Panda Starvation by Mozzo 2013-08-26T16:18:00
The design of your panda is really great :)
The game is cool.
PS : I believe i spawned on a deadly zone several time (at least in the quick and arcade mode)

Nice looking game.
Good rhytm, good music.
I like it.
The car part, is really difficult, i end up in hospital every time x)
Wow, very good game.
One of my favorites so far :)
I like how you extended the classic "sokoban" game with power ups, the time limit also make the game a lot more challenging and interesting. Good work ;)
but ...
I'm surprised that you just used java.awt (i gave a look at your code), why not using a game library ? It would have spared you a lot of work if you had used Lwgl, Libgdx or Slick.
Awt is not really optimized for real-time rendering, and your game suffers of it.
Great music, great graphics, great gameplay :)
Nice game :)
But 90% of the time you have to answer "No".
Excellent Music, Good gameplay.
Nice effects when you die :)
I love visual novels when it's well written, and yours was really great.
Very nice experience.
The artwork is indeed unrelated, i drew it while searching for ideas :)
She's probably the pilot of the ship though.
Thanks for playing.
@fdevant
I'm sorry but i can't do anything about it, i don't have a mac to test and fix the problem. I just assumed it would have work as any java application. I removed the link for OSX. Thanks for reporting it.
I finally added a Web version. It only work with Chrome though.
Thanks for playing and for your comments.
I know the game lacks diversity, i wasn't able to implement more on this very busy week-end. I'd like to add a combo system that i originally planned, and improve ennemies' behaviour and spawning as soon as i'll get time to do it.
Nice concept :)
Works fine on Windows 8 64bit.
157 705 parsec. I just kept going and gathered barrels by luck. I like the idea.
A scrolling background would really improve the game, to make the player feel the speed.
Speaking of speed, when travelling very fast, the ship may go outside of the screen.
It's a good game, and once again a good idea, good work :)
Awesome, excellent idea !
Great :)
Awesome.
Great gameplay !
Great :)
It's really great. Very fun and addicting to make the ship evolve :)
It reminds me "Geometry Wars". Really cool and nice looking game ! I love the music :).
It's a bit difficult to control the ship though.
Great game, it's as simple and effective, as a gun shoot :D
Good idea, i like it. And it's a good challenge.
Good game, sounds are cool.
Weapons (especially shockwave) and sounds are cool.
good game :)
Awesomely strange ! I love it.
Great game :)
Really cool idea, with it's own original graphic and sound ambiance. Perfect :)
10669 pts is my best.
The game is cool and works fine in Chrome ;)
It's a great game. Very good idea and nice art.
Great ambiance, loved the colors, the shadows and the soundtrack. Very good entry !
Obviously, one of the best, if not the winning entry :)
Nice pixel art !
It's fun and shooting feels great :)
Boy, that escalated quickly !
I had 6 totems when i miserably fell into a big hole.
How many are to be found ?
Awesome, this is getting really hardcore in the end.
This sleepy fish is a badass !
Great game, graphics are amazing.
That's a weird, but really interesting interpretation of the theme (After reading your description).
No, i don't have all the hardware to do that :)
Thanks for your comments, i'll put the nesbox link in the description, i didn't knew it.
Yeah, the game is a mess and glitchy, but it was kind of a personnal challenge :)
@Jason
I started learning NES assembly last week, but found a C library and tutorial this week-end, that was much easier with C though i managed to have moving sprites with assembly. If you want to get into NES programming, you should check this website, there are cool resources, tools, and examples projects : http://shiru.untergrund.net/articles/programming_nes_games_in_c.htm
I remember someone did a Commodore 64 game two LD ago, and i don't think i'm the first to go for a NES Rom.
@GlowingSnails
Yep, it really lacks sounds for feedback, and i could have made some color palette switch as the game goes on. My mistake is that i used nearly the same palette for each dwarves sprites, and fireballs are using a color palette that is the same as the backgrounds tiles, in the end i have 3 unused palette and 5 palette that are pretty much the same. So yeah, it's almost a 4-color game.
OMG ! It's great !
Exploring as an ant is really fun, would have been perfect with some gameplay ! Well done !
What about oculus rift support ?
This is really good. I love how it speed up.
Well done !
Nice :)
The name is well chosen ^^'
The sound design is really cool, great pixel art work too.
