LD22 — Alone

Frosthome by Jeck 2011-12-24T03:17:00

Nice. Enviroment looks very good. Platforming is solid, though I wouldn't mind slightly faster initial acceleration and braking. One minor complaint is that in some parts its easy to miss a jump and land not in a pit, but on an earlier platform, so the recovery system doesn't help you. Maybe the game can know which platform is furthest along and only restore you to the furthest place you've reached, instead of the platform you were on last?

Nice touch with the freezing to death too. I wish there was some sound though. Just a little blowing wind might do wonders. It's also pretty short, but that's understandable

Challenge Accepted! by fatality674 2011-12-21T05:51:00

I was going to rate this, but I don't like giving my email adress to strange file hosting sites. Sorry.

The Travel Section by khakionion 2011-12-24T03:20:00

Being limited to iOS seems likely to curtail your ratings. For example, I'd try it, but I don't have any sort of iDevice, or even iTunes.

You Can't Go Through The Door by Trollamor 2011-12-21T06:44:00

The opening screens and monolouge were attention getting, but the actual game seems a bit absent. I spent several minutes pushing buttons and getting pleasant bloops but nothing happened beyond that. From the title that may be the point, but it's not a very entertaining point.

Dr. Autofober's Experiment by tcstyle 2011-12-21T05:54:00

Things you do alone... by jeffz 2011-12-24T03:09:00

Didn't really tickle my funny bone or entertain. Were I to comment on it on a game, the lack of instructions like 'press any key' on the initial screen and mismatch between the 'readme' and actual 'gameplay' was somewhat frustrating to me. Maybe I'm in the wrong frame of mind for this.

Alone on Ganymede by pelton 2011-12-24T03:18:00

Looks and sounds interesting, but no binary==no play from me. :(

On Top Of The World by guerrillacontra 2011-12-30T23:57:00

Nice music and decent background, but I find the game flawed. Without some explanation of the mechanics and function of the various blocks, its all trial and error, and things happen so fast but take long enough to get back to that it's a pretty frustrating trial and error. The sudden jump of the camera whenever you climb a box adds tot he unpleasantness. Also, isn't the menu button click sound a stock windows sound?

Cyber Shield by zapaman 2011-12-31T00:05:00

Game looks nice and the idea seems solid, but it doesn't seem to work. I noticed no bullets bouncing in the asian mode, so it's not very winnable... being able to restart after losing without having to reopen the program would be very nice, as would be some indication of how to close it from fullscreen mode. Could use a bit more sound too.

Untitled Tree Game by jordizzle 2011-12-31T00:26:00

Despite the incomplete nature of the game, it's one of the ones I've njoyed the most. very nice graphics and sounds and the systems that are present are basically fun. I'd love to see this expanded further.

Problems with the game as is: Trees seem to often end up outside the viewable/clickable area, and tree planeters seem to often get stuck trying to plant a tree in the 'cave'. Also if you don't build a tree planter at first you can get yourself stuck without wood, which is a little annoying.

A Hero In! by SunnyCode 2011-12-31T00:45:00

The initial instructions seem to have been misleading, implying I'd get hurt if I bumped into any sheep, then the whole game was about bumping into sheep. The game was a bit glitchy, occasionally I'd bump into a sheep and nearby sheep would appear, dissapear, or teleport. Some variety in levels would have helped hold interest I think, but I got bored before seeing anything new.

A sub-par adventure by Jcorp 2011-12-24T03:31:00

Found the debug .exe buried in there, and it worked, but I wouldn't expect everyone to or to be able to compile it. Got stuck wandering around the house with a towel and powerless keys and no idea what to do, but that's me and point and click adventure games.

The story was somewhat intriguing, and I wouldn't have minded finding out more, but like I said, stuck. Also, the sounds are much too high impact, especially the movement sound. I was annoyed by that one the moment I heard it, and it only got worse.

