The download has been updated with the bugfix.
The download has been updated with a second bugfix that was causing the player to be unable to view the ending.
I can't seem to reproduce that bug.
For such a simple concept the game is insanely difficult. Good work!
It's nothing more than glorified Russian Roulette. That's what I keep telling myself, but the game is inexplicably fun to play. Awesome job for a 6 hour game.
It's nothing more than glorified Russian Roulette. That's what I keep telling myself, but the game is inexplicably fun to play. Awesome job for a 6 hour game.
That was a lot of fun, and it looked good, too.
The boulders level can be made easy by jumping on a fence and jumping over the boulders. And is it even possible to beat the fire level? I always run out of time right before I hit the end, even though I never wait or pause for the fire things to move.
I'm getting a 404 for the windows download.
I just get a blank, white screen when I run it. I can hear the music, though. I'm on Win7.
I thought the controls were smooth and the strongest part of the game. Fucking hell you went all-out with the difficulty on the last level, I think I died a hundred times and I spilled at least as many expletives.
The graphics are gorgeous and it's a neat idea for a game. But you've deviated terribly far from the theme. Some sort of instruction would have been nice, I'm still not clear on the mechanics of the game. And I couldn't progress past the squares of 8 tiles even though I'd covered all the visible tiles with plants.
Nice graphics but I really don't get it. It repeated the same few levels over and over with no clear goal. It took so long to take out the phone and play the game that it was hardly worth the attempt.
I won! The looks and the sounds of it were great, and I loved the idea. That level with the three guys and lots of mines was insane, though.
I'm assuming that going off the screen means I won? I entertained myself by playing as both players at the same time.
Wow the second level is just unfair. The level design is bad and has too many leaps-of-faith that like to end in spikes. Awesome looks and idea, just needs more polish.
Any more detail than that? The graphics are OpenGL and the audio is DirectSound.
Martze: try pressing F11. It should be easier to read in fullscreen. (Assuming your monitor supports a 1024x768 resolution, I didn't have the time to make it work with others.)
Gus: I'm glad you liked it! I choose to take a definition of "second" other than time. The guy in the corner that advises a boxer is also called a second. There are no women because it would've been too much work to put hair on the faces.
Shh, shh, pie is magicked into existence by pie gophers. Not baked.
michail: And that's why you read the tutorial! Sorry, I suppose I could've added some undo to the signature space.
(And others: thanks for the feedback!)
opimality: Pfff, games where you have to think and take notes down are the best ones. Just be glad I made it so you can take the notes in-game instead of needing paper and a pen.
X-Or: Awesome! I spent a lot of time trying to get the generation just right. I think I could have improved it more if I had more time, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
brogrammers: It's a font I made myself. Incidentally, I named it "mackerel".
Gazok: the first part of the puzzle, figuring out who hates, who, is less logic and more to do with just reading each one and searching the others for conflicting traits. The second part, finding an optimal way to hire and kill, is the real logic puzzle. You know you can keep notes on each paper, right? It shouldn't be necessary to memorize anything at all.
Starspell: yep, that isn't supposed to happen. I'm not sure what could have caused it. Sorry!
Jeremias: the invoice, once signed, should provide a full report describing who you killed, who you left alive, who refused to work, and who you hired. As well as the maximum number of people who could have been hired, and the number that you did end up hiring. Also, as to the text size: have you tried fullscreen? (Press F11.)
Fantastic game! I was able to get 25 days and 2060 points.
Trying to get through the dialog was annoying. Collision was weird. There's a neat idea behind it, but it needs a lot more polish than that to be playable.
The Java program doesn't start up for me. I'm on Win7.
I won! :D
I really wish that overlapped parts became glued to each other.
Interesting idea, I'd love to see if you took it farther.
The flying keys are annoying as all hell. Nice music, though.
BUT WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS ROOM WITH A HUNDRED FUCKING FLYING KEYS? AND HALF OF THEM AREN'T ACTUALLY KEYS? I HATE YOU SO MUCH.
Man, fuck that other guy. Also, driving underneath the ball was exquisitely frustrating.
Heh, that was awesome. I haven't been able to do better than 3 generations, though.
I won! That was awesome.
I shot at the big bossy guy for a solid several minutes before losing patience and quitting. Is it even possible to fell him? Also, the controls are bad. My fingers ache from shooting.
That was really fun, and it looked pretty, too. http://imgur.com/xKnQAJM
Ha, those dudes are awesome. I love what you've done with the theme! One of my favorite entries by far.
