Hail Of Bombs by tinyworlds 2013-08-26T12:13:00
That sure is a hail of bombs alright. Nicely executed for such a quickly developed game, works really well.

That sure is a hail of bombs alright. Nicely executed for such a quickly developed game, works really well.
Very clever implementation of the theme, makes for an original, interesting game. You should definitely do more with this one.
Nice job, i really like the big, chunky character graphics.
This is great, superbly executed and with a wicked dark sense of humour to it. Great work.
Jaw-dropping quality AND quantity of artwork in this one for a 72-hour job, and a solid game to go with it. Nicely done.
Really like the sound design on this one. Really nicely put together all round, great little game.
For a 15 hour job this is a really slick piece of work. Some clever mechanics and really nicely implemented to go with it. Excellent job.
This is fantastic. Beautiful visuals and a really unique feel to it, I really enjoyed this one. Masterful work.
This is really good. I love the little aging animation in particular, it's a cute touch. There are a few "ten-second lifespan" games out there, but this is a more interesting use of that mechanic than most. Nice work!
This one's a lot of fun, I really like the minimalist monochrome style you've got going on with this as well. It's not hard to imagine it as some rediscovered old classic handheld game or something. Simply a great little piece of work.
Really like the look of this one, the Gameboy-inspired style works well with the concept. Holy moly it's hard though. Really fun game all the same, nicely done!
Staggering work considering it was made in five hours. Looks great and controls really well, with a nice degree of polish to everything involved.
Would like to see where you could take this given a little more time, some interesting stuff going on there.
It could definitely use a little more in the way of feedback and instruction, especially at the start, but you've definitely got the start of something interesting here. Nicely done!
Cool concept, the gameplay's a little heavy on trial-and-error for my tastes but it works well given the theme. Quite an achievement for 48 hours' work.
Genuinely amazing graphics on this one, looks really lush and polished. Quite an interesting concept too. The controls were a little fiddly, but it didn't take too long to get my bearings. Definitely a creative use of the theme and a quality game all round.
Woah, wasn't expecting that to be as good as it was. Really liked the concept and you executed it well, even enjoyed the silly asides about the music. Nice!
This is a great little game. I really like the chunky graphics and general lo-fi style of the whole thing. Th controls are nice and tight and it feels polished all round, everything feels like it fits together perfectly. Excellent work.
I really love this game, everything about it just wonderful.
Really liked this one. Once it opened up and I saw what it was doing it really put a smile on my face. Great soundtrack too. Recommended!
Really like the atmosphere on this one. Nice soundtrack work too. I was a bit unsure about the fairly restrictive way your moves "unlock", but it didn't take long to get used to it. Nicely done!
This is a fun game, gives me flashbacks to fun joystick-breaking times with Daley Thompson's Decathlon on the c64. It would've been cool to have a "false start" mechanic for hitting the keys before the starter pistol fires, but otherwise it's all good :)
Really creative design with a cute style to it, I liked this one a lot.
Very cool piece of work, and an awful lot of game there for a 48 hour entry. Love the visual style, it looks and feels nicely polished all round. Just wish there was a little audio to go with it.
Fun game with a few really nice touches. I had some occasional problems where zombies just wouldn't show up at all for the entire ten seconds, but most of the time I had fun with it. Good job!
This is fantastic, the constant switching between gameplay styles livens things up no end. Not to mention that it looks and sounds amazing. A great entry.
Really nicely done, very polished piece of work. Excellent stuff.
Really fun game, but those other guys weren't kidding about the difficulty curve :p
Really love the style you've got going here, that's quite a piece of work. Funny, bizarre, slightly creepy and all that good stuff. Love it.
Definitely a fresh take on the theme, I really enjoyed this one.
Quite a simple setup, but executed nicely. Felt quite slick to play, more so than most gamemaker shooters. Nicely done!
Wow, this looks and sounds fantastic. Simple mechanics but very nicely executed.
Short and sweet, just the way I like 'em. Cute graphics and the camera fights back just enough that the gameplay isn't too trivial. I like it.
10.003! I really loved this one, some great writing, an adorable style and a really fun interpretation of the theme. Fantastic.
This is fantastic. A really interesting use of the theme in using the hand of the clock as the thing that literally reshapes the world, and some sexy minimalist design going on with both the visuals and audio. One of the best I've played so far.
Sometimes the simplest ideas can be the best ones, and I think this is one of those times. Really fun game with a wicked sense of humour, kept me playing a lot longer than I thought it would. Great job!