Dig Dig Dig! by Rijida 2011-12-24T06:04:00

One of the cooler LD games I've played so far. The music loop is very welcome and takes a long time to get old. The digging sounds get old faster, but their presence is also welcome. A basically fun idea with a big enough playing field to keep the player busy for a while. Some things kept me from beating it though:

Speed may give you a fuel efficiency gain, I'm not sure, but since digging doesn't seem to use fuel the drill upgrades don't. That same fact makes digging generally more efficent than going around through open space, and that's pretty weird. The win condition and upgrade prices are pretty steep too. Finally, collision detection on the digging is wonky, so you often are digging through tiles you wouldn't expect to be, and that's annoying. It'd be very nice to be able to slide over a surface without digging through it, just from a playability standpoint

The Lost Viking by lasseastrup 2011-12-24T06:12:00

was I just attacked by numbermunchers?

Apoc: Apocalypse Shooter by JohnLeeroy 2011-12-24T06:21:00

Mouse sensitivity is crazy high, I started to get arm cramps trying to control it. That'd be a cool thing to have in the empty options menu. In-game instructions would be handy, too.

It's Space by EatThePath 2011-12-21T00:28:00

@Quimby: You have to hold back down for a bit before all your existing velocity is killed and you start going backwards.

It's Space by EatThePath 2011-12-25T01:05:00

Jeffz asked to explain how the game matches the theme. This is a fair question.

The glib answer: Well you don't have any friends in the game, do you?

The frank answer: Not as well as I'd like. My full plan involves the relatively small player exploring grand and extensive ruins of a fallen civilization, and attempting to piece together what resources and answers they can from it, while being hounded by uncommunicative hostile forces all the way. Done properly I think this could evoke a very strong atmosphere and match the theme well. Only the barest beginnings of these elements made it into the competition's deadline. I like those beginnings, and I'm building on them in a post-dare version, but I will openly admit the dare version isn't the most thematically strong game in the compo

LD24 — Evolution

You ARE the RAIN by alvivar 2012-08-29T00:25:00

Your dropbox webplayer link is broken.

I really don't know if there's a theme connection here that I'm missing, but I just don't see it. Otherwise an intriguing and very atmospheric game, but a bit simple, and I'd reaalllllllyyyyy like an autofire.

Static by aquasheep 2012-08-31T23:28:00

Weird and wacky! Neat little toy.

Cubevo by NostraDamon 2012-08-29T01:27:00

Quite a nice game, though I got stuck at 38%. I couldn't figure out how to attack the monster even after finding the sword. It'd be nice if you could slide along obejcts rather than coming to a stop whenever you bump into anything. Also, I don't really feel like this works with the theme interestingly. Despite using the word, it doesn't really feel like things are evolving, just getting unlocked.

Prance Prance Evolution by Josh Riley 2012-08-31T23:03:00

Interesting idea and decent execution, but I didn't really find it that engaging. Maybe if there were more to do, or it was easier to see what all your horse's stats were compared to each other.

Space Mayham by DevWouter 2012-08-28T19:15:00

This is going to mostly be critiques, but I'd like to make it clear that I did have some fun, and the game is essentially complete.

Off the bat, the enemies are small and dim, and that makes it a strain to see them. That, plus their small size, the imprecision of the weapons, and the extremity ofthe player movement compared to the enviroment, and it can be frustrating killing lone enemies. And given there's no cost to firing both weapons, I'm not sure why they're on both keys, it mostly seems to serve to make me press two buttons instead of one.

On top of that I don't really think the basic upgrade system is enough to really make it an evolution game, unless there's a lot more going on I'm not noticing.

Nom's Evolvathlon by bvanschooten 2012-08-31T23:55:00

Quite cool! Controls were a little clunky on a mouse. I liked the puzzle-solving aspect of it. It'd be nice if there were some ordering of evolutions so that you, say, couldn't get "fly" before getting "breathe", and if there were a way to restart the level without restarting the game.

Mutate by JPatrick 2012-08-29T02:04:00

Kept playing until a key spawned on top of the door and made it impossible to get through. passing through messages seems a little flaky too. I like the idea of randomized upgrades, but the player starts out so capable compared to the challenges, they were nearly ignorable.

Able by doubleA 2012-08-31T23:59:00

On my system it didn't appear that the direction I moved and the direction the camera was facing had anything to do with each other, which made doing anything pretty challenging...

