Has that classic Tim Beaudet "One More Time" feel to it. I'm terrible at it, but it's still fun.

This about sums up my skill level:

terrible_brakes_1.png

Audio is fun. Music is a bit loud, something that seems to usually plague Unity WebGL builds in my experience.

Looking forward to seeing a screenshot of the finish, because that is the only way I'll see it!

After 10 "One more times" when I should be sleeping ... I managed this: 20220404_screenshot_002.png

Game is very fun and has that addictive quality to it. I was able to pull this off on my first attempt using a controller after a decent amount of time on keyboard first... don't know if that means anything lol couldn't quite slow down after that jump though 😁

Fun entry! Made it to zone 6 after many attempts. Maybe some damping on the wheel turning so you could feather it for keyboard users would be nice (maybe it has that but it's not visual, not sure).

2022-04-05 07:27

I inevitable stopped and crashed for hours, and this is the best 'delay' I’ve got (so far). soap.png

I like the handle of the car (played on keyboard). The combination between 'slippery' road and the instant turning makes the car fun to drift, responsive and hard (enough) to align for jumps. The music theme fits the game, but need more work. Sounds effects are fun, but quite random, and some are missing (hitting a wall, drifting..). The environment is quite empty, and the background was mostly gray, however it wasn't as annoying as I expected since my main focus was on the track.

Overall it was a fun and engaging game, with a good track design. The biggest thing that made me keep trying to get a better score was the community, and if this product will become commercial, I hope you'll find a way to keep this feeling.

(With some small changes on music and skybox your game could be a challenging "$1 game", about which people will talk)

Neat game. Loved the "engine sounds" Graphics reminiscent of the old _Stunt Car Racer_ game, which tickled the nostalgia bone.

Would've been nice to get some instructions. A bit of trial and error to find the turn controls, and I don't think I ever found an accelerator (playing using keyboard only).

Well done!

I wanted to post a screenshot of me being in zone 10+ but I can't seem to manage

Very nice work Tim, I agree with the person above who said it's a typical "one more try" kind of game. Also love the voice work by @tsjost, when he goes "VROOM" I feel like getting out of the car and try pushing!

Seriously, a one-use powerup that enables a manual push would have been a good idea for players of my skill level. Also, a hiscore table would have been nice. And the game could use more environmental details, sure, but what's there is pretty. I love the "past attempt" ghost feature! It would probably help to have some indicator that shows whether you can even make it over the next bump with the speed you got, but then again that would take away the instances where I scream at the screen to make it creep forward just one more meter

adroitconceptions 2022-04-05 11:53

- music loop is really short, could use some length or ability to turn it down. - controller doesn't appear to work (at least on web build) - proportional steering would be nice - could use some graphics/environment beyond the track - car model looks good - track models look good - game play difficulty curve probably a bit to hard for a jam game, erroring on the easy side tends to work better (or at least starting on the easier side)

brads-space 2022-04-05 12:25

Pretty addictive game, very difficult without a controller. Hard to even get over the 2nd bump

henrik-ganard 2022-04-05 12:57

Oh no. Not one of these games. Now I will get nothing done for work in ages. I just love physics-game and that you added a ghost made it so mouch more replayable. I just can´t stop polishing my section times =) Great work. Thanks for making this game. My only negative feedback is that section 2 is to har with the low speeds in the beginning of the race. I loved your game.

reronin 2022-04-05 13:11

Laughed my socks off with the sound effects. The second bump ended sooo many of my runs tho.

2022-04-05 13:43

This is a lot of fun to play. It look easy but takes a bit of skill.

2022-04-05 17:59

Further progress! I can't stop!@#

It took me many attempts to get to Zone 2, but I finally did it and ended up driving backwards in Zone 3 somehow.

I found myself trying over and over, so it was very compelling game play even though I generally don't seek out racing games. I stopped in Zone 5 but I don't know if it was a legit Zone 5 or if I happened to have fallen off the track into Zone 5. And knowing that people made it 4x as far makes me want to keep trying.

And the "vroom vroom" sound effects were pretty funny. The music was rocking.

2022-04-05 20:11

I DID IT! I was able to finish after ~100 tries.

The controls are really easy (you can either press :arrow_left: or :arrow_right:), but being actually successful is very very hard. You have to master how not to drift (or you will not have speed to overcome some obstacles) and at the same time you have to be really really good at drifting (you need to lose a lot of speed very fast in some places).

The game is super addicting. Every time you fail you will be able to pinpoint the exact moment where you screwed up and you will want to play another run to try and fix it, just to fail again and again and again.

It has its quirks (for example, I got stuck in one of the loops for absolutely no reason), which are compensated by the fact that sometimes the car will bounce off the ground, do a somersault and land with the right speed to clear the next curve (which otherwise you would have failed).

I really enjoyed the simple aesthetics and the funny engine noises. Given the chance, I would replace the skybox with something more visually appealing. Regarding the checkpoints, I would like if they were actually visible while driving and that the checkpoint timer included a delta time compared with the best run.

When winning the game, the checkpoint timer should indicate that the game actually finished and that I won. I stared at it for a couple of seconds wondering if I had been victorious or not.

Great job overall!

Great entry. Don't really like the uphills. Would be nice to be able to speed up.

pkenney 2022-04-06 03:07

NOT AGAIN -- LET'S GO!

A lot comes together here to make this work so well. The cheerful metal backing track might be the secret workhorse here, along with the sound effects, that "unnnnghUH" reflects so well how I sometimes feel. Because let's be honest - the game warns you about the lack of brakes but we all know it's really the lack of the gas pedal that gets you the worst!

