I'm not upset, I'm pointing out a clear violation of the compo rules ( http://ludumdare.com/compo/2014/04/25/rules-and-guide-re-written-for-maximum-clarity/ ). My understanding was that LD is a celebration of quick innovation under pressure; that's why there's a theme at all.
I'm not saying you don't deserve to feel good about having implemented someone else's puzzle game in a new format, I'm saying that you could and should have done it elsewhere ... or at the very least, in the jam, where the theme is not mandatory.
All right. I'm not here to get you disqualified or anything, but I didn't think this was a good compo entry and wanted to say something.
I don't feel that a bog-standard port of an internationally acclaimed puzzle game is in the spirit of LD, especially since you don't say anywhere in your game description that you did not invent this puzzle.
That having been said, I'll leave you alone going forward. Good luck to you.
Superb art, fun game! Great use of music, too. Controls were a tiny bit janky and the UI needs work, but all in all a really good piece of work.
Nice audio, backgrounds, mood! Cutely goofy. Not terribly fun but a good start.
I loved the interface and moody feel of the game! I was drawn in immediately and excited to play more. Sadly, the 'plot summary' at the end really disappointed me for two reasons: first, using mental illness as a "YOU are the monster" scapegoat is kind of offensive, done to death, and dull. second? you just spoiled us on your post-comp plot! I would have liked a "to be continued" much better. This could be a really great piece of work, but I hope you bring on a writer or editor!
Very polished! Would have liked checkpoints, but otherwise it was a lot of fun.
Pretty good gameplay! I'm not very good at these, but the acceleration mechanic made for an interesting experience. The music seemed a little sedate, but was pretty good! The graphics not so much, but that's okay.
Tough little puzzle game! Really hard! Not a particularly compelling interpretation of the theme, but good at what it is.
Not sure I understood the ending here -- I feel like it was commentary but it's not clear on what. Anyway, I really loved the graphics and moody feel of the whole thing, even if the awful collision and physics made gameplay unpleasant (and they did). Music didn't stand out but fit the feel of the game.
Very clever idea! I was impressed by the polished look of the levels, and the clean animations. The controls were responsive and felt good, and the gameplay was intuitive but challenging. The audio did grate a little bit, but all in all a very fun play :)
Fantastic graphics, surreal audio, extremely creative! Too short, but I can't be too sad, that's the way of it for compo games. Well done!
Genuinely fun little puzzle game! Well balanced, good programming, nice music! The graphics are lacking, but that doesn't get in the way of this being a good time.
Adorable! I liked the variety of traps and the way they worked. This game isn't a kind I enjoy, but I appreciated the craft level. I loved the weirdly stark, plain-color graphics too.
I really liked the graphics and animations! Plush spooky feel. The controls felt pretty good (though I kept clicking outside the window and losing game focus). Monotonous and unpaced gameplay, though, and the sound quickly got obnoxious and was a poor match to the mood. Still, really cute concept that could be great with a better backbone.
In this game, you beat women into submission so you can rape them, which I definitely could have gone my whole life without ever having to type. I might feel more torn about calling it out, but luckily the gameplay is boring, buggy, and poorly designed. The audio is okay and the graphics are fairly good, but that's all the game has going for it.
Adorable! Wonderful graphics! I especially loved the cargo titles.
Decent mechanics, good animation, but mind-numbingly tedious. I like the bouncing bullet mechanic, though it doesn't exactly contribute to the 'prison break' theme. Say .... why didn't the other cops have guns, anyway?
This is my favorite compo game so far! :D It's a wonderfully creative interpretation of the theme, with extremely clever mechanics and fantastic sound (and voice). The graphics are the right kind of cartoony for the feel. You should be proud of this.
This game's moody retro feel and classic evolving science experiment plot were fun! The hit detection and controls felt very floppy, which detracted from the fun, but it was still cool exploring. The sound was not so good, unfortunately, nor were the graphics -- except for the main character sprite, which looked good. It would have gone over better if all of the sprites and backgrounds had been the same pixel resolution, I think. Still, an excellent freshman effort and I look forward to seeing what you make in the future!
Came for the kraken bad pun, stayed for the kraken good fun! I LOVE IT!! I had a great time playing this game; controlling both tentacles was a great kind of challenging. Can't wait to try it multiplayer with a friend, and would love to see more enemies and more polished pacing in a post-comp release. Still one of the brightest gems of the compo so far.
oh also -- it'd help a lot if the tentacles had colorful 'P1 left' 'P1 right' floaters for the first five seconds of the game. I started out pretty disoriented.
Fun toy! Bit of a feast-or-famine when it comes to difficulty -- I got quickly overwhelmed by the high spawn rate of the villagers, but when I figured out that I could 'claim' the NE docks, things got super easy. Not thrilled with the different pixel resolutions, but otherwise pretty good! :)
adorable XD This may be my favorite take on this year's theme that I've seen yet.
Cute! Lack of feedback made it hard to determine my progress -- who had I hypnotized? How was I doing? Score? But it's not a bad effort at all, and the concept was clever.
Really innovative idea, and pretty well balanced! I feel as though the game moved a little slow -- speeding player and enemies up might not be a bad idea, and the game started to drag near the end (especially as it's a bit too easy right now). Soundtrack really got on my nerves, but the sound effects were good.
Wow, extremely clever! Very cool mechanics, required advance planning and strategies, you even worked in good level design. Really impressive. The controls/physics didn't feel very good, so if there's any way to improve them, that's my only suggestion.
This is probably my favorite 'flappy clone' I've played so far -- very clever take on it! The graphic effects were perfect, too -- very moody.
The sprites were kinda sloppy, but your use of lighting and 3D more than up for it! I would have liked to see more sound, particularly something to confirm that you hit with the laser. Cute and fairly fun! :)
Super impressive graphics and music. Fun game, too! Though I found that the zoomed-in field of view made it difficult to impossible to escape the security guards if they come onto the screen while you are in doppelganger form. Extremely impressive.
Please upload this somewhere public so we can play! :)
I'm gonna be honest with you, stranger: if I wanted somebody to tell me I suck for having empathy and cheer on rapists, I'd go to 8chan. As satire goes, this is as boring as it is ham-handed.
Earlier today I made some minor tweaks that made the game more possible to win! It's still rather difficult, but those of you who couldn't beat it before should try again :)
also, thank you so much for all the comments! I'm very happy that people are enjoying my morbid little campaign game :D
yeah I definitely plan on having the post-comp version be more informative.
peterthehe: I do plan on putting more info on the activity screens, but there are also already instructions next to each activity heading -- is there anything I can do to fill those out or make them clearer/more obvious?
Thank you so much for all the kind words! :D I hope people are enjoying the post-comp version too!
This is an impressive amount of content for a compo game. Well done! I do sort of feel like permadeath isn't great for this kind of RPG, as it's frustrating to get pretty far and then die and have to go back to fighting sturdy plants. Still and all, very fun.