Far From Earth by Ramikaze 2012-09-01T00:26:00

Quite neat, once you figure out the controls. Around wave 75 I had enough guys and monsters and bullets everywhere that lag started becoming an issue though. Monsters also stopped being a real threat... By wave 100 I had to stop because it ran so slow.

Would also be nicer if the archer's shots were more visible.

Death Cell by fohx 2012-09-01T00:48:00

Awesome! Great way of using the Game of Life (though it sometimes went too fast to really be able to see what was going on; maybe a bigger playing field?) Gotta be careful what you shoot!

Made a windows executable available here: http://alopex.li/temp/death-cell.zip

Rings of Evolution by gbellgames 2012-08-29T04:56:00

The intro seriously drags, and the music loop behind it is just not very good. There's no obvious option to skip as far as I can tell, either. The font is pretty hard to read at times, as well. I admire the length of the game, but the gameplay feels really unpolished, so I don't think I'm going to see the whole thing.

Rock-Parer-Scissors War by Vladp995 2012-08-31T23:09:00

More interesting than it looks! A way to direct your units even a little bit might have been interesting, or at least give them more sophisticated AI... maybe something like the officers in Darwinia. A way of keeping score or getting a list of how many units you and your opponent have could be nice too. Maybe multiplayer? Idunno!

Convolution by Fififox 2012-08-29T02:45:00

My (windows) console window says "failed to open the audio device" and nothing else happens.

Lamarck's Theory of Evolution by Gear 2012-08-31T23:13:00

Neat idea, but the controls were hard to handle... Aiming was difficult and it didn't tell me what the zxc keys were for at first. More upgrades as you level up would be neat.

Evolution Racer by crackerblocks 2012-08-30T05:22:00

Not to be a wet blanket, but it don't really amuse me. I seem to be in a minority there, but defying expectations leaves a sour taste when the expectation being defied is 'have fun'. Sorry.

I enjoyed the music, though.

Unnatural Selection by SaiKai 2012-08-29T19:15:00

Nice idea. It looks like what dinos make it through influences the properties of the next wave, which is pretty cool. Two complaints: The aiming mechanic is pretty frustrating for me, I'd rather just have point and click. Second, the explosion sound effects seem to have very uneven volume.

Evolve 'em all by kill0u 2012-08-29T04:28:00

I really, really like this in concept, put it's really insanely unforgiving. The dense bullet patterns, one HP ship, and greater-than-one-pixel hitbox all combine to make it painfully difficult.

DashDashDASH by refreshgames 2012-08-29T00:32:00

I like the idea of this, but unfortunatley it's not actually very fun. It looks lice, and the sounds and concepts are cool, but the movement physics are so slidey and the targeting so unforgiving I can't get very far, and it's very frustrating.

I would love to see a post LD version of this with the rough spots smoothed out, though!

The World of Worlds by 2A1S 2012-08-31T23:20:00

Neat little RTS game! Actually quite hard. It's easy to get to the point where you can't make any more workers.

Curiosity, The Untold Story by Zoomyzoom 2012-08-28T19:00:00

A pretty complete and basicly fun game. If I were to complain about something, it'd be that the progression is pretty slow to get started. I spent a few minutes just standing on a hill killing zombies without having to move at all. Some encouragement to move and some brakka brakka noises for the guns would be nice too! Still, I had fun!

Elefount 2: The Elementalution by EatThePath 2012-08-29T02:15:00

Switchbreak: Unfortunately, though plans were made for various weapon effects, the only one that was implemented is that your selection steadily influences the bias of the environment.

LD28 — You Only Get One

Data Stains by Evilion 2013-12-16T03:31:00

I have no idea what I'm doing and frankly trying to figure it out is proving somewhat hard on the eyes.

The Hotdog Parable by SunShiranui 2013-12-17T18:41:00

Played it to completion, pretty fun management game. Some little quibbles: It seems that if you run out of money and hotdogs you lose, even if you've got a hotdog shipment coming. That's a bit irksome. Also, it'd be nice if there were tooltips for what the numbers in the top meant.

