LD18 — Enemies as Weapons

HAckBotz by recursor 2010-09-02T15:08:00

I found it got really difficult in the third level, but once I got the hang of it, I made it a few levels later. I like the robot voice. It made me laugh a few times. B-)

The Robots and I by PaulSB 2010-09-02T11:32:00

The screen flickers, the characters move diagonally in weird ways, and sometimes the game restarts without letting me see how I did.

Otherwise, I like the hacking mechanic. I thought it was odd when it said that I only got 0 robots, but then I realized that they aren't stopped unless they kill each other. Good use of the theme!

Architector by JMNielly 2010-09-01T19:04:00

I loved the use of the theme, and the dragon/jet pack is ingenious! The different colors of the sky to indicate height was a good idea. While it was annoying that I couldn't see where I was dropping the building parts, I found that moving the mouse to the bottom of the screen let me see what was coming before it would drop.

Fromulus by brandoncash 2010-09-02T06:49:00

I like the death animation. I wish there was an indicator to show what spell you had active. I liked how the monsters ran around, setting each other on fire.

It's too bad that there isn't a more elaborate level to go with the game.

AVOIDAL by HybridMind 2010-09-02T12:15:00

You lose health much more rapidly than you can gain it. The game rewards you for succeeding multiple times in a row without being hit, but being hit has such a negative impact that avoiding being hit is its own reward. It's like getting bonus allowance for not playing in the middle of the street. B-)

Otherwise, it's highly polished aesthetically, and I see a lot of potential. Nice job!

dance dance dance by nyarla 2010-09-02T10:40:00

I loved it when I discovered that someone could steal my dance partner! There was surprising variety in that the flying glasses, drunken rages, and flinged partners were all potentially damaging. It was quirky and fun overall!

Mind Operated Control Device by EmptyFlash 2010-09-02T15:14:00

The puzzle aspect was nice. While the controls took some getting used to, I was able to play through to the end. It's too bad that there were more levels. The idea of different gun behaviors and puzzles made it a refreshing change of pace.

Money Thief by Zachary Lewis 2010-09-02T06:32:00

I love the bandito-themed music! The controls were a little frustrating. Sometimes I was behind the dumpster, but it wouldn't register my Down+X, and there are some incredibly hard jumps. I'm in the Windy City on the lower level, and there is one jump I can't make even though I've been trying for some time.

Great work oveall!

Omnicide by nitram_cero 2010-09-02T12:05:00

I like how there was that background that scrolled by, but it made me think there was an ending. Also, once I found that I could hold the button down and carry the entire army, it was super easy. I thought that when your power was low, you couldn't block anymore, but if you can pick them up before they fire, it wouldn't matter anyway.

Throwing was difficult. Sometimes I could chuck an enemy into the next two platforms, but most of the time I could only drop them.

Cool concept though, and reminiscent of Canabalt!

LD24 — Evolution

My Pairs and Me by Evilion 2012-08-27T14:11:00

I didn't understand how my actions affected the world. Buildings and evolution would appear independent of my interaction, it seemed.

The Darkness Evolve!! by juaxix 2012-08-27T14:22:00

The controls were unintuitive. I felt that there was no challenge other than fighting the controls. Nothing prevented me from collecting dark matter, so evolution seemed to be a matter of not quitting.

OS: Evolution by zatyka 2012-08-27T15:01:00

I liked the graphics. The animation of the player's character is pretty nice.

The controls were a little frustrating for me. It took me a bit to realize where the mouse cursor was in relation to the character mattered, and even then the entire game was a large series of jumping puzzles. And I apparently don't do well at jumping puzzles. I got stuck at Level 6.

The game's mood was reminiscent of Strong AI by mrfun for LD#11, which was reminiscent of Portal.

A Blug's Life by iaman 2012-08-28T21:01:00

The graphics are adorable, and I wish there were more levels so I could better use the upgrades in the last room.

Evolver.exe + Src! by Uhfgood 2012-08-27T15:15:00

It took me a moment to figure out that I completed the game. It wasn't clear that I had completed a level, and it felt like the only interaction I had was in pressing the right key to start the level.

In talking with Uhfgood about it, it seemed the idea was that the game itself was evolving as you play, so each level, new interactivity and mechanics would get added. That's a really clever concept, and it's too bad this entry only hints at it.

LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

Mutants Must Die by noonat 2015-04-20T02:20:00

I liked how juicy the game is. The explosions and gibs were satisfying, and I liked that I could beat up on a corpse until the skeleton popped out.

It's too bad you couldn't get more in. I think it would have been funny to attack enemies with the bodies of other enemies.

Dungeon Master by GagaPete 2015-04-28T03:32:00

It's reminiscent of Dungeon Keeper. I realized I needed to collect a few of the enemies in the same area in order to kill them with fewer minions. The game was slower-paced than I would like, as it took awhile to search for them while scrolling around, and then another long time to find the minions again.

The Pamphleteers by Move127 2015-04-20T03:05:00

It locked up twice on me, but I really enjoyed the way you met the theme with this game.

It's slow at first, but once I had a few pamphleteers to manage, it got a bit more intense. Maybe start with more than one?

The instructions at the start were kind of intimidating.

Slime Trap by Digiraze 2015-04-20T13:28:00

I thought I had the enemy surrounded, but it turned out that I needed to surround it with a space in between for the red gas. Once I figured that out, I found it much easier, but it definitely got more challenging, especially when those multiplying enemies came.

Bits and Pieces by tigerbyte 2015-04-28T02:44:00

Hmm, it runs very slowly in HTML5 in Firefox on my Ubuntu system, but I see it runs quite fast in Chromium. I love the fast pace, and I love how you can attack the enemies both by shooting the junk and by picking up the junk if the enemies are between you, allowing you to rack up some quick combos if you have a huge trail of enemies chasing you.
Good work!

A Game of Drones by TD5 2015-04-28T02:59:00

Very neat concept! I wish I could tell the drone to move based on a position southwest or northeast.

Bears and Bees by Harley77 2015-04-20T03:08:00

I liked how even the bees looked like they died when you used a Fart. I made it to the end after dying a few times. Those suits are killer.

Escape The Killer by Nomys_Tempar 2015-04-20T14:15:00

I found myself compelled to keep playing it and figure out all of the achievements. Good work!

LD33 — You are the Monster

Night of the Monster by Thinkofdeath 2015-08-26T11:56:00

Wall jumping is neat, except when I didn't intend for it to happen, which meant I jumped away from where I wanted to go more than a few times.

The music is great for an action game.

The Much Loved Monster by IndigoWolf 2015-08-24T14:12:00

I found it confusing when I realized that aside from two branching paths, the game doesn't progress. You can kill your Deputy Grand Leader, but apparently he comes back as if nothing happened when you "attend to other issues".

So I guess that means I found the game incomplete.

But good work on the theme! It was quite chilling to see the choices I had before me.

I had the game in a maximized window and saw that the monstrosity meter was missing because apparently it is too far to the right.