A great mix here of having to streamline your driving, you are tested both to preserve speed and to safely shed it. I can't tell whether I love or HATE that hill at around 10 seconds. I failed so many times on it, but it also taught me so much. If you made a deliberate design decision to place that nasty "don't skid or else" hill so early to allow the learning to avoid repetitious easy driving, then it was a stroke of genius. Because as much as I HATED that hill, it would have been a lot, LOT worse if each harsh lesson involved 40 seconds of repeated driving rather than 10.

I was into this enough that I pulled out my controller and upgraded from the browser to a proper download, and that's not something I can remember doing before in LD. And I've done 21 of these.

This game hits a really strong "one more try" feel, as everyone above mentioned already. I did eventually get disheartened by the brutal feeling of going up a hill and stalling out. Legit challenge, but so ... well son, I'm not mad I'm just disappointed.

So the math tells me that my best was 1:15 at Zone 5.

But my heart tells me this was my best run here:

BackwardsRacing.png

Such a great entry, well done.

2022-04-06 10:19

One of the most generic games I've played in this jam. My review would just be "meh".

zimny11 2022-04-06 17:28

Really cool. The first big hill is just brutal. Its graphics are simple but fit nicely together. The voice acting is top-notch. It was a lot of fun to play. *Vroom Vroom*

renge 2022-04-06 17:31

I made it to zone 9 and failed at the looping! Might give it another shot later. The gameplay is super addictive. Love it!

tentaclemax 2022-04-06 17:51

Vroom-vroom! Really good game! A lot of fun, and that sounds are amazing! Vroooom!

mechanicallife 2022-04-06 18:44

Well done to the team! love that the levels are designed so you basically can't pass the speed checks without running clean racing lines! some good level design that. Kept losing to the same zone, would have loved to be able to replay only some parts of the level instead of starting over from the start. I've played a bit to much so have to give it up at this point

okamit 2022-04-06 19:14

Nice game, the sound effects were fun! Simple, hard to master, but effective.

theslate 2022-04-06 20:15

Vroom-vroom! I couldn't make it to area 2 though. Good job!

2022-04-06 22:35

Success! I wish I recorded the last part of this run lol it was crazy going down the last hill to the finish; some how I spun out going down and ended up going backwards then someone managed to twist myself back forward before making it to the bottom and finishing.

honest-dan 2022-04-07 21:36

Congrats Tim, for making a driving game that made me think differently about how to control my car than any other driving game has! I am not familiar with racing, but it made you really think about momentum. I was pretty bad at it, but once I got a controller I got a bit less bad. Seems you made a lot of fun track content but I wasn't good enough to reach it! Enjoyed my time with it.

2022-04-08 09:47

Finally! soap5f.png

Really addictive game.

(When I saw the final part for the first time (obviously I died) I was thinking: This is impossible, I want to try it again!)

xeke-death 2022-04-08 12:01

I ended up facing backwards and upside down in zone 3. My best was zone 6 I think. I did better with a keyboard than controller. Music rocks, sound effects are top notch. The ghost car was a great addition. The instant back-to-action is a real productivity killer. It's like I never stopped at all! Just kept on rolling.

lex 2022-04-08 12:34

The game is hella fun, but I think the ability to retry from the last checkpoint would be a huge accessibility improvement!

timbeaudet 2022-04-08 15:29

I agree with the comments of last checkpoint respawning; but that went against the whole point of the theme to delay the inevitable crash/stop. I would say the zone 5 checkpoint is harder than I would like it to be. I balanced it so I could usually make it over (95% of the time) but I was taking optimized racing lines and that is tricky for players not deeply into racing games.

tigerj 2022-04-08 18:14

I love this game and I will get to the bottom Saturday. Crazy awesome! highlight: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1449896005?t=02h22m08s

I don't really have anything to critique as it is a great game.

dafluffypotato 2022-04-11 06:18

This is the first game I've played so far, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being my favorite from the jam. I've been playing it for over half an hour and I'm slowly making progress. I got to about 1:32 on zone 7 (that big jump). I was playing on my keyboard since I don't have my controller with me at the moment, but I can imagine the analog input would be a lot easier than feathering arrow keys. I'll have to try again when I get access to my controller again.

Aside from the concept and the gameplay, the other aspects are a bit lacking (although it really wasn't much of a detriment to my enjoyment). The game could use more sound effects such as a ding when you complete a zone or sounds for drifting and hitting walls. In terms of visuals, some FOV changes and light screenshaking may have been some easy changes that would've contributed (although I'm not an expert in racing games). The color palette could have used some improvement and it would've been nice if the skybox were swapped with something that wasn't gray on the bottom half.

Oh, also, I could see this making a great VR game for people who don't easily get motion sickness.

lakea 2022-04-13 13:49

Another amazing game from TB, this has to be my favorite LD50 game yet.

wendel-scardua 2022-04-14 01:01

I should try playing this with a controller later, this was my best score with a keyboard (zone 5):

terrible-brakes.png

One thing I felt missing here is that this screen only shows the last score - I'd like to see the best score as well. But even without that it was really fun, and the fast retry made it really addictive :)

porcus-pie 2022-04-18 09:41

This was really neat, I will definitely be coming back to this once I have access to a controller. It's such a simple concept, but really engaging and I can tell it has a really high skill ceiling. Finding the right line to hit all the corners was enjoyable, and I was surprised how often I would find myself following what I thought was the natural racing line, only to question it later on. I was also pleasantly surprised with how long the game was; I wasn't able to get the entire way down on keyboard but looking forward to getting there on controller. The only thing the game was lacking to me was more feedback from the car, I would have loved some HUD with speed, or distance or something to add just that little extra incentive and value. Overall though this was so simple but so much fun, and really exciting to replay.