0RBITALIS by AlanZucconi 2013-12-16T03:24:00

Really neat to see this pop up, as it's quite similar to an idea I've been toying with for a non-LD game for quite some time. I recognize some of the star names, but not all, are they all in some way based on real stars?

It does feel a little like the physics are working in ways that are subtly wrong to me, but that may be me at fault and not the game. Had a lot of fun once I got used to it, and love the sound and visual design.

Cat Gentlemans Play: Insult Spinner 10 Cents by RobotLovesKitty 2013-12-16T06:32:00

I love everything about this. Everything.

Charitable Donation by Lizzip 2013-12-16T20:54:00

Not a bad concept, and I rather like the lighting effect as the ball moves around. The rather pure randomness about it takes way from the fun for me though, and the controls could use refinement. Allowing arrow key input, showing current rewards and current ball placement in the field, and making the buttons rectangular rather than clicking on the pixels of text would all be nice.

You Only Get 1 by Monoquartz 2013-12-16T21:38:00

A very neat idea. Almost got stuck on the second level because I didn't notice the instructions were in a scrollbox and the spacebar instruction was below the view window.

Also, it seems annoyingly possible to get stuck in things while sizing up, and all the levels I played seems to have the same gimmick of multiply by two early on, and then divide by two by the end of the level. More variety in that or variety sooner, would be welcome.

Dungeon Farmer by Dr_V 2013-12-16T02:54:00

A fairly impressive little progression game, but it gets reasonably monotonous long before level ten. I quit at around level 4. Given how much of the game is waiting, it'd be nice if it didn't pause when it loses focus, and being able to loop-grow things would be nice too. Perhaps the monotony could have been broken up by introducing new mechanics and resources as you progress? I'm also not seeing the theme connection, myself

Stranded by Jeasonfire 2013-12-16T20:55:00

Currently, jeasonfire.tk can't be found.

Minute Dreams by piotrszoka 2013-12-16T23:25:00

Love the look and sound of the game, but the first big jump I have a ton of trouble getting past. I got past it once with like ten seconds left, and haven't been able to manage it a second time. Is there some trick to it I'm missing?

Okay actually before posting I went back and tried again and figured out you can wall jump. So that's figured out. Basic platforming well executed. Bravo.

Uni-turner by EatThePath 2013-12-16T22:04:00

@Suese: I'm not sure how much sound really would have done, seeing as it'd only be two or three sounds. And music is something I don't currently have any ability to produce myself, alas.

One Cigarette by Suese 2013-12-17T01:42:00

Best use of the theme I've run into so far! My only real complaint about the game is that dialogue bubbles can extend off the screen and it feels like I might be missing some things as a result.

LD42 — Running out of space

Running out of Hell by Tygrak 2018-08-15T00:54:09Z

I had no problem with the rar file. Especially with the music this is quite impressive for a 5 hour effort. The turnbased movement didn't feel great though, it might feel smoother if there was some recognition of inputs immediately even if the move didn't fully take place till the beat.

Storage Corp Ltd. by PixelFormedStudios 2018-08-13T23:59:56Z

Loved it. The music loop was very effectively compelling, and the gameplay was very well tuned.

PlaceIt by farfadet46 2018-08-13T14:17:31Z

Well, I don't speak the language but it was easy enough to work out what to do. The graphics and sounds are effective. Gameplay is rather too simple though, as far as I can tell it'd run it's course after about 30 seconds and replaying didn't add much. Also the way walking works is odd, it feels as though it makes you take a full long-stride step if you even tap in a given direction, and I think I'd find that very frustrating in a more complex game.

Ultimate Boss Battle of Doom by Gurbx 2018-08-13T18:27:35Z

Years of gaming history trained me to try to mario-stomp on the bad guys initially, which didn't work out well. I figured out the actual mechanic eventually, but it took a few tries. Hard but fun, and good graphics, the title image alone made me laugh.

Claustrophobia by EX3D0 2018-08-13T15:09:18Z

I dead-ended pretty fast. Got the bobby pins, but couldn't figure out how to use them. Dragged them into slots in my inventory and facerolled most of the keyboard while standing next to the door and nothing happened.

