Out of the 20 or so games I've played so far for this LD, this is my favorite. The concept of making a game of being distracted at work is genius - and amazingly the game itself is simple, fun and extremely attractive.
Great game design. In order to score points you sometimes have to make risky jumps. Also the double jump mechanic discourages button mashing. Very challenging and fun.
Cool concept.
Amazing work, I'll never figure out how people do so much work in 48 hours. The only part I didn't like was the driving because it seemed like more speed actually made things harder instead of easier.
Excellent music and graphics!
Thanks for the feedback everyone, this is what LD is all about! I couldn't replicate the "jump not always registering" on my machine so I googled it and it turns out combinations of keys like "UP ARROW + LEFT ARROW + SPACE" can cause an issue called "Key Ghosting" that happens with many non-gaming keyboards. To test this I dragged out an old Dell keyboard and suddenly had a hard time doing double jump into a directional air dash. Too bad - I will have to learn more about this and maybe give alternate control schemes in the future.
And I DID know about sometimes getting stuck in the ground as well as weird activity when jumping around block tiles. I think I know how to fix them now but I did not have enough time in the competition.
Thanks again everyone, I'm sure this info will make my next game much better!
Great concept and coding it in NES assembly is an incredible feat. Only issue I had with the game is that the size of the jumps seemed random and things moved too quickly and finicky.
This is really amazing for something done in HTML/CSS/JavaScript.
Great game, pretty challenging for how simple it is. I loved all the different things that could happen depending on where the bullets went. Great job and it looks like you are going for an all-time high in the Coolness rating!
Great game, fun and cute with solid responsive controls. The web version played fine for me. Only wish it was a little bit longer and more challenging.
I really liked this game! When I replayed levels I liked how differently things could play out. For a simple concept with easy controls this is a lot of fun. I definitely would have played through a lot more levels if they existed. The shortness is my only complaint.
Great use of the theme!
Awesome art. Everything reminded me of Wonderboy in Monsterland, which is always a good thing!
Would have been cool if the asteroids did damage to the enemy.
Five stars for the graphics for sure! Wasn't so sure how this related to the theme though.
Great concept executed very well!
Great graphics obviously, I'm just not sure this is a game.
Great idea and a fun game!
Interesting game, a bit of a mindfuck. Difficulty seemed to shoot up too much for the third stage.
Excellent graphics and sound!
Amazing game! One of the best LD games I've ever played!
Great game! Seemingly simple but very challenging to keep going for a long time.
Good point, I did not consider non-qwerty. I will definitely add arrow key support to the post-comp version.
Yes, the source is all on my github under the OverheadRacer.gmx file. You don't need GameMaker to read it but it will help. I'm pretty sure the free version should compile and run this game fine and make it easy to view all the objects.
Just FYI I will make a blog post in the future addressing the physics, which are really simple but also quite flexible.
This is a fun, fast-paced game with an interesting take on the theme. You are an excellent musician to create such professional-sounding music in just two days! This game definitely deserves five stars for Audio.
Great graphics and good concept. The lack of cooldown on getting hurt lead to some cheap deaths though.
