LD55 — Summoning

Bergmål by Ava Skoog 2024-04-29T15:45:52Z

Are you planning to develop this further in some form? As a proof of concept this is absolutely incredible. I love the visual style and the way it's paired with a clue/deduction style gameplay. As someone who plays a lot of adventure games this is legitimately exciting to me. Your modest disclaimer made me think the game was literally broken in some form but no, it's just short, as jam games typically are. It's honestly pretty feature complete in that sense, and impressively polished. Just, awesome work all around. I hope you'll be able to flesh this out further in a full game if that's something you'd want to do.

Flower Run by jk5000 2024-04-19T08:42:23Z

Neat and simple!

Virtual Church of the Digital Goddess by Geckoo1337 2024-04-26T14:43:49Z

Incredible entry. Solid puzzle mechanics, slick graphics, and loads of content (puzzles). You even went the extra mile and implemented a rewind feature with VFX to match. Love it.

You Are Gnome-Caller by uvwar 2024-04-25T14:18:08Z

This game is high art. It's so good it froze my browser on the first try (I wouldn't have it any other way). Those background sounds are particularly amazing.

Demon Burger by JOrbits 2024-04-19T11:28:04Z

I love this so much. I couldn't wrap my head around it at first but then it was just one "aaaah" moment after another. Lovably silly premise, and the 90s era graphics are just gorgeous.

Clone fest by Tori 2024-04-18T10:19:31Z

This raised more questions about the ethics of cloning than the movie The Prestige. Great game (graphics are lovely), I was laughing hard at my inability to jump across a tiny gap because of the hundreds of clones I'd spawned from my ingrained instinct to just hammer the jump button...

ManaFest by johnnysix 2024-04-26T12:34:18Z

Lovely entry! The art and animations are particularly great (the landing one is adorable). The gameplay is really fun too. My only complaint is that at certain points it feels like I'm only allowed to spawn blocks when it makes sense, rather than allowing me to fail. For example on the second level when you're supposed to spawn pillars and then a moving platform to cross a gap, I thought I was either doing something wrong or had discovered a bug when I couldn't spawn a platform before I stacked the pillars up to the proper height. If I recall, the camera didn't pan all the way across the gap so I couldn't see how high I needed to be. I think I would prefer full freedom to fail horribly and learn that way.

Really strong entry all in all. The fact that you went the extra mile to have the game work on mobile is incredible.

Necrunmancer by Adam Martin 2024-04-25T12:53:09Z

Fun little game. It might be really neat if the background environment changed up a little the farther you got into it. Different enemy types to match too. Lots of fun stuff you could do with this as a full game. I loved the visual style too.

Tristram by Rongo Matane 2024-04-17T14:20:10Z

Holy crap this is polished. For the love of god, change whatever you have to so Blizzard doesn't sue you, add a bit more content, and release this on Steam!

Blood From a Tome by GuitarBro 2024-04-26T17:45:52Z

Nice job! I'm not big on card games owing to the toll they put on my swiss cheese brain (though I admire the genre) but the mechanics in this were pretty straightforward. I found it a little hard but not unfair. It would have been nice to have a highlight effect or tooltip show up when you hover stuff you can interact with. Like when you're in between events and you have to pick a card and then click on a slot (had to read the comments to learn what I was doing wrong).

The graphics are really nice. Makes me nostalgic for the 90s and its wonderful obsession with prerendered visuals.

Monster-Maker Pro: Home Edition by Tad 2024-05-02T15:32:15Z

It took me a little while to really take in and fully appreciate the absurdity of the premise. The gameplay itself is neat but wrapping it in this courtroom setting was a stroke of genius. I also do love me a good mix of 2D and 3D. Honestly, with some tweaks to the gameplay and some added content, you could totally expand on this premise further if you guys wanted to. Make an absurd legal puzzler set in a world with demons and magic.

Night 333 by MaiMai 2024-04-22T16:17:38Z

Really chill. I'd love to see a full game with these hover cars where I could just roam around a ton of different environments with some kind of music blasting (and not necessarily synth wave). Maybe complete some kind of objectives if I wanted to. Honestly there's probably so much you could do with hover cars as a core premise.

