I'm Being Eaten By A Spider Queen (And I Don't Like It One Bit!) by L 2011-08-23T07:36:00
hahahah, weird and great.

hahahah, weird and great.
great job. i really like the presentation of the plot and the simple but nice graphics. wish it was wider so i could see the walls coming and have enough time to dodge them.
great audio work. however, it ran a bit slowly, the player hit box felt very unfair, and each level seemed to have the exact same wall layout.
cool idea. the vehicle reminds me of starflight (old genesis game). two complaints: the first time i loaded it up i was stuck in a room that was completely blocked in. and i found myself always looking at the radar meter and not at what was around me. replacing the visual meter with a repeating sound that got louder or changed with proximity would solve this.
cool and wacky concept! a few of the fish were really frustrating, especially the yellow one, and the controls felt somewhat random.
description surprisingly accurate. i couldn't figure out that i had to press esc i looked at the source though. :(
cool artwork and music, but the controls ruin it for me.
cool game. i like the 1/2 abilities. agreed with mr forkbomb that an objective like that would help.
very nice. looks cool and it's even fun to play.
awesome artwork and music! and it's fun too!! excellent work gentlemen.
i like the evil laugh! agreed with dramble, too easy if you just run down the middle.
nice control setup system--for a fun challenge i pressed all the wrong buttons at the beginning (left for down etc). the text was a bit weird.
like the previous commenter, it crashed when i followed the initial down arrow into the saw blades. :( some interesting gameplay ideas but very hard to control. i couldn't figure out how to run up walls. the music is nice and cheesy.
also, hilarious plot.
thanks guys! an atmosphere voting category would be cool. not enough LD games focus on that imo- i think it's a great way to make a more memorable experience.
sorry about that. i tried testing it earlier today on my office computer and discovered that it fails to play mine and pretty much all other love2d games. maybe you have the same issue? i didn't have a lot of time to debug but it unfortunately seemed like a somewhat fundamental library issue. :/
thanks for the feedback everyone. it is definitely encouraging me to continue working on the extended version.
@superflat and anyone else having trouble running it: try upgrading your graphics drivers. doing that fixed the issue i was seeing on my other computer.
@TurboDindon: nope, you didn't miss anything. the cave is just scenery.
@d_m: i think you will like what i'm doing with the extended version. i'm keeping it pretty cryptic while trying to introduce some story through non-textual means.
@grimloom: that is awesome! really nice posters. i think i like the one for mine most. :)
an update on the extended version: at this point i'm not extending this so much as turning it into a proper game. so it will probably take me a while. i'll post some stuff about it on the blog when i have more figured out.
some interesting puzzles, some felt a bit tedious. that ending screen surpassed my wildest expectations.
i was impressed with the intro and alarm lights, but the gameplay was disappointing. pretty easy to win if you walk through the trees along the edge :D
i like how you fly out into space at the end- feels very serene.
omg so frustrating. this would be good zen training.
kind of interesting controls... but the music is not original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRCkAumK5b4
awesome graphics! i too disagree with those naying the text. but i didn't know what to do at first and it took me a while to figure out what to click. i think the problem was that i didn't notice the blood on the ground--you could start it with the player getting hit or coughing up blood or something and then the bandage objective image could appear and then it would be pretty clear.
awesome! it is a bit rough around the edges but it's fun, charming, and so much game play variety. can't believe there's snowboarding, sonic springs, skydiving battle, time rewind, and a miniboss all in one LD game!!
cute graphics. the victory condition is kind of interesting, it provides a natural difficulty curve. it is too hard to win or lose though.
really nice entry, it is one of my favorites so far. graphics are simple but nice, the gameplay is engaging and provides a good challenge. i agree with the other commenters that some nice background music would have helped. other than that though this feels very solid and complete.
mmm candy. i scored 584222. it's a bit unintuitive how you have to get hit in the face with the poo rather than dodge it. :p
the random cutscenes were a bit underwhelming after the magnificent setup.
seems like it has potential, but the framerate really turned me off. it looks and sounds nice and the unusual boat controls are intriguing.
