LD24 — Evolution

Octogeddon by flyingbear 2012-08-27T23:24:00

Hello! I'm a guy from Shigi's forum. :) Thought to also post here since I already have an account anyway.

This game is LOL! :D Congrats for making it in 48 hours! This is awesome!

My only sorrow is that the window is too large and doesn't fit on my screen (the bottom is covered by my taskbar, so I don't see how much DNA I have). And I agree with the above that upgrades come pretty slowly. So it would need a little more balancing - something that one doesn't have time for in 48 hours. ;)

Player 2, start! by GSM Productions 2012-08-28T11:18:00

Finally I downloaded everything needed to run the game (I think), but it fails with this:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "main.py", line 152, in <module>
app = LudumGame(god)
File "main.py", line 58, in __init__
self.spawnPlayer()
File "main.py", line 75, in spawnPlayer
self.player = Player(self.floor_handler,god=self.god)
File "C:\Temp\player2_start\ld24_src\player.py", line 78, in __init__
self.textures = self.loadTextureMovie(6, 'models/Marche_', 'png', padding = 2)
File "C:\Temp\player2_start\ld24_src\player.py", line 158, in loadTextureMovie
for i in range(frames)]
File "D:\Panda3D-1.7.2\direct\showbase\Loader.py", line 533, in loadTexture
raise IOError, message
IOError: Could not load texture: models/Marche_01.png
Maybe you forgot to include that file, or is there something I'm doing wrong?

"god" - LOL. Never used Python, guess it's an internal variable.

Stick Man Run by LZAntal 2013-05-02T06:14:00

Üdvözletem! Kedves kis játék, aranyosak a sündisznók! A "Game Over" menüben nehéz eltalálni a feliratokat - van egy kis "Hitbox Dissonance", ha érted, hogy mondom. ;)

Hello! Nice little game with cute hedgehogs! It's a little hard to click the captions in the "Game Over" menu - there's some "Hitbox Dissonance", if you know what I mean. ;)

Stick Man Run by LZAntal 2013-05-02T15:51:00

Sorry for the UTF-8 garbage. I thought the site is UTF-8 compliant. :/

One fine morning our machines are gonna cut us down by netmute 2013-05-03T23:47:00

Hell, it's extremely fun! :D It was hard to beat the computer at first. :) And even then, it depends a lot on luck.

Super MiniMan by Alink 2013-05-21T00:04:00

Very great game, indeed minimalistic! ;) Albeit it's very hard. Those zombies are so fast! :D

Keepy Uppy by Paul Sinnett 2013-05-01T01:51:00

Very fun game! My record is 22 so far, and I had to practice a little to reach it. I especially liked the sound.

I'd be curious of the source code but I can't download it - it gives a 404!

Trapped in Minimalism by eShredder 2013-05-04T20:38:00

Very nice game, one of the bests I've seen so far! It is quite hard, though, I couldn't even beat it. :D After I've destroyed a space station, an entire fleet of enemies started to chase me!

For me it had absolutely no sound. :(

Chameleon by Helco 2013-05-20T23:36:00

I liked the theme & music. Although the game is too hard. It is incredibly hard to catch flies and shoot enemies. For now, the best tactic against enemies is to simply run past them. :P Otherwise, I really like the feel of this game - maybe if you could solve the previously listed issues, it would be quite fun. :)

Bonus points for Linux port! ;)

LOWBAT by Foxtacy 2013-05-21T00:59:00

Awesome game - nice art style, nice music, great mood. The problem with it, however, that it's not very intuitive. In many cases I didn't even understand why I died. Also, I heard water but I didn't see it - maybe it's because of my monitor, but still it should be more apparent. I like the Space Invaders like figures. :)

Pixel Ninja by Nsmurf 2013-05-03T04:49:00

I won this game, though it took some time. It would be nice to have a minimap, 'cause when there are less than 5 trinkets left, it gets quite frustrating to find the remaining ones. Also would nice to end the game after you found all the trinkets (+ the potato).

Btw, I did find the potato before finding the trinkets, though I couldn't do anything with it. Does something happen if I get to the potato after finding all the trinkets?

Anyway, really nice graphics and great mood. The music is also great, though it gets a little annoying over time.

Well done! :)

Overall: 4; Innovation: 2; Fun: 3; Theme: 5; Graphics: 5; Audio: 3; Humor: N/A; Mood:4.

climbing 208 feet up the ruin wall by Porpentine 2013-05-03T03:18:00

Great text, quite psychedelic; that's why you get 5 for Mood. ;)

Minimalistic Color Labyrinth by humpback studios 2013-05-01T18:43:00

Very nice game, good idea! :) I confess I couldn't beat it. :D Though I just need more time.