The Ghost of Leo by kabloosh 2024-04-26T12:20:44Z

Short and simple, nice job! Things like the pickup animation when you're harvesting resources was a really nice touch. I love the use of minimal graphics.

Bean and Brew by RunicPixels 2024-04-19T10:35:17Z

Everything about this is really well rounded. I love the 2D/3D blend.

Dachi in the Game World by yellow 2024-04-18T13:36:37Z

This...is pretty awesome. It's such a simple but incredibly effective concept, and surprisingly hard (almost feels like I'm trying to shave and brush my teeth simultaneously).

Hell's Gate Café by Beebo Studios 2024-04-25T13:48:53Z

TIL leaving surplus food spread around on the floors, just in case, is a viable business strategy. Great little game, and incredibly well polished too on all fronts.

Dungeon Evoker by VPhyre 2024-04-17T18:22:20Z

This was a lot of fun. The graphics, audio, style, it all hangs together really well. Maybe just have the bosses start flipping out a little the closer you get to beating them to give you a sense of progress / intensity? (Toss more enemies at you, bounce around erratically etc.)

The Demon Ate My Homework by very dark lord 2024-04-26T13:19:38Z

Fun little romp. The humor and graphics really sell this. Reminded me a lot of Magicka with its silly character quirks.

(Side appreciation: I love that items bounce back to you if you accidentally toss them to an unreachable area.)

Dicey Demons by UkuleleFury 2024-04-19T09:02:05Z

*Spawns a strong chungus*. This was fun. I love this mix between 2D and 3D. Might be interesting if you were penalized in some way for having too many dice in your inventory, or too many of a certain type. As a proof of concept though this is awesome!

Glyph Tower by YogurtTheHorse 2024-04-18T12:53:33Z

Took me a moment to get a feel for what I was doing wrong but then I really got into it. Absolutely love the core mechanic. Reminds me a lot of Magicka, except I didn't explode myself 90% of the time. The aesthetics are awesome too!

Diner Dash by OgelGames 2024-04-18T10:59:20Z

This is elegant simplicity at its finest. Awesome job!

FRIED AWAY by Kyrios 2024-04-18T13:47:40Z

This made me laugh like an idiot for a solid 2 minutes when I started playing it. Even the occasional bug (I think I fell through the deep fryer thingy) kinda fits the tone too well for me to get frustrated over it. Just... -chef's kiss- on the humor. (Made me super hungry too.)

Phantom Escape by S1l3Jamal 2024-04-26T13:34:15Z

Man this is a neat idea. I've always loved that gimmick in games where your character is stuck and they have to remotely control something to escape (like take off their head/a lib or use a remote device). Definitely pairs really well with stealth. Great job!

Salmoning by kuviman 2024-04-17T16:21:09Z

TIL fish people drive on the wrong side of the road.

Penguinology by Smidgens 2024-04-17T14:41:30Z

@zerolarih You played it correctly. The fault is mine. I accept full responsibility for the complete lack of penguin placement options and profusely apologize. The idea that you can pick up a penguin and not have the freedom to drop it anywhere you want is kind of ridiculous - any player worth their salt will pick up on it. Thank you for your nice words, though! (The rest of you as well. )

Penguinology by Smidgens 2024-04-17T17:20:19Z

@arti-dev Thanks! (The scroll wheel *should* adjust the sensitivity by the way.)

@sodagummy penguinomics.jpg

Penguinology by Smidgens 2024-04-19T15:10:39Z

@callmety The penguin vibing you describe is what we in *the biz* call *Procedural Penguinization*. It is absolutely intentional and not at all a result of a glaring absence of hints or poor design. -cough-

@risminator goodfellas.meme 🤌

(Big thanks to all of you for propping this silly thing up!)

Otherworldly Mercenary by RENCURELI 2024-04-26T18:13:00Z

I don't think I played it right but I loved the low poly graphics and overall presentation. Impressive stuff to be making almost from scratch.

Demon 91 by c-13mu 2024-04-26T13:04:50Z

Really neat little puzzler. I love the hand drawn style of everything. Makes me nostalgic for those old flash games you'd get around to in your school computer lab. Great stuff.

I'm also glad I came back for another look. I played this a few days ago and if I recall there wasn't audio (and there was a progression bug on one puzzle, but that didn't affect my opinion or rating). Thanks for the improvements!

