LD21 — Escape

Ascapen Prime by Six 2011-08-23T02:32:00

@Klare
Agreed on music, a punishing dodging game like this pretty much needs an epic soundtrack to keep people at it. Too bad I'm rubbish at music.

And a small tip: the spawn rate of the barriers actually is dependant on how far left you are, so if you hang closer to the core, less will spawn (but it's easier to be knocked into it :P ).

Effugere -- an escape game by dev_zero 2011-08-30T09:47:00

Nice stripped down stealth style game. Amazing how with such simple graphics, it can still give the feeling of something much more complex.

Moustache Chick by joekinley 2011-08-30T08:52:00

Most of it has already been said here, but I'd like the reiterate some stuff. The platforming physics could definitely be a lot better, along with the controls. The dripping, sliding and solidifying lava is a neat mechanic, but like pekuja said, the randomness makes it too, well, random. It would be nice for the lava to be deterministic, so that you can know if you stand in a certain spot you will be safe (for a while) and just have to time you next move right.

Mindbane by LegacyCrono 2011-08-30T09:30:00

Very solid, though the sides of the hitting the spikes was perhaps a little too unforgiving. Good distribution of checkpoints though, those are what tend to make a damn hard platformer playable. Also nice job working in the interesting jumping mechanics while still keeping the controls easy and intuitive. I have to say as soon as I beat it and saw the 'Bad End' along with the 'x / 5' I jumped right back in as I knew exactly what I had missed (which is rare with bad vs good ends).

Only real complaints would be the spikes hitbox, maybe a want for a bit more variation in the tiles and a few spelling/grammar problems in the dialogue. Nice work.

Escape Lines by henrypenface 2011-08-23T08:55:00

A fun little game mechanic, it'd be nice to see it explored a bit more. Also seemed like it could be moving about about twice the speed, once you fire off all the ships there is quite a bit of sitting and waiting.

Vector Dash by black_mage_andy 2011-08-30T10:09:00

Fun little game, I like the clean vector look. I for one actually enjoy the asteroids like controls, though the acceleration was perhaps a little too quick. Nice that you were forgiving on the ship collision, but I think I would have preferred if it was actually to the ship shape.

Good job on completing your first game! I might suggest reading up on some platformer physics, lots of great tutorials out there on the web.

Oh No, Lava! by paraboxstudios 2011-08-30T08:34:00

I actually found this quite enjoyable for it's simplicity, although it also felt a little too punishing.
The fact that getting killed only lost 1 coin adds a bit of strategy to the mix, in that if you can go to a dead end that gets you at least 2 coins, that is still a net gain. I think with a little more variety, some better level design and slowing moving lava, this could be quite fun.
Also, the approaching wall of doom really did give me a strong feeling of escape.

Harvest by dave84 2011-08-30T10:32:00

Reasonable fun and plays fine, though not too much to hold you have you clear a few screens. I think the controls are ok, though you might want to add in a delay to how often you can click, tied to the engine flame graphic.

A way you could make the controls a lot more accessible, and I think make the game quite a bit more interesting, would be to calculate where the ship will go over the next few seconds with the current trajectory and draw a curve showing that. You could even make it red if there will be a collision and green otherwise, and explain it away as being the ships navigation computer or some such.

Ball Escape by Mjiig 2011-08-30T08:23:00

Like others have said, nice mechanic and simple enjoyable gameplay.

As for a few criticisms, the fast movement made me feel like I didn't have a lot of fine control on what was going to happen, so a lot of the time I was just clicking and seeing what resulted. Also, as the top half of the window is rarely used, you might want to explore using a narrower resolution. I liked that it was entirely mouse controlled, but I did find myself trying to click near the edge and accidentally clicking out of the window a few times. Might be better to have a bit more of a border between the gamespace and edge of the window.
