LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Jungle Rumble by masterkrepta 2018-05-03T16:58:08Z

I managed to trick the AI by running behind a log and ducking out from around it on my turn... The other gorilla just ended up standing still letting me chuck bananas at him!

Overall a very good game for the timeframe, though. I was impressed by the environment

Black Jack Racing by tgiant 2018-04-24T21:49:05Z

Good idea that translates surprisingly well to an enjoyable game  It's actually quite compelling! I like the added touch that the drivers are little Jokers, and some nice flair with the menu animations.

Eldritch Cuisine by LoHii 2018-04-24T01:14:03Z

I'd love to play this but you didn't ship it with the UnityPlayer.dll file so I can't D: Can you fix the download zip?

Eldritch Cuisine by LoHii 2018-04-24T17:30:34Z

Loved it! Thanks for fixing the d/l. At one point I put the right ingredients in the kettle to make the... eye, tentacle thing, but got roasted toes out? Other than that, it's a really solid effort. Loved the art and the atmospheric noises and music.

I also made a horror-themed cooking game, maybe check it out? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/hells-kitchen

Scrolls by 100th_Coin 2018-04-24T18:09:08Z

I liked the graphics and the audio. Found the regular gameplay went an acceptable pace, but managing the inventory was a bit frantic! I guess that was the point  I liked the approach you took with the towns. You buy, then sell, then pick up a quest that (hopefully) matches what you bought.

Interesting take on the theme executed well

Sneaky Beats by gamesplusjames 2018-04-25T20:35:19Z

This game has a huge amount of polish. And it's a rhythm game where the audio actually syncs up with the action! Huzzah! Loved the concept and the execution.

Gravity Chess by CaptainPilot 2018-04-24T17:35:29Z

This is a seriously good entry. Simple to pick up but hard to master, as all good puzzle games should be.

Infinite Typer by theamazingb 2018-04-24T18:19:23Z

Loved the game and the graphics + SFX. The only thing I noticed is that your left and right movement seems to be in world-space? If I turned to the right and then typed "left" it shunted me backwards...

Overall I enjoyed it, though. Showed real polish.

Raceman by Jose Pedro Dias 2018-05-02T21:09:48Z

This was a surprisingly good match! Quite challenging to control. I think the enemies are a bit bugged, though... They crashed into the wall at one point and stopped working

Progress by spelos 2018-04-24T17:47:11Z

For 18 hours this has a surprising amount of polish. The pop-up messages with high-scores and the bursting encouragement words (plus emojis) really added an edge. Excellent game!

Opposing Worlds by Particles GameStudio 2018-05-02T21:14:01Z

For a game made in 72 hours this has a lot of graphical polish (considering the intentional clashing styles!), but I have to echo the rest of the reviews that say the platforming mechanics could use some work. Quite often I'd end up running place and have to jump my way around...

I liked the boomerang, though. Have a small degree of control made landing jumping hits on moving enemies very satisfying!

Make up and drive by bldr 2018-04-24T22:16:15Z

That was genuinely hilarious. At one point I attempted to pick up the eyeliner and instead found a handgun and then rolled my car on to its roof in surprise. 10/10 would commit horrendous road-based atrocities again

Hangover Kitchen by Lewis Quaife 2018-04-24T21:41:49Z

Interesting take on the Root Beer Tapper-esque game mechanics! Quite challenging to look out for the right ingredients and shoot them at the right people.

I also made a cooking-themed game. Maybe take a look? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/hells-kitchen

Enjoyable submission, well done

CarD^2riving by Derek Brouwer 2018-04-24T22:04:52Z

Fun game  At one point I ended up at a 45 degree angle and had to shuffle back and forth a bit to get back on track...

Interesting take on the theme. I particularly liked the dual use of the cards - it felt like it made it more tactical!

Darkade by hatchet 2018-04-24T17:59:04Z

Alright, I wasn't expecting a game of that depth from an LD entry. I was very pleasantly surprised! Definitely going to come back and play that again - gotta get further!

Numbness by Velocity7 2018-05-03T22:01:32Z

I didn't know you could shoot the princess! :anguished:

But seriously, that's a good game for a jam. It had some surprising mechanics like the physics-enabled barrels that really showed polish (although I couldn't jump while standing on the barrel which felt a bit wonky)

It had a great atmosphere from the somber music and sobbing noises!

GUN-HOCKEY by isopoly 2018-04-24T17:43:56Z

Really good fun. I thought the accuracy was a little off (but maybe I just suck ) With a bit more polish and "juice" I think it would be a legitimately fun game.

Typewriter Dungeon by Jaime Paz Lopes 2018-04-24T22:26:21Z

I liked the idea, and the thought you put into the word placement (making the little intro text a part of the tutorial, for example) really showed a lot of care went into it.