Decades And Dragons by Ein 2024-04-26T11:25:18Z

This is painfully realistic...

Summonion by KeithSwanger 2024-04-18T10:50:46Z

Pulling onions out of a bully's line of fire is not a thing I've seen before in a game (only weird arthouse movies). Good stuff!

Summoning Guidebook by Sariiger 2024-04-19T09:59:25Z

Awesome little demo. Yeah, the collecting part did get a little grindy (maybe just increase the run speed or rejigger the inventory) but the core idea is damn solid. I loved experimenting with the combinations. I also applaud the use of minimal graphics. I imagine it'd have been so tempting to go overboard with graphics but you obviously prioritized the concept. (Not that the low poly style isn't great, it is!)

Summoning Guidebook by Sariiger 2024-04-20T11:51:43Z

@sariiger That's incredible. It took me months to properly get used to the Blender's interface when I started learning it and even then I could barely make anything usable.

Burdemon by Teun de Vries 2024-04-19T15:34:19Z

Lovely little roguelike! I'm impressed you went the extra mile and included a cutout effect for walls when the player is obscured. Everything feels so polished. I also like how in lieu of giving the character a running animation, he's just surfing on a [expletive deleted] cloud - nice and simple.

Bestiarium by retrome 2024-04-25T14:46:40Z

Beautiful art. Discovering the combinations was pretty fun, though it started leaning a liiiittle towards tedious nearing the end with needing to remember some of the combinations. Might be nice to have a spell book that fills up as you discover new ones. My strategy near the end whenever I summoned a new type of resource gatherer was to keep summoning it until I had a hefty surplus of the resource and so wouldn't need to remember the creature combination later in case it disappeared. Awesome jam effort though!

A cake from beyond by Nuanda79 2024-04-18T10:43:14Z

I always appreciate good Day of the Tentacle esque shenanigans. Really liked this game and loved the graphics. As an adventure game aficionado, maybe the only thing I'd bring up is that usually you're able to pick up anything, regardless of whether you need it in the moment or not. Saves you from having to remember where to pick things up, and there's something funny about picking up a seemingly useless thing early on and only having it pay off at the end. To be fair though, you would need to add extra dialogue or tooltips to make all of that work. You guys did great all things considered!

Tower Of Madness by Chiara Sanviti 2024-04-26T12:55:15Z

Incredibly well made game. The aesthetics are absolutely gorgeous and everything ties so well together. Whatever flaws there are have probably to do with difficulty balancing and niche usability quirks, but even in those areas the game is ridiculously polished. I would never judge a 3 day jam game harshly for imbalance or usability but damn, I barely have to think about that stuff with this one. I'd love to see this on Steam one day!

Parmigiano Rolliano by LiquidFunk 2024-04-27T21:52:43Z

In our lives, I think we've all felt like a wheel of cheese at some point, rolling down a hill, being chased by crazed cheese connoisseurs of all sizes.

Not much to say really. Top marks. I love this. Simple concept beautifully executed. My friend Sheogorath approves!

Spawn Shop by Donamougou 2024-04-18T09:58:14Z

I love the adventure game vibe this has going on. It would be helpful I think if the items had descriptive tooltips when you hovered them. I wasn't quite sure what some of them were / what their purpose was (what's in the flasks etc.), so I didn't know if they'd be appropriate ingredients for the ritual.

Demanager by satacat 2024-04-26T11:49:27Z

Gorgeous art and vibe. The audio tape (and the play/pause buttons) was a nice touch. Great entry!

The Royal Writ by Save Sloth Studios 2024-04-18T14:13:07Z

It's bonkers how polished this is. I feel almost bad to be playing it for free. Card-based games tend not to be my thing - I space out so quickly - but I'm really enjoying this one. The art and general aesthetics are so damn good too.

Monster Food Truck by AutumnL1 2024-04-18T10:04:26Z

Took me a while to figure out how to not serve just infants but this was fun. Neat concept and aesthetics!

Sumo nin': Demolition Experts by Pandalk 2024-04-25T14:56:32Z

Neat little tech demo! I just wish I could launch the sumos even faster, almost like a cannon.

