LD30 — Connected Worlds

WorldLine by Jellycakes 2014-08-26T00:47:00

I really love the atmosphere. Using the phone to travel to other worlds gave it a magic-realist Myst vibe. I got stuck in the floating island level with the pine trees and rocks. I found three two-digit numbers and tried entering them in different orders but couldn't figure it out. This isn't a knock against the game - you've managed to intrigue me enough that I'll probably keep going back to it until I've figured it out (or find the answer online if I get too frustrated). You might try adding some subtle hints (maybe there were some, but they were too subtle for my brain).

Anyways, great job on a fine entry! I hope you keep adding to it post-compo.

Space Horror by arzi 2014-08-29T17:37:00

I'm impressed with what you were able to make in 48 hours. Needed some sound, and I couldn't figure out how to exit the game. I liked the random encounters on the various planets, it added some character to the experience.

Planetoid Pilgrim by defacid 2014-08-27T14:19:00

This has some real potential. It took me a little while to figure out what I was supposed to do, but once I got used to the controls and the way the player character moved, I quite liked it. I hope you'll continue working at it, I look forward to seeing more.

disconnected_worlds by cardboard 2014-08-26T00:58:00

Incredibly charming game! I love the art style and the wacky characters. My only suggestion would be to prevent the character from floating in certain areas, or just have the shadow move behind objects, to give a better illusion of depth.

Keep up the good work!

The Warehouse Connection by Jesper Oskarsson 2014-08-26T14:28:00

I like the style - the mist feels spooky and the design of the statues and portal adds to the creepiness. However, I didn't know until I quit and came to enter comments that the game was meant to be multiplayer-only. I spent a few minutes trying to figure out how to get the yellow statue to stay on long enough to get through. You should add a disclaimer, preferably within the game itself, that it is a multiplayer-only game. Adding some simple matchmaking would also go miles.
Great concept though!

Through the Trans-Dimensional Window by Charlie 2014-08-25T15:20:00

I like the use of a Fringe reference as the central mechanic. I was a little confused about what to do at first before I realized that the player was the little rectangle. I'm impressed with what you were able to do with the minimalist art and I like the transdimensional window idea a lot.

Greener Grass by CogentInvalid 2014-08-26T00:01:00

Incredibly challenging, but I kept coming back for more. I like the variety of objects you can use to help you on your journey.

Connected Worlds Training Facility by sftrabbit 2014-08-25T13:49:00

Nicely done. I like the art style and the game mechanic. Could do with some music. It was quite fun and engaging for its short duration. Hope you'll make some more levels post-compo!

Space Road Truckers by Zambini 2014-09-03T17:35:00

I like the UI and the controls are decent. Trading system is simple, which is good because I find sometimes these games make the trading complicated and I lose interest. Could do with some sound, though. Some kind of minimap would also be extremely helpful for navigating.
I like it - I hope you continue working on it!

Kosmovalse by the 2014-08-25T14:22:00

Chrome is reporting that your file is malicious.

Four Worlds by MrJavaFrank 2014-08-26T13:29:00

Really challenging, clever puzzles. A found the music a bit loud relative to the sound effects.

Overall, a fun and challenging game - good work!

Beyond The Horizon by Lazdo 2014-09-07T13:03:00

I got very excited seeing the title screen - it was very slick, but the main menu lacked the same degree of polish and the use of fonts was a little odd. The puzzles presented a decent challenge for the short length (I can't complain about that, my game was very short as well). While there are many games with a similar mechanic, you've managed to nail it with interesting level designs. Good work!

Shared Mass by mephisto 2014-08-26T13:45:00

I like the clean, minimalist style, but I'm a little unclear on how the filling mechanic works. I found the sounds a bit harsh. Great concept though!

Parallel worlds by Druid 2014-08-25T15:36:00

I found it extremely challenging without being frustrating. It reminded me a lot of McPixel, not just because of the artwork but also the brevity of the levels and some of the humor. That's not a bad thing! I hope you decide to continue development after the competition. I would like to see what other scenarios you can put these guys in. I love how everything causes the same death animation. Maybe you just didn't have time to add others, but I found it added to the dark humor of the game. Also, love the random car coming out of nowhere in the park scene. At first I didn't understand how I died.

Just one tiny bug I found while playing - when I first entered the park, the car sounds continued to play - I don't think that was intentional. Fortunately they went away after I died. My only criticism is that the car sound is a tad annoying.

Keep up the good work!

Danger Zones by skullum 2014-08-27T19:29:00

Clever, challenging, puzzles, and I can't complain about the core mechanic ;)

Great job on your first entry!

Teleporter Escape! by kyru 2014-09-03T19:12:00

I like the turn-based mechanic. The graphics and sound need some polish, but you managed to produce a lot of content in 48 hours. Are the levels procedurally generated?

AIlocation by Ping78 2014-08-25T14:39:00

I liked the connection to the theme, and the ability to take over electronics as a mechanic. I was however unsure what I was supposed to do in cyberspace. I went to the one glowy thing and it didn't do anything. I'm guessing you are supposed to visit both of them, but I went to wrong one first and was too frustrated to try it again, after surviving that gauntlet of jump puzzles. I think some hints or instructions about what you need to do in that section would help immensely and reduce frustration. Also, fewer jump puzzles :). Don't get me wrong, I think this game has some great potential and I really love the atmosphere. The visual effects are very well done too.
Look forward to future developments!