Probably my absolute favourite interpretation of the theme, and a fantastic game to go with it. This is just great.
It seems to be a/f nor a/d for steering, at least for me anyway. Other than that, it's a smooth little racer that works well.
Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb :p
Really enjoyed this one, had a lot of fun with it. Plays pretty slick, looks good, great music, quality all round.
Definitely one of the prettiest games I've seen this LD - the style is just fantastic and fits perfectly with the theme you went with. Very cool game.
Really interesting game with great graphics and some nice design all round, but I'm having serious trouble with the controls. I can't get the arrows to switch direction in the queue about 90% of the time. Even clicking all over them, they'll rarely change direction at all. I've tried every way I can think of and I just can't get the controls to play along. Bar that one issue, the game looks great though.
This one has the potential to be a lot of fun, looking forward to the updates!
Cool game. I like the idea of mentally having to keep track of your remaining time. Just a shame you couldn't get more of the planned features implemented in time, maybe you can expand it a little in future. Good job!
Fantastic stuff, a really cute and charming style coupled with some simple mechanics that work well. Love it.
This is great, such a distinctive, unusual take on the theme.
Man, that central mechanic is pure evil, but I like it :). Clever use of the theme, but jeez Louise it's hard.
I enjoyed this one quite a lot. A little more variety in your choices would've been nice, but there's already quite a bit there for a 48 hour project. I particularly liked the use of pixel-art mannequins for the character graphics, gives the whole thing a nice touch of charm. Nice work!
Looks and sounds great, but it's really hard to get anywhere.
Great concept, really nicely executed. Certainly demands some quick thinking but I guess that fits with the theme :p. Great work!
Cool, I always enjoy these thrust-style games.
This is definitely something special. Beautiful graphics and atmosphere, simple mechanics nicely executed, and all finished off with an impressive degree of polish. Loved it.
Quite a cool game, the style you went with suited it really well. It's just a shame there wasn't time to make cutscenes for any of the outcomes, that would've set it off really nicely. Good work all the same.
There's a fantastic sense of atmosphere to this one, really enjoyed it.
I'd really like to see where you could take this one with a little more work, very interesting game.
Those are either some small feet or some creepy-big bugs :p. Does exactly what it says on the box, this one, and does it pretty well.
Oh man, this is great! I love the look of everything, the over-the-shoulder style and especially the bizarre suda51-style voice performances. Please do more with this!
Some nice graphical work in there and an interesting use of the theme. Could use a little more of a steadily rising challenge though.
This is absolutely fantastic. Looks and sounds gorgeous and plays really well with it. Exceptional work.
And thanks for the lower resolution version, I couldn't comfortably play it before.
This has probably the best writing of anything I've played so far, some cracking dialogue in there. It's got a really great style to it as well. The only complaint I'd have is that it gets a little tricky a little quickly, but otherwise it's all good. Excellent entry.
This is a bit great, for someone who claims not to be much of an artist it's got a really cool look to it. The puzzles are pretty fun as well (as far as I got at least, as I suck at these games). Nicely done!
So, so pretty, and a fun game to go with it. For your first jam this is really great work.
What else is there to say? Charming, super-polished, fantastic fun.
Haha, love it. Back of the net!
Yeah, a little sound fx and extra feedback would add a lot. Not bad anyway.
That pixel art is sexy as hell. Getting this together in such a short space of time was an incredible achievement, excellent work there.
Nicely done game, implemented well and quite fun to play. Good job!
Really creative interpretation of the theme, I had a lot of fun with this one. I'd really like to see where you could go with this given a little more time, there's the start of a really cool, interesting game there.
Cute game, plays well and I love the chunky graphical style mixed with those silent-film style interludes. Good work!
Cool concept, I really like the basic idea behind the gameplay. It could use a little more work, but I'd really like to see what you could do with it given a little more time.
This one's a lot of fun. I had a similar idea myself, but ruled it out as something I couldn't get done inside the timeframe. Nice work proving me wrong :). I liked the randomized elements and the breakneck pace of it all, nicely done.
Fun game with a really pretty, clean style to it. I enjoyed this one.
Looks fantastic and quite a lot of fun to play. I always have a little trouble playing twin-stick games on the keys but it worked pretty well here. Good stuff!
I liked this one quite a lot. Viciously hard though. Personally I liked the minimalist design and thought the effect worked well.
Super-cute game with a nice degree of polish, looks and plays great. The three-character setup reminds me a little of The Lost Vikings, but that's never a bad thing :). Excellent little puzzle platformer.