Great concept. I love it.
I got stuck once with the red guy, he was blocked in a wall and i couldn't reach him.
Very hard !
I loved that weird intro :)
Awesome ! Great job, i was a bit confused with the mouse/keyboard controls, but with the Xbox controller it was just perfect and smooth.
2070 pts, relaxing.
Nice underwater atmosphere with this music !
Really nice game !
Graphics and transitions effects are really cool !
I don't think post-its needs introduction or text to explain what they do. The level design is enough to understand.
And it's very clever to make the user drag a post-it before the beginning of the game too.
It becomes really difficult on the third asteroid, I lost on the 4th one.
Really fun and addicting game :)
This music loop was a bit annoying though.
I won ....! :(
The music, the writing, it's really great. Nice experience.
Very fun :)
I'd like to have this drill in Starbound or Terraria :)
Short, but excellent platformer !
Nice graphics !
Got 15 pts :)
Sorry i can't do that, too much cruelty for these poor seals x)
---------
Chasing and sliding feels great :)
Wait... Your whole source code is in assembly ? That's mad ! Respect !
I wasn't able to play properly on the web emulator, too fast, and i couldn't figure out which key of my keyboard was mapped to LEFT and RIGHT, but it wasn't the arrow keys on my computer.
Then I installed WinAPE, and it was running really fine.
I love the look of the game, it's really clean looking and polished for an Amstrad game.
Then regarding gameplay, the first level, is maybe a bit long and boring, maybe it would more interesting if the "blue zone" was larger, and if there was more "information dots" to intercept from the beginning ?
Great job, very impressive entry.
I loved the humor of the game. It has great graphics, and a catchy music.
But... I got trapped  !
Great job !
Really nice game for the Atari, that's a really impressive entry and actually a better game than some that were released full price for the system back then !
As a fellow retro dev enthusiast, i'm really tempted by the Atari 2600, do you have any resources to recommend to get started ?
Nice graphic style ! I like it.
Très belle expérience. Bravo !
One of my favorite entry so far. I got ending 2/2. But the last day was a bit tedious, because of the respawn location.
Great job overall !
HTML 5 works fine for me.
As soon as i managed to get the balloon to the end of the path, i got a win message, then i pressed escape, and another balloon to protect just spawned, but i could not make it in time all the way back to save it !
I wasn't sure what the blue balls were doing in the very beginning of the game but figured it out as soon as i saw the health bar decreasing. Maybe more instructions about what to do, and what to protect the balloon from would help.
Of course animations and sound would also need to be added.
Otherwise IT works, you submitted your game and it fits the theme pretty well. Good Job !
I was really surprised when it turned into a Tiger. I genuinely had a good laugh, thanks  Very fun, great job !
I see a lot of people using this Pico-8 platform, and now i want to try it !
This is the best game i've played so far. I really enjoyed it. Great job !
Wait... do cats lays eggs now ?
Nice game, the birds are fun and hard to deal with. Good Job !
(And it's super cute !)
I love the design and the concept. It is great to include text in the level design to explain mechanics
However, I had a very hard time getting past Level 2. Then later in Level 4 you explain that being smaller make you go faster and higher. I feel like, either you should have explained that earlier, or made the Level 2 introducing the shadows way easier ! :)
But this is great work, it fits the theme very well and the graphics are really cute ! Well done !
Great Job ! I love that style and it fits the theme very well !
This is : "Hotline Miami, but you save lives instead of taking them"
As @ben657, a timer for speedrunners would be a great addition !
Great puzzle game, with interesting and fresh mechanics, that respect both the theme and the meme, well done !
Great job on the cat animations, he does behave exactly like the one i know. (Sleeping and eating)
At first i thought : "This is way too easy", then the room was filled with empty food cans and it got a bit more challenging to clean everything so the cat could eat. But in easy mode, I could have gone forever as well, i stopped at ~500.
But Hard mode was really hard and challenging, i only got 92 at best.
Good job !
Nice to see a game written in Rust-lang :)
This looks really good and the music and the sounds effects fits so well. Definitely one of my favorite entry so far.
Great job, and congratulations to your team.
Simple concept, yet a challenging puzzle game.
Good job !
This is a simple arcade game, but well executed. I like the retro style. Great job for your first LD entry !
Very polished game. Great sounds and graphics.