Delivery! by the31 2015-08-27T22:02:00

I had a lot of fun driving this thing around! It took me some time to get used to the controls, which meant I didn't collect the package for some time, but it was fun hitting ramps and testing the suspension.

The only thing missing was audio so I could do this: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=673_1425223597

Monster Jailbreak by voxel 2015-08-25T19:45:00

I loved the way various elements are introduced through each level, and I liked how the entire level is falling to give a timer without using a visible clock.

I found it confusing when I fell off the platform. Sometimes I would quickly lose health and eventually die, but sometimes it took forever to lose health, costing me time.

I also found a way to cheat: if I go in the opposite direction I should go from the start of a level, when the camera finally pans back, for some reason it centers over the goal, which means once I die, I respawn right on top.

The music was fun, and the sound effects were cute.

Monster is a Mommy by pansapiens 2015-08-27T14:41:00

Cute! I like the faces on the magnet tanks, as if they don't enjoy their jobs but they have to do it.

I found that touching the tanks doesn't hurt, so you can stand off to the side and aim slight over the eggs and hit missiles and tanks relatively easily.

The roar is nice and echo-y, as if the mother epically failed her young.

Bombercat by orion_black 2015-08-27T20:09:00

I wasn't sure why the bomb was knocking me out of the arena, but the comments seem to indicate that things were being drawn in the wrong place.

I wasn't clear why I would do anything other than bat the enemies.

Grow by fullmontis 2015-08-26T11:49:00

Very creepy graphics!

I liked the idea that it costs you something to grow them, but you have to wait for them to start getting bigger before consuming them. It gets pretty frantic at the end since you are losing health constantly and yet need to wait before you can gain it.

Sirens by miotatsu 2015-08-27T20:56:00

It crashed at one point.

The audio was ridiculous, especially the singing and the sound effects of the crashing ships. B-)

I like how your weapons are also your defense. It took me a long time to build up to 200 GP, and I wonder if the balance is off.

Monster Trader by Treks 2015-08-27T15:32:00

Oh, I finished the game!

I found it easy to trade when the other party is selling low and buying high. B-)

I like the graphics, although I was thrown off by how washed out it all seemed at first. The colors blend in together too much, and it took me a few seconds to recognize I was the dragon among the trees.

The music was very bard-like, but the sound effects were very loud in comparison.

I rarely had to resort to fighting, and so for a long time I didn't know what health was for. If occasionally you get attacked by bandits (and then had a way to heal back up), it might make it feel like health is more integrated.

As it is, I only lost health if I attacked or tried to flee, and since trading seems to always be safe, I might as well trade.

Good work!

Monster Training Simulator 2015 by iossif 2015-08-27T21:08:00

Heh, I laughed at the drill sergeant.

Typing games! It seems that it dealt only with a subset of keys, and I wonder why.

It took me a few tries to understand why I had failed in the last challenge.

The graphics were very cohesive, although the sound effects were rough.

Dungeons Deep by lubos 2015-08-27T21:23:00

I like it. It's like a turn-based Portal.

I wasn't sure if I had reached an end or if the last room had some secret way to escape that I didn't see. If it is the end, I wish the game would say so instead of letting me continue to play. If it isn't, well, I've failed to figure it out.

Beautiful aesthetics.

Plothole by RedPanda 2015-08-27T21:34:00

Well done for what is there, and I wish more was there. I like the direction you were taking it.

Free Me, You Idiots! by GBGames 2015-08-26T13:56:00

AzureAspect: unfortunately, nothing that matters. The villagers have a fear value that does get increased, but because I couldn't introduce combat like I wanted to, it doesn't do anything of value. I also thought about making it a way to make your followers pray harder, but this also got missed due to time constraints.

Free Me, You Idiots! by GBGames 2015-09-06T03:17:00

pansapiens: All of those ideas would be great, and I ran out of time before I could implement them.

And yes, in fact, working on this game did make me think about how I would introduce elements into "STH!" and vice-versa. B-)

Nostromo by johnhackworth 2015-08-24T14:30:00

I wish the game let you restart it once it was over, but I love the way the ship zoomed away.

I liked how you could sense humans in nearby rooms, but I couldn't see how stealth helped. Sometimes the rooms were red, but I couldn't tell if that was the alarm or just the lighting of those rooms.

I died a few times before finally surviving until the end. Good work!

Monster Mash by Budda 2015-08-27T16:19:00

I like the concept. It's simple, and I can see it being developed into a neat mobile game.

Unfortunately, when you lose a battle, the game is impossible. You have no bones to heal, and there's no way to quit.

I also found it impossible to get anywhere. If I ignore healing, I lose limbs before I can gain enough bones to upgrade. If I heal, then I lose limbs against a really tough opponent I can't fight against.

Blobs are stupid by thebmxeur 2015-09-02T10:01:00

I liked the context-sensitive controls. It felt surprisingly polished even though the graphics were inconsistent and rough.

Crop Circles 2015 by Keith Stellyes 2015-09-02T10:21:00

I like the concept, but I had a lot of trouble with the controls. Even once I got the hang of it, I was frustrated. It seems that if I am going too fast up or down, I can't change my speed left or right, which was unintuitive.

I finally made it to the 2nd level, but now it seems that I can't control my speed as easily as I go too fast even though I'm not pressing and holding the keys any longer than I did on the first level.

There was only one bonus level even though the menu indicates there will be multiple. I liked it, but it also had strange controls. Why the ship moves to the right immediately is bizarre to me, and it seems that it goes so fast that I can't easily control it.

The sandbox menu item didn't work for me.

Hydra Confusion by concalf 2015-08-25T20:29:00

I love the concept of this game. I used to be obsessed about hydras as a kid.

I love the art. It's like my doodles of hydras brought to life.

Sometimes I couldn't figure out where the hydra was going, but I like how you have to balance the needs of the different heads. It's easier once you realize that Burny needs to burn trees and specifically shouldn't burn bushes. B-)

Fear me by joe 2015-08-24T14:47:00

Ohhhh, ok, I got it now. You want to be seen, but not too much.

I liked how the sleeper cowered as you got closer, and if you were too noticed that she turned on the light, which made hiding important sometimes.

I agree that the timer was confusing because the game otherwise feels turnbased, and I found it frustrating that the monster has to take up some of that precious time turning around.

Neat concept, and good use of the theme!

Looks Dead by samfreeman05 2015-08-26T12:10:00

I am using Firefox 40.0 on Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit. It seems like the mouse cursor won't actually follow my mouse, so I couldn't play the game.

Sewer Glue by Damdoshi 2015-08-26T12:41:00

I couldn't run it:

$ ldd sewerglue
linux-vdso.so.1 => (0x00007ffda83f3000)
libsfml-graphics.so.2.3 => not found
libsfml-audio.so.2.3 => not found
libsfml-window.so.2.3 => not found
libsfml-system.so.2.3 => not found

And when I tried to install the libraries, my Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit system had libsfml-graphics2/window2/system2, which seems different enough to be a problem.