System_Corruption by antonsem 2018-08-14T23:48:46Z

Agreed about the tutorials. I must admit I didn't get past the allocator. I play games in windowed mode whenever possible, and yours doesn't seem to capture the mouse fully. Fine when just panning, but as soon as I had to start clicking it's a big problem.

Otherwise a pretty slick work

*N*X warriors by Stepan Shabalin 2018-08-13T18:16:27Z

I had some difficulty getting to the game which matches the problems in comments before, and I'll add the comment that you really ought to name your download something more descriptive than "LD42.zip" or "platform_build", but I pushed throught them and am glad I did. There's a neat and fun simple platformer inside. I particularly like how the map is randomized each time, and the 'oh shit' moment the first time I let a high level directory die was memorable. I will say that for the intro text skip, I would prefer if the first button press skipped to the text all being visible and the second press skipped to the next screen. Also when I spammed spacebar once it seemed to skip the gameplay and went directly to dead.

That stuff aside, as I said I quite enjoyed the game itself. Some small improvements that come to mind is a progress bar for nodes being destroyed, and perhaps just remove the player taking damage as a mechanic at all. It'd also be neat if you wrapped from the bottom of the screen to the top instead of bounced.

Oh yeah, and score didn't seem to work.

TOROID by Yetman 2018-08-17T21:35:57Z

Very interesting idea, I'd be curious to see this elaborated more on in the future. You seem to already be aware of all the critiques I'd possibly make :)

LaserJuice (Top Down Shooter) by NoTime4Name 2018-08-15T21:14:24Z

I'm able to play it without trouble, and it's amazing. My only quibble would be that the zap zap of the main weapon gets a little grating, a problem that BFXR sounds can often have. The music is great! BeepBox looks like an awesome tool, though you might want to correct your linking of it. BeepBox.Co is where I found the site, .Com is a parked domain.

Love the use of theme, had a ton of fun, and it has a great look. One of the best.

Made With Meat by EatThePath 2018-08-13T18:38:31Z

@danielefisher OSX and WebGL builds have been added, my bad for overlooking them intially and thanks for commenting rather than just moving on.

@frank-gevaerts Thanks for pointing that out, I'd overlooked the part of the rules saying ports were explicitly allowed.

Made With Meat by EatThePath 2018-08-14T15:45:59Z

Based on the repeated feedback and watching some people play, I've added an instructions section to the description.

Made With Meat by EatThePath 2018-08-14T23:35:00Z

@roidz Thanks :) In fact I know some people assumed this was Jam at first glance for some reason. This is really my first time making sprite art, and I can't say I'm especially proficient with any visual arts besides some basic vertex juggling. But I had a drawing tablet out to doodle to help me think while brainstorming, and that just ended up carrying forward into sprites instead of my easier fallback of using lowpoly 3d graphics. The result is admittedly very rough, but contextually I'm pretty happy with it.

Made With Meat by EatThePath 2018-08-15T17:49:24Z

@nam-nguyen It's an issue with the UI scaling hiding the start buttons. Since it's keeping people from playing at all I think I'll have to do a bugfix update for it. Sorry for the trouble, I'll @ you again when it's updated if you want to try it again then.

Made With Meat by EatThePath 2018-08-15T19:43:52Z

@nam-nguyen All versions, webGL included, should now work better at low resolutions.

Made With Meat by EatThePath 2018-08-15T21:12:45Z

@nam-nguyen Yeah, whenever the yellow-green bits floating down hit an organ they damage it. I'd hoped the noise they make would have been enough of a hint there but feedback suggesests otherwise. Healthbars would have probably signposted it better, but that didn't happen. Thanks for giving it a second try!

Crushed by comenoha 2018-08-16T02:00:06Z

This is utterly fantastic, I think this game has legs outside of the jam with a little work. The music loop is a bit short and doesn't loop perfectly, and the walljumping needs some refinement. That's all I can think of to say besides that it's fantastic. I didn't finish it yet, but I will come back for more.

