LD29 — Beneath the Surface

Last Dive by Gabriel 2014-05-01T15:10:00

You just broke the moodometer. Good job!

- It started on the very first screen, with a sunset by the sea.
- Immediately after, the cable, that only link between my panicky avatar and the safety of the surface, broke. Hmmm, could it be a symbol?
- Then the loneliness and otherworldliness of the depth conveyed by mean of darkness and ominous sound,
- The clumsiness of walking in a diving suit, the mysterious radio operator that spoke in "..."
- As I was about to reach for the light, you made me fall into the abyss. Expectable, but still.
- Then I see dead people.
- Including the remains of my own wife.
- Then you started quoting Edgar Allan Poe. Are you fucking kidding me?
- The false dilemma about facing my greatest far (which I ended up running away from anyway), and emerging into a tunnel of light after my reincarnation was just routine moodsploitation after that.

Anyway, it totally should have been Annabel down there.

Deep Diver by Valandre 2014-04-30T18:27:00

In French: Ok, alors toi t'as regardé No-Life, 101%, Les oubliés de la Playhistoire, sur la borne d'arcade Anteater.

In English: This is a straight-up copy of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UC8niyVJRg .

Last week, on a french TV channel dedicated to games and geeky things, in a recurring program about forgotten games, the topic was the arcade machine "anteater". This LD48 entry is such a close copy that saying "inspired by arcade classic games" is dishonest. It's a remake of one very precise game. That I get a hunch neither of us would have known about if it were not for that TV program.

It's a well made entry though. Nice graphics and animation, good feel overall. I just wish you were more upfront about your inspiration.

Ripple Runner by DDRKirby(ISQ) 2014-04-30T01:18:00

It is perfect!* I'm loving it!

It's simple (a runner game) but original (E&R mechanic). It still looks like something quickly made for a game jam, (I mean, not like those discouragingly good entry from pro dev that manage to pull a complete polished game in 24hr), yet super good because you had just the right ideas and the right chemistry.

I guess you already know how delicious your music is, considering you put ingame jukebox + download links.

* except that sometimes my pressing of space is ignored.

Beneath the surface by Vawx 2014-04-28T19:36:00

172 megabytes, 50 minute download for a Ludum Dare entry? That must be why you have so few comments and rating.

Descent by alyphen 2014-04-29T00:06:00

Hard and unforgiving: It's easy to lose many lifes in quick succession as when you bump into wall, you can immediately rebump into it. At first I thought my space key was broken, but then I found a laser in some underground treasures. Not sure what to do with the wisp though.

Thanks for your support of arrows keys!

Escape From Guardian (Fixed link!) by Pheonise 2014-04-28T07:09:00

Err, yeah, it looks like you put the wrong bit.ly url there.

Drip by savethejets1 2014-04-30T04:45:00

Not a valid Win32 application.

Alienaria by Moebius 2014-04-28T08:24:00

And another WASD only, widescreen-only release. Please think of us who have AZERTY keyboards and 1280x1024 screens.

The game engine is nice, I like how dirt scraps and bloody chunks accumulate. It doesn't even slown down after having dug and killed for a while.

I don't really see the link with the theme. I mean, yes, you can dig and go downward, but is that enough to fit the "Beneath the Surface" theme?

Since the shots are spawned at the gun muzzle, you can't dig the squares just next to you, which is annoying.

Sadly, despite the technical quality, the gameplay becomes boring very quick. Maybe with more block types, faster digging, a lot more enemies, etc.. it could become a good game? After all, this is a Terraria skeleton, and I poured countless hours into Terraria.

Mini Metro Subway Tycoon by ripatti 2014-04-28T06:53:00

The control are unwieldy. I mean, of course a transport tycoon / simcity -like requires a more complex interface than your average plateformer, but the way to place station is really not intuitive. It's a game about making metro lines to relieve the surface from traffic jam, so it fits the theme. Couldn't hear any sound, so no points for that. Graphics are nice, and the game is overall polished.

Fragment by rxi 2014-04-28T21:41:00

This doesn't pass as a game to me. A circle slowly moving to text paragraphes. A handful levels of greyness. Broody chiptune.

I know game jams are the place to express your minimalistic, artsy side, but this pushes it too far.

GeoCrush by Punga 2014-04-28T06:43:00

Err, how do I go past the initial instruction/wall of text? I tried everykey and mouse button.

SpoonWalker by squale 2014-04-28T07:39:00

Woohoo! Remappable keys! Thanks.

