ASCIIvader III by CataclysmicKnight 2013-04-30T05:10:00
You did a great job with the ASCII art and the game itself is very fun! I can tell I've played too much Binding of Isaac when my immediate thought was the Envy boss :p

Nice and simple, but very effective. Great work :)
Really really cool. One of my favourite games I played here so far :)
Really really cool! This is a pretty great interpretation of the theme :)
Just a heads up that Bit.ly is giving a warning when clicking so you may want to change your URL so we can play :) Good work on finishing your first LD though!
This is very very well done. Audio and graphics are superb, and I really like the gameplay too. Great job :)
The graphics are quite nice :) I like the gameplay too, but I think a cursor graphic for the fan may have helped quite a bit with directing the balloon.
I really like the art style and the way the player forms a more complex shape as you move. Would love to see something like that in a fully fleshed out game!
Found it difficult to visualise the 3D space, but rotating the cube a whole bunch was pretty fun :P Very nice presentation, if it was a bit easier to line up to dots I think this would be pretty fun.
Yes there is a last boss and an ending, however it's a bit difficult. The end boss is definitely worth it though. Thank you all for the lovely comments :)
The title is a reference to: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405159/?ref_=sr_2 :)
Also re: Minimalism -
The thing is this was my very first Ludum Dare, and as an artist I was really kinda disappointed that minimalism was put out to be my first theme to tackle. I felt it would be a waste of my ability if I went the route of squares and simple shapes, so we tried to go a different route so that I could still have fun creating something. George is a Flash programmer, so we couldn't do something with 3D space, it had to be 2D and striking.
Personally I think the gameplay mechanics are still quite minimal, basically attacking and customising is carried out via one click, and the game takes place in one area. Perhaps the window dressing of the game makes it appear a lot more complex than it is? In reality it was a very quick project and we finished quite ahead of schedule :)
hahahhhaha <3 ^^^
Cool concept! And well done on your first LD and first game :D
This is absolutely fantastic, great work! Zip is such a great little character for having so few pixels :3
Got an error when downloading packages sadly, looks like it would be pretty awesome to play too.
This is rad, I love the audio and it controls nicely. Great puzzle design too :)
Super cool! Had to read the comments to figure out how annihilating worked, but after that it was very fun :)
I can't tell if it works or not :/ There was nothing to attack and having block as RMB was annoying when it'd bring up the Unity menu each time.
I actually really like this, in terms of an art game. I think it would perhaps be more moody if set on an industrial freeway with the potential for traffic jams so that you can reflect on poor decisions :P I think the ramps maybe take away from the experience a little, but overall, great effort!
Yay good ending :3 Better than getting run over the first time!
I like your approach to the minimalism theme, and you did a pretty good job capturing the core essence of JC2 :)
Rad art and music, the movement was pretty tight too. Great work :)
Really awesome work and great fun. Good job guys!!
Yup same as the previous commenter sadly. Can't run your game :(
This is rad, it's a very well executed entry overall. Got caught in platforms a few times, but hey, that's to be expected when dealing with the quirks of a platform engine in a small time frame. I think the only thing I would change personally is having the possess skill home in very slightly.
Really cool style, the flickering made my eyes hurt a lil bit, but I really enjoyed what you did here. The amount of effort put into it really shows :)
I was guilty of not reading throught the instructions first and wondering where the theme fit in - then I went back and read it. Very interesting mechanic :) I suspect you might catch a bit of crap for theme interpretation, but personally I think it's a pretty imaginative direction to go in, so high marks for doing something different!
I killed Phil Fish but only because I started laughing the second I saw his name. I think this is a pretty interesting entry, I like that the text taking a while to fully load is intentional and done to see if people will impulsively hit 'kill' the second they see rape/murder/etc. Well I hope it was intentional :p
For an artistic statement, this is pretty cool :)
Doesn't seem to be working, unless there's a key that needs to be pressed to get past the Love screen? Really interested in playing this entry :)
Tough game but really enjoyable. A full version with nicer graphics and different settings would be quite fun I think :)
Couldn't unzip the windows file for some reason :(
Not sure if I'm entirely convinced this adheres to the theme ;) It's a very pretty and interesting game. One change I might suggest is having the mouse control turning, since that is the goto method for any PC FPS and I kept trying to do that and getting frustrated.