the game is trivially easy, but at least it looks cool. i was hoping for a card game after seeing the picture. :p
nice graphics and audio. the combat didn't feel that fun though unfortunately. the green spacesuit guys kept murdering me. :( also, yay kitty!
not bad. i found it hard to shoot accurately but the movement controls were nice and that's a bit more important. being able to shoot with mouse while maintaining the wasd controls would be nice. the guys that shoot at you are brutal.
not bad. i like the concept. the controls felt a little odd and i was able to win pretty easily by flying underwater surfacing just frequently enough to breathe. great touch with the thing in the depths.
too hard! i upgraded everything a few levels before hitting the drone, couldn't kill a single enemy.
i didn't like it. poetry usually doesn't do much for me though.
oh man those snakes are scary. nice little game.
very impressive! the art is really nice. i actually figured out how to summon the boss, but i didn't know it was going to work so i didn't stock up on ammo and died very quickly. :(
i didn't find it too hard. i liked the things that you can stand next to to make time pass quickly, and it was nice to be able to open up the map.png. the skeletons could have been more aggressive, and audio would have made it all the nicer.
thanks for the feedback everyone.
Vogie: interesting idea with the healing. tbh i haven't actually tried to beat the last two battles with the yellow cat yet. i'm sure it's possible, but the yellow cat is really hard to play optimally. one thing i was thinking of doing to make him a little stronger was having himself count as an orb for the purposes of the game of life calculations.
easlern: sorry about that. the ui relies on knowing that backspace can be used to back out of any menu (including the quit menu), which i guess should have been made clearer. if it was too simple for you, try playing the yellow cat.
bach: thanks! srpg is totally the best genre! i still have to finish the further development of my last LD game so i don't think i'll do anything more with this one. but i will surely make a full srpg game (or two) at some point and i will do some further exploration of these mechanics with that.
anyone who was having a hard time should check out the new strategy guide! also i played through with the yellow cat and was able to beat the game without any shenanigans, whew.
marudziik: thanks. the black one is definitely simpler; picking her is sort of an easy/intro setting.
23: pfft, kittens is the true theme! good call on the sound effects.
whoa, didn't expect it to be so trippy. awesome job.
nice game!
i scored 21.
i didn't think it was too hard. a few seconds of grace time (while holding your breath) after the time expires would have been nice though. the window was a bit small, which combined with the high mouse sensitivity, made it easy to get disoriented. other than that though i liked this. i was compelled to finish it even after dying twice with a full inventory just a step away from the ship.
great intro.
not bad. the bars in the upper left are very cute. i would have liked to see some enemy or danger to avoid or something to make it a little more interesting.
yay i saved the kitten. i second the point about the hit detection--a bit of generosity there would have made the last level less frustrating.
i like the red-eyed enemy. scored 121--curse you pythong!!
very interesting game. looks lovely.
hey stargoat, cool game. i really like the graphics/lighting, though i was thinking the same thing as jilius about having the light circle. too bad the sound didn't work, as i think that could have added a lot. i still am a bit confused about what causes it to end. the first time i played it stopped abruptly and i only ever saw a few mobs. second time i got swarmed a bunch and it felt more exciting, but then it ended suddenly again. third time the cave generator just gave me a little one-room cave in the center. :p would definitely love to see this as a realtime roguelike with some more stuff in it.
btw, i added a strategy guide on my game's entry page. you should check it out.
i only saw the one enemy, but he is somehow super creepy! awesome job with that.
nice simple game. it controls pretty well but agreed on the camera.
lol. very good for how short it is- the shortness actually adds to the humor i think! thumbs up on the art, music, fighting mechanic, and dialog.
i think you could have done a much better job with the flying mechanic, but excellent otherwise! really cool idea.
excellent! second to last puzzle was beautifully designed.
really nice. improve the controls though.
Hey, I installed visual c 2012, ran it, got MSVCP110.dll is missing. I'm using win 7 64.
It seems it worked for other people so maybe its on my end?
Anyway, sound's interesting and I'll come back and rate if I can get it to work.
This is great. I like the simplicity of seeking out and avoiding patterns and the minimal design adds to that focus.
I'm sure you could add more pattern challenges, level progression, etc.. and It would make it even better.
