Super simple but super neat! I ended up spending more time with it than I expected.

Fun little game, especially considering it was made in 3 hours!
Fun game!
Loved it! Super simple concept but great execution. Only thing I was missing is sound effects in game.
Fun little game! Would be nice to have some kind of hint/guide of where an when will a certain circle appear so one can plan accordingly. It was be a bit annoying that I lost a life just because a different color spawned right on top of me or immediately next to me without giving me any heads up. Otherwise, really cool idea for this theme - and done in three hours? Impressive!
@tamail the cirles are totally random (rate, color, position & speed). That said, given the size of the loop, you should be able to cope with some bad colors :wink:
Very nice, considering you only had 3 hours. Some stuff could obv. be improved, for example I feel like the rings sometimes spawn inside of the player.
Super simple, incredible that you made this in 3 hours. But, saying that, I would've liked to hear some sounds and/or music, and have the rings not spawn inside the player at times. the first pico-8 game I've seen, great job! EDIT: It's lose, not loose btw :)
@jorbits & @n8dev > I feel like the rings sometimes spawn inside of the player.
Yeah, I noticed the "bug". I simply forgot to implement to have the rings spacing in the opposite half of the loop :sweat_smile:
> I would’ve liked to hear some sounds and/or music
I'm not that good with audio, that's why I usually try to limit those, as they tend to eat a lot of time for me. I'll try to include some next LD, thanks for the advice!
@thesnide well, if I remember correctly, pico-8 has its own audio editor built in. I'm not sure if you can import sounds, but if you can, this tool called bfxr https://www.bfxr.net/ is encouraged for Ludum Dare. As for music, if you can import files, bosca ceoil https://boscaceoil.net/ is pretty intuitive. Even if you aren't that good at audio, I think audio would've made this game 30 times better, it just adds to the overall atmosphere. I kept expecting there to be some feedback when I collected something (besides just growing bigger). Great game though!
Really enjoyed this!
Didn't quite get the hang of being able to cycle through colours in the right direction.
As far as I remember PICO-8 Limits you to directional buttons and 2 other buttons (?) - so this might not be doable - but a control scheme where each colour is mapped to a particular key might work.
Great fun as it is though - and as others have said, nicely done getting it all together in 3 hours!
Getting stuck between circles while cycling between colors made this pretty fun! All that this needs is a score system.
@aimainiac Indeed. I was planning to add a "speedrun" edition, with the score being the number of frames, and deterministic spawning. But didn't have time. I'll definitely do a post-LD version with most of the good ideas here (sfx, spawns further from the player).
Also, a 2-player was on my mind ;)
This is a great idea that perfectly matches the theme. It's frustrating in the most positive possible way, and I felt motivated to play multiple times in order to beat my previous performance - on that note, some sort of scoreboard to track your best run might be a nice feature for this kind of game. I had a huge amount of fun with it - great little game.
@aimainiac & @thesedatedprince I added a scoring system on a post-ld update @n8dev I added some "coder blips & blops"
@thesnide nice!
A simple but gorgeous game. I loved the art style and the game play is super fun. I struggled to see the colour difference between some of the colours but I think that is a me problem.
quite nice idea for the game. But it has two problems: 1) it's slightly too slow 2) it's still too difficult. I.e. the game ends too quickly.
Fun game, and I managed to win! In contrast to other comments, I think that the difficulty was spot-on and I love the aesthetic. I think a whole game could easily be built on this idea of the player being on a circle!
I enjoyed this a lot. It's great seeing some other Pico-8 games on here. This is a great little mini-game, original idea and game mechanics.
The win is abrupt, but it works, there is challenge, simple but efficient.
I don't know why but this game was so satisfying, gald I see Pico-8 users. It is a fun game with good mechanics, good job.
A fun little idea, and impressive for three hours! I managed to win, but potentially more by luck than anything else!
Little game but it works well, you managed to use efficiently yours 3 hours ahah
I've played both version, and in the post jam you manage to fix all the issue I could have raised (spawning too close to me and missing sfxes).
It's simple but it's visually cute, and the differences in speed gives it a spin, like turning pink but then blue that is faster comes sooner and you have to change again. Maybe having a single button for every color would have helped, even though this way you're "looping" through the colors, so we can say it's more on theme lol
I also like how it gets naturally harder when you're close to the end because you have to manage the bigger size.
Since you're uploading pico8 on itch.io I would like to share a guide I've made to make the game frame a bit prettier (no grey border for example). If you want to give it a shot: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=40036
@toccio94 indeed, the looping of color was intended, but you're the only one that got the reference :disappointed: It also makes it a little more challenging later, when you're quite big. And it makes a "perfect" score very complex.
And, I also saw your post about itch.io, which is from where I landed to your game in the first place. I don't really bother with changing theme or config. I was used to do that, tweaking my environment in very fine details, but then got old, and went with the defaults. The nice part being that itchio has rather sensible one in the first place, so it makes it very bearable. :wink:
That said, I admit that it can be made better, and your article is nice take on it, I'm just too lazy to be bothered with it :bear:
