This is sweet!

raffe 2018-04-23 13:25

I love it when the character smiles :) Very cool game and you have done very nice job in the level design! GG

thesedatedprince 2018-04-23 13:36

I really enjoyed this - great mood and enjoyable to play.

nash 2018-04-23 14:15

Pretty fun fusion of platformer and FPS. I was happily surprised how well they worked together.

The best part of this game was it's mood. I really liked the atmosphere and there is some kind of tension between you with the gun and the princess.

Level design was very good taking into account this was a marathon game!

I only rated art and music for the part that I thought was made by you. They were ok and fit the theme.

malobil 2018-04-23 14:16

Really cool concept =)

leonard 2018-04-23 14:51

Cool concept ! Great feeling. The mix is really good. But pity graphics :/ This is not your fault huh ^^

velocity7 2018-04-23 15:05

LOL its called programmer's art dude

roy 2018-04-23 15:15

The level of the dark room is really a life saver, it's quite fun! I can do the "leap of faith" in it. though the princess is a bit scary, like the princess's weeping sound

velocity7 2018-04-23 15:21

Oh cmon man. She is so cute!

jaime-paz-lopes 2018-04-23 16:18

I got stuck for sometime looking for the key hahaha i didnt think it was possible to break it

belga54 2018-04-23 16:25

I liked this FPS + platformer combination, seems they are compatible lol. I liked this calm music. I loved also the art style. So, pretty good game.

theboss12 2018-04-23 16:56

Nice game. Good combination of themes. Music ok. Art could be better

2018-04-23 17:16

Unique integration of FPS and dungeon platformer I must say! +cheesy graphics +quirky music +intricate story +ahhh my eyes when I saw princess.

velocity7 2018-04-23 17:26

@Jaime Paz Lopes were you able to solve the dark room level?

persijn 2018-04-23 19:18

:smile_cat: This little game gave me a good smile at the end. The graphics could use some improvement. Story telling and mood was spot on :fox:

2018-04-24 05:03

Nice concept. I really like the way how the whole story has been put up. Cool

2018-04-24 09:45

amazing stuff

zak-zeddam-zakaria 2018-04-24 13:54

cant wait to try it out this is our game feel free to try it and rate it https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/incompatible-rally

isopoly 2018-04-24 14:01

That was pretty awesome! The first game I actually finished  Great work!!

velocity7 2018-04-24 14:44

@isopoly i am glad that you finished and I believe that you were relieved after saving the princess

isopoly 2018-04-24 14:47

indeed I was! @Velocity7 I believe she is too, after being accidentally shot 3 times lol

velocity7 2018-04-24 14:52

@isopoly hahhahaa. Oh you are the first one to shoot her. You are not kind to women hahahaha. Try to kill her and see what happens then

flatterp 2018-04-24 16:15

Neat idea, and you executed it well! It was nice having a definitive end to the game as well, short and sweet. Could be a fun two player arcade game.

velocity7 2018-04-24 16:17

@Flatterp thank you for the suggestion. Two player is actually there, Yourself and the Princess isn't it?

travis-w-hendrix 2018-04-24 17:30

Very cool! It's love you're actually playing an FPS and platformer simultaneously.

drell 2018-04-24 23:21

Really enjoyed the the genre mash up! Good idea :D

honest-dan 2018-04-24 23:41

This is a nice concept and it is clear you put effort into the story and conveying emotion and how the character felt. It had some interesting mechanics (breaking stuff with items inside, enemies, darkness). A few bits of critical feedback (don't take it personally, I say it to try help!). The shame with this two genre combo is that it actually functions like a run and gunner game. If you imagine the princess had a gun, and there was no first person gun on screen shooting, it would function exactly the same in reality. Secondly, it was very distracting as a player to have such contrasting art style. It doesn't matter how good or bad the art is, but it should be consistent - your seemed to mix different styles, resolutions, some really fancy fire particle effects - and when all combined it just felt very disconnected! I enjoyed the story, the dark level was fun, and glad the princess was okay again!