While it may be unintended, the ability to bypass most of the level by jumping above the top edge of the screens reminds of SMB3.

Mithril by FalconGames109 2014-04-28T07:12:00

It is widescreen only, so on my 1280x124 the text is cut on the right.

Wriggle Worm by gikdew 2014-05-01T00:32:00

I have no idea why this raked five hundred votes, while games better on all accounts remain stuck at two.

The Last Dwarf by Nuclear_Hammer 2014-05-01T00:18:00

Not a fun game. Enemies resurrect seconds after you smash them, making it a game about finding the stair before the mob train corners you.

I thought that indie devs would know more than unskippable cutscenes are the devil's work.

You didn't even bother following the theme: from the intro, it looks like it takes place inside a mountain, not "beneath the surface".

The skull on the main menu, and the intro text were lovely though. Rest of the game was a disappointment.

P.F.G - Portable Forcepoint Generator by gabbsson 2014-04-28T08:55:00

Very nice entry. So nice I wasn't even mad it is yet another WASD-only, widescreen-only game. Because for once it seems there's some content, polish, and engaging gameplay here.

The character sometimes gets stuck on the very corner of blocks. It can be unstuck, but still would be better if it could be fixed. I found the difficulty uneven. Took me way too long to pass the lava moat on the second level. Then I finished the games just as I was getting the hang of it: it's not obvious that to close a vortex you have to open a new one of the same color.

Dwarves Manager, NES Game by Khopa 2014-04-28T19:24:00

Kudos for picking an unusual and retro-hipsty plateform.

The gameplay is original, but unwieldy and not fun. All three dwarfs are getting bombarded by a DoDonPachiesque amount of fireballs, but to move one you have first to cycle to him. When digging, the only feedback is the gold counter increasing. I distinctly remember NES having more colors than bronze, maroon and black: run on a NES emulator, but looks like a Gameboy game.

Symphony of Life by Bernhard 2014-04-28T09:04:00

This looks like ... one of those musical games where you have to hit a colored key amongst four when the pointer goes over it? Or something like that? I didn't really get it. Cool nonetheless.

Kriller Whale by spock9a8 2014-05-01T00:02:00

My keyboard is AZERTY. That means the keys WASD do not form a neat little T like on yours. Would anybody please think of the AZERTY keyboards?

This is a simple and unoriginal game. Is the water color pulsating a bug or a feature?

Thanks for your participation. Making something is already an achievement.

I found your game by searching mine, which is also about being an orca.

Mine Story by donan 2014-04-28T06:28:00

The web version runs slowly, making control difficult: input lag makes my character go or dig where I don't want to. Thanksfully the Win32 version runs better. But still, the digging mechanic doesn't feel very smooth. Also, the character doesn't auto-level when trying to enter a 1 cell gape when off by a few pixels, always annoying. The gameplay isn't very original. Nevertheless, on a technical level this entry is good: There are no bugs, the game feature many different trap and power-ups, the graphics and sound are what you'd expect from a game from a jam, etc..

Wireside by Solifuge 2014-04-30T19:24:00

When I click "End Turn", or when I alt-tab out and do something else for a bit, it scroll out of the map, into the dark, and I feel lost and scared because I'm afraid I won't manage to find back the play area.

I wish there were keyboard shortcut, because the entirely mouse driven interface is tiring to use after a while.

Nice little entry though. Would also have fitted well in the recent Cyberpunk jam.

Soul Dive by John Drury 2014-04-28T07:24:00

Balancitos by NickZangus 2014-04-29T00:39:00

Cool concept.

Depth Factor by Biliogadafr 2014-04-30T03:12:00

Arrows are not supported.

Too much inertia and floating in the movement.

Monster keep spawning, in massive number, constantly.

No health indicator.

Too easy with infinite jetpack makes it too easy: just dig straight up.

Miner Problem by Zednaut 2014-04-28T06:39:00

On the menu, you have to press Z, which isn't explained anywhere (except in the instruction menu, which you can only read if you know that you must press Z to enter it). Anyway, while the key mapping took me a bit to get used to, at least it isn't WASD. The graphics are super cute, and the gameplay/control pretty smooth. The enemies encountered have varied behavior, and the level is filled with interesting things to discover. If I could remap keys to jump with up arrow, I could even see me playing this for a while, just for the pleasure of it.

Underground Siege by sfdnetwork 2014-04-30T19:44:00

I right click on the .jar, open, and ... nothing happens. Most other Games-in-a.jar run fine, so I don't think problem is on my side.