Sex monster by Sublustris 2015-08-24T13:14:00

I see an icon telling me to get Flash Player, but a quick test on another site shows me that I do indeed have it installed. I can't play your game.

Sex monster by Sublustris 2015-08-25T12:29:00

I used to think you could divorce the game from its aesthetics, but rape is a huge part of this game. While I could imagine a good game being made about misogyny, rape, and sexual assault, a game that treats these so casually can't be a good one.

Killer Fish by Mantlair 2015-09-02T10:53:00

It took me a few minutes to get used to the controls. I was confused by the tutorial telling me about a time limit because the tutorial has no time limit.

I liked being able to shoot body parts at enemies, and the regrowth made for a natural-looking cooldown period between attacks. I found it really difficult to control when I was out of the water, and while I expected it to be more difficult, it felt really unintuitive. Sometimes I would bounce to the left, and sometimes I would bounce to the right, and it felt random to me.

I found one guy's torso fishing on the surface of the water without a visible boat.

The music felt very Jaws-ish without being too much of an homage.

Good work!

Crazy Alien by approxx 2015-08-24T13:23:00

It crashed when a human killed me on the second level, but I was pleased to see that it started me on that level and that I didn't have to repeat the first.

The controls were smooth, and the music was great for atmosphere. I love the little touches with the animations. Good work for your first LD game!

Hydro Carbon by bentglasstube 2015-09-02T11:13:00

I liked how well this game is put together. Everything seemed to balance well. The more oil spilled, the harder it is to protect your "investment" from hippies.

On the other hand, it felt really slow when I wasn't using my precious oil to speed along, and once you had a lot of coverage out there, it seemed animals wouldn't show up as often.

The music was good, and the sound effects worked well.

Manhattan Monstrosity by Twiebs 2015-08-27T18:47:00

It was frantic at times, and the lasers and beeps helped with it, but I managed to finally hit the city.

And I did it without using the cheat I discovered: if you fly up and to the left, you can fly over the mountain range there and then go underneath the world. Then you can fly all the way to the end without threat...until the end. You then have to contend with missiles as you fly up and over the mountain range and backtrack to the city. I came close twice doing it this way, but I always missed the city, and I'm glad I managed to do it legitimately.

Trickers by Dege 2015-08-27T18:54:00

Ok, it's like Dance Dance Revolution: Halloween Scare Edition. I had trouble, but I managed to scare the old man on the first try. Then I purposefully tried to lose to see what happens.

I like how the faces changed based on how well you're doing, but it was subtle and I didn't notice it at first. I'm concentrating on the arrows, so I need something a bit visibly "louder" to let me know how things are going.

Control- wise, I think it felt super responsive. I never felt like I missed when I should have gotten a hit.

I Hunger by David Yates 2015-08-29T20:34:00

I managed to make it through a few of the endings. I liked how my choices impacted the fate of Man, and how depending on those choices, Man can survive my punishments and I can keep playing.

Sea Monster by cicanci 2015-09-02T11:23:00

It's a neat concept. I liked the laid-back music as it reminded me of a relaxing beach scene, and the splishy-splashy of the sound effects were nice.

Good use of minimalistic graphics. The shadow of the monster underwater is clever, but I didn't understand the point of the hexagon grid. The different boat colors didn't seem to signify any game play purpose, but that's fine.

Unfortunately, I found it too easy since there was no timing necessary and all I had to do was hang out on the island. There was no challenge to worry about.

Hungry Waters by MAnimal 2015-08-24T15:01:00

I liked the music a lot. It made it feel lighthearted and cosmopolitan, like the monster decided to take a trip to another country and see the sights.

It was hard to avoid the..brains?...of the pink people once they were in the water. It took me a few seconds to realize you aren't supposed to eat them because I thought the "Ow!" was them and not me.

Goloumo by HippGame 2015-08-27T19:17:00

I really liked the click & drag mechanics. I wondered why the elevator didn't move, but then I remembered what the game has taught me so far. I didn't understand the exploding flower at the beginning, but that's fine. The entire game world was something fun to explore.

It wasn't clear to me that that I needed the key to go back to the wooden structure that glowed near the sign that said how to sprint.

Good work!

Blue Helmet Beatdown by madjackmcmad 2015-09-04T12:26:00

I made it to wave 29 with 2,277,840 points. I kept getting pleasantly surprised by the different bosses.

At some point I felt like I was invincible and at the end I felt like I couldn't help but lose. I don't know if it was fatigue or if the difficulty ramped up or what.

I loved how so much was flying on the screen creating chaos, especially when the scrolling sped up.

I find the UN an odd choice to demonize in this game, but it provided a great collection of names to modify for the boss battles.

A solid game.

Vampire Hugs by ProfessorParky 2015-08-27T03:29:00

For some reason, I'm seeing 3 fps which makes the game very unplayable. I won't rate it because the screenshot seems to indicate that I should be seeing a more reasonable framerate and I don't think it would be fair.

Emm... Boo! by Ulukai 2015-08-31T11:29:00

I really like the idea behind this one.

The roar sound was great. The music was subtle.

I found the tutorial to be more interesting than the actual game, unfortunately. The game was very difficult and seemed to have a lack of progression. I can scare some kids or not, and the result is the same.

Cucumis Love by muit 2015-08-27T19:25:00

Downloaded the Linux version. Both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions had a problem with the controls. I could press one of the WASD keys, but after that, the game never paid attention to my keypresses. Clicking and shooting worked, but I was stuck standing at whatever wall I ran into. Maybe a problem with the port? I didn't vote as a result.

Poopie the Flying Monster by Sadale 2015-08-27T19:58:00

I don't think you can ever say that a political message isn't intended, but you especially can't when you have political leaders involved in a game.

I laughed when the police car flew into the air after me.

It is too slow to start, but once the upgrades come, then the game picks up speed and becomes very enjoyable.

Monstrous by mceier 2015-08-27T03:46:00

Split-screen action! Unfortunately, it means needing a second player, but I can see how going head-to-head in this simple game can actually be a lot of fun. Next challenge: 4-player split-screen!

I can see it being more fun if there was more variety and challenge, such as dangerous victims or the ability to push each other out of the way to steal victims or something like that. Also, when it was down to two victims left, I spent a long time hunting them down. Perhaps a minimap would help?

I like how creepy the music is. It's repetitive, but creepy.

Treasure Keeper by jelch 2015-08-29T21:05:00

I like this twist on Tower Defense. A bit slow, but kind of cute.

I wish there was a way to kill the guys who run to the top. Also, the guys who set the traps were obnoxiously hard to get to, and it got tedious. I wasn't sure if there was an ending because I stopped trying after a certain point.

The sound effects were harsh, but I like the mood set by the music.

Dreadwolf by PIN34PPLE 2015-08-26T12:07:00

I can't play it in the browser, and when I click on the Linux link, it says I need to request access. Is it not publicly available?