It also gives me strong 'flow' nostalgia.
even on super easy mode, it's pretty hard! the lack of air control on the jump felt annoying at first, but it did make for a slightly different experience than standard platformers. i couldn't get far enough to see all the abilities unfortunately, but those i did see seemed interesting.
dohohohohohoho
This was a nifty little game I got a kick out of. Highlights for me were the art and fast platforming. I felt the best way to play was to mad dash the level, using hearts as it seemed to give me more health frequently enough to do so.
Here is my constructive criticism: you might work on the jump velocity / feel, and also giving the pterodactyls & other level-crossing enemies a different color so that you can see them coming. I felt it frustrating to have random pterodactyls popping out at times. Also, the level design could be more varied in its jump challenges I felt.
Good work, good game.
Overall good work, I enjoyed it.
the gameplay felt kinda bland. most of the difficulty was in wrestling with the controls. cool graphics and music though.
really cool art and setting. i got kinda frustrated by the game not registering my clicks to start the charge up.
i got stuck on a whitish screen after the second room.
It was pretty amusing to fiddle with the settings and see different results, but I wish there were more variables to tweak and check your results.
Perhaps some kind of loose goals or "things to try out" would have been a neat addition.
Overall,I found it to be an interesting project.
I loved the "Durh" noise the wolf makes when you hit him. That single detail added about three points to my ratings overall
Here is some constructive criticism:
The baby buffalos have a tendency to try and run through joe to get to the grass, but you can't move... so you have to keep trying to reconfigure them to not bump into you. Maybe add some logic so that they seek the nearest clump of grass that isn't pastjoe?
I liked the character art but the level art I felt could have meshed a little bit better.
Good work, fun to play.
time demon is awesome.
both the help and play buttons freeze the game. i'm on win7.
Fun and interesting, but agree with the long story at the beginning. This is especially problematic as you want to quickly replay and have to sit through it again.
Overall, interesting concept with the 'pick your descendant' mechanic.
Neat game, interesting replay value. Music would have definitely added, and I also experienced a message that wouldn't go away, something like this: "If you have collected all the stars and not gotten something, then do something..."
Good work.
neat music. as you figured out, the spending is pretty buggy- your funds can go negative hehehe. with the incorrect amount being deducted there isn't much challenge.
AHAHAHA holy shit !
excellent writing. i doubt i'll come across another entry that can top this.
funny item names :)
cool concept, but i think the puzzle design needs some more work. there is little variety between puzzles and most of them you can solve trivially by walking the black tile around and absorbing everything.
Interesting concept for sure, but a bit unclear as to how exactly to progress. I didnt see what looked like a progress bar at the top move despite motivating tons of citizens.
I like the pixel art a lot and the sound effects + music were definitely enjoyable as well.
Nice game!
I wish I could set waypoints that my squad would run to and defend.
Also, it would be nice to be able to bump squadmembers out of the way as I often got stuck.
Final piece of constructive criticism: Make your character look unique! It was so easy to lose him in the heat of battle.
Overall, I found it to be lots of fun. Good work.
funny game :) i like how each of the creatures has different controls. very nice art and music!
This game is hilarious! I saw the title fromagist and instantly wanted to check out your cheese game. Wait, wasn't the theme evolution?
I guess you've got bacteria and stuff, which is related to evolution.. and you have to try different combos which is artificial (unnatural?) selection in a way.
Anyway, this was hilarious to read and click through. There are a lot of really funny lines and twists contrary to what I expected.
Good work.
cool graphics and music! it felt a bit unfair that the birds could fly through the rocks but i couldn't shoot through them.
pretty cool game. controls are fine. could have used a larger screen or less zoom, as i found myself keeping the enemies just off screen while fighting them to get hit less. also it would have been nice if the enemies' traits were move obvious.
interesting graphics and concept. i couldn't really tell when i was going to hit something due to the lack of depth perception. nice mellow music too.
Cool Concept, fun to try. I agree with others that there could be more feedback in battle.
This strongly reminded me of the colorful little characters on a box of nerds candy.
Interesting to say the least, but I think you kind of have to be into the whole fur thing. Otherwise, it was well written and I thought filtering photos was a good way to get art done quickly. I would have liked more options to interact, however.
