LD42 — Running out of space

Deadly Delivery by Rogue Studios 2018-08-18T00:43:25Z

It's a fun concept! Some points I noticed (some of which were mentioned by other reviewers): - Dodging the bullets in a turned based system is really cool and a lot of fun! Once you figure out how to dodge them, the game loses a lot of it's depth however. More bullet types are one option, or you could also perhaps add scoring bonuses like a speed bonus, or maybe add specific non-random designs for bullet/obstacle combos that give the player a puzzle to solve in order to deliver. Lots of potential with this idea - There really isn't an incentive to play the other maps beyond it being a different map. It's much harder to deliver on those, yet you get the same points. Perhaps boost the points for the more difficult deliveries somehow? - The RNG can screw you over if it blocks off all paths with boxes, which is a little disappointing for scoring but really not too much of an issue

Overall, well done I had fun unlocking everything :)

I enjoyed the look of the blocks. I like how the texture of the blocks worked with the geometry, and I thought the different types of blocks looked interesting together. As for the gameplay, my experience is essentially the same as ShockWire.

Really fun! Great take on the tower-defense genre, it really forces you to be strategic to even stand a chance. Only thing is it is quite challenging. Making one or two mistakes almost certainly means game over, even on "easy." (though I'm not especially skilled in these sorts of games, so take that with a grain of salt).

Others have said it, but the voxel art style is truly fantastic especially with the overall concept. It all works together very nicely, and I'd be delighted if you make a bigger version of this with more levels and perhaps some audio. Outstanding job!

Pretty fun and quite challenging. I love how the concept is so simple, yet it can be taken really far. Great atmosphere too

Simple and effective. I was confused at first because S and D moved the player, but W and A did nothing. The arrow keys worked though. Once I figured out the controls it was alright and I had fun blasting enemies off the edge of the screen.

It seems there are a few positions you can get in where it's completely unrecoverable no matter what, which could be a fun gameplay element if balanced properly. However, there are some instances where you spawn in such a position or get screwed into such a position by enemies randomly spawning in the wrong places, which is a little frustrating.

I like the general concept though and I think if you decide to do some post-LD refinement/expansion (Level design with obstacles? Power ups? New enemy types? New weapon types? Anything that adds more to the concept) this could turn into a really nifty game.

Nice job! This was pretty fun. Simple and effective! I also liked how the levels gradually got redder as they went on, that was a nice bit of atmosphere

Running out of Space by tom7 2018-08-18T00:19:54Z

Very neat! I like the adventure game style, and the art style goes great with it. I did find it pretty confusing to try and figure out what to do next, especially escaping the basement. Aside from the basement escape however, it was pretty okay, it's just that one part that I really struggled with. In terms of concept, I think it's awesome that you made an alien language for the game! In terms of gameplay, it was a bit off putting at first, but using the console solved that. I was also initially confused about the pea pods, but once I realized you couldn't interact with it it was fine.

I did however encounter an odd edge case where somehow the player got stuck in the pea pods and couldn't move until I reset the game. It only happened once, so I assume it's a rare glitch.

Overall, very nicely done! It was a fun experience, and I wouldn't mind seeing this fleshed out further into a bigger game.

Celestial Lacuna by bennyqbd1 2018-08-13T14:33:05Z

@alexkarate The theme-gameplay connection is the bullet density. More and more bullets get thrown at you so you quickly start running out of space to avoid getting hit :)

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

@the-sand Great suggestion about invulnerability frames! That would be a really useful addition. For now, the invulnerability time is 3 seconds after death if that helps.

@darkguardsman Thanks for the feedback and suggestions! For the patterns part, I'd like to mention that every single attack in the game *does* have an exploitable pattern to it, though it may not be obvious. I've actually cleared this without getting hit multiple times, and I don't consider myself some godly skilled player at these sorts of games, so it's definitely doable if you figure out the attacks. I do agree however that if I had more time to work on it, I should make the patterns easier to spot.

@timbelion Interesting. When you say it "doesn't work," do you mean the bullet goes over the player sprite but the player doesn't die? Because that's intentional. I realize this isn't completely clear, but the player hitbox isn't the entire sprite, just the small red dot on the ship's cockpit.

@cristihkj @antonin @justinmullin Thanks for playing! And thanks taking the time to leave a comment, I really appreciate it!

Inadequate Ark by Sean Turner 2018-08-18T15:43:13Z

The concept behind this is genius! Love the idea, and the game is a lot of fun as well. It's surprisingly well balanced, and the touch of humor is well done. Outstanding entry!