Dreadwolf by PIN34PPLE 2015-08-27T03:22:00

I had a hard time. Every time I thought I figured out how to kill the archers (is it a tiny hit box? if I aim at his left arm, does it work better?), I get killed because multiple unsuccessful attacks when surrounded spells doom. Maybe I just had to hit them multiple times, but there was no indication that my attacks were successful or that the heroes were stronger and had more health, and so I assumed I was just missing the entire time.

I liked the mood. I didn't really get a sense of the need for lighting the torches other than that it gets dark, and what I found weird was that instead of lighting the torch I was at, it seemed like the lights would go on somewhere else.

You are the Monst-hair by polskais1 2015-08-26T12:04:00

I can't find the game. The link takes me to the Kongregate homepage. Has it been taken down?

Campaign Trail OF BODIES by inurashii 2015-08-24T15:20:00

The best game I've played so far. It took me awhile to realize that I had a staff to manage, so I had a bunch of idle monsters.

You had an amazing variety of content. Good work!

Sefydlogiad by chameco 2015-08-27T04:03:00

It was fairly easy to get to the chicken tenders. I purposefully lost and laughed at how my disturbance level got to over 9000.

A very bizarre game with very similar controls to a roguelike.

Rebellion of the Slimes by someone9999 2015-08-26T13:18:00

I played this game way longer than I anticipated. I think the balance is off. It took too long to build the first set of spikes, and by the time it is easier, I find I need the mana to escape the hordes.

I think the slimes looked adorable, as if they aren't being menacing but just doing what everyone else is doing.

Hero's Quest by GFM 2015-08-26T13:53:00

Oh, my heart broke when I heard the squeek and saw the tearful faces of the blue slimes!

I liked how you introduced each of the different slimes in their own area before combining them. It wasn't clear that they got stronger, and so I died when I didn't expect the red slime to survive the attack.

The controls were a bit clunky in that attacking never felt right, but otherwise it was smooth.

The theme was a bit on the nose, although from many other comments, apparently it is still too hard to tell that there's a question of who the real monster is even though it is telegraphed from the intro and the "good ending?" screen, and it definitely shows in the "bad ending?" screen.

Good work!

Glauron by Frozen Fractal 2015-08-25T20:01:00

Beautiful game! I love the use of simple dark shapes against a sunset.

I never did understand what the white arrows did differently from black arrows. I did like the multipliers you could get for hitting multiple things in one shot, and getting multiple hearts for hitting churches/steeples seemed to always come when I needed them most.

On my final attempt, I got 1588 points, and I fell right before Level 5! A great game.

Was there audio? I didn't hear anything, but I see you want to be rated in it.

Programmatic Capitalism by Simon 2015-08-25T19:34:00

Ok, I had dual-screens, and when I switched to a single screen, then the fullscreen flickering stopped and I could play the game correctly.

I liked the textures of the maze, as it made it futuristic and otherwordly.

It wasn't until I managed to put myself directly in front of the pill's face that I could see that there is danger to being in its way, although I almost have to mess up on purpose for it to be a real concern.

It is very easy to not lose, but there doesn't seem to be a way to win. I hit the pill multiple times but it seems to have infinite lives, and so do I.

LD50 — Delay the inevitable

Escape The Unstoppable Gooey Blob by OddballDave 2022-04-21T03:49:06Z

Quite fun! I know I quickly found that I liked some weapons more than others. I wish the flame thrower was more effective.

The controls were intuitive, and you did well on the UI. I found the voice effects were harsh and loud compared to the music, which was awkward at night as I am playing it with my speakers instead of headphones.

Terrible Brakes by TimBeaudet 2022-04-05T19:00:01Z

It took me many attempts to get to Zone 2, but I finally did it and ended up driving backwards in Zone 3 somehow.

I found myself trying over and over, so it was very compelling game play even though I generally don't seek out racing games. I stopped in Zone 5 but I don't know if it was a legit Zone 5 or if I happened to have fallen off the track into Zone 5. And knowing that people made it 4x as far makes me want to keep trying.

And the "vroom vroom" sound effects were pretty funny. The music was rocking.

Live For Later Or Live For Now by khaotom 2022-04-09T02:35:42Z

The audio stole the show here. The music was very soothing, and the entire experience was meditative. At first I was frustrated by the slow pace and the alarm, but then I allowed myself to experience it fully.

The mechanic of choosing left or right reminded me of Reigns. I'm not sure what message it was trying to tell, nor could I tell if my choices had much of a consequence beyond my next set of choices, but I know I was making deliberate decisions each time. As the skulls appeared, I got the impression that death was inevitable. I danced. I skipped work to go out in Nature. I exercised. I played video games, but only sometimes when my alternative was to passively watch TV (I think? Maybe it was dance dance revolution?). I got a good night's sleep. I got up to enjoy the day instead of sleeping in. I ignored social media. I also ignored the incessant beeping of the alarm even as I watched the clock.

As the skulls added up and turned red, I made the decision to live life the way I always did.

And as I walk away from this game, I think about the decisions I make in actual life in contrast. Thanks.

The BIMBLES vs the inevitable forces of tedium by tigerfinch 2022-04-20T17:11:48Z

The music was funky, the graphics were hand-crafted loveliness, and the controls were intuitive.

It reminded me of RC Pro-Am.

The AI-rubber banding was a struggle to deal with...until I decided that I didn't need roads. In my third playthrough, I decided to drive backwards instead, found some shortcuts, and waited at the finish line.

And one was still almost there before me!

Other than the text explaining the inevitable, I didn't get a feel from it in the race itself.

I had a great time! Thanks!

Kiwis Can't Fly by DDRKirbyISQ 2022-04-08T03:34:59Z

What a gorgeous and moving game you've made! It's definitely the highlight of the games I've reviewed so far. I felt like I was playing music and it somehow always sounded harmonious. The cats on broomsticks were my favorite. I smiled a lot playing it.

The ending was both sad and beautiful. Well done!

Kiwis Can't Fly by DDRKirbyISQ 2022-04-22T03:46:57Z

Congratulations!

Putyn Invaders by Pio 2022-04-20T16:39:26Z

At first I got excited because I long ago made a bullet-hell Space Invaders clone, and this was much better implemented! Having a health bar instead of being one-shot killed was a nice discovery.

It took me some time to realize I could move up and down as well as left and right. Once I did, I found it quite easy to play, collect health power-ups, etc.

I laughed when I saw the final boss, and I liked realizing that I could shoot through the attacks.

It felt like a simple game, but once I read the reviews above, I tried to win without firing a shot, and it was more difficult, but I did it! I loved that the game allowed me to try. Well done!

The Inglorious Yet Highly Stimulating Life of an Underpaid Graduate Student 2 by Kyle Farwell 2022-04-21T17:22:40Z

I used to work in tech support. This game made me laugh and remember some of the calls I once got.

I survived 20 calls.

I had trouble figuring out what commands or sequence of words would work, but after a bit I think I got the hang of it, although I still wasn't sure what to do with a broken mouse.