Summon Proof by adrmille 2024-04-26T14:17:49Z

I ended up watching and studying the game more through the video than playing it as I wasn't sure what I was meant to do or what things were. I think I sort of get it now but I'm not sure I could have discovered the how without using brute force. It's definitely a neat concept though. There's an element of discovery and pattern matching in there that I tend to love in puzzle games. Maybe some decorations (textures, props, lights...) as Fenix131113 mentions would have helped to give you a better sense of the room. It's an interesting entry for sure!

Whispers of Lyra by milq 2024-04-27T22:50:26Z

Last time I trust a tutorial bird. Awesome entry. Everything about this is just lovely. The last level was a little grueling but still fun, and the music is just wonderful. I love how the abilities escalate too, "Here, have some tiny pellets...and also this giant laser shooting beholder".

Fiesta De Las Quimeras! by Jean-Francois 2024-04-17T15:15:07Z

Some fantastic 90s adventure game vibes going on in this!

Portal Me Away by StudioCherno 2024-05-02T15:46:34Z

While the controls are a bit awkward (camera angle, floaty movement; definitely could use some polish), it screams potential. What 3D models there are are really nice and I can somewhat glimpse a fun game in there. I also wouldn't have realized this was a custom game engine if not for the comment by Klemmbaustein. I kinda wish there was a scale for technical feats for cases like this. I'll definitely be keeping my eye on the engine in the future!

FoodieBuddie by Duhan 2024-04-22T16:47:14Z

Neat little game! The art is easily favourite part but there's a nifty little gameplay loop in there too. It took me a little bit to understand how the game is meant to be played. I tried to study the tutorial screen the best I could but I had to experiment for it to sink in that dropping food into the area next to the wizard turns it into a buddy. An interactive tutorial or on screen hints might have helped. (Maybe if things you hovered showed tooltips?) On the whole though, damned impressive for a jam game!

Creature Conjurers by Tao Yuanyue 2024-04-19T09:10:59Z

Discovering all the combinations was really fun. I'd love to see a full game utilizing this mechanic (and in this style), for example an adventure or puzzle game. The art is great.

Uncanny Inscriptions by Juss 2024-04-26T11:20:15Z

I absolutely loved the graphics and atmosphere (especially after seeing that post from the artist showing how the sprites were done). I really like the concept too in theory, but I definitely needed some hints on how to play the game. I had to glance the explanation in the comments to get me going. A one page tutorial infographic with an explanation along the same lines would've worked just fine.

Blind experimentation could definitely have worked, but the problem is that there's no way to undo or erase steps in the drawing process. I would draw one part of a sigil, the light would change, and then I'd draw the next part and it would be wrong and I'd have to start over. So some sort of undo/erase feature would be nice. The freeform drawing was impressive to me technically too, but I wonder if it wouldn't be nicer to play if the cursor automatically snapped to the points on the board (almost like the Android lock screen puzzle).

All in all though, cool entry!

SKELEMANCER by deadjolly 2024-04-22T17:23:03Z

Fun concept! I loved the UI art and the player model.

Some thoughts: - It might be nice to have a targeting indicator on the ground where the player is pointing (arrow, shadow, etc.) to give you a clearer sense of control. - I'd have loved a way to teleport quickly to the other castle, even at the expense of souls. - I often found myself wishing I could sacrifice minions and resummon them at the other end quickly, even if I'd lose half my minions doing so. - Maybe add a simple summoning animation to the hand to make the action feel more responsive (like a clenched fist or wiggling fingers)?

All in all though, nice job!

🐑 S.H.E.E.P - Sheep Hell Emissaries, Eradicate Purity 🐑 by Shenoit 2024-04-26T13:58:48Z

I can't decide if it's a feature or a bug that summoning a giant, muscular sheep should tank performance for a couple of seconds, it feels legitimately fitting.

Fun little game all in all. I like how deciding between gates seems like a no-brainer at first but then becomes a balancing act when they start stacking and you get fences between them.

Summoner Kit Simulator by Francois Dervaux 2024-04-18T13:20:16Z

Neat, relaxing little concept. If you wanted to, you could totally expand this into a full game with all kinds of different kits and variations. Good job!

Control wise it might be nice if the cutters were pinned to the bottom of the screen so you could just drag them out, use them on your focused item, and then they'd just snap back to the bottom. Might also be nice if you could drag the plastic frames out of view once you've emptied them (zoom out and throw them into a bin?). The controls were definitely a little touchy but for me it had mostly to do with those two things (failing to select the cutter or accidentally selecting an empty frame).

