Graphics are really nice and game has some great potential. For the future if you are planning to expand on this further I would recommend that you add some feedback to the enemies when you kill them. This can range from a small sound effect to shaking the camera. Great Job though :)

bibilega 2018-08-15 16:11

I like this simple graphics and it was nice to play. I hope you're finished your game!

antoined73 2018-08-15 16:34

The concept is reAlly interesting ! I liked the graphics and i think this is a really intersting interpretation of the theme :) I wish too the game was working ! The 3D part is really beautiful and it inspire me to do game about planes haha ! The 2D physics for turning are too slippering according to me and the control of the camera in 3D in upside down (going up goes down, i think i prefer going up goes up).

Anyway congratulations for the idea, tell me when you have a new version of the game :)

rob-cigna 2018-08-15 20:59

Cool interpretation of the theme! I can see how enjoyable this game would be with a bit more work. You seem to have anticipated my most urgent criticism: it's hard to enjoy the 3D parts with the current camera controls.

It seems like the camera tries to guide your view forward for yaw rotations, but not pitch. And it does this even when I am actively trying to control the camera. Perhaps if you gave it a simple cooldown after any mouse movement, so it wouldn't try to do that within, say, 2 seconds of the player moving the mouse? And, of course, add something similar for the plane's pitch rotations. Also, since the plane can go completely upside-down, it might be better to use the plane's own up instead of the world up vector for your look rotations, if you aren't already.

Beyond that it sounds like you already have a solid idea of what would make it better.

diaxcor 2018-08-16 01:03

I like it ... tbh i didn't unterstand the game ... but i also like the controls

ramanujo 2018-08-16 01:08

I know it's unfinished, but let me say that it really shows you took your time on what you *do* have, because it is really beautiful! I think my noobie advice for future jams (as in I'm the noob here...) would be to allocate time differently, if possible. Little things like simple sound effects might have a big impact! Well done.

raivk 2018-08-16 11:54

Amazing art style. The concept is original, you gather energy, and bam you go free from the mayhem, in a peacefull 3D world ! Fix your 3D plane camera, add some sounds, add the missing features, and you have something super cool ;) If you do a rework of your game, I'll be more than happy to play it :D

ryanjavanshir 2018-08-16 14:35

I really like the concept going from 2D to 3D. Sound sound would be nice, that changes from 8bit to orchestral between the two modes. Great job!

mercerbox 2018-08-16 15:05

Super technically ambitious! Great starting idea for a project

amour-du-pain 2018-08-16 15:22

Well, you know exactly what's right and wrong in your concept, and we know exactly what happened thanks to your post-mortem, so I don't havce much to say, except the result is still impressive in my eyes, and that I really liked the 3D world's look. Keep up the good work man ! :)

purrfexionator 2018-08-16 17:10

It didn't run too well on my computer, but I was still able to enjoy it! It was an insanely clever and innovative concept, although i'm not quite sure how it fits the theme. Overall the concept was cool and fun, despite being unfinished! Kinda reminded me of the 2d mario sections in super mario galaxy. Well done, keep up the good work!

epigramgames 2018-08-16 19:01

Interesting concept, would be a great game if refined.

happyhour 2018-08-16 23:02

Super dope aesthetics. I'm personally not a fan of tank/plane controls with an overhead view but the sense of speed you get from this one feels pretty natural and comfortable. Really wondering where you were going with this because the 2D to 3D mechanic seems like it could lead to some entertaining results. Would love to see a follow up to this concept someday.

cristihkj 2018-08-17 18:31

Nice game! Really cool and interesting! :D

rayne 2018-08-17 20:59

The aesthetic here is amazing. I'd love to see more of your games!

eatthepath 2018-08-17 21:35

Very interesting idea, I'd be curious to see this elaborated more on in the future. You seem to already be aware of all the critiques I'd possibly make :)

shimage2 2018-08-17 22:54

Both 2D and 3D controle feeling was good. The feeling of moving from 3D to 2D was a fresh feeling like falling from the universe to the planet. Really cool idea.

mahalis 2018-08-18 18:09

Wow, this is really ambitious! Love the art style in 2D mode, with the drifting particle-things in the background - gives it a feeling of depth, ironically. Would love to play a finished version. Great work!

baronb 2018-08-19 01:39

Hey, this was a really cool idea. I could see leaving the 2d plane to the 3d plane being a cool mechanic.

carlos-giraldo 2018-08-19 05:28

The concept alone is worth a couple of points. the 2D aspect reminds me of Nier Automata, which is a good thing. with better controls and camera, would love to see more of the vision that was laid out here.

balka 2018-08-19 19:45

Awesome idea! Nice graphich, it would be really great with harmful enemies, but even without them, I really enjoyed flying around in different dimensions. It would be even cooler having fights in the 3d too.

jiri-holzel 2018-08-19 20:10

I really like this concept. It would be fine use it in future, because this concept has lot of potential (you know, https://youtu.be/N0WjV6MmCyM). Btw: I was scary about the rotation squares objects. I think that it is not good shape for things, which you have to collect :) just a detail

erikiene 2018-08-23 00:46

Crazy this was made within 72 hrs... amazing work! Very unique idea and despite things missing or not working perfectly (as expected for a jam game), very good execution. The visuals in both 2D and 3D are top notch. I agree with the comment above regarding the shape of the fuel pickups, my first instinct was to avoid those. Finally, you might know this already, but Keijiro (creator of the sky shader you used) is a legend. Follow him on github, twitter and anywhere else you can find him. He's created so many great utilities in Unity and it's just cool watching what he's working on.

ventura 2018-08-23 14:58

OmG.. amazing! I love this kind of things. Very very creative, artistic mixing 2d and 3d in the same world. I really enjoyed, thanks very much.