Good job, not bad at all. I'd agree that the lose screen could be a little more descriptive though.
Man, I love Kung-Fu Master. Thanks for the great little homage :)
Quite an unusual mix of genres, but it makes for a really fun game the way it keeps switching pace between levels. Nicely done!
Holy Moly, this is a gorgeous-looking game. Not just nicely done, but with a real distinctive hand-illustrated style to it. Everything about this one is pure quality.
interesting interpretation of the theme, and it sets quite a nice atmosphere. This is great stuff for a first game.
This was quite a bit better than expected, and made for an engaging, creative game. Nicely done there : )
Really interesting design in this one, definitely a little different from the norm. Visuals are clear and kinda stylish too. Definitely one I'd like to see you follow up on sometime down the line.
Cool game with a really nice visual style to it, and a lot of fun to play. Really like the teensy little sprites :)
Really cool use of the theme, the whole stasis mechanic feels really fresh and works well to create tension while at the same time giving the player room to think tactically about their next move. Clever stuff! Looks great, controls take a little getting used to but don't take long to start making sense. This is a quality piece of work.
Really silly but really nicely executed all the game, makes for a surprisingly fun and addictive game. Some sound effects and music would cap the whole thing off perfectly.
Charming little platformer with a cute, likeable style. I'm another one who prefers space to jump, but I still got along well with this one all the game. Enjoyed the very silly sound fx work too :)
This is great stuff. An interesting mechanic executed with a lot of skill and polish. It takes a little while to get your head around the basic rules and controls of the game, but it's worth the effort for sure. nicely done!
Would deifnitely like to see where you go with this one. That's a great start you've made there.
Cool game, really enjoyed it. Regarding the file size, uncompressed audio files are usually the culprit for that sort of thing. Hope you can get it sorted out, this one deserves to have more people check it out :)
Dear god those zombies are fast. Neat game.
Cool stuff. The little sphere guys remind me a bit of the characters from Ecstatica. Congrats on making it through your first LD btw!
Enjoyed this one, the upgrade system adds a lot to it. As a few folks have mentioned it could use a little more balancing, but that's to be expected for a 48-hour game. Still a nice piece of work.
I enjoy a good puzzle game, and this is a fun one for sure. Quite tricky but well-executed all the same. Nice job!
Cool concept, nicely executed with it.
Cool game. One issue I had is that it's not very clear that you need to click on the actual "click to play" text on the title screen, I was clicking all over the place and wondering why it wasn't starting. Might be a good idea to have that as a button to help it read a little better.
Otherwise a good game with some nice graphics work.
Nicely done!
Good to see another dueling game in the running, and one that uses seconds in their traditional role rather than fudging things so they have to duel instead. Cool stuff.
One suggestion I'd offer is to give a little more visual feedback on the options you're selecting in conversations, it was a little hard to tell if what I'd chosen had been selected or not. Otherwise it was a unique experience and I enjoyed it.
Congrats on your first game!
This is great, I really like the whole minimalist style you've got going on with this one. Quite the challenge too.
Some really clever stuff going on with the mechanics here, I enjoyed that a lot. A great game that deserves to do well.
This is great, I really like the central mechanic at play here, makes for a fast, fun, chaotic kinda game. Great stuff.
Excellent work. The only real complaint I'd have is that the jumps tended a little too much towards the pixel-perfect side for my tastes, but otherwise it's hard to fault.
This is a great little game. Love the crisp visual style and the simple but maddening mechanic. Surprisingly fun.
This is good stuff, like a cross between Ghouls N Ghosts and the Monster World series. The only real complaint would be that the view's so close in it makes it really hard to spot any trouble coming your way, and with a game this hard it makes things very difficult indeed. Good stuff all the same.
Cool game, it's got a nice look to it and plays really well. Gets pretty tricky pretty quickly for me though.
@rasmusrn the shots have a random chance to scatter depending on how long you've waited to "steady" your aim (you can tell by the size/colour of the crosshair, big/red=huge scatter, medium/yellow = moderate, small/green=on target). Enemies have a similar random scatter, but based on their skill level, getting more accurate and faster with each round.
Waiting longer will give you a much more accurate shot but at the risk of being shot yourself. Shooting earlier is much more random, but can sometimes "panic" your opponent into completely messing up their shot (especially at lower levels).
@Impmaster: once you click on the icon to start the duel, you need to keep your cursor inside that area until your character makes their ten paces until you can legally fire. You can tell when it's time as a tone will sound and the cursor changes.
