LD47 — Stuck in a loop

A bright light flashes and when it subsides... by KunoNoOni 2020-10-10T07:38:24Z

I really enjoyed the story, and appreciate the effort that went into the writing - that's really hard to achieve in compo time constraints. The music has the correct vibe for this kind of game - adds some atmosphere, but not invasive enough to distract from engaging with the story. I think a bit of time could be spent polishing up the presentation - i.e the text alignment. Also, I think it could be helpful to have a larger font size, or even multiple font sizes that the player can choose from. But overall, I thought it was a good take on the theme, and an enjoyable story.

All the same by Erkberg 2020-10-08T18:50:19Z

This is absolutely gorgeous. Really drew me in, and the music fits the mood perfectly. If I had one minor point, it'd be quite nice to have some visual indicator of the mouse at the very beginning - after reading the instructions mentioning there was mouse control, I was convinced it was a bug that the pointer wasn't present until I hit that second loop. But otherwise, absolutely excellent.

Terra Nova by LTyrosine 2020-10-09T16:35:36Z

Nicely made game. One suggestion I have is to have a bit more information on what the various objects do available in-game: either through pop-ups, or a help screen (this is something I always forget to do in my games too :)). I think the core game loop is great, and I think there's a lot of potential here.

the subject by drtizzle 2020-10-09T15:50:33Z

I really like the use of the camera in this game - it's slightly skewed in a way which highlights the mood, but never enough to detract from the action of the game. Music fits really well, and the attack is really satisfying. I had a lot of fun with it :)

John & Terry by cleitoneldorn 2020-10-09T15:59:08Z

Absolutely great - was stuck in the loop for a while, but felt there must be some secrets so tried a few different things, and am very glad I did :). Twist was brilliant, art style is cute, and the jump feels nice and responsive.

Rogue Pickup by frozenfire92 2020-10-09T17:33:47Z

I think this could be a lot of fun with a few tweaks. I wasn't getting a huge feel of acceleration from the car, which in turn meant smashing into the zombies wasn't quite as satisfying as it could be. The zombies are a little too easy to outwit and outrun. I think with a couple of days more polish, addressing things like soundtrack (and possibly car upgrades?) there could be a lot of fun in this idea.

The Red Twins Assassination by ErikU 2020-10-10T07:49:04Z

I really appreciate the care that went into animating the main character, it feels incredibly polished for a compo entry. I think the core mechanics are great, particularly using the daggers to pull yourself forward. My only thought is I think the camera could benefit from being zoomed out slightly - sometimes, when the drones were approaching from the bottom of the screen, they killed me before I was really aware of their presence. But otherwise, a great idea for a game, and one I think would be worth exploring further.

BOOTLOOP_RECOVERY by Tsunscreen 2020-10-09T16:49:24Z

The mood is incredibly, and I'm absolutely blown away that you achieved something this polished in 48 hours. Like a few others have commented, I think the difficulty could benefit from being tweaked to be a little more challenging. But otherwise, I think it's great idea well implemented.

Last Command by GettingRekt 2020-10-09T17:02:55Z

I had a lot of fun with this - took me a while to work out how the acceleration/deceleration affect the position of the loop, but after I did I had a great time. I think the victory conditions need a little tweaking - on the last level I completely missed the runway, but still got a perfect landing result. Otherwise, great fun

The Loop by thesnide 2020-10-09T16:18:16Z

This is a great idea that perfectly matches the theme. It's frustrating in the most positive possible way, and I felt motivated to play multiple times in order to beat my previous performance - on that note, some sort of scoreboard to track your best run might be a nice feature for this kind of game. I had a huge amount of fun with it - great little game.

UFO taxi! by island-jam-2-group-3 2020-10-10T06:55:09Z

Really good idea, and I think you have the beginnings of a substantial and innovative puzzle game here. It's definitely a positive that I finished it wishing it was longer :). I think that the soundtrack could use some more polish, but that's always hard to do with compo time constraints. In summary, I really enjoyed this and think you've got a completely solid core game loop that's worth playing with and expanding further.