2018-08-24 17:09

Really interesting idea. Unfortnuately the 3D part is really clunky and moving around there was also really slow going. Would be nice if there were pointers or sectioned off rooms so I knew where I was and where I'm going.

Otherwise not bad for 2 days :D

alfie275 2018-08-24 19:25

Very interesting concept. Might be cool to have the 2D sections render to texture, and then have that texture on the rings (so you can see the actual level and enemies etc wrapped around the rings).

rahim-pxr 2018-08-27 00:45

Nice game, I hope to see more updates and improvments sooner. If you don't bother take a look at our game when we focused on Graphics and visuals and see the results that we got: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/spacelab-42

anlaxix 2018-08-27 19:12

Hey that was a really nice game, great job !

renier 2018-08-28 07:00

Well done ! loved the swapping of views mechanic and think this is a very visually appealing game would love to see more

repusv 2018-08-28 20:45

Good idea! The graphics are really good (well, especially the 3D)! The controls are very weird though (the plane changes direction seemingly randomly. It would be nice to move faster during the 3D mode. It has some potential :)

occultone 2018-08-28 22:07

(I Posted a post and it looks like my internet might have lost it, so if I accidentally double-post two semi-similar reviews, my apologies.)

Very interesting premise, swapping between the 2D and 3D World, I think there's some avenues for gameplay there that would be fascinating to see. The graphics were solid, and use use of the world as a texture projected on the Sphere and Torus were very neat: I'd love to see more done with that mechanic. 2D Controller was solid if a little slippery. 3D Controller was solid all around, I'd recommend maybe swapping out the Orbit Camera for a Follow Camera, but it works for showing off the visuals.

Constructive Criticism: Audio feedback would be handy, Screenshake and Screen Effects are things you could look at putting in to help guide the player (And juice it up!). The game has a solid premise, and interesting things done with the space.

bobismijnnaam 2018-08-30 13:48

Very interesting idea! The 3d mode was almost impossible to control but I really liked the idea of flying somewhere and then briefly dipping into the 3d dimension to jump over an edge of something, kind of like paper mario. I also liked the visual style and color palette that you used, it makes a game so much more pleasant to look at. The 2d controls were also wonky but that is precisely what made it fun to fly around in 2D!

yetman 2018-09-04 21:24

I should have replied a long time ago but I think it is better late than never.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I really appreciate it.

@brickkid512 You are right. I tried Explosions (Sound+Particles+Camera Shake) in another game and it really juices up the game a lot. I really should have added it here too.

@antoined73 I should have done what every respectable game does: Add an options menu to check/uncheck Inverted-Y.

@rob-cigna To be honest, I don't understand how the 3D camera works since I blindly used Cinemachine's Free look camera (Once again I was messing with powers I don't fully understand only to reach a mediocre result). I think there is a cooldown value so I will try it. Otherwise, I will probably implement my own camera instead.

@diaxcor I don't blame you. If I wasn't the developer of the game, I wouldn't have understood what the game was about.

@ramanujo I totally agree with your advice. However, being the shallow person I am, I usually can't work on other aspects before I feel at least a little satisfied about the look.

@ryanjavanshir I love the idea of switching between 8-bit and orchestral music. I will totally work on it once I start working on the music.

@purrfexionator I am sorry it didn't work well on your computer. I was expecting it to be heavy since I render 4 large render textures every frame to sample them on the 3D shapes and this part escpecially needs optimization (for example, skip rendering for textures of objects I can't see + render on smaller mips when I become far away from a 3d object).

@happyhour To be honest I didn't have well-thought plans for the 2D-3D mechanics. I was planning to use it to give the player some tactical advantage (skip walls or enemies in 2D by going from 2D to 3D then to 2D again, pick landing location in 2D based on where the enemies are to get some advantage over them). However my implementation was too shallow and the rest of the mechanics and scene design was not ready to explore the potential of this idea.

@mahalis yeah, it is ironic to add parallax scrolling when the world is actually meant to be flat. I still couldn't resist it.

@balka I was thinking of adding enemies that can go 3D too but I was not good enough to create another type of enemy and 3D AI during the jam.

@jiri-holzel Nice video, this is my first time watching Carl Sagan but this video has some inspiring ideas that I hope to add one day. About the ore, I just realized that they look like spikes after reading your feedback; I should really change how it looks.

@erikiene Thanks for the feedback. Keijiro is really one of the best Unity staff. I learned a lot about shaders from his repos on github.

@itsroyal The pointers is a really good idea. I also hope that the game will be less disorienting when each location gets a unique design that differentiates it from the others.

@alfie275 I actually use render textures but since the enemies tend to get clustered together (which is a problem in my AI), it becomes hard to notice them from the 3D world.

@repusv You can actually go faster in 3D by holding left mouse click (which is a weird control choice. I'm sorry). However, the speeding factor was not great so it feels subtle given the large size of the 3D spheres and tori.

@occultone You are right, a follow camera would be nicer than the current one. I initially wanted the player to be able to watch the 2D world while flying in 3D in order to plan his landing back to 2D but the camera ended up being to hard to control.

Also thanks @bibilega, @raivk, @mercerbox, @amour-du-pain, @epigramgames, @cristihkj, @rayne, @eatthepath, @shimage2, @baronb, @carlos-giraldo, @ventura, @anlaxix, @renier, @bobismijnnaam