The graphics were well done. I liked the echo the mechanical keyboard sound effects were making as I typed on my own mechanical keyboard. B-)

I found that hitting certain shortcut keys like "F" for fullscreen would trigger if the caller hung up while I was typing, resulting in a jarring change in window dimensions. I also accidentally opened the accessibility menu a few times.

I got a perfect performance review, and the screaming was very loud and made me glad no one else was home when I was playing.

The Sea Won't Stop by m11 2022-04-08T15:01:41Z

"That was exactly the type of health and safety measure that you objected to, and which drove you to piracy." Hah! Nice social commentary. B-)

I enjoyed the humor. It was a quick game, and I found I explored each branch too soon, but I enjoyed it all the same.

RogueTime by shared 2022-04-20T21:13:23Z

I enjoyed playing this one. It kind of felt like Zelda II/Megaman. I wish I had more attack options.

It was incredibly satisfying to have one attack streak through multiple enemies at once, though.

I ran into what I think was a bug in which I couldn't damage a knight at all, and I thought maybe I had encountered something new, that I needed a new tool or weapon I hadn't found yet, but I couldn't figure out what to do, so I restarted.

I wish I had more feedback on the screen to let me know what upgrades I had equipped at any given time. It wasn't clear if I lost them between levels, but I assume I did.

Otherwise, I thought the sound effects were serviceable. The graphics were simple but easy to read. I liked the color scheme.

Lazer Bean by johnnysix 2022-04-12T19:34:58Z

Ooh, I was looking forward to this one from your blog posts!

I like how the giant rocks break down the floors. It is satisfying to see the floor break up from giant tiles to smaller tiles to even smaller tiles.

Picking up the gun was something I didn't realize I needed to do in my first playthrough, and I thought I was misunderstanding the controls. Then when I launched the gun into the air after jumping, I found myself wishing the character would automatically pick it up instead of requiring me to move more to get it. It felt clumsy, but I don't know if it was a good clumsy that added challenge on purpose or a bad clumsy in that the controls could have been tighter.

I liked the special effects. The laser is powerful but limited, and I liked that. The knock-back also added some challenge, making it important to know where to stand relative to any breaches. When I was on a lower part of a particular floor, I was delighted and horrified to discover that the laser also destroys the floor tiles.

I laughed when I thought I found a good spot to stand, only to discover that there was a massive pile of smaller rocks offscreen that caused a huge problem when a breach let them all loose.

I wish I had a minimap so I could see all levels or at least the portal to see how things are going. And I wish I had a way to jump back up to a previous level, especially if I left my gun up there.

The audio was serviceable, and I loved the sound effect for jumping.

Dont Sleep by PhoenixofForce 2022-04-05T13:59:46Z

I tried the standalone Linux build. The main graphics slowly move off the bottom of the screen, I see text at the top, and then this.Screenshot from 2022-04-05 08-59-17.png

I imagine it wasn't intentional?

EDIT: I tried to capture the graphics moving off the bottom of the screen, but they weren't as slow as I thought. See how they are almost gone?Screenshot from 2022-04-05 09-00-55.png

Dont Sleep by PhoenixofForce 2022-04-05T14:45:06Z

@PhoenixofForce The controller was it! I unplugged it, and the graphics stayed put!

"What is coyote time?" Haha! I think my mistake was reading a book instead of dancing more, but I made it to 02:16 my second time.

I love the goofy and fun animations.

I wish I had a better idea of what effect each action was having, but maybe that's part of the game is trying again and again and seeing what works and what not to do.

Pax Nebulae by p-r 2022-04-06T04:56:04Z

Ooh, now it is working! I like the music and sound effects.

It feels like an expansive world, with lots to explore. Movement was a little unintuitive, as I didn't realize I was traveling multiple spaces at a time. At some point, I ended up running out of fuel with no way to buy more as I was stranded, but the game kept going.

I managed to do a bit of trading, but I didn't feel the urgency that the intro to the game seemed to imply. The combat was interesting, sorta like Risk in that you can put multiple units into the attack, but if there is only one opponent, then you can really only use one attacker at a time. I realized I should have pulled one of my scouts out of the attack before it got destroyed, so there was some neat tactical aspects to the fighting. I felt accomplishing taking out my first communications system, as it felt like there was going to be an endless collection of capital ships to fight with my lowly scouts.

The Subtle Hourglass by Eli Delventhal 2022-04-20T19:14:07Z

This was a very clever game, and one of my favorites so far this LD. I really liked the rewind mechanic and deal with your clones dynamic.

I wish the attacks were able to hit enemies above and below, as I found myself stuck sometimes trying to maneuver myself to the left or right of an enemy who seems to have an entire circle of attack.

The chaos that occurs the longer you play was hilarious, and it just kept getting worse. There is some point at which I felt like I might as well restart a new game as I can't make progress past myself. I can see a more polished version of this game handling that situation automatically or otherwise allowing for it to be mitigated.

But I kept playing it again, because I wanted to rescue that second sibling!

Strategically, I realized I needed to try to time my attacks such that my future self can more easily avoid it. "Stand by that blood stain, then attack the slime." "Last time I killed myself because my past self attacked a demon in a doorway. Let's not do that this time." It's got depth!

I loved it. Great work on this one! The music, the special effects, the concept were all great, and I look forward to seeing this one developed with more polish if you plan on it.

The Subtle Hourglass by Eli Delventhal 2022-04-21T03:39:54Z

Oh, and to clarify, by polish, I meant balancing and such. The general execution of this game is otherwise fantastic. I loved the spinning hourglass in particular.

Mike Quarter (The Kitchen Porter) by Madbeagle 2022-04-05T13:08:18Z

I love this take on Tapper! It's simple and intuitive yet challenging.

I wonder if it would be enjoyable for the player if they can catch a falling dish, getting that "Whew! Just in the nick of time!" feeling.

The music is enjoyable and seems to fit the mood of the game just right, and the barks made me laugh. Well done on Audio!

Unfortunately, it took me awhile to figure out what the "Fire" button was. As far as I know, the mouse isn't used in the game except to click the button on the conveyor belt you're in front of at the time, and so I was trying all of the keyboard buttons that I thought made sense and even some that I didn't before I accidentally figured out to use the left mouse button.

Once I did, the challenge felt a lot better, as I could recognize that if I would have paused THIS belt at THAT time I might have done better this round. It opens up the game play a lot in a way that I didn't expect. Well done!

22h38 by Katutt 2022-04-05T18:29:06Z

I love how time not only resets but also further back each time you touch a shrine. Very cool idea!

And I love how the destruction at the end of the world never stops being intimidating. A very beautiful effect.

The music is great, and I liked how it was different based on where you were in the world.

"Responsibility" was spelled wrong. I had trouble with the controls before getting used to them.

Will There Bee Another? by Gabriel Dias Oliveira de Almeida 2022-04-07T21:28:49Z

Yes! After way too many tries, I finally got a date to go skating!

I like how the game captures the back and forth of getting to know someone. You don't know what might be interesting for them, you don't know whether what interests you might turn them off and whether or not it is a deal-breaker, etc.

