loop

Planet Hopping by Hjalte 2020-10-09T10:28:16Z

This is a nice simple game right there. the idea is straight-forward and the gameplay, despite being somewhat confusing at first, is fun

My criticism is as follows:

1. You need a soundtrack to make the game more interesting and less dull

2. Add an invulnerability timer after each hit. On my first run, I got stuck between 2 bats that pingponged me into space and I was out of bounds. Luckily, you seem to have a system that triggers a game over when that happens (I was worried I was gonna float out in space forever)

3. The gun seems a bit useless as I can just stomp or ignore every enemy I encounter

The pros of the game are as follows:

1. Good art direction.

2. Gameplay loop is simple and straight-forward

3. A good amount of enemy variety (for a game made in 3 days)

4. Controls are good even though I lose my bearings when I'm upside down, but there isn't much you can do about that

Overall, a job well done. Keep it up

Planet Hopping by Hjalte 2020-10-10T11:19:06Z

@hjalte I mean there was no music as I was playing. I think there was at the start but not during gameplay. There was only sound effects like jumping and gun shooting, but no music

Planet Hopping by Hjalte 2020-10-11T18:47:15Z

@hjalte I was playing on WebGL

C - O - I - I - L by Ace17 2020-10-10T12:34:06Z

Oh boy! It took me a while to find that exit, but I did eventually get the onion ring at the end (only those who beat the game will know what I'm talking about)

I like the idea, but god damn this game needs a lot of patience to beat!

I guess being completely disoriented in a maze was intentional and not a byproduct of the game's level design

Things I liked about the game:

1. the atmosphere is most definitley spot on

2. Thank GOD for those green arrows in the tunnels! Without them, this game would be like searching for a needle in a haystack

3. Controls are not frustrating

4. No bugs encountered

Things I didn't like about the game: 1. Was getting disoriented and dizzy as there's a huge lack of a sense of direction

2. Flashlight batteries are more useful as bread crumbs than actual flashlight batteries. I found that leaving a couple of them was a good strategy to let myself know that I've been in an area before. I suggest replacing them with flares that you can drop to mark previously-visited locations instead

3. Escape button just quits the game immediately instead of pausing, which resulted in me exiting the game and losing some progress by accident (cuz I'm used to hitting Esc to pause). I suggest making a pause menu where the player is given the option to exit the app instead

Overall, this a good game, but sadly I imagine that not that many people will be compelled to stick long enough to beat it as it requires a lot of patience to figure out what's going on. So, I recommend that you redisign the gameplay loop to make it more interesting

Well done and looking forward to your next game (or update for this game) Cheers

Chrono Kill by Giranath 2020-10-09T09:59:36Z

Not bad for a 3 days game, but I didn't know what I was supposed to do until I figured it out by playing

You need to destroy each triangle that is sticking out of the "Blobbling program" with a ship that has the same color. So, you play 3 times, once with each ship

A simple concept but you might want to make it a bit more exciting

The controls weren't very good. I was using M&K but I think the game was meant to be played with a controller

I also encountered a bug where the game wouldn't restart after I beat it

Overall, decent work, but could use more polishing. Keep it up

Stugan by mechanicallife 2020-10-16T10:19:11Z

Nicely done with the atmosphere. Unforetunatelly, I made to where you dial the number and the guy says what I think is "Jome" 3 times. I imagine that it's the password to one of the locks but I just couldn't figure it out

What I liked about the game: 1) The atmosphere is very good and there's always an unsettling feeling about the place you're in, which fits the game perfectly

2) The rooms change everytime you visit them. In one room, the bed was defying gravity by being placed upside down on the ceiling lol

3) Art style is very good

Things I disliked about the game: 1) Player movement feels... floaty. Like I'm sliding instead of actually walking

2) No proper way to exit the game (that I know of)

3) Maybe it's just me on this one, but voice acting needs to be clearer. Just what was that guy saying on the phone? Or maybe it was meant to be unclear. This one might be ignored if it's a design choice

Overall, I might actually give this game another go to see if I missed anything. Well done

INCORPORATION CORP. by Kilian BAPTENDIER 2020-10-06T18:46:29Z

Fun game to play. X was not working for some reason but space was

I like the boomerang mechanic, even though things do get out of hand if you start shooting too many objects at enemies. I guess that's the point: Shoot things at enemies but not too many so you don't hurt yourself

Overall, a good experience. Well done

Imperial Eggnog Incorporated by Blue Pin Studio 2020-10-06T19:35:51Z

This is the best game I played in this jam thus far. Hope you add more to it

My only criticism is that I think it needs a better tutorial

But overall, very good job

The Archer by llukass 2020-10-27T19:01:56Z

Yea... I beat the game with 18 seconds to spare lol

So, I think the game needs some kind of explanation as to what the player's goal is. I kinda stumbled on the key bby shear luck cuz I had no idea what I was supposed to do at first

All in all, keep it up and I'm sure you'll improve

Orbitrary by Aimainiac 2020-10-08T21:14:13Z

Nicely done! Never thought you can so much fun playing as a satellite

I love the arcade-ey feel of the game and the gameplay is actually moe challenging than I thought

If I have to think of any criticism it would be that there needs to be a "How to Play" section at the start. The description is great and all, but i would prefer a tutorial. Also, having a scoreboard would make this an official arcade game

Overall, brilliant job mate

Four Walls Of The Boiler Room by spyranteros 2020-10-08T21:40:24Z

beautiful work!

