This is a seriously good entry. Simple to pick up but hard to master, as all good puzzle games should be.

gregwlyons 2018-04-24 17:39

Nice puzzle game that has inspiration from chess and gravity.

maxime-catel 2018-04-24 17:40

Really nice concept.

paul-avallone 2018-04-24 17:42

I like the concept of gravity having an effect on chess a lot. If you could figure out a way to expand it so you can play a full game of chess with gravity that would be really cool.

helpcomputer 2018-04-24 17:43

Really cool idea, kept me playing to see what interesting combinations would come up. Well done!

obachuka 2018-04-24 17:47

Fun puzzle game. Easy to learn, and some of the puzzles really got me thinking.

I didn't get at first that chess pieces couldn't move into tiles that weren't designed for them. Maybe instead of not highlighting the square, highlight it with red or something?

seanale 2018-04-24 18:27

This is a great game! I love the idea. It reals does combine two genres together to make it's own really cool thing. It reminds me of a lot of browser games I'd play in middle school or something - but innovative and new! Really great.

kovakomes 2018-04-24 19:00

Awesome game. After some sfx, vfx, and in-game tutorial; you would have yourself a hell of a mobile game.

yetman 2018-04-24 23:51

Awesome idea. It was so fun that I played through most of the puzzles without noticing. Now I am stuck on one puzzle so I will try again tomorrow. The levels are really well designed and the mechanics is very easy to pick up.

steffo 2018-04-25 21:58

Awesome puzzle game!

Add a small tutorial, some sound, improve a bit the graphics (especially the knight) and you have a really good game!

simon-rahnasto 2018-04-25 22:24

I need you to make this into an app yesterday! I want to play this on the bus as I commute. Fantastic entry, and amazing level/puzzle design.

fashionbatman 2018-04-25 23:37

This is an awesome puzzle game and I want to play more of it. You took a simple set of rules and made something great. Good job!

maduke 2018-04-26 04:19

This is amazing. Congratulations on making a game with solid mechanics and nice and clean graphics. The only thing that would make this better is sound. Game play is unique and engaging and fits the theme very well.

whirlwind 2018-04-26 04:28

Fantastic puzzle game. Had to actually think on some of these. One thing I noticed is that pieces like the bishop could move through walls; not sure if this was intended. It make sense for knights to jump walls, but the others should have to go around. Also shouldn't pawns only be able to move diagonally if they are attacking?

captainpilot 2018-04-26 09:06

Thanks everyone for your comments. I'm definitely considering making a bigger release in the future probably on mobile.

@Whirlwind Yeah, I was undecided what to do with the pawns, as they can technically take pieces diagonally and it opened up the puzzle space a little more. I might revisit that decision when I come to expand the concept into a full app.

Really cool idea! I included it in my Ludum Dare 41 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHFQFxHlU6Y

captainpilot 2018-04-26 14:17

@Jupiter_Hadley Thanks for including me in the video. Looks like you picked up the mechanics pretty quickly :D

khofez 2018-04-26 17:52

Man! thats a very interesting game, I liked it a lot, good job!

aruculadomal 2018-04-26 18:03

wow really good! the game got me really engaged, I was planning to just take a quick look, but I played it entirely! Amazing idea and really good execution!

natpat 2018-04-26 18:10

I really enjoyed that. The difficulty ramps up really well, and new concepts are introduced at just the right time - which is really impressive for a Jam game. I played all of the levels - Level 17 stumped me the most, but I finally managed to get it. I don't know if you were supposed to be able to move the bishop in the final level through the stone block, as it made the puzzle fairly easy (I had quite a few moves left). The graphics were simple, but that was all that was needed - and it could have been nice to have some sort of fail screen when you run out of moves and a success screen, but those would have just been polish on top of an already good entry. I second what other people have said - it already feels like a really good mobile game!

ragtagradical 2018-04-26 18:31

classy little puzzle game. Reminds me how bad I am at chess and forward thinking.

teklarit 2018-04-26 20:37

Cool game! 5 star!

secretpocketcat 2018-04-26 21:35

Great game, everything felt very intuitive except the stone blocks. At first I thought I couln't pass through those at all, but then again, lvl 15 meant it had to be possible, so the point is probly moot :smile_cat:

outbreak 2018-04-26 21:50

This was fantastic. I loved the concept, would love to see this fleshed out and turned into a full game! Great entry!

stending 2018-04-26 22:20

Saw the game on Togis stream, and it was really cool! The puzzle are really well made, the difficulty progression looks cool, and the overall concept is flawless!