Towel Run by OnErrorResumeNext 2014-08-26T11:55:00

That was a lot of fun, and super hard! I like that there are multiple ways to solve the puzzles. Great sense of humor. The deaths are hilarious - I love how you can accidentally squash your counterpart with a tree. Fantastic.

Great work!

Ennaffa by MintArcade 2014-08-27T15:08:00

Nicely done. The cel-shaded graphics are nice, and I like how the audio tracks reflect the similarities and differences between the worlds. I did find the movement a bit sluggish, however. Overall, very cool, and I'm impressed with how much content you created in two days. I didn't finish the game but I'll definitely be revisiting this world!

R-elink: A link between worlds by RaycoSantana 2014-08-25T14:12:00

I really like your take on the FPS genre, and the use of "augmented reality" as a mechanic is very clever. I'm impressed with the level design and the variety of designs you were able to come up with in the short time. One post-compo suggestion is to add the ability to make the trees and flowers materialize like the platforms when you click on them - just for fun of course.
Great job! I hope you make this into a full game!

Close Your Eyes by nonetheless 2014-08-26T14:12:00

Graphics are crisp, clean and minimalist. Music is light and suitably creepy, adding a sinister atmosphere to an otherwise emotionless world. I like the hostile narrator too, it's a nice touch. This game has lots of character on top of a simple but incredibly effective mechanic. This is minimalism done right.

Great job!

Connected Retro Worlds by yodamaster 2014-08-25T15:01:00

Solid, enjoyable, and the challenge escalates nicely. I like how you connect the three different game styles. The pixel art is well-designed and gives it a nice retro arcade feel.

Escape the World by bogdanmaier49 2014-08-26T12:11:00

I really like the concept! It's a bit buggy though - when I clicked "back to menu" after dying, the game shut down. I also had a bit of trouble figuring out what I was supposed to do, even after reading the intro screen.

Needs some polish but the concept is solid!

Starlight by stephenhaney 2014-08-26T01:41:00

Hilarious characters, zany sense of humor. I love the focus on exploration. I couldn't stop playing until I found the last planet. I also like the way the ship moves - makes it easy to get around without overshooting the target.
Music is nice and fitting. My only complaint is that I could see the seams between the background tiles - I would recommend making the background static or have it scroll a lot slower than the planets. The planet textures are equal parts funny and beautiful. I love the Waldo planet! And the Death Star.

Great work!

In Phase by McFood 2014-08-26T01:11:00

Nicely done. Devilish puzzles :) I got a "game over" at the part with the arrows but I wasn't quite sure why. Otherwise it was an enjoyable experience.

I like that the characters have different abilities, and that they can swap between blue and orange in certain places.

Great work!

A Game of Worlds Colliding by Dx724 2014-08-25T23:21:00

I got a Java Exception when I tried to play it.

WORLDS 2D by fleegle2000 2014-08-26T10:58:00

@stephenhaney: I just added the .love file to the repository - if you have lua and Love2D you should be able to run it. Obviously that's not ideal, and I'll try to find a way to make an OS/X and Linux executable as soon as possible. Unfortunately I don't have either system readily available.

WORLDS 2D by fleegle2000 2014-08-26T15:54:00

Thanks to everyone for all of the great feedback. I am working on the post-compo version as we speak - I plan on adding many more levels.

WORLDS 2D by fleegle2000 2014-08-29T20:27:00

@badlydrawnrod and everyone else looking forward to more levels: I have been developing a post-compo version and have implemented all the features I had planned for release - I am now in the process of designing more levels and hope to release the post-compo version shortly.

Balance by miwuc 2014-08-26T16:14:00

This has some real potential. I like the environmental theme. I like the direction you went with the pixel art, giving the "pixels" an outline is a nice merging of crisp modern graphics with retro stylings. Audio is fitting. I found it a bit odd that I had to drop things into the abyss to make more energy - I think energy should be based on the sun, so you would have a certain amount of energy you could use per day and it would only replenish each sunrise. I couldn't tell if the sun/moon cycle had any function other than to look nice, so that would be a good way to make the cycle more meaningful. Just a suggestion.

Keep up the good work!

Thinkings by Lythom 2014-08-27T14:42:00

Very inventive, and clever use of famous quotes as hints to the solutions.

Gunship Diplomacy by blubberquark 2014-09-07T12:51:00

Nicely done, I really like the mechanic. It's neat to see how the web changes and rearranges as alliances shift. Great work!

LD31 — Entire Game on One Screen

Nihility by ChronusZ 2014-12-08T17:29:00

I like the concept but I did find the controls a bit odd - particularly how you move faster horizontal while jumping. Maybe that was intentional but it felt weird and unresponsive (even in the tighter-controls version, which I tried after playing through the compo version). Also, without spoiling the ending, I'm curious if that was intentional - if so I think you still need to provide some cue that the game is well and truly over and give some method of restarting. Graphics and sound are nice. Mood is suitable and the quotes are an interesting way to mask gameplay hints. I wasn't sure if those were quotes from other people or just things you came up with, but either way they were a nice touch.