blackoptics8 2018-04-25 02:14

oops sorry princess! (don't know why that was the first thing i tried once i got a gun) The gun has some missing pixels and as honest dan was saying conflicting art styles really detract from a game, I would have rather seen the art of the platforms and items and effects made by you. The platforming feels a bit floaty and if you get up next to a wall and spam the jump you get shot up into the air (was really fun to mess with though.. was trying to find a place I could try to fly out of the game but you closed it all in =.=') there was a sentence or two that didn't make sense but after a few times messing around I saved her lol good job ;D

velocity7 2018-04-25 03:32

Thank you guys for your critical feedback. I knew that the art style was inconsistent because I made the art for the first time and just couldn't come up with any for a dungeon so I just picked something that could fit. @Honest Dan the particle effect was bad for the pit because i scaled it LOL. @blackoptics8 Haha I knew someone would try to make her fly and my sis told me that she was flying. Its the tilemap that was doing it I don't know why. The main thing I focused on was the mood and emotion of the game and I think I made you guys smile at the end

iak 2018-04-25 07:16

This is cool. I like it. Collision detection was a bit awkward at times and the > buttons are a bit too small, but the combination of 2D platforming with a shooter is really compelling. You could probably expand on this idea pretty well in the future, too.

velocity7 2018-04-25 10:00

@Iak yup I'm looking forward to it

ursagames 2018-04-25 18:40

I enjoyed the take on the theme. Never been a huge fan of "darkness" areas, but giving players a map of what do beforehand was actually a good take on it and definitely lessened the frustration those areas typically generate. Nice job!

velocity7 2018-04-25 19:39

@ursagames I am glad you enjoyed that and I hope she gave u a smile at the end

grewoss 2018-04-26 12:33

Great concept :) The first seconds gave me a binding of isaac vibe. overall great game :)

reality-blind 2018-04-26 12:42

You have an interesting mechanic and ambience here, go find an artist buddy and make it even better for post LD ! šŸ˜„

croewens 2018-04-26 13:00

Short & sweet game. Could be fun for 2 players as well.

What I loved * Combination of 2D platforming and a shooter was executed really well * The story was compelling * Ambience

My Thoughts * Collision detection was a bit awkward * Contrasting art style  which caused the game to feel a little bit disconnected * The mood & emotion were on point though!

I’d love for you to review my submission as well.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/keyboard-warrior

szabe 2018-04-26 14:22

Nice, the mood is great, and I like that there was a narrative and some emotion in the story! About the theme... I am not sure, but I don't think this is merging any themes, this is a run and gun 2D platformer, the fps mechanic isn't an fps mechanic.

velocity7 2018-04-26 14:58

@szabe have you played Doom?

velocity7 2018-04-26 14:59

@Reality Blind I seriously need an artist. Maybe I can find one here

velocity7 2018-04-26 15:00

@croewens The physics is awkward because it was my first time using Tilemaps in Unity and they made it do it

szabe 2018-04-26 15:08

@Velocity7 Yep, I have.

legavroche 2018-04-26 15:11

The mood, storytelling and the music are great. fps mechanics needs to merge with 2d platformer more. Who needs a "hero" when the princess has a gun haha(who put it there at the first place o_O)!

velocity7 2018-04-26 15:44

@legavroche Someone. They put it there. Maybe You can investigate that in part 2 Lol

r4ndomthunder 2018-04-26 16:09

I liked this combination platform + FPS. I liked this calm music. I loved also the art style. So, pretty good game.

fa.png

If you want you can try my game on this link: [Scarry](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/scarry)

velocity7 2018-04-26 16:14

@R4ndomThunder Your game was the first where I rated. :)

lemonbalmgames 2018-04-27 20:11

Very innovative game. You took the theme and you run with it. Numbness is really short and sweet and I had a lot of fun with it. Great job!

velocity7 2018-04-28 07:18

@LemonBalmGames Thanks man. I really appreciate that

borys 2018-04-28 08:58

A really good mix. I like the sound in this game, very atmospheric. Well done!

captainpilot 2018-04-28 09:57

Interesting combination. You definitely need some crosshairs as the gun doesn't give an indication that you're actually aiming up/down in addition to the left/right movement of the gun. Also really annoying level design in the first level if you don't have a key, you have to retrace the entire level.