Catch the Loops by drnoir 2020-10-08T18:06:45Z

I really like the minimalist soundtrack here - it enhances the mood significantly, and works very nicely with the aesthetic. The hitboxes probably need a little further tweaking - I found they kind of flipped between being overly generous and overly harsh depending on the bug I was trying to catch. As a random thought, one thing that could be nice is to add some sort of shadow to the player object, to give some indication of where it is relative to the obstacles.

Blastaround by andrew-marsh 2020-10-09T16:23:21Z

Really fun experience - great take on a retro classic. I was kind of shocked that such a simple addition to hard mode could increase the difficulty so much, but that's a credit to the strength of the core idea. Like others, I think the mood could have been enhanced with a bit of a soundtrack, but the sound effects work nicely, and overall I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Tower of Madness by Eduardo Yukio 2020-10-10T07:16:29Z

Thoroughly enjoyed this - that first spike flying out of the ground brought back painful memories of iwbtg :). I think the balance you've achieved here is brilliant - I really like how the difficulty drops slightly when you introduce a new mechanic, then ramps back up over the following levels. I think that a soundtrack would definitely help, but that's always tricky in 48 hours. Also, I feel like the hitbox on the red boxes could be made be just slightly more forgiving, just by a pixel or so. But overall, I had a great time with this game.

Hiccup Time by Somogy 2020-10-08T18:41:26Z

This was really fun. Cute art style, and good use of sfx. It took me a couple of attempts to realise that the mechanic requires you to careful plan the player's position at each step. Really nice - I think with a few more ways to utilise the hiccup mechanic, this could be expanded into something really special.

Perseverance by freeworld 2020-10-09T15:44:22Z

Really like the mood, music and artwork - creates a great haunting atmosphere. The balance feels a little harsh - I feel like I couldn't keep pace with the health bar. But I enjoyed playing it - it was a fun challenge to survive as long as possible.

GLASS CLEANER 2077 by 730 2020-10-08T18:14:12Z

Really enjoyed this. Absolutely packed with style - great artwork and appropriate soundtrack. Really well written.

Looping Robot by zilulu 2020-10-10T07:29:50Z

Really great puzzle game idea. Like a few others have commented, I also think this could benefit from preserving the commands when you retry a level. Also, I feel this game is at its strongest when the levels are slightly tighter - the very open level I encountered ended up being a case of trial and error, rather than trying to think through the puzzle. But overall, I think with a couple of days more polish, I think this could be a rock-solid puzzle game, with a lot of opportunities for interesting puzzle design based on the core mechanic.

Die with the spikes by JaviCoder 2020-10-08T19:35:56Z

Very nicely done within 48 hours. One suggestion would be to speed the camera pan slightly - when the next block is a significant distance away, I found myself having to wait for it to enter the camera's visibility. The music is really nice - appropriate to the mood without being invasive. I had fun playing it :)

One Day at a Time by PerfectSquare 2020-10-09T17:27:51Z

This is lovely. It really uses the theme in an effective manner to tell a touching and relatable story. The art style fit really nicely. A sountrack would have elevated it further, but aside from that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Newster - A Fantasy Social Media Sim by NamidaSai 2020-10-09T16:29:33Z

Really nice art style, and really well written. I think that including a soundtrack would definitely benefit the game's atmosphere. I think at it's core, this is a really interesting concept with an absolute wealth of possibilities for storytelling if you choose to keep working on it :)

Stop Motion by Cafe Ducha Siesta 2020-10-09T16:12:24Z

I had a lot of fun with this. Had a few laps of confusion until I realised the chase car keeps largely to the middle, and the trick is to keep an eye on the map for the bends to minimise the distance between that and the player car. I think level 4 could possibly benefit from a different background - I found it a little disorientating, and didn't really give a good sense of acceleration for the car. That aside, I had a lot of fun with the game.

Uffern by IndieDevDan 2020-10-09T17:18:41Z

Nice idea. Really good atmosphere, and the sudden appearance of the monster was great. It is a little dark, but not to the point where it can't be played. I think one thing that might help is some audio/visual indication of when the monster is approaching. I'm incredibly impressed you managed to produce this before the compo deadline.

An Exercise for the Reader by Jordan Kelly 2020-10-11T16:00:08Z

I think this is something that most people here can relate to :). I've also been in a position of having to abandon my entry on a previous jam, so major kudos to you for embracing the failure, and providing a entertaining and enjoyable commentary.