Paws of Fury by ehtd 2014-12-13T17:35:00

Funny little game. I had fun while it lasted. Played it on my tablet so I just tapped the screen like mad - I imagine it's harder with the mouse. Like the art style, very charming.

Leaving by My Sweet Whomp 2014-12-10T02:43:00

Love the game but I couldn't figure out how to end it. I got to a point where the blobs were just trading the same things and didn't seem to be making progress. Oh well, that's on me. I thought it was a funny, cute little game, love the graphics.

Talking Heads by ponk 2014-12-08T02:33:00

Weird and wonderful. I love it.

Black Hole Surfer by tripleVisionGames 2014-12-08T21:11:00

Great visual effects, challenging gameplay. Great work!

Cursed Islands 2 by rzuf 2014-12-08T07:27:00

While the graphics need work (charming as they may be), this game has a solid RPG mechanic, and as a cat owner I can totally sympathize with the protagonist :) I haven't beat it yet but I have every intention of playing again to find out what happens.

S̹̺̣̤a͏͚̤͙ͅt͡e̖̣̬̥lli̭̬̳͈̟͖t҉ȩ̩̬̰ by lun 2014-12-11T02:30:00

Nicely done! The only thing I would suggest is to add more feedback when satellites collide - maybe an explosion animation and/or sound. Otherwise it's pretty sweet. Good work!

Hunt the Pixel by rjhunter 2014-12-08T03:45:00

I quite enjoyed myself and found the idea amusing. I liked the clues that the villain gave but sometimes I wasn't sure what he meant - he said "a bit pasty" and I wasn't sure if that just meant "pale" or a specific color. Small gripe. Anyway, I had fun and that's what matters most.

Make War, Not Science! by Budi 2014-12-20T02:53:00

Interesting. The computer opponent is pretty tough. Good game!

Snowman Stacker by dook 2014-12-08T06:10:00

I'm amazed at what you put together in 7 hours. Yes, the game is very simple but it works with the theme and the procedural generation of the hill really carried the game and kept me interested. It is very difficult to build a proper snowman but I wanted to keep trying. You definitely focused on the right things in the short time you had.

ATTACK ON RADMARS by radmars 2014-12-10T17:34:00

Had a ton of fun with this one. The art style and soundtrack are delightful. Mood is dark yet cute at the same time. Love how you have to use black holes to turn the missiles back on the bombers - very clever. Great work!

OUTRANGE by Snuux 2014-12-08T15:03:00

I see you opted out of the sound category, so the lack of sound didn't affect my score, but a little bit of sound would have gone a long way. Otherwise a fun little game - I always enjoy radial movement in games (though I may be a bit biased ;)). Graphics are clean and crisp, use of particles is nice, game is challenging. Good work!

Vibrant City by Anshul Goyal 2014-12-11T17:13:00

Fun little game. I found the aiming a little frustrating - I realize it's a sniper game but I felt there should have been a little more room for error - or maybe the targets could be a little larger. Otherwise great game with an interesting premise. Good work!

Laundry Day by Omiya Games 2014-12-11T04:03:00

Funny commentary on social gaming.

StealthMan by Bernhard 2014-12-08T17:02:00

I've never been a big fan of Pacman, but this game sold me on it. Pacman + stealth is an amazing combo. It is difficult to improve upon a classic but this definitely did it. Graphics are nice, lighting effects are great, audio is a perfect fit. I can't really think of anything to complain about ;)

Drunk Ninja Vs Alien by Maurogik 2014-12-08T15:22:00

I had a lot of fun with this! I had a few minor quibbles, such as the lack of an exit option (I had it fullscreen and had to Alt-F4 to quit) and text being cut off at certain 4:3 resolutions. But the concept is solid and its a fun, challenging, and somewhat random (in a good way) experience. Great work!

Patterns by paranoiks 2014-12-08T06:20:00

It's very difficult to innovate on the memory game genre but you did a fine job of it. I usually find memory puzzles boring but this one kept be interested because it was more spatial than games like Simon. The graphics were a bit drab but I get that you were going for minimalism. They did what they needed to do and nothing more. Overall, a solid game. Great work!

Galaxia by greysphere 2014-12-10T00:50:00

I can't stop clicking! Fun take on the "endless clicker" genre. I found the counter at the bottom quite amusing. Will definitely let this keep running in my browser. Graphics are clean and crisp, just the way I like it.

Orbitalis by acerunox 2014-12-08T15:32:00

An entertaining, hard-as-nails game that trolls you when you lose. Punishing but fun. My only complaint is the "3D" effect (I'm not sure if it's meant to be viewed with 3D glasses or not, but it's hard on the eyes) - it would be nice to have the option to turn it off. Otherwise, great work!

Dead Pixel by The Jahn 2014-12-08T17:33:00

Interesting premise, and a cool take on the "infinite runner" concept that fit the theme. Fun game, great job!

Pixplorer by Nega Drive 2014-12-11T22:19:00

This looks really good and I want to play it, but the loading page freezes on me. Any chance you could provide an executable?