The art was adorable. I wish there were some sound effects or music to go with it.

The Climber by Necdilzor 2022-04-19T15:48:29Z

As others have said, changing the speed or even just having it be faster overall might help make it less meditative and more frantic. The most intense part was the very beginning, in which not paying attention means losing right away. Otherwise, it was easy to avoid the water so long as I didn't make a mistake.

I wasn't able to jump once at the top of a ladder, which may or may not have been intended, but basically I needed to climb, then fall sideways to land on something below.

Good job getting music in! Audio is often delayed until it is too late.

Prolonging the Party by MarkoPoloDev 2022-04-21T02:53:20Z

The animation of the main character is fantastic, as well as the poses in general. I loved the way the decorations changed the look and sound of the environment. The special effects, the attacks, the way the coins bounce and get pulled in when you have the power-up, the way the character moves so fluidly were all well done.

I enjoyed exploring the world, and I remember when I got surprised that there were two areas to buy party supplies, as I originally thought I found a shortcut to the one. It was also fun to find secret areas. I want to think more about the repercussions of making something like secret areas so ubiquitous instead of rare in a game.

I was delighted that the game didn't end when you ran out of time. It just pulled you back to the home base. Then I realized that I didn't need to return on my own, so I was able to explore more fully.

I managed to get all the guests, piggy banks, and hourglasses, and then I was wondering what I was supposed to do. I thought maybe I had to be at the other home base, then I decided to try climbing up to the giant disco ball again. Last time I jumped all the way to the far right and nothing was there. This time, the character hovered in the air for a bit before dropping. Weird. So I jumped, and suddenly I was launched up and found the sky party to end the game. It was an accident that I found it, and I only decided to pursue it because I saw someone had an ending here.

Prolonging the Party by MarkoPoloDev 2022-04-21T03:36:16Z

Fruitloose by caeonosphere 2022-04-20T17:31:33Z

I loved the entire feel of it. The music, the cute graphics, and the concept all worked well together.

It was a lot of fun figuring out how to get the hungry turnip to turn back down to go the long way over and over. I liked how each turn it moved just a little further each time, which meant that you couldn't use the same moves forever, that it was inevitable that it'll get there.

Screenshot from 2022-04-20 12-21-49.png

I thought I did well, but now I see the reviews above, and see I did only somewhat well. B-)

Screenshot from 2022-04-20 12-27-02.png

I didn't realize that I could only move one wall at a time, so I was confused at first. Once I realized the turn was "Choose one wall to move, then confirm placement", it made more sense.

Well done!

Engineer's Last Stand by shp 2022-04-19T03:49:55Z

It reminded me of Crimsonland and similar games, with the unique mechanic of placing guns rather than being the gun. I found myself playing over and over, and I still haven't gotten the better-than-gold medal.

I found I could get stuck in the wall on the north side of the starting circle of walls, which is frustrating.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed the combination of unending waves of enemies, the inevitable destruction of the guns I was placing, and the ability of the guns to hurt you if you are in the way, which affected how I wanted to experiment with placing them from one attempt to another. The risk/reward of running out into the open to collect extra money is a nice dynamic, as well. I found that I enjoyed combining the shotgun with the cheaper machine gun early on until I could afford the better weapons.

I found myself wishing there was more player feedback so I could know if I was getting hurt, although I loved the shaky health bar feedback when the grenade launcher/RPG accidentally hits you.

The eventual decay of placed turrets meant that any solid defense I construct will eventually give way if I don't keep an eye on it, so I am constantly on the move not only to avoid enemies but also to build replacements as soon as I see a need for them. The action is constant, and the energy is fantastic. Well done!

Stop the clock by Shampop 2022-04-07T14:51:06Z

Ok, I first tried playing this silent, and it is a completely different and more engaging experience with the audio. I laughed as the clock and music tries to trick me into clicking at the wrong time. It's a very simple game but felt very engaging. Well done!

Life On Mars by anstabo 2022-04-21T04:20:27Z

Gorgeous graphics! I don't play a lot of modern games, but I was very amazed by the visuals and don't recall ever seeing anything like this before. The way the screen changed when you were in shadow and slowly recovered when you got back into sunlight was a nice touch.

I struggled with the very sensitive mouse controls (web version, I don't have Windows), and I struggled when I first got the wheels because I fell off of the platform that would have taken me into the wider open area and had a hard time jumping back up without falling on my side.

Falling into craters was scary.

I enjoyed the tunes. It gave it a campy kind of feel somehow.

Well done!

Out of Breath by raptor851 2022-04-08T15:26:34Z

I had to turn up the volume to max to hear the audio, so I am glad I read the comments above. It definitely changed the feel of the game, especially when entering a room with a droning sound.

It took me three tries to "win". As mentioned above, there were a few times I walked into a room and immediately popped back out due to how the subsequent door was placed.

I liked the hand-drawn art, including the parts that looked partially erased to give that "hand of the artist" kind of feel. The dimming as your O2 gets lower was a nice touch. The combination puzzle is one of those that I imagine many of my fellow Americans getting stuck on. B-)

Mrs Applebee's garden by zubspace 2022-04-20T14:47:57Z

I LOVE THAT DUCK WADDLE and TAIL WAG!

The controls were too sensitive, but I tried to go with it. Maybe this is how ducks feel when the move.

The waking up sequence at the beginning sounded and felt like a Zelda cinematic.

The bloom lighting was intense! It was gorgeous outside the home.

The ending was a sad surprise. I wasn't sure if there was more to do since the text appeared saying it was over but the game didn't exactly end.

Heal me, please! by Andrey_Zhukov 2022-04-07T20:03:36Z

As everyone said, the art is very nice and stylized, and I found the various ailments to be quite humorous (kissing disease?).

Earlier on I was worried that I was going to inevitably run out of money, but once I discovered what each ingredient did and wasn't guessing at some anymore, I found that the challenge essentially disappeared. I healed 29 before I decided to stop because I realized I was doing so well that I was not having problems with money anymore. Maybe the ingredients could increase in price as you use them? Maybe the boot/mushroom especially since they have no side-effects, and so you're more inclined to use other ingredients to save money?

On the other hand, it was like a perpetual puzzle in which I could calmly figure out what combination of ingredients would counteract each other AND heal the patient. I could see it being featured in https://www.youtube.com/c/ChilledOutGames

I Will Not Die. by HenanBoy 2022-04-05T20:30:13Z

I liked the impact of hitting the bee, I laughed when I saw the jackelope, and I felt really good about taking out that flying eel thing.

I was confused about the RMB instructions because nothing happened, but then I started getting power-ups that allowed me to use it. I struggled a bit with the grapple mechanic, and I wanted to do more with the boulder moving ability, like smack a creature.

I like the color palette, although I thought the bee stood out graphically more than its actual importance warrants considering most of the other creatures were monochrome.

By and large I enjoyed controlling the character, and attacks felt juicy, and I liked the race against time and the choices to make between moving forward or taking time to gain some time.