hypp 2018-04-28 12:31

Nice game and idea. I think that it was a bit hard to see where I was aiming with the gun. Great audio, you could really hear her fright.

velocity7 2018-04-28 13:54

@CaptainPilot I think that's what a clever level design is. You go right as the first thing in your mind and forget the key that is just a few steps left. Yeah I need some adjustments for the crosshairs. Will solve this one as well

langotriel 2018-04-28 15:48

This took me back to the days of 2000 free games discs on Mac OS 9 in the 90's. The weird combination of clashing art styles weirdly enough make it extra retro feeling. In general though, this ain't my kind of thing and I do think it needs some more polish.

spacemonkey 2018-04-28 18:49

I really enjoyed playing your game until the end. The mood is present and consistent the whole time. Music and scene transitions are fitting the game too. I also loved your mix of genres ! It feels good to play a platformer with keyboard and mouse. If I had to name one thing to improve it would be the character controller. The fall seems a bit too slow and the controls don't feel precise enough I would say. However your game does not demand a lot of precision with the jump so it was not a major problem. I also noticed that you can't jump when you stand on a barrel, but again, it does not break the game.

Very well done for a one-man team ! And your first LD submission ! I'm looking forward for your next entry.

velocity7 2018-04-28 21:19

@SpaceMonkey I really really appreciate your thoughts. Looking forward to improve in my future game jams

robowarrior1982 2018-04-28 22:26

The atmosphere is really good and the story is nice! The mixture works well! Maybe you can improve the graphics after JAM! Good job!

cristiano-m-garcia 2018-04-29 02:56

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

I hope you continue with the project.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/witchs-escape

bentekiller 2018-04-29 12:11

Wait so I was the one using the gun and not the princess, though I still controlled the princess, or did I tell her where to go! And who and where is the player? I enjoyed the sweet little story.

xoidberg 2018-04-29 13:05

I killed myself

velocity7 2018-04-29 13:12

@xoidberg it wasn't that much emotional LOL. Yeah you can kill your princess but if you end the game, you'll get emotional like her

mr-blue 2018-04-29 13:51

I liked it! Programmer art ftw :)

moonlightbomber 2018-05-03 01:20

The jump physics is kinda iffy. Hope you can fix that for an eventual commercial/full release.

nuthen 2018-05-03 03:36

I liked the setting by the low amount of light in the final level. It really scared me when enemies appeared! But I was thankful for the map, that was really cool to see. It was annoying to click the text boxes, I was thankful for the ones I could skip by pressing a key.

velocity7 2018-05-03 18:53

@moonlightbomber yeah I know and I would definitely fix it

velocity7 2018-05-03 18:53

@Nuthen That's why I designed that level. Did u finish the game?

nilstastic 2018-05-03 19:16

I might just be in a particularly good mood, but i very much enjoyed the mixed graphics. Floaty physics aside i felt that this was a good mix of genres, and protecting the princess felt fun (perhaps the pixel-tears helped). Good work!

invader 2018-05-03 19:17

Ouch... You can actually kill the princess... But what can you do when those creepy rabbits keep pushing her!

ramza 2018-05-03 19:19

I liked the concept a lot. I thought it was well done as far as the controls and mechanics, and it fit the theme well. Maybe you could add a reload for the gun? Have princess pick up ammo for you? Solid entry!

estacaomarte 2018-05-03 19:27

Amazing to see how every game in this JAM is unique in one way or another! :D

argowen 2018-05-03 19:30

Really enjoyed, was so close to just killing the princess instead but alas I opted to save her lol. Would appreciate a review of mine also. I just need 2 more to get over the 20 threshold: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/snakes-and-ladders-a-texted-based-adventure-game

corbak 2018-05-03 19:34

Its a nice little game, you tried as much as you can to convey some emotons and being able to add some gameplay too. Well done for it.

peterson-marques 2018-05-03 19:46

Good game! perfect in the theme of LJ41. Adding a crosshair to the gun would make it more elegant, but perfect. See my game, pliss: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/food-truck-race

lotus 2018-05-03 19:51

Well it is really... dark...