Pixplorer by Nega Drive 2014-12-12T17:09:00

Nicely done. Graphics are crisp and vibrant and the zoom window is a nice touch. Pretty standard, but solid, platforming with great level design. Ending was a little unsatisfying, but I finished with only 23 gems so maybe there's something special if I get all 24? I will have to play again to find out... Great work!

Red & Iron by Zambini 2014-12-08T06:45:00

Overall I found it enjoyable. If there's one thing I could complain about its that I think the difficulty ramps up too quickly. Good work though!

Dwindling Fire by PlasterPhantom 2014-12-10T17:25:00

Graphics are amazing, sound is high quality, game has a nice dark mood reminiscent of Don't Starve. A few minor issues - text spacing is a bit off and controls felt a bit awkward. Otherwise a fantastic game!

Panic Course by Thommy 2014-12-11T17:52:00

Very interesting concept. I hope you continue to develop the game after the compo. My only complaint so far is the choice of font. Overall, great job!

snowlr by ViKing Games 2014-12-11T15:36:00

I see by the description that I am meant to be thoroughly confused. Somehow I managed to win (not sure what I did). Despite my confusion I had a lot of fun with this quirky little game. Kudos!

Derelict by Justin Mullin 2014-12-11T15:58:00

Very nicely done. Hard and creepy! Audio was suitably spooky but I found the volume a bit on the low side - I had to crank my speakers to hear anything. I also found the controls a little unintuitive and tricky to get used to. Graphics were simple but effective - the fact that I still don't know what that red block was gives me a chill and adds to the creepy atmosphere. I like the procedurally-generated rooms as well. Great work!

Jackin by eforen 2014-12-08T14:57:00

The lack of screen scrolling hampers gameplay, but I like the concept and the online component. I didn't have any luck guessing any passwords, but that's all on me!

Oscillation by MaddeMichael 2014-12-11T16:30:00

Great work! I like the progression and the graphics. The music loop is a little annoying and I found the fog at the screen edges a bit too thick/dark but it did help with the atmosphere. I liked the AI - I was getting a bit of a GlaDOS vibe and I kept expecting it to turn on me. Fantastic entry!

birdsong by managore 2014-12-09T22:28:00

Wow. It's hard to innovate on platformers but this blew my mind. I love how you handled the Entire Game on One Screen with the fish-eye lens - a great example of how constraints feed innovation. Lens effect aside, this is a solid platformer with a charming premise, Gameboy-esque graphics, and haunting soundtrack. Excellent work!

Harvestier by killthealias 2014-12-08T18:07:00

Very slick presentation, fun twitch game. Like the depth-of-field effect - I assume you used a shader for that? Anyway, very nice. Music is also high-energy and good quality, and fits the game perfectly. Graphics are really well done. Great work!

Cycle by vicious_br 2014-12-08T16:55:00

Wow, that was just a fantastic experience. I don't know where to start. Graphics and sound were incredible, game was addicting as heck - I had a really hard time pulling myself away to fill out this form. Definitely some Geometry Wars inspiration but that's not a bad thing at all. I like how you can respawn by collecting the lines, and the upgrades representing by increased number of sides. Really solid effort, I'm truly amazed you pulled this off in 48-hours - I could easily fool myself into believing it was a Jam entry. Difficulty is punishing but not frustrating, feedback is satisfying, controls were excellent. You should try to get this on Steam.

Pixel Pixie by Code White 2014-12-20T02:35:00

Interesting concept, difficult challenge.

Fabulous Escape by HolyBlackCat 2014-12-11T17:00:00

Really innovative entry! I liked the unique way of interacting with the environment, and the (spoiler approaching) bittersweet ending tugged at my heartstrings. Great work!

I am Sigma by GeeItSomeLaldy 2014-12-10T17:17:00

Good job overall. I love the central mechanic and the comments that the robot makes after encountering the various pitfalls. However, I did find the movement a little floaty and the graphics and audio could use a fair bit of polish. You more than made up for these drawbacks with an innovative mechanic and sense of humor. Great work!

Fido, Fiona & Fidel by pjimmy 2014-12-14T00:29:00

Fun and original!

InchAlpha by fil00dl 2014-12-08T06:31:00

Nice work, slick presentation.

Rescue the princess by eruiz00 2014-12-08T16:08:00

Difficult game - reminds me of Dark Castle a little bit - that's a good thing. I couldn't figure out how to find the treasure in the lake which I think might have made things more difficult for me. Graphics are retro but crisp and nice. I did have some control issues trying to play it on my tablet but it was fine on my computer. Swimming controls were a little frustrating. Overall, great work!

Planetiod by laluis1 2014-12-12T01:06:00

I like the concept - in-game instructions could be a little more informative, and the ending wasn't very satisfying. A little more feedback to the player would improve the experience immensely. Good work!

The Game About Space And Bravery by Praron 2014-12-08T18:31:00

I like the aesthetic - though I'm not a huge fan of the player movement. I found the game quite challenging. Good work!

Jumpy Box by Pierce_Z 2014-12-08T05:49:00

I found it much more engaging than Flappy Bird. While the graphics needed work, the procedurally-generated terrain kept me interested. For the most part I felt that the computer played fair though there were a couple spots where I questioned whether it was possible to navigate. Good work! I hope you continue to work on it.