With a little more polish this would be pretty fun! The controls in the tutorial seem to be inaccurate - it says WASD but WS does nothing and space jumps. The missiles are a little finicky as well, but like I say, with a bit more tweaking this would be a neat little game :)
I think you have a really good concept here, the only thing I would alter is the camera movement, as the sudden shifts can make it very hard to aim if you happen to be in the wrong spot. Overall though, good work :) I think I was still able to shoot through walls (if the bug was referring to the green walls)?
Really really pretty graphics, a bit more polish and this could be something special :) I applaud the amount you managed to pull off in the time frame though, so good work!
"There should be 'AstroNomics_Data'
folder next to the executable" :(
I don't have any friends to play this ;_; Looks cool though!
The offkey music made me laugh :p I like it regardless of the tiny window, but will give it another play when it's fixed.
Do they get sent to the glue factory if they don't cross the finish line? ;_; Good entry, and only the second game involving kitten death I've played this LD!
Thanks for the bug reports guys, checking them out now. Looks like Game MAker is playing a bit naughty with resetting ;)
Ok, new version uploaded. Problem should be fixed, or at least most of the way fixed! :)
@link2x101 it was probably around the time I held the 4th broken body of a dead chicken in my tight fist that I realised it's actually really difficult to record realistic noises of a chicken having its skeleton punched through its body. Also expensive. Very very expensive.
@Crowbeak luckily there's at least 300 games about the end of the world to satiate the blaring obvious unimaginative interpretation of Ludum Dare themes to play, for those users with a more discerning taste :)
I can't stop seeing the character as George Costanza D: Really cool little game and impressive for the time frame. I like the animations/graphic style
It's very cute, but a little buggy with room transitions and text overlapping. Animations would really bring this entry to life I think :)
It's good to see another Game Maker user, and I honestly couldn't believe at first that the 3D was that robust, so high marks for that! Really good effort, maybe not as fitting to the theme as it could be, but it's a fun little game.
This is a great take on the theme, the controls are nice and there's a lot of potential there. The only issue I have is that there's a bit of disconnect with the art styles going on - the low fi pixel art works well, but then you have MS Paint type stuff for some elements and it takes away from the beauty of the game a little. Overall though, good job :)
Would love to see this developed further - I totally agree that attacking needs refining, but you've said this is your first LD and you've done a solid job on your entry so well done :) I hope the experience inspired you to take part in future LDs!
Fun game - music reminded me a lot of Flying Battery Zone from S&K :P
Gives me an error saying it's not a valid Win_32 idea
As someone who makes generally vile games I love this. The graphics are lovely too. I won't nitpick the lack of animation, cos the cardboard cutout style works REALLY well here. Great work :)
I really like the style of the game and the take on the theme buuuut the controls feel really really off, like the directions don't quite match up with how an isometric character would move. That's really my only criticism, but unfortunately it does bring my rating down a bit.
Really cool game! Had to look further down to see if anyone mentioned the music... I honestly thought it was some old AFI for a moment ;)
Cool game, reminded me of some sort of minigame that would be in Saints Row or GTA :)
I laughed so hard,
I fed the tard,
in the end he's gotten even fatter~
I am in love with every part of this entry. I really hope you get placed high in the ranking, cos even though this isn't a traditional game it's absolutely wonderful. I can't mimic the computer worth a damn, but I feel like I'm creating a dark and fucked up world compared the computer's pretty pastel weirdness
hahaha neat concept! I almost went with an OCD stopwatch game but I couldn't think of any way to fill the idea out. You've done a great job though :)
This is so beautiful, awesome work :)
The connection to the theme is you only ever get one virginity ;)
This is a gorgeous game and so incredibly well polished. Good luck in the rankings, though I think you're gonna get a really high score :)
FYI- Hardmode is intended for people who do data entry as a day job, because the game is way easy for them.
@Coopnasty the number scrambling is intentional (it's tied to demon suffixes, so some demons are naughtier than others) however there is a slight bug in that the scrambled number doesn't turn black along with the real number underneath. Hopefully this is something I can fix later on cos I think it requires redoing the UI. The scrambled numbers were an afterthought when I realised programmers and people who deal with Excel daily were way too good at it :P
If you see the fire particles above the scramble it means you got it and can move on.
Not entirely sure why it kept asking to disable my mouse cursor (in Chrome), but this is a pretty cool show of how strong HTML5 can be so good work :)
This is really awesome, love the audio and graphics. Really well polished entry!
Really beautiful game but the mechanics and controls need a bit of refining to be less confusing
Really good job, I concur with the other comment asking for a way to speed things up a bit :)
Really interesting concept!
Really neat concept, I think you should take a harder look at it after LD and think about turning it into a full polished game, I think you're onto something good here :)
Simplistic in style but really wonderfully effective. This is a great entry, my only gripe is to spellcheck it, and you have a legit awesome game on your hands!
I'm a bit dubious about how legit the comments are on this and the speed you're 'rating' games at. This game isn't particularly polished or unique in its mechanic. The art is mismatched so I assume assets were taken from elsewhere, which means this shouldn't be in the 48 hour section.
Quite interesting! Love the graphics and colour choices.
Interesting game mechanic, and you've made really good and intelligent design choices. Great work :)
Interesting idea, I felt the control scheme could be improved though - it felt a bit unnatural for some reason. I like the player sprite :3
hahah, what an odd entry, very good work though :)
hahaha very cute and silly game, well done :)
Very cute, well done on the entry :3
Really really cool and the art style is fantastic. This is such an awesomely polished entry. Made me feel like wanting to play a red riding hood murder sim as the wolf, being pursued by a huntsman :p
oh my god
points for your take on the theme :p
Great take on the theme!
extremely interesting concept and game. Graphics are lovely and unsettling somehow (in a good way). great job!
hahah very cool. The duck is so great :3
Cool game, I think it could've helped to have a varying colour palette since the monsters kinda blend into the background, since everything is a bit green.
Really cool idea, I think I would've gone with 9 floors as 10 being 0 was a little jarring. Other than that this is a unique and interesting take on the theme, good work :)
Pretty game :)
Gorgeous lighting! Great work :)
this is gorgeous work. Be proud, and good luck in the rankings :)
Bit finnicky but I think you put in a great effort, so well done!
Pretty cool and I'm always a fan of unique control methods. Good work :)
lots of typos and not being able to exit out of instructions unfortunately ranks this lower than it could be.I think there's an interesting concept though, but it needs some polish to hold the player's attention, especially as it seems quite in depth.
Love the graphics and animation, a lot of love has been put into this entry and that's always great to see. I hope you do well in the rankings :)
Very ambitious entry, but great work!
Good idea but I think the time limit may have hindered a bit. Keep going with the concept though, you have something promising :)
Does exactly what it says on the tin
Very creepy! A reset button would be a welcome addition. I like the herding mechanic, having to refrain from slashing people was a lot harder than I expected!
haha I love the title :p
A+ title :p
Really like the shader and the audio fits perfectly. Felt a bit vague on what exactly was happening though, but not in a frustrating way.
movement is really glitchy, but you made an entry and you get a thumbs up for that :)
bit broken, an update would've been cool!
Cute as heck!
Super cute :) Keep expanding on it if you have the time and inclination to
Pretty cool, a bit noisy visually but I like the concept :)
Really really cool job. Nice and colourful and well polished!
Crazy difficult, but I feel like there's a solid concept here if you look at the gameplay elements and refine them. I feel like it would work as a fast paced game, but you'd need to really tighten up visual cues and intuitive controls.
Cool idea. I think an expanded version would be pretty neat, with a more intuitive UI.
The audio is really top notch and suits the feel of the game. I feel like the UI could be just a bit bigger/clearer for those of us on higher resolutions. The text was unfortunately unreadable for me without squinting. Really quality effort though :)
non-working link dude :(
Well I mean nobody can say you ignored the theme :p
haha I'm almost inclined to believe you were in the gamejam irc I was in when we discussed a concept similar to this! Glad to see somebody did make this game
interesting concept, with a bit more of a consistent design I think you could have something cool here :)
Bit confusing, stylistically cool though, good work :)
I wish NZ's defence force was this good
Pretty cool entry, great job! :)
The artwork is really adorable and it's nice to see something unique :)
Ok, I think this is a pretty unique concept. Something I think would really add to this is if drawings were uploaded so people could check out what was drawn. I also feel like some of the picture sentences could be reworded, because it just felt like you were being a dick :p I actually think this could be an awesome idea if worked on and if responses were researched.
Cool concept. I think one thing that could have helped a lot is more consistency in the graphical style though. You have a good pixel style going, so it's good to not muddy it up with graphics that are aliased or of different pixel sizes. Just having that sort of coherence can go a long long way to making a polished jam entry :)