Sundiver by kmakai 2014-04-30T05:08:00

Minimalist... but not in a good way! There's too little pixels, too little colors, too little gameplay there.

SUBLEVEL ZERO by Lyje 2014-05-01T16:54:00

Procedural-generated, perma-death, chiptuned, Descent?
And you thought about Y-invert!
You have my attention there!
.... downloading ....
Ok, it does feel like Descent, indeed! =D

The tiny blue robot with the red flashing light can move around faster than I turn my mouse, that is annoying.
I miss having the countdown to escape in a shaking mine after destroying the core.
Could you add some more wall texture variety?

Still amazing for 72hr jam.

There need to be a voting star scale to rate the opposite of innovation. Like nostalgia or faithfulness. So I could give you an extra 5 there.

House of Clouds by Azzar 2014-04-29T00:33:00

Erm, is it a gamepad only, keyboard not supported, game? None of my keypresses seemed to have any effect.

Hive by derdragon 2014-05-05T17:54:00

Cool ideas, but a little buggy:
- I couldn't see the blocks, only the background, for several minutes. Then I switched to a worker, dug, and bam the blocks started showing.
- I got a crash at the beginning of wave 3.
- Got stuck in flying mod, with the flying sound, for trying to climb a narrow vertical shaft. Had to fall back down for it to stop.

But it's a nice concept and could be fun once debugged.

BTS-1337 by icereci 2014-04-28T19:49:00

A game where most of the time all your screen show is blackness is not a good game in my book. Gameplay is about navigating between dangerous object and good objects without seeing well. Uninteresting. The graphics don't blend. Like, you left white outline around the mines. Bust mostly, they looked detached from the background and surrounding. Maybe because of their high resolution, level of details, lack of animation, staticness, or whatever.

Thanks for your participation.

Hammerhead Sharks Against Humanity by davidcollado 2014-04-28T07:20:00

Simple, but effective.

Wormy's Adventure by conno1234 2014-05-01T01:15:00

This game is charming. It's shame it has so few votes. Through the simple graphic, we can tell this game was handcrafted by a caring and loving creator. The worm little happy face, especially with party hat ON, broke my heart.

The gameplay, despite its old familiar outlook, is actually well thought and well executed. Apples, seeds, spitting, it all fits. The transition between above ground control and underground is so flawlessly natural it took me an active effort to notice it.

The only minor things I would improve is giving the worm some health, because dying happens very quickly. Having to find all the object before unlocking next level also makes the game a bit too hard. I noticed a small bug near the end of level 1, where jumping out of the bird platform made me break through the bottom border of the screen.

Don't sweat over the lack of levels, there is way more content, and way more soul, here, that in the 500 votes entry above you in alphabetical order.

ResourceDivers by Rock48 2014-04-30T04:40:00

Please don't upload Win64 only application. Not everybody runs a 64 bit system.

You're lucky I know I can extract and rezip your exe to run it with a x86 love binary.

Annnnnd ... it's WASD only! My keyboard is azerty. Do you know what that means?
Look at one since you obviously haven't heard of their existence: http://s13.postimg.org/vb1k0vohv/wasd_azerty.jpg

Had to edit your code into:
Line 906: if(love.keyboard.isDown("w") or love.keyboard.isDown("up")) then
Line 111: if(love.keyboard.isDown("s") or love.keyboard.isDown("down")) then
Line 120: if(love.keyboard.isDown("a") or love.keyboard.isDown("left")) then
Line 126: if(love.keyboard.isDown("d") or love.keyboard.isDown("right")) then

Ok now I can play it.

And it doesn't make much sense.

Why are iron nuggets standing still water?

Why does running out of air brings and reaching for the surface both bring me to the same screen?

Are you sure forcing to interrupt the game with that screen every 7s (until get upgrade) was that a good idea?

Do you really expect me to grind that silly game for as long as it took you to make it?

I'm sorry but had to quit and restart after giving me cheat codes when I reached the "65 uranium" item stages.

Havoc2d by Idkfawin32 2014-04-28T19:02:00

Graphics are crisps and controls are responsive. The game concept perfectly fits the compo theme, and is somewhat original. I liked the differential scrolling for the cavern background. Of course, being made in 48hr, there is little content.

Havoc2d by Idkfawin32 2014-04-28T19:03:00

I feel like a broken record repeating that on every entry, but, please support arrows keys in addition to WASD. Some of us have azerty keyboards.

The Sands of Time by Drek 2014-04-30T05:11:00

Make it compatible with Win32.