All Is Lost by plauk 2014-12-10T22:25:00

Love this game. I'm a sucker for games with radial worlds but this does everything so well. I really like the sound design and the graphics are pretty good. My only complaint is the camera movement - it would be less disorienting if the camera rotated faster to keep up with the player's orientation, or even if it was just fixed on the player's orientation. Anyway, it's an excellent entry and I'm putting it in my top 10. Great work!

My Screen by Dimitri0xFF 2014-12-08T16:29:00

Interesting idea. Could have used a few more things to do. I couldn't really figure out a strategy to win - I was able to make it to day 5 before losing all my friends.

Solus by InToGames 2014-12-23T01:25:00

I really like the concept. My only complaint is that it starts out too hard. I like a challenge but I need to be eased into it.

Fill the bar by SMASH BASH 2014-12-10T22:12:00

Funny game, the AI is like a mashup of GlaDOS and the narrator in Stanley Parable. Short but great experience. I never saw the snowman, I'll have to play again to find it :). I only wish there was more to do. "Wise choose" - not sure if that was an intentional mispronunciation but it entertained me so that's cool. Great work!

Oh, rats! by Andrea 2014-12-08T18:18:00

Neat reference to SS13. Collision detection needs some work - I always get hung up on corners. Movement feels a bit sluggish. Good effort though!

Cobot by GameQuester 2014-12-11T22:26:00

I like the graphics but I found the controls a bit floaty. I found the lack of checkpoints personally frustrating but that's really just a matter of taste. Good job overall.

GraviFlip by oh_andrej 2014-12-29T00:38:00

Challenging but fun. I like the retro Gameboy-esque graphics. Nice little game.

Antimatter by Andynonomous 2014-12-08T03:22:00

Challenging game with nice visuals. Great first entry!

Literate by Mokosha 2014-12-10T17:53:00

Interesting concept. I wasn't really clear on what I was supposed to do until I read the post - there should be some indicator in-game of how to play. Even after reading the post I wasn't sure why I lost when I did. As @MiniBobbo said, the scoring and timer wasn't clear. Nice idea but execution needs a bit of work. Still impressive what you were able to do in 10 hours. Good work!

Core by MrSun 2014-12-08T17:40:00

Solid first entry! Really nice concept, graphics are simple but effective - minimalism done right. Hard as nails but not unfairly so.
I didn't have any issues with crashing that others reported.

Mountain Life by flouiz 2014-12-10T22:54:00

I'm simply impressed that you made a game with powerpoint. That said, it felt a bit lacking in the interactivity department, and the graphics could have been higher quality given that there's not much more to the game. Cool, relaxing experience though.

Daybloom by fleegle2000 2014-12-08T07:35:00

I'm sorry to hear that you're having difficulties - I am a Chrome user myself and I didn't get those warnings. You could try changing your security settings but other than that I'm not sure what to suggest.

Daybloom by fleegle2000 2014-12-08T16:33:00

rzuf: Yes, the mechanic is a little random and for the post-compo version I plan on tightening it up a bit more.

Daybloom by fleegle2000 2014-12-08T16:36:00

Bernhard: You could very easily play it with two players on the same keyboard :) That wasn't my intention but it's a really good idea. Multiplayer could be added in the post-compo version.

Daybloom by fleegle2000 2014-12-08T16:38:00

ChronusZ: Thanks for the feedback - I've been meaning to implement a dialogue system for one of my other games and decided that this would be a good opportunity to develop one. I will definitely be adding more dialogue possibilities in the post-compo version.

Daybloom by fleegle2000 2014-12-09T16:39:00

@TimtheBo: Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. I plan on adding more levels and features in the post-compo version, while maintaining the current aesthetic.

Daybloom by fleegle2000 2014-12-10T02:31:00

@Mokosha - I provided a single zip file with both the Windows and Linux files inside. There should be a Daybloom.love file in the zip - you need to have Love installed in order to run it.

Daybloom by fleegle2000 2014-12-11T15:28:00

@Justin Mullin: The goal is to strike a balance between the sun growing too large and becoming too erratic - I'll try to make it a bit clearer in the post-compo version.

Daybloom by fleegle2000 2014-12-11T18:09:00

@Divitos: not sure why you're getting that error - I know that some systems don't support the canvas system Love uses. It sounds like the error is happening on load so I suspect that is the case for you. Unfortunately there's not much I can do about it - sorry.

Daybloom by fleegle2000 2014-12-11T18:10:00

@5k0d: Yes, I need to provide a bit more feedback/less randomness. I plan on tweaking that in the post-competition version.

Orion by feiss 2014-12-08T16:22:00

Wow, I'm impressed with what you were able to get done in 48 hours. The cockpit graphics alone look like they would be time-consuming. As a fan of KSP, I really enjoyed this experience, and I liked having to fiddle with all the different controls - it felt like I was actually prepping for a launch. I'd love to know how you did the radio noises. Felt very authentic (well, other than seeing the Earth's atmosphere when I'm half-way to Mars ;)) But please continue working on this - it was a fantastic experience and I want to see more.

LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

Underground Hangovers by Deconstructeam 2015-04-29T17:29:00

Great entry! Graphics and audio are nice and consistent, mechanics are interesting and fun to play around with. My only complaint is that it is a little frustrating at times, but that might be more a reflection on my skill than anything. Overall this is a fantastic entry, and there is so much content for a 72-hour game.

FIRED by repstyle 2015-04-20T16:47:00

Don't be so down on yourself - it was a perfectly acceptable entry!
Visually it was quite nice and the concept was solid - I found the gameplay a little too easy but for LD it's better if they are easier so everyone can see it from start to finish.

*SPOILERS* I am assuming there is no way to "win" the game, correct? I got a score of 100 but I still got fired - I assumed this was intentional.

An Unconventional Weapon by Mathias Olsson 2015-04-22T23:01:00

Bit hard on the birds, no? Funny game, audio is pretty good, though I found the way the birds moved in relation to the road a bit unusual, and I wasn't sure that my accelerating was actually helping me get any closer to the birds. First car game I've played this competition - not sure that a car is all that unconventional a weapon, but hey. Anyway, good work!

Graze by Merigrim 2015-04-20T03:19:00

Interesting mechanic. I wasn't quite sure what was going on at first but that was just because I didn't read the instructions :) I only made it to the second level - it is quite challenging. Graphics and audio are nice! Good work!

Hugline Miami by Figglewatts 2015-04-22T00:29:00

Impressive, how much content you were able to finish in 48 hours, and all the polish that went into it. Faithful to the source material without being a copy. My only beef was having to force the game to close. Good take on the theme, excellent work!

ONE _RUDE_ PLANET by nihilocrat 2015-04-29T17:38:00

I like the concept but it is easy to get lost if you fly too far away. Also, when a planet is on an escape trajectory, the game should tell you when it gets too far to reasonably recover it and trigger the loss condition.

The morning type by Liam :D 2015-04-22T22:54:00

Of all the typing games I've played in the past, this one is definitely up there in terms of entertainment value. I only wish there was some sound :( Otherwise great job!

The Colonist by Jyrkface 2015-04-23T23:47:00

Fun twist on lunar lander. I feel like the goal could be made a little clearer in-game, but once you know what to do it's a lot of fun! Great work!

(mental)fairy by 0x0961h 2015-04-21T01:30:00

The graphics are really nice though I found there wasn't a lot to the gameplay. Audio is good but there's some weirdness when you return to the main menu and the level music continues to play over the menu music. This has some real potential - keep up the good work!

TRANSMATTER WHIRLMPOLE VACUUMBUSTER by CogentInvalid 2015-04-20T03:05:00

Great job! Simple controls, yet difficult to master. Nice work on the audio. Love the mechanics.

Symmetric Torpedo by francoisvn 2015-04-20T23:41:00

I wasn't exactly sure what I was doing at first, until I read the rest of the page. Once I realized what I was supposed to do it was pretty engaging and challenging. Graphics are clean and crisp. I found that one sound a bit harsh on my ears (I think it's the one that plays when a torpedo launches?). Otherwise a great entry! Keep up the good work.

Space Boy by Hyoga-3D 2015-04-22T15:33:00

I like the graphics and the style, audio is decent. My only real complaint is I find it difficult to tell the difference between getting hurt and successfully destroying an enemy - they are not visually distinct enough, and until I figured out what I was supposed to do I was a bit confused about why I died. But overall it was a good experience!

Fathom by Joe Williamson 2015-04-23T18:33:00

The extra day was worth it! This is an incredibly polished experience with tight gameplay and clever puzzles. Turns bullet-time into an art form. Graphics and audio are top-notch. Great work!

Commando Kibbles by bakpakin 2015-04-21T15:04:00

Love the artwork, and the audio is decent, game flows nicely and the mechanic is fun, though I wasn't a fan of the control scheme. Pressing down to fire was a bit awkward - if you replace down with space that would fix it.
Great to see another LOVE game! Very well done!

You Can Shave the Baby by chikun Dev Team 2015-04-22T16:22:00

I always loved the zany weirdness of Wario Ware - it's nice to see a more "mature" version. Great combination of funny and weird. No complaints - even the terrible graphics are perfectly suited.

BeatFace In Space by DrPrettyPatty 2015-04-22T17:01:00

I like the concept, graphics, music, humour. Very nice little game. My only beef was that I found the movement awkward, even in easy mode without having to worry about keeping to a beat. I wish the controls were more precise. Otherwise a solid entry. Great work!

SLICK LICKER by KodingNights 2015-04-20T17:33:00

Interesting take on the theme. I had a hard time figuring out what was going on though, as there is so much happening on the screen at once, and the music was a bit grating (and I'm forced to listen to it on repeat while I fill out this comment). Concept seems pretty solid though. Nice work.

Calling Mr. Blacksmith by Junber 2015-04-22T16:03:00

I found the controls a little unintuitive, but then text-based roguelikes have never been known for friendly controls. Even just letting me hit "enter" to confirm a menu selection would be a great improvement. Other than the controls, it's a great idea and a fun little game. Good work!

Can You Reach the Sun? by Garris 2015-04-26T01:32:00

Good clean graphics, unique choice of weapon and interesting use of it. I noticed a bit of weirdness jumping next to ledges, and the difficulty might scale up a bit too quickly, but otherwise a great entry!