"Gentlemen," zee Courtesan sayz, "I charge for zee viewing!" A dozen coinz fly into zee cloearing.
Zee baguette hitz zee villain's side! If eet were a rapier, zee villain would be awash in blood. But eet iz not. Eet iz a baguette.
"Estoy aburrido y quiero luchar. Es simple, no?" Zee Monsieur doez not understand. Zee Spaniard iz impatient to fight.
Zee Marquis goez into a defenseeve stance! He wavez hiz sword slowly, dramatically in front of him and movez hiz feet like a danze. But dis iz no danze, dis iz a duel. Zee Marquis lookz silly.
Oh dear god, my sides.
Dammit, man, read the book! It is SO MUCH better than the movie.
Missing MSVCP110.dll here, too.
Nice idea! I really wish there were a background, it was difficult to keep a point of reference sometimes.
I always got so flooded with X's that I never had the pieces I needed to get things working. Also, the pieces appearing spontaneously on the grid was hella annoying.
I'm getting 404s on all the links.
I scored 90,000 exactly. Nice game! With more features and things it could be really interesting, I expect.
Pretty clever little game, but it was insane trying to do some of those levels in 10 seconds.
I don't think the controls could have been worse. It took me several minutes to get past the first level, and I didn't have the patience to finish the second.
That said, it was a neat idea.
I get an error. "The program couldn't start because MSVCP110.dll is missing". I'm on Win7.
Awesome game! My only gripe is that the controls were a little difficult to work with. I loved everything else about it.
Neat idea, but it could use a little polish.
I feel like I cheated by never collecting any coins. The game is cute!
Heh, I recognize that font from Sim Golf.
http://i.imgur.com/AVGzKmQ.png
Some of those obstacles were notoriously hard to avoid.
Fun! A few collision issues, but nothing game-breaking.
chrisamaphone: That's fucking nothing. I was eating while I went into this thing.
It's awful. RobotParking: YOU'RE awful. I kinda like it.
Holy shit I won. I hate you for how absurdly little room for error there is.
How dare you make me feel a feel.
Awesome idea!
I scored 94,855. I love the graphics! Gameplay is terribly simple, though.
That was obscenely difficult. Fun, but still irritating.
Heh, that was a cute idea. I especially like the graphics.
Is it even possible to mash buttons fast enough to survive even the first enemy? I'm so confused. The tutorial doesn't clarify anything for me. Sweet tunes, though.
"Jew Bet". Heh. You're a bad person.
The frame rate was slow as to be unplayable after a while in. And I don't think the concept works very well as a strategy, it makes offense obnoxiously difficult to sustain.
The enemy control and diagonal anomalies were more annoying than fun for me. (I thought the music was pretty nice, though. Good job.)
I think it's really fun, actually! I enjoyed the jokes. All it needs is a little polish (especially in the graphics department) and it'll be awesome.
Why didn't you make W jump? That would have made things so much easier. Also, I didn't catch how the theme was relevant.
Ha! I lasted just over a minute at my best.
I got up to about 47,000 points. Fun! It only needs a goal, or some other variance.
It doesn't seem to run for me, either.
It's really awesome! No clue how to actually beat the dragon, though.
My highest score: 15
My lowest score: -32
Shit yeah
Well that was dreary.
It would've been really handy if, say, surviving soldiers gained experience and became stronger.
Your control scheme makes literally zero sense.
The music's pretty nice, actually. I like the graphics. I don't like how unforgiving the detection is. The next-to-last level was obscenely difficult. A simple ending screen would've been nice. Also, showing full numbers instead of making them blue. That was confusing.
That was a ton of fun. I played to 655 points and my high score was 198. Awesome job!
Awww, I hope my babies live. That audio is fantastic, best I've seen in the compo. The "yeah"s are endearing and the music is awesome.
There are way too many particles, the screen is busy as fuck. The mocking text when you die is funny the first few times, but after that it gets infuriating. The skeletons are adorable little fuckers, granted.
After a few minutes the frame rate dropped suddenly to the point of being unplayable. It looks nice, though, and it was a clever idea. I would have liked it more if there were fewer dead ends, and if I could have taken the map and the notes with me in a inventory.
Interesting concept! I like your interpretation of the theme. The controls could really be improved, and when I played I got a terribly low frame rate.
Excellent graphics, and I like the destructible terrain. The controls disagree with me, though, and I resent how many shots it takes to kill even the simple drone-ish enemies.
Clever idea, but I hate how space clears everything I did instead of just resetting.