Blasty Tag by GreenPig 2022-04-08T14:45:32Z

I really enjoyed this game! It took me a few tries to get to the end, partly because some red shirt would find me in a corner during the last few seconds or because a red shirt and an orange shirt would prevent me from giving my bomb away because they just kept giving each other their own bomb. And once I was the last one standing, I laughed because the game had one more round.

The minimap helped a lot. I wished there were sound effects (I only heard music, not sure if it was on purpose, as there was a sound effects volume control). The music was short and repetitive, but it fit the frantic feel of the game.

The AI was interesting. Sometimes the other people were stuck in a corner, and sometimes they seemed very intent on targeting me or someone else.

The power-ups gave the game some longevity, as you not only were playing the main game but also gaining points to help you in future games, so even if you do poorly you feel like you are building up to something. Clever!

Computer Scientist Training Lab by YellowKamel 2022-04-21T03:34:48Z

Oof, a typing game. I found it was hard to remember to prepare a command while I was watching the movement of the character, so I would often end up typing something at the last moment.

Of course, when I did remember, sometimes the floor would change out from under me in a way that made my queued up command the wrong thing to do. Devious.

And mistyping was frustrating. B-)

The tutorial was humorous and very good at onboarding new players. Super challenging and well executed. Well done!

Can I Win as a Lv. 1 Slime? -underdog rising- by johjoh 2022-04-21T03:17:42Z

"I forgot to mention, he might swing at you more than once." Heh.

Then "The third one always gets ya." HAH!

Then "Timing, man, timing!" Come on! :-D

Since getting the sword got tedious, I thought I would just go into battle without it. Then I attacked...and got killed. Ugh. Funny, though.

The graphics are adorable. The music and sound effects are fun. I love the zoom in animation when the battle starts.

Disaster City by gbgames 2022-04-05T19:04:07Z

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

@codebug Yeah, I should have warned people about the SDL issue. Normally I try to package up the game so that it is all available, and maybe I'll create an update with the libraries in it.

I did intend to have a levee along the river that gets destroyed and causes flooding, preventing you from repairing buildings or doing other things that require passable roads, but then I intended to include a lot more disasters in Disaster City.

@mhm32167 Yeah, I ran out of time before I could make it more challenging. Ah, well.

@greenpig I can see if I can create a Windows port soon.

Disaster City by gbgames 2022-04-06T15:26:40Z

@naplz Oh? It should have just worked out of the box. What did you have to download?

Disaster City by gbgames 2022-04-06T16:20:39Z

@naplz Ah, that's still not a fun experience to go through in order to play a game.

Thanks for your praise!

Disaster City by gbgames 2022-04-06T22:39:10Z

@raptor851 Yep, that is a bug. You aren't supposed to be able to repair a building if Dot is there, but somehow I missed it until after I released the game.

And I did mean for there to be more disasters in the game, and failing that, more Dots, but I ran out of time.

Thanks for playing!

Disaster City by gbgames 2022-04-07T12:22:41Z

@silas-reinagel @lakea Thanks! I'm seriously considering making a post-compo version in which I gave this concept a bit more love and attention to see what I can make of it.

Thank you for the kind comments, @khaotom!

Disaster City by gbgames 2022-04-10T12:30:45Z

Thanks, @caudatecoder! It was meant to be a Compo game, and I used a few extra hours on my recovery day to finish it as best I could, including adding last-minute sound effects (and yes, with SFXR). It wasn't inspired by Don't Look Up. Originally there were going to actually be floods, fires, alien attacks, and other disasters, so the meteor was going to just be one more disaster...until I realized that a meteor isn't just any kind of disaster for a single city to deal with and should probably be bigger.

And thanks for streaming! I enjoyed watching someone discover how to play. I'm glad you didn't discover the bug that lets you repair buildings that Dot is still attacking because then it becomes even easier than it is. BrainoidGames' comments were insightful, too.

I ran out of time to make the ending more celebratory. There is a line of code that even says "celebrateVictory()" but all it does is change the text at the top and provide the button that exits to the main menu, which I now see should have been put somewhere else.

Disaster City by gbgames 2022-04-11T19:36:01Z

@noirox Thanks! I'm definitely considering a post-LD release with at least some of the ideas I couldn't get in.

@awsumpwner27 I'm glad you liked Dot! B-) And thanks for letting me know. That's a very weird bug, and I see that it only happens in the Windows version. If I resize the Linux version, which is what I do development with, it doesn't happen. So now I need to investigate that for future work. Thanks again!

Disaster City by gbgames 2022-04-14T21:39:49Z

Thanks, @necdilzor! If I make a post-compo version, I definitely need to balance things differently, but I am happy you had a good time anyway. B-)

Disaster City by gbgames 2022-04-20T19:18:38Z

@quinn-patrick Thanks for the playing! Yeah, I intended for there to be more variety in terms of disasters and things to worry about, like repairing the levee or investing in emergency vehicles or having a sports stadium to try to lure Dot toward it and away from residential areas. Unfortunately, I ran out of time.

And by that point, I had almost no time to really experiment and tweak with the balance of what I did implement. Had I maybe 10 minutes or so, I might have reached the same conclusion about the number of days. I made a last-minute guess, which definitely made it more challenging than it was during development, but not nearly enough.

Thanks again!

Disaster City by gbgames 2022-04-21T02:55:08Z

Thanks for playing, @oohoos! I am still seriously considering a post-LD version of the game in which I add more disasters and player options. And of course balance it better. B-)

Timeflight Alpha by Quinn_Patrick 2022-04-20T20:12:58Z

The game starts out kind of slow, but then the timer gives it an urgency that the asteroids slow movement do not. In later levels when the UFOs attack back, there seems to be some concern, although I didn't know if they were a real danger or not (no, wait, I just played again, and I see they stopped me from heading to base easily...grrr).

I liked how the ship spun around when you hit the sides or an asteroid, because then my shots went all over the place. It was especially satisfying with Gun 3. B-)

I liked the intricacy of collecting time delays to add to your score later.

The music, sound effects, and screen shake all worked together well. Good work!

Precious Sleep by mhm32167 2022-04-11T03:08:01Z

I laughed at the alarm clock on a hoverboard.

I managed to get 5th on the leaderboard after a number of tries. It felt like a constrained space to play in, which made it quite challenging to avoid demons if you didn't take them out right away.

It took me many plays to realize that the cherry bomb itself also reduces your sleepiness. Avoiding it helped me get a higher score.

The corporate speak on the right was also amusing. I didn't notice it until my first time waking up, and I found it was pretty easy to ignore throughout the game.

The sound effects and music were serviceable. I liked the speech whenever you make the demons go away, as it sounds both subtle and similar to the kind of taunt someone would say in an action film.

Princess: Unwed by saintchristopher777 2022-04-11T03:52:29Z

I discovered the table with the book and papers late in my playthrough. Since the colors and lands aren't all represented, I didn't know how to tell where my suitor went to next. Sometimes I was able to piece it together from the messages I received, but other times what I thought would make sense would result in being told he hasn't been seen in a long time.