Would love to see a post-jam version with more puzzle, and bigger grid?

Anyway, really cool entry :D

solnak 2018-04-26 22:28

Awesome game it has the potential for a good phone puzzle game i think !

morrilet 2018-04-27 00:28

This was surprisingly difficult! I think you struck a nice balance between teaching the player and challenging them, and the idea was really unique, but I wish there was audio! Even some clicks and clacks for sound effects would be super welcome. Nice job on making an entertaining and mechanically sound game, though! Woo!

arron-fowler 2018-04-27 09:42

Excellent. It kept me gripped for a long time. Congratulations

minibobbo 2018-04-27 15:02

This was a great game. I really liked the puzzle progression and the use of the standard chess pieces and moves made it approachable but the addition of the gravity made for some really cool puzzles.

Was it difficult to come up with some of the later puzzles? I was trying to think of how I would design some of them and I have no idea.

Very well done.

croewens 2018-04-27 18:19

Hey man. Really fun game!

 What I loved * Challenging, but not frustrating! * Great levels

:thought_balloon: My thoughts: * This could be a great mobile game! * UI needs some work if you're going to be working on this post-jam * How many levels could you possibly make without it being to difficult?

Really well made! I'd love to see a post jam version but 5/5 for me!

gastricsparrow 2018-04-28 01:03

Saw this on stream and had to go play for myself! Probably one of my favorites this jam, wonderful job!

Edit: Now that I've played through I'd personally go with just white pieces for the jam, black pieces are a whole nother layer of complexity that's hard to balance. Still you did a great job for the time you had!

captainpilot 2018-04-28 01:25

@GastricSparrow @croewens + Everyone else Thanks for the feedback

@minibobbo I start with a specific aim in mine, e.g. I want this level to involve the player taking a piece by gravity. I want this level to involve stacking... Once I have a concept in mind I then try and think how to get the pieces into that position and expand from there.

acoto87 2018-04-28 01:29

Really interesting game. I think there is more that can be discover here. Great job!

frederika 2018-04-28 01:39

Very good game! Like Connect 4 with Chess. I liked it very much, the only issues were the bugs. :)

human 2018-04-28 02:17

Realy nice take on chess. Levels are smart. Realy need to think before making any move.

velocity7 2018-04-28 14:27

The orientation is not fitting on the browser support. But the idea is really good. First of a kind I've seen that. Nice idea and the game is cool.

pkenney 2018-04-30 02:08

Very nice puzzle entry here. I played the whole thing, and felt like the pace of introducing new concepts was right on. I had a good mix of feeling like I was smart, and getting a bit stumped here and there as well. The only time the game lost me was the first level with the night, not because of the new move it was introducing, but because I had not really learned the rules about "opposite colors can take" and "you must fill each goal but not have any left over" -- the prior levels were supposed to teach me that but I kind of missed the point. I referred back to the listed rules that once, and I was off again through the end.

Interface was slick and did what I needed, if I could have added one convenience, it would be that I could toggle selection of a piece. Sometimes I felt like I wanted to unselect something I'd dabbled with moving but decided against.

Overall very impressive exploring of an interesting idea -- well done!

cristiano-m-garcia 2018-04-30 03:07

Good job! Cool game!

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

I hope you continue with the project.

gonutz 2018-05-01 01:39

Nice little puzzle game you have there.

Full screen does not work, it cuts off the top and bottom of the screen.

A little music or at least some sound effects would have been nice but I know that LD is short :-)

I really like the idea here, this is something you can really work with. But I feel that you have not really reached the full potential of these puzzle mechanics. The levels felt repetitive, the solutions were often the same for multiple levels which is a pity. I am sure you could get one or two different kinds of puzzles out of this. Still, there were of course different patterns, I am just saying that some levels felt alike. Not a big problem, though as the puzzles were really cool so why not play them twice? ;-)

Overall a cool puzzle game. Keep up the great work!

samuelsousa 2018-05-04 08:39

Neat puzzle game. There's is definitely fun to be have here. I'm not to fan of the graphics theme but that could be fixed. Solid!