Mass-X by hexagore 2015-04-20T20:43:00

Very nice! My only complaint is that I find the difficulty scales too quickly, though I do like how you've handled progression. Tip: don't draw attention to the fact that the first level is a tutorial.

Graphics and sound are nice - I like the use of shaders and the sound effects and music are fitting. Controls are pretty solid though it is very difficult to keep up with the screen movement, and while I understand this is part of the challenge I wonder if the controls might be a little too hard to master.

All around I really enjoyed the experience. Keep up the good work, and I hope you release more levels in a post-compo version.

Quest For The Orb of Toz by Orange 2015-04-21T00:42:00

A winner is me!

Hey, great job. I can't find anything to complain about. This is a solid entry with nice retro graphics, I love the use of your head as a weapon. There's a bit of a Cave Story feel to the character design and the soundtrack. The boss makes you bring your "A" game without feeling overpowered. Very cool. Keep up the good work!

Slime Quest by XeroCake 2015-04-20T17:20:00

FYI: the Windows download only gives you the .exe but you need to include the data folder too in order for it to run.

Pygmy's Sticky Stick by Majsmanne 2015-04-20T16:38:00

A very odd little game, but in a good way! I liked the stacking mechanic, it reminded me a little of Beautiful Katamari.

A Knife Made Of Whispers by managore 2015-04-25T20:00:00

Another excellent entry! Moody, solid mechanics, nice combination of modern shaders and retro graphics/audio. Love your work - keep knocking them out of the park.

Fungual Sizing by Maxom 2015-04-23T15:20:00

The grow/shrink mechanic is really clever and well-executed. I think the instructions could be a little clearer that you can throw the pellets at enemies to grow or shrink them. It didn't take long to figure it out, but the way the instructions are phrased makes it sound like you can only grow or shrink yourself. A little bit of audio would be nice too, but I can't judge you on that :) Anyway, great work! You're definitely onto something.

Introspection by rlangewi 2015-04-21T18:12:00

I liked the art style and the demotivational messages as enemies. Good work!

Moss by uvwar 2015-04-21T01:19:00

Nice relaxing break from all the action games! It's a nice moody title, great to play on a rainy day, which in my case it is. Maybe I just didn't play around with it long enough, but it would be cool if there were more little secrets and interesting structures to, er, moss up. The depth blur was nice. I agree with @stevenlr that being able to change camera direction would be nice.

Great work!

Quantum Fields by Mathieu Muller 2015-05-05T20:22:00

I like the mechanic, and there's a fair bit of polish. Game is challenging and there is enough variation in the various threats presented to keep me engaged. I'm not sure if there's an endgame or if it's meant to be endless. The game over could be a little more dramatic, I suppose. A solid entry with nice graphics and sound.

The Bipolar Cat by Cowa 2015-04-20T16:29:00

I wasn't really sure what to do... you could clarify what the meters above the people mean. An interesting use of the theme nonetheless.

LiceCity by Blister 2015-04-21T14:57:00

Great job! Graphics and sound are nice, game fits the theme well. Gameplay is really challenging. Fantastic entry!

BattleFood by bufferoverflow 2015-04-20T16:56:00

Interesting take on the theme - brings me back to highschool. You guys should keep working on it, it has potential.

Oh Sh!t by Andynonomous 2015-04-20T18:05:00

There's a surprising amount of depth for a joke game! Some kind of visual indicator of direction and power for the "pull back to fire" mechanic would be helpful though, even if it's something really simple. Brings me back to my days of playing Rampage.

Deadly rain by Sublustris 2015-04-21T18:30:00

Nice graphics and sound, social commentary. I find the gameplay a bit random. It highlights the randomness of war, I guess, but it feels a bit unfair. Otherwise a great entry!

An Unconventional Weapon by Rulrite 2015-04-26T23:20:00

Nice concept, graphics are great. I did find that the background changed a little too quickly into happy land. It would have been nice to see a more gradual change, maybe localized around the player to encourage exploration. Overall a great entry!

BLODAU by BlindSkyStudios 2015-04-27T13:35:00

I like the art style, though I found the gameplay very short and not very innovative. It's a good first entry though!

Go Shoot Yourself by TheScopelessOne 2015-04-20T16:24:00

Nice use of the theme. Definitely hard to get used to trying to get hit while not trying to hit the other. A single-player mode would have been nice though... Good work!

MagDef by jhell 2015-04-20T19:42:00

I like the concept, the simple mechanic but increasingly complex gameplay. Graphics are nice and crisp. I wasn't a huge fan of the music and I thought the difficulty curve for the boss a bit steep. Otherwise, great entry!

Hacked by Nate 2015-04-26T18:36:00

Good typing practice! The sound is a bit annoying, but otherwise it's a nice, simple entry with good progression.

Evil Cupido: Haters gonna hate by Pixel Heart 2015-04-22T00:47:00

Pretty clever, fun game that's just a little messed up, but in a good way. Great job!

Eyed by Marek Lisý 2015-04-20T17:39:00

I wasn't quite sure what I was doing, plus I didn't have a second player handy so it was hard to evaluate. I like the graphics though, and the weapon is certainly unconventional.