Cat Good, God Bad by yigoo 2024-04-19T09:18:37Z

I had to restart a few times cause the camera kept getting pushed out of frame, but this was really neat. I don't think I've ever seen this exact sort of thing done in a game before. I'd love to see this expanded in a full game where loads of elements in the frame are interactive and you have to cleverly puzzle your way past it. (The art is just gorgeous.)

Evocation by kanity 2024-05-03T20:33:34Z

I don't usually play visual novels and feel like I'd be a poor judge of the genre but this was surprisingly great, and clearly very ambitious and polished. I particularly love the way you use sound and timing. The distorted voices, the vivid sound effects. There were a few beats in there where the audio seamlessly melds with the art and animations and it legitimately freaked me out a little. Honestly, top marks for effort on all fronts, this was incredible!

Evocation by kanity 2024-05-03T20:48:05Z

@kanity You know, now that you mention it, I did get a little the adventure game vibe in there with the interactions (definitely a big fan of that genre). And I should have added too - the mood and atmosphere is just fantastic. You really nailed that unnerving vibe.

Burn with me by Nozomu57 2024-04-19T10:20:38Z

Brilliant game. I screwed myself so many times by accidentally sacrificing neighbour cards but kept coming back for more. I'm usually not that into card based games. The aesthetics are beautiful.

Exorcist Pianist by Aviv Levy 2024-04-26T13:14:44Z

Beautifully minimal graphics and concept. If I was teaching game design I'd use this as a prime example of a well scoped idea and solid follow through.

Haunted Cartomancy by Norah 2024-04-16T08:49:51Z

Shame about the bug (would love another try ~~if~~ when you get it fixed) but the aesthetics in this are great. The mechanic of picking out thematic objects in the scene and playing them as cards is pretty nifty - the whole premise is really neat. If you wanted to you could totally expand this into a full game (maybe you already have and we're seeing a slice of it?).

Haunted Cartomancy by Norah 2024-04-17T14:13:10Z

Bravo!

Ocarina Summoner by Narlet 2024-05-02T15:10:38Z

Impressive game! I had to fetch my notebook to be able to stand a chance but I'm used to it from adventure games by now so it's fine. Which, speaking of, I bet this would make a great mini-game or side mechanic in a larger exploration or puzzle game. It's a great proof of concept in any case.

Hell-Sent Messenger by Creeper Nade 2024-04-25T13:22:13Z

Fun concept! I honestly adore stuff like this. Wandering around and having to pinpoint objective coordinates. The ghost communication angle is a great spin on it. I'd love to see a full game utilizing this fully, with more puzzle variety. Also, it maybe goes without saying but the visuals and atmosphere are lovely!

MEOWTERSPACE by Tetracold 2024-05-02T14:49:22Z

I dropped so many cats needlessly into the void...

Great job! I love how vibrant everything in this is. The art and animations are particularly lovely. And man is this polished. I only wish the game area was a little bigger, to make space for even more cats, but I would say the same for every game really.

Hellmouth Pizza by FunnyPumpkin 2024-04-18T10:25:33Z

My timing is so terrible that I might appreciate a difficulty slider. Fun mechanics though! I love the art style.

Leprechaun's Gold by Stowy 2024-04-22T17:55:38Z

Lovely game. The core mechanic grew on me surprisingly fast. It felt tedious initially because I tried to memorize the key combinations but when I just mumbled the phrases to myself it became a lot easier (I wouldn't dare play it like that in public though). The 2D/3D art is really nice.

Frame Wizards by AlezJL 2024-04-17T14:31:06Z

I was a little confused as to what was going on but just messing around until I got the hang of it was pretty fun. Gave me Scribblenauts vibes.

God's Apprentice by Kimday 2024-04-26T13:27:36Z

Great concept and gorgeous art. I'd honestly love to see this as a full game. Maybe just tweak the gameplay a little such that combining items involves less guesswork. Surprising/silly combinations are fun, but needing to try out every permutation can wear you out after a bit. It's definitely less satisfying that way when you eventually find the right combination. But yeah, just some tweaks like that, some more content, and you've got yourself a solid game!