As for meeting the theme, the characters themselves are the theme, as there's ten of them and they're all "seconds", duellists appointed to stand in for their respective challengers. It's an old duelling term.
@Morgawr: I didn't have the time to test Firefox sadly, sound is tested working on Chrome though. Might be worth trying the GameJolt version in case it's an issue with my server. Native linux support will hopefully be coming for a later version.
@Dooleus: I was thinking of some music stings along those lines, but ran out of time to do anything decent. I'm fairly musically inclined but would be interested in hearing your take on it.
@theholychicken: it's not copying anything that I'm aware of (there may well be something similar I've missed, or something I've played in the past that I've since forgotten about, but I think it's fairly original).
I'm taking on board the criticism here for the next release version. It's too easy to cheese the duels at the moment, so I'll definitely be adjusting that a bit. Players can't currently misfire, but I think I'll re-jig that so they have a moderate chance to with a red crosshair, diminishing as the crosshair narrows. Return fire needs to be a bit more random as well.
Planned additions include a betting system and "skill shots". With the betting system, you can pay to have enemies miss their shot, or take a bribe to throw matches yourself. You'll also be able to wager money on the outcome of each round. Skill shots will let you earn a 2x cash bonus for making a specific non-lethal shot on your opponent (randomized each round), at the risk of leaving your duellist open to return fire. I want to try and encourage a bit more strategy in the gameplay rather than just aiming "centre mass" and hoping for the best.
The new main gameplay mode will probably be an endless duel mode with character permadeath, where the objective is to reach a set cash target with at least one character left standing, still using a starting team of five.
Other features possible down the line include a light upgrade/levelling system, a roster of duellists to hire from and persistent injuries from non-lethal wounds that can heal with cash or time.
@Zero0Kelvin it seems to have trouble with firefox especially, Chrome should work okay (or the native windows version). I'll try and get that fixed for the next version. It gets a little trickier as it goes on, enemies draw a little faster, miss their shots a lot less often and can't be panicked into firing early as easily. It's a fairly steady increase, but I suppose even at level 5 it's still pretty easy.
The Firefox audio problem seems to be coming from GM's new audio system requiring a WebAudio-capable browser to work correctly. I'm trying to hack something together using the legacy audio system but it's not too pretty so far. For the moment your best best is trying it in chrome or downloading the native windows version (it's a vanilla zip, no installers or anything). Apologies to anyone having trouble.
@lcarpentier: Wow, that's really cool, thanks for the heads up! I notice they mentioned the difficulty again, ah well.
The next version should be designed to give quite a bit more challenge. Not faster necessarily, but there should be a better balance of risk/reward with the new scoring systems and a longer-form game where permadeath of a team member is a much bigger deal.
With the all the attention this has been getting I've decided to go ahead and develop this one as far as I can take it and see how it goes. There should be a new non-comp version within the next few days with a lot more game to it.
Thanks again for all the feedback everyone, I'll be sure to get to your games soon too (for anyone I haven't got to yet) :)
Next version will be live this Sunday with a bunch of new stuff, you can find details and a comparison screen of the old and new versions at http://farfromsleep.com/?p=1238
@hbocao there's an android version coming :). iOS maybe later in the month.
@ratking the point of keeping your cursor in the '!' icon is to simulate not being able to see your opponent, to prevent you lining up the shot in advance before your character turns to fire (this is also why the icon's in a neutral position in the centre of the screen). The 'load' icon randomly appears either above or below the cursor to introduce an element of controlled chaos that can potentially throw you off instead of it being an exactly repeatable process.
The cursor narrowing and becoming more accurate as you wait is to introduce an element of gambling into the mix. You can shoot first and risk misfiring or your shot going wide, or hold your fire as long as you can for a more certain shot. The whole design is built around the idea of taking an educated risk at the right time, and it's something later versions of the game will build on even more.
This was great, I really loved it.
Nicely done collect-'em-up with a really striking visual style and ambient soundtrack. A little finessing on the controls and it'd be really excellent.
I think I love this a little. Surprisingly fun, the music adds a lot.
A sniper-style game works well with the theme, and I like the cute, angry lookin' guys for targets. It's a bit of a shame you didn't have time to cook up some death animations (it feels a little abrupt when the mission ends) but still a fun game. Look forward to the expanded version!
This is great. Everything feels complete and really nicely executed, cool style to it too. I love that static effect when the scene changes, the audio and visual elements are perfect. Awesome job.
Cool concept, nicely executed. A bit on the tough side for me though.
Cool concept. A little more visual feedback would be nice, but I like what you're going for.