My general thoughts on what I saw on screen: the artwork is absolutely great. I think it's a major plus that you defined your aesthetic, and it ties all the graphics together nicely. From your description of the planned mechanics, I think you have a great core idea worth exploring further without the pressure of time constraints.

One final comment - it may be worth spending a bit of time Godot to unravel its mysteries. I use Godot as my primary engine, and when you've spent a bit of time with it, it becomes very intuitive. It may be worth creating a few more small games/prototypes - when you've tried a few things in a few different genres, you'll start to identify common Godot patterns that you can quickly re-implement for a variety of purposes.

Monkey See by spikedog 2020-10-15T16:52:51Z

Good fun entry :). The copycat mechanic gives an interesting twist, as you have to think through your actions, rather than just driving and shooting. Overall, an interesting spin on the theme.

Stuck Until Discovered by newbieDev 2020-10-08T17:59:46Z

I really like the artwork and music. I think the jump could do with a little fine-tuning as it feels a bit floaty at the moment. It may also be worth moving the first box a bit further away from the start point so the player has an opportunity to hit jump a couple of times and get a feel for the movement. I like the idea of providing clues to the exit point, and that puzzle element may be worth playing with if you keep working on this idea.

Please Just Leave by Noam Blei 2020-10-09T16:42:40Z

I laughed out loud at this. The idea reminded me a bit of The Stanley Parable. I think it could benefit from a few more things to interact with, but overall I had a great time playing it :)

LD49 — Unstable

Un Stable - Escape To Greener Pasture by binroot 2021-10-04T20:21:55Z

I thought this was a fun game :). I like the fact that the mechanics are flexible enough to allow for an escape from the cowboys even when your speed gauge is exhausted, if you react quickly enough. Music fit the concept nicely. Overall, I enjoyed it :)

Bad Ball Blob by huntthewumpus 2021-10-04T20:32:49Z

Fun little game :). I felt you came up with some interesting level designs from your core mechanic, which kept engaged enough to play through and enjoy the whole thing. I agree with other commenters that sound would definitely enhance the experience, but overall I had good fun playing this.

Nuclear Disaster by automatonvx 2021-10-07T18:52:30Z

Absolutely love the art and the music - felt retro in the best possible way. My only piece of feedback is that I think it would be worth adding a couple of seconds grace period upon entering a room before enemies attack: I was finding myself button mashing franticallly against the slime and just getting hit on entry by the flying enemies. However, I feel there is absolutely solid core game here, that you could easily scale on with additional enemies, items, etc. Really enjoyed it.

Unstable Engines by SimonRhys 2021-10-04T15:36:18Z

Fun idea - very, very unforgiving controls/track :). I think that on further iterations, it might be fun to add a health mechanic to give more direct feedback to the player on where they're going wrong (i,e if they shift too far from the track). But overall, cool idea :)

Elemental Storm by Ommadawn 2021-10-07T19:20:36Z

This is one of the most innovative takes on the theme I've seen. The gameplay was really nice, and I felt the music worked really well. It may be worth adding a sound effect/visual cue when clicking an element, just to give that instant feedback to the player's action. Overall, I really enjoyed it :)

Burning Down the House by doomshmuck 2021-10-04T15:24:56Z

Very fun core mechanic, and cheerful music. I agree with the previous commenter that some sort of feedback when hitting the flames would be useful, but aside from that I found everything very intuitive and clear :)

★KICK GUM★ by vlandemart 2021-10-05T23:12:42Z

That was so much fun :). I agree with previous commenters that this would make an absolutely awesome multiplayer game. Really, really enjoyed it.

Unscrambler by Antti Haavikko 2021-10-04T17:02:17Z

I absolutely loved the art style on this. Really fun idea :)

Shoved Serenity by Solah 2021-10-07T19:42:35Z

This is so much fun :). A unique idea, and the art, music and gameplay all complemented each other perfectly. Really enjoyed it.