n00b 2018-05-03 19:59

To be honest when I started this game I didn't really like the concept. However, the concept did not reflect my final view of this game. The contrast between the graphical styles of the princess and everything else in this game actually worked in its favor. And while the gameplay was way to simplistic to carry this game through an epic hour or more adventure it was perfect for a game of this size (it took me about 3 minutes to finish the entire game). There were some flaws in the overall design. The rules of the game seem to be inconsistent at times. For instance, I was able to shoot all the boxes and barrels in the second area but I was not able to do this later in the game. Also I am not sure if it was a problem with the collision detection or if it was a legitimate feature but I got caught on a wall as I was jumping down. I was able to use this to climb back up the wall so it may have been an actual feature. Overall I feel it was a well crafted and enjoyable game.

jk5000 2018-05-03 20:07

Good: - The idea is simple and inserting. - The sounds and music is pretty good. - The mood and story is interesting.

What could have been better: - The game mechanics is fine, but I believe there could have been done more with them. - The graphics is not bad, but it is a bit messy.

puppetmaster 2018-05-03 20:48

Cool genre combination. The atmosphere is really good, especially because of the dark music. Great game! enjoyed playing it. Keep it up!!

I'd appreciate it if you'd find time to play my game. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/astropover

mau 2018-05-03 20:50

Good game, but I shot the princess so many times... XD

milo87 2018-05-03 22:01

I didn't know you could shoot the princess! :anguished:

But seriously, that's a good game for a jam. It had some surprising mechanics like the physics-enabled barrels that really showed polish (although I couldn't jump while standing on the barrel which felt a bit wonky)

It had a great atmosphere from the somber music and sobbing noises!

macdoom 2018-05-04 07:27

Super cool genres combination! It really feels good and combines really well the different mechanics. Nice mood and dark story. Graphics could have been more carefully designed. Congratulations!

Come and try my game! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/tactical-hydra

lukesta 2018-05-04 16:25

Wow your game is really a wierd combination of two genres. Was fun and interesting to play, the paper/map confused me a bit but I guess it wasn't important to undertand it to finish the game

haharo 2018-05-04 16:49

Very nice, I feel "freedom" since I can shoot the princess lol! The sound design is pretty good, make a mood for the game. Shooting and jumping feel so confortable after few seconds of game.

A very nice submit, keep doing the good job!

ratherjolly 2018-05-05 02:54

Well done! That was a good idea and brilliant execution! A+ work!

velocity7 2018-05-05 07:16

@Ratherjolly @haharo @Lukesta Thanks Guys! Hope it gave a smile on your faces at the end.

arche-san 2018-05-05 13:26

Pretty nice concept! The combination between fps and platformer works well here. Perhaps I'll add recharge + more aggressive enemies for gun to increase the difficulty and focus on princess gameplay. But it's already fun like this. Good job! :)

velocity7 2018-05-05 13:50

@arche-san Thank You for your feedback. Now I am thinking of going with this concept and build something huge with more polish.

nilc 2018-05-05 14:26

Nice idea! I like the gameplay, but art can be improved :) Also maybe it's a good idea to add some local multiplayer here? First person plays as a princes and can't attack. Second person plays as FPS hero - shooting from different type of weapons, throws health packs, helping with traps, etc.

velocity7 2018-05-05 16:21

@NilC Nice idea man. Writing it down

doubledragonbimmy 2018-05-06 07:44

This is an impressively complete solo entry, complete with nice music, sfx, graphics, and a few different levels. My recommendation if you take this forward is to add some more platforming challenges especially if you could incorporate the shooting and the platforming together, like shooting your character for a double jump, or clearing enemies mid jump. There is a lot of potential here!

velocity7 2018-05-06 07:46

@DoubleDragonBimmy Thank you for your feedback. I look forward to make it something big

rombus 2018-05-06 17:54

Love the genres you've picked up, It'll also work nice with a more frantic level design. Sadly the web player for unity doesn't reproduced any sounds :\ don't know why and it's not the first game that I see this.