Fun, polished little multiplayer game, very nicely done.
Great job on the graphics with this one, really slick looking game.
Well, that raised the biggest laugh of the comp so far for me. Nice one.
Great stuff, there's a whole lot of game here for a weekend's work. Nicely done guys.
Gotta love that music. Great looking game with a nice distinctive style to it, awesome work for your first Ludum Dare.
This one had me stumped, but in a good way. Clever use of the theme, gorgeous visual design work a whole lot to like.
Cute game. I had a few issues with this one before I could get playing: playing without skipping the intro loaded the first room without the player in it, but skipping the intro it worked fine. Good stuff besides that.
Really impressive stuff for 24 hours' work. Nicely done!
Pretty cool game with a nice graphical style to it. Seems to hang on me at game over though. Everything else looks like it works fine.
You weren't kidding about the atmospheric part. Really like the feel of this one, it's got a really great, weighty animation style to it and a fantastic soundtrack. Very stylish stuff.
Great style to this and really fun to play. Love the little notes about your fate during game overs.
Really enjoyed this one. I'll save myself yet!
Nicely done! An interesting use of the ten second mechanic, for sure. Is there any way to skip the intro?
This is great! Really distinctive art style, cute with just a slight edge of creepy to it, set off nicely by the sound design. Sets a really nice atmosphere for a simple but compelling central mechanic. Awesome stuff.
Really fun game with a nice amount of variety to it, feels a lot more finished than most of the entries I've played. Great stuff!
Congrats on your first game! Not bad for 4 hours' work.
Really addictive little game. Hard to make any progress but it's fun letting the bodies pile up regardless. Great job.
Enjoyed this one. The weapon mechanic works well and most importantly the weapons themselves have a nice feel to them. The enemies could have maybe used a little more work but that's deadlines for ya I suppose. Good job!
Really like the audio work on this one, gives it all a nice, trippy feel. There might not be a lot of game there, but it's definitely the start of something interesting.
Nicely put together, quality little rescue game. Was a little confused as to which objectives were which to begin with, but it all made sense soon enough. Good stuff.
Really nicely designed and polished, this one. The controls feel just right, which makes playing through it a real pleasure. Excellent stuff.
Really polished platform action with a cute minimal style. I was another one who found the wall jumps a little tricky, I think using space or a separate key to jump would've helped a lot, up to jump always seems to throw people. Aside from that it's all good, I really enjoyed it.
Took a little while to get my head around exactly what I was doing, but it's a cool little mini-rpg with some really charming character graphics. The pace makes it feel a little relentless, but that's par for the course with 10 second games. Good stuff.
The screenshots don't really do this one justice, it's a slick little card puzzler with a really interesting, imaginative design. Some of the goals are quite tricky, but it certainly kept me hooked.
Nicely polished, this one, really like the audio especially. On the negative side I've had a few goes and it's still absolutely kicking my ass :p. Still, I can hardly blame it for that. Nice work!
Great atmosphere to this one, it was surprisingly effective in what it set out to do. Definitely do more with this one if you can, I'd like to see where you could take it with a little more time. Nice work!
Cute game, I liked the unusual selection of characters especially.
This is great stuff, a lot of fun to play. The difficulty didn't get me so much as up to jump did, that always kills me in fast-action platformers. Looks and sounds fantastic, feels really polished all round with some awesome (if a little overwhelming) particle effects. Nice one!
Really liking the graphical work on this one. Indeed it's a slick job all round. Looks and sounds great and plays nicely with it. Very cool.
Very well made, but extremely difficult, even when you've got a decent idea what's going on. There's lots to like about it though, the design and mechanics work well and it's all got a nice degree of polish to it. Cool stuff.
This is great! Especially like the visual design and sheer level of polish here. Fun to play and a great concept.
Looks great and plays well with it. Really dig the cutesy tiny sprites and there's quite a lot of game there for 48 hours' work. Nicely done.
Really cool game, I like the nice, clean graphical style especially. Despite the few bugs you mentioned it all feels very polished and makes for an enjoyable little shooter.
Really like this one. It's got a very silly sense of humour and a fun "typing of the dead"-style sales mechanic that really sets it apart. Looks and sounds the part too. It's a little on the tough side, but it's so much fun I didn't really mind.
Creative, original and pretty damn trippy. Love it.
Nicely done, I enjoyed the satirical edge and gameplay-wise it's a lot better balanced than these games tend to be. Good job!
Great sense of atmosphere, it looks and sounds amazing. Just a really polished piece of work all over. This is great stuff.