I couldn't beat it (Only figured out one number lol), but I think it can be the start for something much bigger

Criticism is that even though the jumpscares and creepy moments were good, some sections felt empty and could've used more spicey moments

Overall, great work for a compo. Keep it up

Out of the Box by WiTech 2020-10-05T23:32:40Z

A cool game, but after I made it through the 20 second gauntlet of fireballs and after surviving the saw blades, I got frustrated when I died from falling off the world's edge and realized that I'm gonna have to do all that again

With that aside, the game is decent and worth trying

For a first game jam, not bad at all. Keep it up

Retro Loop by Minos_L2b 2020-10-06T18:54:46Z

I encountered a bug where the ball went off track on the orange blocks level

Also, that level was a bit unfair

But overall, well done! Looking forward to your next game

Keep it up

Let's Circle Back by Alex the Bear 2020-10-08T22:36:32Z

Well, I'll be honest... This game needs some serious bug fixing

I'll name the bugs I encountered in the game

1. UI is interfering with the gameplay. I can't see the enemies or where I'm aiming at with the "Alert" windows on screen that I can't seem to close

2. The building in the center doesn't block bullets

3. I can still shoot after I'm dead apparently

4. I can shoot when I click on an "Alert" message

5. Health indication is misleading. I have no idea if it's representing my health or the health of the building I'm "protecting"

6. I can keep going at zero health apparently

7. The circle that my tank keeps going in seems to "expand" as I keep going, which leads to having only the turret sticking out of the ground at some point

8. An enemy type (The one that shoots regular bullets) deals no damage as it seems

9. The "Quit" button in the main menu crashes the game

Sorry if I'm being too harsh, but I have to be honest so that my feedback can be more useful to you. I know that the game was made in 3 days, but this is not an excuse for a malfunctioning product

Well, at least the "Complaints" joke was kinda funny

I hope this mostly-negative review doesn't deter you from improving your game development skills. Keep at it

Kill Me Plenty by Blood_Jackal23 2020-10-11T18:56:12Z

So, I read your feedback and I surmized that the following is needed:

@merpui @kaeveris @verso @wahooney A link between each trap and spawn. It will take me some thinking, but the best way I see thus far is to color code the traps with the spawn points. Like blue traps send you to the blue spawn, etc. Of course, this doesn't address the issue of having some traps revealing and hiding other parts of the level. This one will still be a "trial and error" mechanic as I still haven't figured out how to give the player a hint that trap A will reveal trap B without revealing trap B beforehand... if that makes sense lol

@aditon @lychee @vivien-fargette A tutorial will be the next step for this game. I'm already working on it :)

Thank you all for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the game

Cheers

Kill Me Plenty by Blood_Jackal23 2020-10-16T09:46:10Z

@ismael-rodriguez Thanks for pointing out that you can jump off the wall in Level 01. This issue should be fixed in Build 0.1.6

@wormholegames Oof! This isn't supposed to happen. I'll look into it when I get the chance

Thank you all for the feedback. I'll try my best to address all issues that were pointed out in the comments

Kill Me Plenty by Blood_Jackal23 2020-10-23T12:05:55Z

@matootsy Hi there! I'm sorry that the game didn't work properly for you. I downloaded the MS Build 0.1.7 files and played the game. I didn't encounter the problem you mentioned

If you can provide further information as to how this issue occurred, I will be grateful

Kill Me Plenty by Blood_Jackal23 2020-10-27T18:51:38Z

@matootsy hmm... I will keep looking into this but I have checked the build and everything was fine on my end

I'll be on the lookout for that bug you mentioned but I'm afraid I can't seem to figure out what causes this on your system. I'm sorry...

Kill Me Plenty by Blood_Jackal23 2020-10-28T08:56:29Z

@matootsy Well, I'm glad we got to the bottom of this :)

Ayumi's Day by Capt.Theo 2020-10-10T11:31:56Z

Things I liked about the game:

1. The theme and the art style were good and consistent 2. The tutorial explains the game mechanics well 3. The objective for each level was easy to spot

Things I disliked about the game:

1. The controls are not good at all 2. Although the music was a good fit to the theme, the constant looping was adding to my frustration

Overall, a good game but it needs more polish. Keep up the good work

The Loop by DrJexter 2020-10-07T11:04:35Z

I like the "Hole.IO" idea of the game, but there are some technical issues

The most prominent is the framerate drop. I believe the cause of this that there are too many objects that are being rendered at the same time, but I'm not sure

Criticism aside, I think you did a good job for your first jam. Keep it up and you will go far

Cheers

The Loop by DrJexter 2020-10-08T21:18:56Z

@drjexter I'm not an expert in 3D games but I believe you need to look into using different LODs for each 3D model in the scene. You might also need to create some kind of system that renders objects within a certain radius from the player. That way, you don't render everything all at once

Hope this helps

Save The Reactor by Jarvisp99 2020-10-08T22:05:17Z

Not a bad game per se, but I think the gameplay loop needs some rethinking

I just realized that the best strategy is to keep spamming LMB and hope for the best. Timing it is too hard to pull off

With that said, I can see that a lot of effort went into making the art of this game, so that's a plus

Overall, a decent game, but needs some redesigning

Keep up he good work

King on the Mountain by AndideBob 2021-10-08T16:18:26Z

Screenshot 2021-10-08 181718.pngI loved playing this game a lot. Quite simplistic in its idea but also very complicated in its gameplay.

But at the end of the day, I won :)

Neon Saber by Kaish 2021-10-08T16:21:18Z

I enjoyed playing this game a lot. Although the art style is beautiful and cute, The main selling point was actually the humor. The music, with every sound effect were actually made by someone's voice. Now that's dedication.

Nicely done

Solarice Inc. by Blood_Jackal23 2021-10-04T22:01:16Z

Well, the game decided to crap out on me at the last hour. Oh well, gotta learn to take the L

Solarice Inc. by Blood_Jackal23 2021-10-06T12:59:22Z

yea the LMB and RMB buttons were working fine in the editor, but decided to stop working in the build. Sadly, I had run out of time so I couldn't fix it.