Driving Blind by MildlyDisturbing 2021-10-09T11:22:29Z

Amazing, chaotic fun. The gameplay was addictive enough to keep me playing through right until the end. One piece of constructive feedback I have is that the order of levels could be adjusted, as I feel like one of the early levels is a little more challenging than the later ones. Overall, I had great fun with this :)

Slime-a-pult by Swen 2021-10-04T17:15:00Z

Really cool idea. Very tricky, but the thought put into the checkpointing system makes it tricky in a fun way, not a frustrating way. Ended up playing it for a long time, so the gameplay has just the right level of addictiveness :)

Cloudfall by Diego Escalante 2021-10-09T11:03:11Z

Really nice game. The controls felt incredibly tight and responsive, which is so, so important for this type of game. I also really liked the evolving soundtrack. A lot of fun!

Gem of Stability by JakobTheQuizGuy 2021-10-09T11:06:37Z

I really enjoyed this game. The character design and art was absolutely wonderful - very clear and charming. I think the difficulty ramped up at just the right pace, giving the player time to adjust while providing a fair challenge. Really cool work!

Polygonal Animal Stacking by Flying Dog Fish 2021-10-04T20:48:08Z

A very nice, relaxing game. I love the art style, and the music fits well with the tone. I did find it quite tricky, and one suggestion might be to prevent another animal spawning if your mouse is already touching an existing one. Overall I liked it, and played it through a couple of times to try and beat my score :)

GONZO ALCHEMY! by kristinamay 2021-10-04T20:42:55Z

Great concept - I've always had a fondness for "mix ingredients to get x" mechanics since Wiz 'n Liz back in the Sega Genesis days :). I agree with some of the other commenters regarding the controls, but overall I enjoyed this - very charming art style, and the music worked well with it :)

Neon Tower by Sli 2021-10-05T22:26:43Z

A simple idea very well executed. Normal mode felt challenging but fair, and everything made sense. The music, sound design and aesthetic all complemented each other nicely. Overall, I had a lot of fun playing this :)

Trick Or Retreat II by Lone_Wolf 2021-10-05T23:17:39Z

A very fun game - really like the art style and the music. Challenging, without being frustrating. Overall, really enjoyed playing it :)

Pale Moon Shone by ditam 2021-10-05T22:48:06Z

I enjoyed the atmosphere of this game - the art style and music selection worked well together, and I found the dialogue engaging. Additionally, I thought the inclusion of the quotes contributed nicely to the experience. One piece of feedback I have is maybe giving clearer indications as to where the dialogue will branch on repeat runs, as I found that wasn't always obvious. However, I played through to the ending, and enjoyed this take on the theme.

Ice Pop! by essarrgee 2021-10-09T11:29:08Z

Lovely art style and fun gameplay. Also, the music worked nicely with it. One idea I did have while playing, is it may be worth introducing an indicator as to where the blue square is on starting the level, as it will allow the player to start herding penguins a little faster, without needing to explore the area first and then backtrack. Overall this was a really cool idea, and I thoroughly enjoyed it :)

Meltdown by LouieJams 2021-10-07T19:08:49Z

Loved the art style. The gameplay was simple but effective, with a very clear core mechanic. The controls felt nice and tight to me. I think some music would definitely heighten the experience, but overall this was a nice, fun game.

Drifter by nyxkn 2021-10-07T19:01:35Z

I really enjoyed this. One thing you absolutely nailed was the fairness of the gameplay - I played through 4 times and got subsequently better results, which means that the mechanic is balanced fairly, as the player's increasing skill is rewarded with better results. One piece of feedback I do have is possibly to introduce a slight bias into the random generation of the shards - on one of my playthroughs, I found that they were consistently rendering below the platforms (leading to higher fuel expenditure), so it might be worth skewing it so there's a slightly higher chance of them being generated above the platforms. Overall I really enjoyed this - also, the sound design really heightened the experience.

Unstable Ground by Squeg Inc. 2021-10-04T15:43:53Z

Very intense game :). I ended up playing that for a long time, so I think the difficulty balance is pretty good - tricky enough to encourage the player to keeo trying, but not frustrating enough to make them rage quit. Overall, I had a good time with this game.

Drunken Master by Cedric86 2021-10-05T22:52:43Z

I enjoyed the great humour in this game. I found it tricky to control, but I guess that is very much by design and works with your take on the theme. One thought I did have is that if you want to raise the difficulty to the next level, you could include a negative penalty for hitting a key when it isn't on screen, as I found it was possible to button mash past the point the prompt had disappeared. But overall, this was a cool take on the theme :)

Gunslinger Glitch by ugly_robot 2021-10-04T17:48:32Z

Amazing idea for a game! Had a nice consistent style, and amazing replayability value. Really enjoyed it :+1

Better Tomorrows by DzejPi 2021-10-05T22:20:26Z

I thoroughly enjoyed this - very well written, and it really drew me in as a player. I felt the art style was effective, and the sound design really contributed to a gripping atmosphere.