Crushed by comenoha 2018-08-16T02:01:46Z

hah, left the game open while writing that and noticed that if you leave it at the start of a level for long enough all the lasers turn off ;) might be a tip for anyone having a hard time beating a level.

Spaced Out by Roidz 2018-08-14T02:54:22Z

This is fantastic. The sound is perfect, the lopping point of the music popped out at me a little now and then but otherwise it is very good. The visuals are right up my alley, the twist on asteroids is quite good. Just making the sides not wrap is good difficulty increase on it's own for someone who has played Asteroids before. My only complaint is that once you get a handle on the basics it doesn't ramp up the difficulty very fast, a little more pressure after the first minute or two would have been good I think.

Spaced Out by Roidz 2018-08-14T22:34:57Z

@roidz I was playing on the WebGL builds yes.

Mob Floor by Pixels Everywhere 2018-08-13T17:13:12Z

Quite neat. I will say it was super unclear from ingame information that the bottom of the screen was a pit and that I needed to throw things into, I thought my game had bugged after I defeated the dummy until I read this page again. The music is a very fun groove, but doesn't loop very well.

Looks great. Very solid work.

Lest mynyt vacation by Akaneiro 2018-08-13T14:26:10Z

The first 'inventory tetris' game I've played from the jam, but I expect it won't be the last . The object library was pretty amusing! A few, the TV in particular, seemed a bit too large, obscuring their placement area slightly. It'd also have been nice to have short delay between losing and the transition to the loss screen, maybe with a fadeout of the music and a failure sound effect. The sudden end of the intense music is offputting. Also a 'puzzle' mode with no time limit would be nice I think.

Deep Decent by DanielEFisher 2018-08-13T14:54:28Z

A good concept, but ultimately it doesn't play very well. The controls and camera just don't work very well, and gravity is weak enough that you seem to do a fair amount of Wile-E-Coyote over the pits before falling. The biggest thing that I noticed with the controls is that attacks made while moving are *queued*, so they wait however long it is till you stop moving and then happen. That feels really bad.

Finally, while it's remarkable that someone managed to detail anything in the allotted time as the enemy model is, it simply doesn't fit at all with the other things on screen. Makes a pretty incoherent visual space.

Orby by Samurai Ducks 2018-08-14T14:18:32Z

Looks and sounds excellent. Not a huge fan of not having control of the aiming, and it's very hard.

Devil Warship Makujin by Ceuteum 2018-08-14T13:45:03Z

This looks like it's right up my alley as a game, unfortunately some difficulty with the controls(I'd rather have left-right be turning than the direct directional controls) and the lack of a restart button, combined with the ease of death, kept me from getting very far in it.

Alchemy Factory by Treizive 2018-08-15T00:22:16Z

Echoing the words about the combinations here. I got some things to happen, but could never remember how I got there. A combo guide on the side that filled out as you tried things might be a useful addition if you want to refine the game in the future. Also, I found the constant sounds rather hard on the ears, which is always a danger with BFXR sounds(just guessing, but if not it's a similar effect).

The Eternal Fight (for space in bed) by derpylz 2018-08-13T16:56:53Z

Very entertaining use of theme! The combo system was hard to get a handle on, which hurt the fun a bit, but still pretty good.

Very very impressive in the compo, though the lack of some standard RTS conventions like bandboxing hurt the playability a bit. Bridges also seemed very finicky without great reason other than UI time constraints. But very very impressive.

Nice twist on the tetrisy ideas. You aren't kidding it about being hard though. I think it'd be a bit more fun if the grab was a toggle instead of somethign you had to hold down, and if there was some visual feedback of it. Overall quite nice though. Extra point for adding in a volume control.

I do enjoy some good bullet hell, and this was some quite decent bullet hell for a jam. It wasn't immediately obvious to me that I'd have full range of motion, got me a bit of frustration, but I'm not sure how you'd get around that. I'm unclear what entropy does from my play so far. The sound effects get pretty harsh on the ears without any volume or mute options, though they do have some of the oldschool charm. I only got to the first boss, whose attack pattern seems a little too extreme for my tastes. Loved the wormholes though, they really spiced things up.