Congrats on the entry!

velocity7 2018-05-06 18:01

@Rombus you should try the windows build because you really need to hear the sound dude

kittyinthestudio 2018-05-06 18:20

Awesome! :D. I do believe that the only issue is some of the platforming bugs. Like being able to jump on walls. Other than that. Amazing! You can really expand and make this something big.

zombie-virals 2018-05-06 19:59

I've only seen one other game mix FPS and Platform, but it was in a completely different way, I didn't know what to expect before playing this, but I'm very impressed! You did a great job man! <3

rosypenguin 2018-05-06 21:47

Really liked the way you combined the two genres in a way I haven't seen yet. I agree with others in the need for a crosshair on the cursor to indicate that the gun aims at where the mouse is aimed. I can see this expanded with more complex level designs, more weapons, and enemy types. Great work!

poio 2018-05-08 12:54

I'm a monster. I like how the letters mix when you chain shoot the princess. xD

velocity7 2018-05-08 18:14

@Poio You really are a monster. Why did you do that? :D

poio 2018-05-08 18:38

Haha. I did the game the rightful way first, don't worry. I dunno what triggered me to try the friendly fire afterwards. Curiosity maybe ? Am i still a monster ? I guess I am. XD

Oh by the way, you can still avenge her by trying my game ! (Is there a flaw in my logic there ? Can't pinpoint it :D) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/asimovs-breakout

velocity7 2018-05-09 07:03

@Poio I am gonna destroy your game buddy. :imp:

invixel 2018-05-10 10:13

I am conflicted, the audio was good but the ending theme was from the asset pack so i don't know if that should subtract from my grades or not. I guess i will just rate the part that you actually made (which i presume is everything except the ending, right?)

velocity7 2018-05-10 13:05

@Invixel Yes! I didn't made the music and assets of the ending

mza 2018-05-10 14:19

Great game. The controls were great. Really enjoyed the gunplay (even shooting my own character). Personally, I found the game a bit easy. Other than that, execution is great!

velocity7 2018-05-11 13:48

@MZA It was made easy so that everyone can play and get the mood out of it. I hope you enjoyed the mood

luckylars 2018-05-11 21:47

The enemies felt a bit underwhelming. I never felt that my beloved princess were in any real danger because my amazing gun worked almost too great. Besides that I liked the perspective were I kind of held the gun. It played nice together with the story of the game.

paveldlouhy 2018-05-12 08:38

Great atmosphere! Good job. :-)

randomhuman 2018-05-13 11:34

That's a pretty cool combination of genres. A good improvement would be to have more and faster paced enemies so that dodging and quick aiming would become essential. The enemies that are there are a bit plodding and easy to pick off - I basically just parked the princess while I dealt with them and then carried on again.

I'm not sure what to do about the mix of prefab and new assets. The audio in particular does create a good mood though, and I like the transitions and stuff in the intro.

velocity7 2018-05-13 14:47

I've seen many players struggling to kill the enemies but you killed them in a smart way. You're a pro gamer dude. ;-)

acuity 2018-05-14 07:15

Nice job - this was a pretty fun take on the theme! The zoom in effect with the princess crying at the end of each level was pretty amusing.

honey 2018-05-15 17:32

Nice one! Though the platforming feels a bit floaty and also has the unity well known "wall stand" issue (just literally try to stand on the wall and you'll see), still the music set pretty good mood and some visual effects were very well done! Overall I enjoyed the experience, thank you for that! :)

velocity7 2018-05-15 18:55

Thank You @honey. Oh that's unity's well known issue? I didn't knew that

rebecca-kremer 2018-05-17 01:45

Hehe I finally got to play your game! (Better late than never ;P) I really liked the idea and the part with the map and the darkness was very good! I felt like I really had to focus to remember and get through. The assets were a little mish-mashed together in terms of style and I guess that's because some were from a previous project? The music was spooky too. :) There were a few bugs, which others have already told you about, but I didn't find they impacted the gameplay. I would have liked it if there was a gun reticle to see where you were pointing precisely but I guess the arrow was fine. Overall very good!

honey 2018-07-02 18:54

@velocity7 yep, the built-in colliders and physics engine is very prone to that due to the default calculation of collision so it's probably better to use custom raycasting or at least fiddle a bit with colliders. But custom raycasting is the least expensive workaround as far as I know (e.g. sphere collider would be much heavier).