GreenWar by JNT 2014-04-30T05:18:00

Simple and unoriginal. But still fairly enjoyable (compared to some other LD entries). I really enjoyed the penultimate paragraph of the backstory intro screen too.

Creatures from beneath the surface by schnüt 2014-04-28T09:14:00

This comment contains spoilers.

At first it looked very simplistic. Then I fell down the cavern, and found a nice new tileset, with pretty columns. Then I found a bouncing blob. Not really sure if it reacted to my space bar or just randomly grew on its own, but anyway it helped me going back to the upper levels. Then I found a second blob, and reached the top of the tower, and I guess it was the end of the game even if no message announced it? The scrolling is a bit jerky, and it's not too deep or complex a game, but still nice and cozy.

Oh, thanks alot for using arrow keys!

Kill or Kill by GreatBigJerk 2014-04-30T05:37:00

First entry I play that plays the psychological interpretation of the theme.

Controls are a bit clunky, but being a murderous psychopath felt so good I'm willing to forget it.

TunnelGunner by AngryPriest 2014-04-29T00:25:00

Excellent game mechanics. Flowing swiftly into the earth to grab gems, then jumping into the air, deploying guns and blazing some dudes, before diving again in the depth. Feels good, and is quite original. The graphics are of the MS-Paint style, but it's LD48, and anyway they do the job.

I kinda wish we didn't have to use the two mouse buttons to fire, especially since it won't work if right key is held before breaking the surface. Also, maybe some animation when we die? My TunnelGunner just stops moving after a while, and I can only guess that it's due to a lack of health.

Xen'Juru Adventure by micdoodle8 2014-04-28T07:16:00

WASD only, and widescreen only? ;_; Well, at least it runs on Win32. But still not something I can play, even if I wanted to.

Killer Without Color by GlowingSnail 2014-04-28T08:02:00

For the graphics: the rules of LD48 imposed that I made them myself, during those 48hr. And I'm more a coder than an artist.

I surprised myself by managing to draw a decent orca and passable seal with a pencil and piece of paper (that I then redrew with a pen, scanned, cleaned, retouched, colored, etc..). Took little time for a nice result. By "nice", I mean, coming from someone like me who's used to saying "such a pity I can't draw".

The use of the particle system adds a lot to the graphical prettiness, and wasn't at all planned initially.

So personally, I was expecting much worse graphics, coming from myself.

The only thing I wish, is to have had the time for animated orca and seal. Either by deforming polygons, or via sprite-sheets. That orca really ought to flex its body when swimming.

Killer Without Color by GlowingSnail 2014-04-30T05:41:00

You are right:
- You cannot win.
- You cannot lose.

Depending on where you draw the lines, I may have actually failed to make a game...

Killer Without Color by GlowingSnail 2014-05-01T04:06:00

As I said:
- The source is inside the .exe file: Just open the .exe file with 7-zip.
- The source is also inside the .love file : Just open the .love file with 7-zip.

A .love file is just a renamed .zip file. The game exe is made by appending the content of the .zip/.love to a love.exe.

You are right about the lack of goal, audio and animation. I must work harder to fit them in, if I am to enter a compo again.

Undercover by Shivur 2014-04-28T07:07:00

Another game that only support wasd, to the dismay of AZERTY users like me. The game is simple and unoriginal. The start and game-over screens are full of grammatical and spelling errors. Well, then it's hard to make a 48hr game, and don't mean to be mean. Kudos for managing for having managed to release a playable game, and thanks for your participation.

Submarine Warfare by Torri Y 2014-04-29T00:09:00

I click on it: A java exception has occurred.

I would have bashed you for imposing WASD controls anyway.

FoxyTank by matthias_zarzecki 2014-04-28T21:20:00

I really like that kind of game. That is, top-down view, where you move with keyboard, and aim with mouse. So thanks for that!

Gameplay was smooth, obviously lacking content but still felt good. I wish there was a minimap, because otherwise finding back the crashed ship is about randomly roaming empty cavern until you stumble on it by a stroke of luck. The long lasting tracks were a nice touch. Also, is it me, or is there no key to quit?

Shovel Quest by Nanolotl 2014-04-28T07:32:00

The engine is fast and responsive, that feels good. The blocky 3D engine with pixellated texture, while not original, is kinda cute. Passing the levels require a bit of thinking each time, which is good. Good entry overall!

Fist of Truth by djdduty 2014-05-01T01:23:00

I have an AZERTY keyboard. So please also accept arrow key input instead of just WASD.

I tried to run the game, but all I get are white rectangle over black background. Because of how they are grouped together, I suspect each white rectangle is character, that is incorrectly rendered on my system.

Could not play.

LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

Yum Kaax Relic by VividReality 2015-04-22T15:30:00

Initially, I thought the banana would just stun, and that I had to find another way to actually kill the bear or escape. And so I was about to give up, until I read the comments.

It's a bit confusing that the room the stair leads to depends on your progress, and not which stair you take.

The save/load interface, while clever, is too unusual. Maybe for a longer game it'd do, but here, first time I saw it, I thought it meant "Press slash to save", and wondered if the DEL writing on the detonator meant the del key or was a decoration. When I used E on the detonator and heard a sound, I wondered where a wall had been blown up. It's only after dying to the second bear, retrying, and noticing the skipping of first bear that I understood.

It bothers me that the character is walking backward or sideway most of the times. Usually I like such control scheme where you move with keyboard and aim with the mouse, but here, I wish there was some code to make it face where it's going and only turn to mouse pointer when firing (I guess with some after delay since firing can take only a frame). Thought I understand it would complicate the code a fair bit.

As with half the entries in LD, I wish you'd have added arrow key support (I have an AZERTY keyboard!!), but at least, for löve projects, I can add them myself.

I can't help but only list only negatives, but it was actually a nice entry. The graphics are cute, effort was taken to follow the theme, the game is polished and feels whole.

How did you even create the monkey cry?

Fathom by Joe Williamson 2015-04-25T19:52:00

Nice, but then I'm sad because it's so short.

The bullets are a tad too fast in normal mode. It's nigh impossible to catch them if you're not already in slow mode before they're fired.

Curved Curse by S0lll0s 2015-04-25T18:41:00

The respawn timers are way too short, enemy shots way too fast (they snipe me from out of screen), and my weapon range way too short (it can't exit past most walls).

An Unconventional Boat by zell2002 2015-04-25T19:22:00

- Don't name your game LD32 please.
- Clever use of shader for water.
- Doesn't fit the theme, sinking boats aren't weapons. Unless you take into account the twist ending, which isn't fleshed enough to make sense.
- Why do these boats even have reactors?
- Thanks for arrow keys support.

I had no idea shrimps contained so much fuel.

jontturi: Please use Löve 9.2, not 9.1.

http://www.love2d.org/wiki/ParticleSystem:setLinearDamping is indeed only available in 9.2

joppiesaus: I planned to have a health bar, because indeed death happens too quickly. Didn't make it though. I put a two seconds forced delay between the game over and the moment you can restart, because otherwise, if you happened to press a key at the same time, you wouldn't even see the game over screen. But maybe two seconds is too long.

DKoding: Yeah, in V08 you spawn way too close to an enemy, so if its randomly chosen direction make it head toward you, you indeed die unfairly. I fixed that for the V09.

Windmill Games: It's just a matter of adding a little inertia. Key press increase your speed in that direction, and speed is constantly slowly decreased.

Something like:

if key=="up" dy=dy+1
if key=="down" dy=dy-1
if key=="left" dx=dx-1
if key=="right" dx=dx+1
x=x+dx
y=y+dy
dx=dx*0.95
dy=dy*0.95

The bullet sounds are me dropping and pushing over a little metal stud. The spiny thing death sound is me clapping hand, played at a much slowed down speed. The wavy thing is me flapping a bag, at a lowered pitch.

I used Audacity to record, clean, cut, denoise, amplify and tweak the pitch and speed of the sound clips.

Thanks for trying!

Because I play with arrows, I didn't notice I bound A to both fire and movement until the day after. Sorry for this silly error of me.

THUMP by Steffan 'Ruirize' James 2015-04-25T17:24:00

Larger killzones, slower drones, or faster thumper reload would make it less random.

Kitty Wings - html5 web- by Buko-Studios 2015-04-20T13:19:00

It is cute. I can see indeed the Sonic influence.

There is blackness above the sky. I was afraid it had glitched, though thankfully I eventually glided down to the light blue.

I am trojan horse by Evine 2015-04-25T18:53:00

Too many spelling errors: Trojan, accept, persist, heart, bubble.

And what the horse says doesn't even make any sense in this context.

Super Skater Waiter by MikkelLevisen 2015-04-25T17:19:00

It's fluid and pleasant to play, but hard. I never manage to feed all the customers in time, and I'm not sure what the dish thrower is for.

The graphics are very nice, but the controls are horrible.