Well done !
Visually unique. But i have to admit that the lack of real texture combined with the high sensitivity made me a bit dizzy on my first try. But once I got used to it, i was able to play without trouble.
I like the background music, and that thing in the shredding box that eat bodies and junk was really cute somehow. So that you know, I also managed to produce this bug :
bug.png
But, overall, this is a great entry, good job !
Ha ha  Thanks. I really loved your entry @obscenelytrue, very impressive to see an Amstrad game in the compo.
Thanks everyone for the feedback.
@greizgh, @magnusfurcifer, Yes, the projectiles are really fast, it did not seems too extreme for me though, maybe your emulator is making the game faster than it actually is ?
But yeah the player's projectile are really fast by design and there is actually a technical reason behind this choice.
By making the player projectile that fast, it means that they also dissapear faster, which save on sprite count on screen, on RAM needed to store the state of the bullets and on the number of collision checks to perform on each frame.
Because, the NES has a limit of 64 '8x8' sprites displayed on screen, and a maximum of 8 '8x8' sprites can be displayed on each 'scanline'. So to avoid any issues, and flickering i limited the player gun to 4 projectile. So it is enough to display two virus, the Player, the NPC, and the 4 bullets, on one line before flickering starts.
Otherwise should the player fire from the extreme left side of the screen to the right side, there would be a lot of bullets to display, as well as lag because of the increasing number of collision check to perform. (And the game is far from being perfectly optimized for the system, as it is written in C)
To demonstrate what could happen, I just built an example ROM where i increased the number of bullets the player can fire, and reduced their speed to 1 px per frame (which is really slow for demonstration purpose), look at how glitchy and laggy it can get :
https://github.com/Khopa/protector_ldjam46/releases/download/1.0.1-glitchy/protector_slow_bullets_example.nes
@thewrath Thanks !
If you are interested in programming for the NES, you should definitely check this website out : https://shiru.untergrund.net/articles/programming_nes_games_in_c.htm
It has a bunch of very simple examples, tools, resources, and general advices that might be better to get you started.
@baylej
Yes it is.
raoult.png
Just don't read too much into it. I needed a doctor photography, and the guy being kind of a meme, i decided to go with that. I'm surprised that he's even recognizable, as i did an awful job when trying to convert the picture to 4 color NES compatible format.
@sokette
I did not grew up with the NES either, and i totally get your point. I played most of the popular games later, but still.
I wasn't aware of most limits before i started really reading about the system and coding for it.
And now that i know a little bit more about it, i'm actually really impressed by the games that were released back then, and what developers achieved with the system.
You really managed to transcript that space station ambience with so few pixels, it is great ! I did not manage to finish the game, it is hard. (but expected for a survival horror game)
Reminds me of Dead Space :)
Good Job !
Nice platformer. I love the style and the character is really cute. I would have kept playing more levels :)
To improve it, maybe add a timer for speedrunners ?
Good job ! Nice entry.
Is it possible to save their relationship ? These people are awful ! It's really not worth saving them, better end it from turn 1
(The HTML5 version worked fine for me, if it is too small you can just click on the "expand" button to go fullscreen.)
Nice UI, and humor. Good job !
Really nice style for the characters sprite ! The background music fits well. Good job !
Very relaxing game, after playing a bunch of stressful survival game, it is a welcome change of pace for me.
I managed to get 379 points on my best run. Then I got too greedy and died. I also lost a few health points by accidentaly not spending all my cards. I know there is a warning, but maybe a confirmation popup would be nice to avoid doing mistakes.
I like the graphics, and the background sounds, and it fits the theme really well.
Great job !
@singleshoe I was very lucky on the draw, i ended up with multiple sprinkler early on, and then it was easy to get going without letting any crops die. On my others attempts, i struggled to get more than 30/40 points.
I love the Game&Watch look. Good idea, well done !
So, there is now a game with Shadoks and Gibis in 3D, my life is complete ! :)
That Shadok in the introduction looked really great, i'm a bit sad we don't them more during gameplay.
Maybe it can be hard to figure out what to do for people that are not familiar with Shadok science and physics.
Game works nice and fit the theme, nice work !
I like the fact that you have to be a bit strategic and shoot at the bonus item to get rid of them if they don't fit the baby needs.
Good job for your first LD submission and first completed game !