Ballad of Lead Shroud by KrummSakura 2024-04-29T15:09:31Z

Neat little story and presentation! I liked the lowkey haunting atmosphere a lot. The musical sting when you interact with stuff was a nice touch, I legit didn't realize at first that it wasn't part of the background music, it blends so well into it. I thought the way that story beats pop up the screen was neat but found it just a teensy bit irritating because it stops you all of a sudden. I'm wondering if it'd feel more fluid if your walk speed slowed down a little instead? Sort of like a cutscene where you control the camera.

Anyway, great job! It's a lovely, multifaceted showcase. Story, mood, interaction etc.

Quick side note on the web player: It seems you can't focus the game viewer again if you loose focus and have to refresh the tab. No biggie when you know of it though.

How to summon your lost dog from the space between spaces by SodaGummy 2024-04-26T18:04:46Z

Great entry! I didn't know what to make of the control scheme at first. For a second I almost thought it was bugged, then I realized it wasn't and got worried it would grow tiresome, but it then it quickly started to grow on me and became kinda fun trying to master it. The trail is a nice touch. It definitely makes the movement feel a lot more responsive than it would be otherwise. I'd be curious to see what this game would look and feel like with those placeholder boxes swapped out for actual scenery (in the same style as the sprites).

NECRO RUSH by helviett 2024-04-29T15:21:34Z

Fun game! Those zombie pounce animations are adorable. I love the little smacking noises too. The audio in particular is subtly nice. It's there, and it's varied, but it's just the right level of not distracting. Would be fun to see more varied environments and monsters.

HolyCrash by YANGSANG 2024-04-17T14:46:27Z

2D art mixed with 3D in this way is the greatest thing ever. <3

Energy Sound Summit by code_for_joy 2024-04-26T18:20:12Z

Neat and surreal concept. That graphics style made me pine for the 90s in a good way.

DURO by Fenix131113 2024-04-25T13:08:01Z

Man the difficulty escalated after the initial tutorial levels, I had to really jolt my brain into gear (in a good way). This is such a well rounded and polished effort. Incredible job! It honestly feels like a demo for a full game. Gives you a taste of the base mechanics and atmosphere but leaves you wanting more.

Akino's Dungeon by Risminator 2024-04-19T08:47:57Z

This game is subtly addictive. I just wish the mouse cursor was hidden and locked. The controls did feel a bit floaty but I think seeing the cursor is what plays it up a lot. The art is really nice!

Plaguebringers by zablas 2024-04-22T17:41:03Z

Fun premise. It would lend itself well to a black comedy narrative (akin to Overlord) wherein you go around infecting villages for ridiculous reasons. The idea of having level up bonuses was interesting too, although I kind of started ignoring them after a while cause I just wanted to spam the mouse and flood the village with more rats.

Slaymore by Joshua Miller-Pio 2024-05-03T18:47:06Z

Really neat entry. The art, animations, and just the visuals in general are gorgeous (I particularly love the layered backgrounds). The level design is pretty solid (feels like a slice from a full game), I only had one issue progressing where I clumsily spawned a minion on top of a tiny platform and therefore couldn't stand on it to jump, though luckily an enemy above shot something at me while I was sliding on top of my minion which bounced me up high enough to reach the next platform (maybe give me the ability to axe my own minion in such a case?).

Imo, the gameplay and movement are pretty solid too for a game of this type, albeit just a teensy bit floaty (nothing tweaking a few values can't fix). Maybe consider tinting the friendly minions slightly differently too (I got them confused a few times).

The audio is great. The jumping sound especially is just adorable.

Anyway, lovely game. It's got so much personality and polish. Great work, y'all!

Elemental Summoners by Memnarch 2024-04-27T22:20:04Z

I don't know why exactly but I love the occasional sped up music. It's like the game is trying to snap itself awake at important moments. Neat little entry. For someone like me who doesn't get up to many card games I appreciate the straightforwardness of the loop (sell, buy, reroll, fuse). I also kinda love that your wizard is absolutely helpless without his cards. And you don't just show the game over screen right away when your last card goes down. You actually get to see the enemy units finish your guy off as a final insult. Fun stuff.

Phasmophile by Joschino 2024-04-16T17:15:14Z

The ghost descriptions gave me a good laugh. Love the concept!