Neat idea but it took a while to work out what I was supposed to be doing.
Good to hear from all of you! If I could do it over I'd definitely want to start the player off with some resources. I also wanted initially to make it a game where you fought another player for control but ain't nobody got time for AI like that. Would've had options for galaxy size and such too but, again, not much one can do in five hours.
I agree! I would've loved to do more with it had I more time. I've been working slowly on a post-compo version, hopefully it'll be a big improvement.
It's never made clear just how the square comes into play. How do I keep things going when there's more than two pentagons for every triangle? I assume it has to do with using the squares but I just can't figure it out.
Awesome! Would've killed though for some pathfinding when ordering ships around.
Wonderful! Very relaxing and fun to play. Would've been awesome to have indicators next to each number showing whether they were currently increasing or decreasing.
Fun! The planets and piracy zones have a nasty tendency to overlap in a way that completely screws over my plans.
Chrome says the download is malicious, ran it anyway and had no problems.
Wonderful! I played to completion. It was frustrating trying to nab the first planet - took me forever to run into one without laser enemies - but after that I loved it. The space travel was particularly fun, though some indicator for which planets had already been or had yet to be conquered would be nice. Several times I lost track of what I'd taken and accidentally revisited planets I'd already taken. I got a message saying I'd earned the third weapon but I couldn't seem to switch to it, the 3 key didn't work. Definitely my favorite entry so far.
It looks awesome! Was a bit confusing to play though.
Doesn't start for me either, running Windows 8 64-bit.
@aegypticus Thanks for playing! It is in fact already marked "may not be suitable for kids".
@runvs The plan was originally to have the player search for the ghost in a properly laid-out house but time constraints meant I had to compromise there way more than I liked. Glad you enjoyed it!
I would have never thought of a puzzle game like this, and I'm loving it. Fantastic job! Act 4 level 2 was probably my favorite of them all. Also, the last level of Act 4 was pure unmitigated evil and I hate you for that.
I would play the shit out of a post-compo version with more puzzles and prisoner types.
You came to the wrong neighborhood, motherfuckers
http://puu.sh/oBpQJ/106a90f0ad.png
You've got a very clever gameplay mechanic, cool pixel art, and I love that it's for the ZX Spectrum.
It's good to see an entry made for PICO-8! I played to a score of 11 and then this happened and I learned the true value of having borders: http://puu.sh/ooB4v/e5111037c1.png
Fantastic music but I don't quite understand the point of the gameplay
I feel like this could've been really fun if only there was more than the one level. I hope to see a post-compo version!
Nice idea, but the physics are wonky and hard to predict.
Is it just me or is the tutorial level really damn hard?
Echoing other comments: It's a cool idea, but aiming is extremely difficult.
Surprisingly enjoyable, but it would have benefited greatly from just a little more complexity. And I was never quite sure how to cope with my big island suddenly becoming a very small one.
I'd like to point out that the compo rules include making all your assets within the time allotted. Using the images you have means you should've entered the jam instead.
I love the idea, but it's irritatingly difficult to add on the new abilities where I want them to go. I wanted it adjacent to a particular one so as not to dramatically increase my size? Nope, now it attached diagonally to the outermost square and I can't navigate anywhere now. Fuck
I got a score of 4100, but I don't feel like that's very impressive.
It took me a few minutes to realize I wasn't playing Ikaruga. I think the game would have been more enjoyable if the player was invulnerable to bullets of the same color.
I rather liked the art. Not a bad effort at all, but it's lacking the fun aspect. Could've done with just a little more actual gameplay.
Really nice music, but the weird collision really took away from the fun.
An awesome start, but a little more game to it would've been very nice.
That was surprisingly difficult. Cool game!
Ha, it's kind of like my entry except not rated R. I like it but I may be biased
That hurt to read, and that means you did a good job.
No diagonal movement? No way to recover health? Or to attack? I love the art and music and Zelda 1 nostalgia, but it's really hard to enjoy it as a game.
It's a lovely start, and I especially liked your art, but sadly not much of a game so far.
Not much to see but it could've been a clever little entry with just a little more content
I played to the end, and I think it might have been more enjoyable if not for how it was never possible to tell what was a wall and what wasn't. It really became just push arrows and hope for the best. And the level with warped controls was kind of frustrating.
I got a score of 85! I'm very pleased with myself about that. http://puu.sh/ooC6u/502ea693da.png
I actually thought it was a great idea, but it could've been even better if the beeps formed something more melodic. The notes seem very random as it is.