Inner Demon by Shaymin 2021-10-04T16:51:20Z

Nice core mechanic - reminded me of vvvvvv. Cool mood/story - interesting little puzzle platformer :)

Float by Cakestorm 2021-10-07T19:26:43Z

Absolutely amazing. I really love the attention to detail in this, from the art to the sound effects to the animation. Absolutely wonderful to play :)

i am a writer by mmisspelling 2021-10-04T16:28:30Z

Nice mood piece/character study. The text was interesting enough to keep me typing until the end, and I felt the music matched the concept well. One piece of practical feedback I have is the length of the first 'ominous disaster' video could be reduced - it went on long enough that I wasn't sure if the game was over or not. But overall, I found this to be an interesting experimental story.

A good start by javve 2021-10-07T19:37:12Z

Simple and sweet. A nice story well told. The art style and music worked perfectly. Really enjoyed it :)

The Madness of Larry Donovan by The Lame Brain 2021-10-04T20:58:51Z

I really enjoyed the atmosphere and mood of this game - I felt the sound was well designed, and the gameplay itself was engaging. One small suggestion I had while playing the second level, is that adding a minimap showing which rooms you've already been in might help, as I found myself going in circles a few times (although admittedly if this is added, it might detract a little from the atmosphere of confusion and uncertainty). Overall, I enjoyed it :)

Pills by shellofagirl 2021-10-04T16:32:03Z

That third level made me laugh out loud :). Entertaining little game.

Crumble by foxtrot-roger 2021-10-07T18:46:08Z

Nice platformer, very much in line with the theme. I like the fact that you were able to create a variety of different levels from the core mechanics which escalated nicely in difficulty. I agree with some previous commenters that the physics could do with a little fine tuning, particularly the jump and slide slowdown. However, I enjoyed the game and played it through to the end :)

Stonx! by Gastar 2021-10-07T19:32:55Z

Really cool take on the theme - it's the first one I've played this jam taking on the idea of an unstable marked. I felt the core gameplay was nice and challenging, with a clear core mechanic. My one piece of feedback is that I think the collision detection could be fine-tuned: I found the character getting stuck in the stores a couple of times. Overall, this was a lot of fun :)

the end by Dennis Magnusson 2021-10-04T16:18:33Z

Really like the music for this - nice and dramatic and fit the mood perfectly. Simple and effective core mechanic. Overall, I had fun with this :)

Spirit Soother by OverloadedPampukin 2021-10-05T23:07:59Z

I really enjoyed the art and the music. I kind of agree with previous commenters that additional feedback when circling the spirits would be great - another thought is it may be worth making the first couple of spirits slightly easier by making them static/less responsive to the physics in order to give the player an opportunity to practice. However, I played it though to the end and enjoyed it :)

Leap Frog! by FALKon2246 2021-10-09T11:12:34Z

A fun game, with a very clearly defined core mechanic. The art was simple but effective. Also incredibly addictive, as I ended up replaying this many times :).

Granny's Porcelain Tower by Njitnelav 2021-10-04T15:31:39Z

Very nicely done (particularly for a first game :)). I found the music loop nice and relaxing, and the art fit the mood of the game well. If you iterate further on this, it might be worth adding in some audio feedback to the player's actions (i.e, a click when succesfully stacking a vase, or a nice big crash sound they fall down :D)

Keep them alive by M A T 2021-10-04T16:02:46Z

Cool idea. Fun core mechanic, easy to understand and play. One suggestion I have is that it might be worth reducing how long it takes before the first server breaks - I ended up hanging around for a while waiting for something to fix :). However, this is a nice idea and I had fun with it.

AnoidBuild by lifedrain 2021-10-04T15:51:17Z

Fun take on breakout in line with the unstable theme. I thought the physics were a lot of fun, and enjoyed playing this. Adding in some sfx to give feedback when you hit the blocks would be great. Overall, I had fun playing this :)