Even when I did manage to find the suitor's next location, I found that the only clues I received were along the lines of where he was going next, and so when I ran out of weeks and talked to dear old mother, I guessed and managed to avoid that arrangement.

I tried a new game and tried to pay more attention, and this time I did get clues about my suitor being a penny-pincher and arguer. So I guess part of the challenge is finding the next area, which is hard when the description seems to take you to a land that doesn't have a known banner.

I love the pigeon, by the way.

KEEP THE POWER by caudatecoder 2022-04-09T05:24:13Z

I had to play a few times before I was able to become a super-sized dictator. The mechanics were simple, and it didn't take long before I could try to balance between media control, police support, and popularity. Eventually I was unstoppable except by the inevitable.

A very nice political commentary game.

Buhanochka Z by gdesecrate 2022-04-09T04:47:02Z

It wasn't clear that the game ended almost immediately. There was a title screen, and then there it was again.

It took a few tries before I realized that the game's start could potentially give you no safe area to move before getting killed.

After a few more tries, I remembered that Space was the jump button, so I tried to jump to safety. I managed to make it to an island in one of my tries, and then no one found me, and it had the added bonus of a camera that wasn't spinning around wildly.

Buhanochka.png

So then I wondered if there was anything more to the game besides avoiding the enemies, and I tried to make it to other islands, but I found it very difficult to control my jumps and movement.

The retro look was cute and the blood splatters were a nice touch.

The music and sound effects were serviceable.

Ready, uNsTeAdY, FIRE! by JovialKnoll 2022-04-14T22:28:19Z

When the music started, I laughed. Then when I noticed the music got more intense as the levels advanced, I was impressed. And still laughed. And I loved the sound of the laser itself.

The simple-looking production values hide a very compelling set of mechanics. Once I thought I got the hang of it, I found I was paying too much attention to avoiding the enemies and accidentally let the power level get too high too fast and fired only to realize I had no one to destroy and so self-destructed as a result. So that combination of waiting to fire but also not firing with too weak of a laser was very good design. Nice work!

I have yet to make it to the first friendly base, and I assume there are more? I also couldn't save, which maybe is what happens at that base?

Ready, uNsTeAdY, FIRE! by JovialKnoll 2022-04-15T02:25:37Z

Ok, I had to try again, and I finally did got to the friendly base! Whew!

Also, I was surprised to find that the music was stuck in my head when I stepped away from the computer earlier.

Kessler by EagleV 2022-04-05T20:50:31Z

I tried a polar orbit the second time, and then tried to follow a passing satellite until it crashed into another and spread debris around. While trying to avoid it, I crashed into unrelated debris.

And then I just had to try again. B-)

I have been playing Kerbal Space Program recently, so it took me a bit to get my mind around non-orbital mechanics, but I still liked how the camera rotated and how I found the dark side of the planet was more dangerous because it was easier to miss what was moving nearby.

Same.

@thyoi Thanks for the update. Good luck next time! Are you planning on finishing the game for the LD Extra category instead?

Study Breaks 📚 by Puree Adventure 2022-04-10T04:35:47Z

My favorite part is when the chicken face appears after cleaning the windows. It felt the most like a Warioware minigame.

The music speeding up and the sound effects in general were serviceable and helped to convey how well or badly things were going.

Overall, a quick, entertaining entry!

AstroPhysical by Arihan10 2022-04-21T17:54:42Z

It kind of reminded me of a single-player version of Spaceteam. My high score was 134.

Once I figured out how to make use of everything, I found myself preparing a lot of ore and energy. Nukes, then missiles? Solar beams, then gravity wells?

I found the game dynamics compelling, but I struggled with the visuals. The bloomy static made me feel like I needed to squint, and I got a bit of a headache.

When I launched the nuke, I liked the 1st person view (a little jarring the first time), but unfortunately if I missed...I didn't know how to get back to normal view, and I didn't seem to have a lot of degrees of freedom in terms of turning, so I couldn't seem to hit the meteor or anything.

Cool idea, and great implementation!

SferePhall by auxiliarymoose 2022-04-20T18:36:06Z

I love the fun music. It feels zany and fits the game.

It took me some time to figure out the interface in that I thought I needed to apply the tools to the sphere that showed up around the ball. Once I realized it was the area I could NOT place the tools, everything phell into place.

I sometimes fought with the camera, especially in the beginning when there were a lot of overlapping pieces.

I did manage to get the ball stuck on my second playthrough. Do I get bonus points? B-)

Impending chemical catastrophe by codebug 2022-04-11T03:18:37Z

I found that it was mentally challenging, especially as the drips kept coming and I was quickly trying to remember which color takes out which.

You've managed to make something that is at once easy to understand and play while also being hard to master, I think.

Find, Fling, Repeat by chilljams 2022-04-20T13:26:06Z

It felt like a neat combination of Space War!, Asteroids, and a little bit of Dig Dug. I liked the mechanics of flying around the black hole, as I felt like I could apply my Kerbal Space Program orbital mechanics skills.

The art and animations were cute, the controls were intuitive, and the sound effects were serviceable.

I wondered if the challenge would be greater if the tractor beam had a limited range. I found I could sit in one place at the edge of the screen and take out all of the rocks fairly easily, only moving to collect batteries. On the other hand, that requirement to get batteries meant that even my "optimal" strategy was dangerous. My high score so far was only 22.

Well done!

Baked Snake by ZooHair 2022-04-07T03:20:19Z

I like the taking of the constantly moving snake from Snake and making it not move anywhere, yet still making it hungry. Neat idea!

The spring/whip mechanic was surprisingly expressive. It took a bit of practice to understand how much to move to catch some prey, and I wanted to try a few times before stopping. Having a time meant I also had a score to beat, compelling me to play.

The music and sound effects were fun to listen to. Good work!

Lights Out by Dan Livings 2022-04-20T13:13:15Z

The aesthetics were very well implemented. The color scheme, the minimalism, etc that everyone has been sharing above.

I didn't hear any audio? Unless the silence was purposefully part of the experience?

I found that the rule about "clicking on a white square doing nothing" seemed either untrue or not relevant, as everything fades quickly so there is almost no time in which a square is fully white.

I could see doing something interesting with the scoring based on how many gray tiles are "old" vs "new", so you might encourage players to avoid sitting in one place and clicking the same tile over and over.

It's a good start, and I hope you explore the concept more going forward.

Bombthrow by LakeDev 2022-04-20T14:30:27Z

Wow, I've never seen a completely self-contained Linux-based executable as a game before! Neat!

The game play reminded me of games like 10 Second Ninja, in which there was no way to accomplish things slowly, you had to play well.

The graphics were cute, the sound effects serviceable, and the level design was devious. Level 3 was very hard, and I have tried over and over and over to get oh-so-close to finishing Level 6 but haven't yet. But oh, so close...

Well done!