As others have said the game gets a little old quite quickly, though... It's a solid foundation that just needs juicing up a bit!

Mud and Pixels by Hare Software 2018-04-24T21:34:28Z

Very enjoyable game. I think it might translate well to a mobile app if given some more polish? Perhaps expanding on the UI to give more granular controls, as other posters have said.

Good execution

Tactical Texting by Braden Bodily 2018-04-24T22:23:03Z

I liked this game in theory, but in practice it was a little hard to tell what was going on... I scanned a tank to the South, so tried to "move south" but got command not recognised. I then turned 180 degrees and scanned again... still saw a tank to the south.

I think the main problem with the other user's input is that your text doesn't appear in the box when you type. Is it black text on a black background?

I think this has the potential to be a really fun tactical game with a bit more polish!

Snakes and Ladders: A Texted Based Adventure Game by argowen 2018-04-24T21:56:49Z

I actually had a lot of fun with this  The descriptions of the squares, coupled with the console output added a surprisingly existential feel to the whole game.

Plus major props for a well implemented theme - text adventure + boardgame is a pretty incompatible mix!

Sword step by DarthWaxus 2018-04-24T16:05:57Z

Great implementation of the theme. Taking the incompatible and making it work was key. RIP headphone users ;)

EDIT: Obligatory https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/hells-kitchen

Dungeon Typist by the_noffs 2018-05-02T21:05:01Z

Nice game. Simple graphics that did the job, nice adherence to the theme! Lack of sound and music is the only thing that let it down, but I know as well as anyone how sound/music end up being sacrificed in a game jam...

PLYDRIDIE - Multitasking Racing Flappy Game by GUI 2018-05-04T16:43:09Z

This is such a great contribution to the theme. It's a shame you didn't ask to get rated on graphics because I thought they were very well done considering the time limits.

+1 for a WebGL support too!

Way Out by Victor Lima 2018-05-02T17:59:42Z

Fun game! I thought the raycasting on the hits could be a little more accurate but that's the only criticism I could think of  Other than that it was a very well polished game.

Hell's Kitchen by Milo87 2018-04-24T18:00:55Z

@Lazzor Yeah, I suspected the controls would let me down... They're a bit buggy at times. Admittedly I tested it chiefly on the xbox controller since that's what I have. On keyboard/mouse, arrow keys move and left click to pick up/activate, right click to drop. Thanks for the feedback!

Hell's Kitchen by Milo87 2018-04-24T18:11:01Z

@Bhavin Alas, sound is always the thing I sacrifice... If I had more time I would have loved to have added some. That and change that freaking pink sphere for an actual brain  Thanks for the feedback!

Hell's Kitchen by Milo87 2018-04-24T18:20:03Z

@isopoly Good idea. I'll put one up tonight! Thanks for the feedback!

Hell's Kitchen by Milo87 2018-04-24T18:22:21Z

@Elbcore yeah, if I were to polish this game I would definitely work on the controls first. And you're right about the plates! I added the visuals to the pot and didn't have to time to add it to the plates... Thanks for the feedback!

Hell's Kitchen by Milo87 2018-04-24T21:30:55Z

@hatchet Thanks for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed the brain

Hell's Kitchen by Milo87 2018-04-24T21:58:25Z

@lewis-quaife thanks for the feedback  You know how when you're working on a game and think to yourself "I've got it basically working, I'll come back and tidy it up later" and then never do? Well that happened with the movement... It could stand to be a lot less twitchy, for sure.

Hell's Kitchen by Milo87 2018-04-25T08:04:27Z

@Jaime-Paz-Lopes yeah the lack of food on the plate is something I really wanted to add but didn't have time... Thanks for the feedback!

Hell's Kitchen by Milo87 2018-04-26T08:52:16Z

Thanks @gamesplusjames - I've since uploaded a fix which resolves the lack of new servings spawning. Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for the exposure on Twitch!

Hell's Kitchen by Milo87 2018-05-03T21:54:15Z

@CalebLewis @Triastase Thanks for the feedback, guys. (Sorry it took so long, @CalebLewis) Yes the controls are really meant for a gamepad, but Unity default controls also support keyboard/mouse so it's possible (just not very useful, as you found out...)

2 things I want to add to improve the overall feel is more feedback from the cooking (i.e. the bar doesn't just go red and then eventually disappear) and a visual indication of chopping (like a bar that counts up when you chop).

Hell's Kitchen by Milo87 2018-05-04T08:19:39Z

Thanks @Smiling Cat Entertainment! I'm particularly happy with how the recipes turned out, so thanks  Of course if I were to expand on the game I'd love to add more creative names!