Solar Swing by Kryptarchy 2015-04-22T15:25:00

I like the concept but found navigating a bit awkward. Zooming out at faster speeds might have made it easier to deal with. Anyways, you should keep working on this - good work!

NO TIME TO EXPLAIN: GET IN THE LLAMA by Nidar 2015-04-20T17:15:00

First of all, everyone who is complaining that the web player doesn't work - the web player doesn't work with Chrome anymore so that's your issue.

Now on to your game: Hilarious concept. Graphics and sound could use a bit of work, but I had fun with it and it definitely fit the theme. Good work!

F.U.M.S (Fucked Up Missile System) by ElectroYak 2015-04-21T18:02:00

An excellent first entry - kept it simple, strong core mechanic, no extra fluff getting in the way. Great job!

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-20T16:05:00

Thanks! Yeah I didn't have enough time to really flesh that part out.

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-20T17:23:00

@Marek - thank you for bringing that to my attention. The blob graphics rely heavily on the GPU as they are almost entirely shader-based. That could have been the issue. I have an older machine and my graphics card is not the greatest but I didn't have any issues, and I also use Win7, so I'm not really sure why it was lagging so much for you. Thanks for trying anyways!

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-20T17:25:00

@DKoding - thanks for the feedback. Yes, I was a little concerned that people might have trouble with the controls, which is why I put the "F1 for help" prominently on screen - definitely something I'll be working on making a bit clearer in the post-compo version. Thanks for playing!

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-20T18:38:00

@SwizzMan: thanks for the feedback - yes, I was a bit concerned people might have issues figuring out what to do. I will be sure to make the controls more intuitive and make the instructions clearer for the post-compo version.

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-20T18:51:00

@Dohxis: My apologies, I don't have a Mac handy. I will try to make a Mac version available soon.

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-20T19:08:00

I just added a port for the Mac :)

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-21T03:04:00

@xbcw: Hmm, I'll have to look into that - I don't have a Linux box set up so unfortunately I can't test it. I'm glad you were able to get it working in wine, though. Thanks for playing!

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-21T03:20:00

@iapc: yeah, there are definitely some balance issues I still need to work out. I simply ran out of time.

@uvwar: Yeah, if I'd had more time I would have made it a bit clearer what you're supposed to do and added more feedback. Some of the weapons have no effect. To figure out how effective a weapon is, you have to fire a single part at the blob to get its effectiveness rating. I apologize for not making that clearer.

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-21T13:29:00

@jhell: you probably encountered the bug where the goo sometimes doesn't disappear from the screen even though it is gone. The bug is due to the way the shader code works - I tried to squash it but ran out of time. It will be my priority when working on the post-compo version.

Thanks for the feedback!

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-21T18:35:00

@Timm638: You're right, it doesn't show the overall effectiveness of the weapon, although you can find out the effectiveness of each part by shooting a single part at the blob, and from that determine approximately how effective the weapon is. I was going to add an overall effectiveness rating but ran out of time. The post-compo version will include that information. As for not seeing where the goo is, there is a bug where sometimes goo doesn't disappear. Once again, I will fix that for the post-compo version.

Thanks for playing!

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-21T21:14:00

@badlydrawnrod: Thanks for the feedback - yes, there is definitely room for improvement on the balance side of things. Sometimes you get lucky and get a good weapon at the start and it's too easy, but if you have bad luck it can be nearly impossible to beat. So I'll be spending some time working on balance for the post-compo version.

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-22T21:55:00

@Yakka: there are some balance issues I need to work out still. Basically the way it currently works is when parts are combined, the falloff of the effectiveness of each part reduces at a lower rate. The average effectiveness of the parts is what determines how much a weapon harms the blob. Usually, if the effectiveness is above 50 it pretty much wipes out a blob block.

@MoogleSensei: stay tuned for the post-compo version - I haven't released it yet but I have already improved the feedback immensely, plus solved some other major bugs.

Thanks for playing!

U.C.O.N. by fleegle2000 2015-04-23T17:15:00

@DrPrettyPatty: There is an end-game - unfortunately once the blob gets to a certain size it is really hard to push it back, so if you have the misfortune of getting bad weapons early on it can be very hard to regain control. This is definitely an area I intend to improve upon - there wasn't nearly enough time to get the balance where I wanted it.

I appreciate your feedback - thanks for playing!

Cornflake Ninja by badlydrawnrod 2015-04-20T17:05:00

I liked how it fit the theme, and that you actually had to play like a ninja to progress. I found it challenging but I always felt that it was my fault, not the game's, so that's good. Definitely work on a post-compo version to improve the graphics and sound - also add a "quit" button for those of us not using a web player :) Otherwise, fantastic entry!

The Reviewer by kyyrma 2015-04-20T18:34:00

Very clever, very meta :) I really liked it. Kind of gave me a "Papers, Please" vibe. I like how you have to balance your schoolwork and reviewing - I ended up being a better student than reviewer. I found the game very challenging but never unfair. Graphics were low-res but stylish and effective. Really communicated the pressures on video game reviewers from all sides. I'm amazed at how much content you were able to get done in two days. Great work!

MEGATON by Sytech 2015-05-04T20:35:00

I like the retro style and the cold war theme (though it's not very cold in your version of events). I don't really have anything to complain about - I think it fits the theme okay. Good work!