Good work.
some cool bits, but i think you guys should have tried making the game shorter but more focused and polished.
the idea has some potential, but the controls and the need to read low resolution text in the corner of the screen in order to see what to do kill it.
Looks like it has lots of potential, but there is more explanation / clarity needed around what to do / what results to get. Maybe explain the mechanic more on the first load-in ?
Good work overall, I suggest spending more time with this.
Nice! This is a fun little puzzler / maze game. I like the art style too.
After playing through a bunch of levels, here are two pieces of constructive criticism: show a level count so I know i'm on lvl 6 or whatever, also show a loading animation when you click retry level. It seemed frustrating to get no feedback after clicking that, then just sitting for a few seconds before the level would load up again.
Overall great job.
This is a nice shooter. I felt that the art did little to aid the player in distinguishing the character, enemies, and projectiles. Other than the tough visual recognition part, the gameplay was quite enjoyable.
Good job.
not bad! simple but well-tuned gameplay.
a couple minor issues: the web version has an image filtering problem- it doesn't look pixely for me (download version works fine though). and it displays touch controls when i'm playing with keyboard. :(
Considering you did this in 5-6 hours this is an admirable little game. I found it quite fun to time the turning and make my way through the levels. For improvements, i would say more detailed / larger levels, and the introduction of new mechanics.
Good work.
awesome!
you guys obviously put a ton of work into this. really nice graphics, controls well. sadly the gameplay is pretty much nonexistent. i didn't bother to try, but it seems to me that you'd win if you just left the mouse in the center and didn't come back from grabbing that coffee. maybe the guys should move around? maybe they could fight battles across the line forcing you to do stuff to maintain the balance?
Nice work! I loved the art style, the gameplay, and progression of levels -- it really pulled me into the world. I also like how the ending tied it together and gave some more explanation as to what I was doing.
The only thing that ruined the immersion for me was the border pattern when you get to the edge of the map but otherwise I felt very much 'in the zone'. Maybe just do a gradual fade of white / grey to simulate fog?
Overall, i'm really impressed you were able to do this in 48 hours. Well done.
nice! amazing concept and execution.
Very cool game. I too liked how you gain the powers of enemies. I also found it interesting how towards the end you would see enemies that had all of the wierd evolutionary traits piled into one.
Good work.
really cool game! i played it half a dozen times until finally winning with one second left on the clock.
two things you could have done better: represent visually which abilities you can train, rather than having people have to read the instructions about it. skip the minimap and just shrink the grid to fit it all on the screen!
Seconding TehSkull. Host it on dropbox or google drive or something. I'm not registering for some random download site (that frankly looks pretty spammy).
Had a blast with this trying out different robot variations. I think the idea is solid as it is, but as others have commented more feedback on weapons (i.e. registering hits, hits received, etc..) could be interesting.
Cool game.
Interesting game, I agree with others that it was bit hard to see where I was. I also felt that the feedback of hitting things was a bit lacking -- it seems easy enough to shoot & hit, but there wasnt a satisfying response when a shot connected with the target.
Overall, interesting shooter, but i felt that the art reduced the clarity of hitting / dodging significantly.
the physics is not too great; jumping feels super floaty, and you lose the ability to air control if you run into a wall. i like the concept of searching for your robot parts though.
Interesting concept, but ultimately it was a bit too vague for me. I liked exploring the house, but I felt the smartphone part was a bit odd -- I'm left wondering why you chose to make a 3d game have a dating flashback sim text adventure?
I played it on the web, but it sounds like the android turning around would be neat to try.
Anyway, good work.
cool music and amusing story. the gameplay lacks feedback.
I felt this game concept had a lot of potential but ultimately it was too vague to grasp. On the first try I didnt notice the brown dot was what I was controlling. Second run, I moved around successfully but was not entirely clear on what to do.. ? Try and grab the drumstick?
The spacebar section blinks too fast to see what it says at times...
I felt the death screen just took too long. I would have played this much more if i didn't have to sit and wait for 20 seconds (approximately) each time I died.
Good effort but please make it more accessible overall & painless to retry.
good polish, bad game :/
great ending
that ending... lmao
:3