@someone: I also run it with Wine - strangely, first time it didn't even start, second time it worked without sound, third time it run perfectly with sound and everything. :D

Outside the Box by GSM Productions 2013-05-01T18:06:00

I have a 32-bit Linux system and I can't run the game for you only included a 64-bit binary. :(

I remember following you during LD24 back in August. :D This time I couldn't follow you 'cause I was busy with my own entry. ;) (Which is unfortunately not finished, but it was fun regardless.)

Outside the Box by GSM Productions 2013-05-14T01:34:00

I've tried the game - sorry for taking it so long, I know you posted up the 32-bit version a week ago, but meanwhile I got other stuff to bother with.

For some reason, the game crashes after I leave the town. :(

This is the error message I get on the terminal:
pyglet.resource.ResourceNotFoundException: Resource "draw_texture.png" was not found on the path. Ensure that the filename has the correct captialisation.

I'm running the Linux version.

The game looks promising; I like the music and art, and I'm curious of the story. Though the movement is quite inconvenient sometimes: it's hard to aim to the doors to get through them, sometimes it's not entirely clear where am I allowed to go through and where there is a wall blocking my way, and once I got stuck after I came out of a house.

Outside the Box by GSM Productions 2013-05-20T23:12:00

This new build is great, it didn't crash at that crucial point. :) Finally I played the game (though still couldn't finish it) and now I'm in hurry with my rating (only few hours left). ;)

Unfortunately, the game seemed to be too buggy to finish. :( It happened quite a lot of times that I got stuck in something - e.g. I was running too fast and rushed into the wall; and I managed to get stuck in Dude's carcass (that was the point where I gave up the game after quite a lot of tries). Also, at first I sucked at battles and got defeated like 4-5 times (don't remember the exact number). And a non-game-breaking bug: I think some dialog lines in the dialog with Dude gets titled to one of our N* guys - not sure, maybe I didn't pay enough attention.

On the other hand:
- I liked the story (though didn't get to the end but it seemed interesting);
- I liked the graphics - e.g. the Deliberately Monochrome color theme and the minimalisticc figures those still had enough character;
- The music fits well with the theme.
- All the above creates a unique feel to the game and it's really great. :)
- Bonus points for listing Lyra in the credits! ;)

Even though I couldn't finish the game now, I may certainly get back to it later. :) (Especially if you provide some bugfixes. :P)

Minimal by MegaBrutal 2013-05-03T02:53:00

Thanks for all the comments so far! :) This game is definitely not complete - maybe I should have worked on it for an additional day and submit it into the Jam. Originally it's intended to be a minimal roguelike game, but since you can't see your stats and can't die, it is hard to notice. :D

@DdlyHeadshot: I think I'll work on this further after the compo, 'cause it's fun to keep one's assembly expertise above a certain level - even if you don't actually use the ancient language otherwise, thus it has little practical advantage; assembly does great to the programmer's soul - I don't know who said that but it's true! ;)

@whitetigle: You are right, it was rather a coding amusement; gameplay was a secondary concern - I know it might not be the spirit of Ludum Dare, but I had fun anyway.

@berkano: It can be even smaller if you remove my signature text integrated into the .COM file - since it is never printed or referenced, it wouldn't affect the program. ;)

Minimal by MegaBrutal 2013-05-10T00:31:00

I'd just like to let you know that I'm working on a more polished version of the game - of course it will still be quite minimal, but still somewhat playable. For those who are interested, follow me on Twitter for updates!

Minimal by MegaBrutal 2013-06-13T03:03:00

A Post-Compo version is up! \o/ It has quite an awesome extra feature: it can be booted directly from a disk, so it runs even without DOS! Check my journal entry & read the source code for details.

Million Dollar Manbaby by Lianne Booton 2013-05-02T05:42:00

Really nice game! Good idea, amazing graphics, and it really has a mood. I especially liked the background - pony, catwoman, LOL. Who was Felicia?

I couldn't beat the blue koala boss thingie - would require more trying.

The only problem with this game is that it isn't minimalist at all - I did read how you interpreted minimalism for your entry, but... come on! :D

This is the first game where I could rate in all categories - no "n/a". :)

Overall: 5; Innovation: 3; Fun: 4; Theme: 1; Graphics: 5; Audio: 5; Humor: 5; Mood: 5.

Escape the Minimalism by klianc09 2013-05-04T21:53:00

Good idea! It gets quite frustrating; at a certain point I gave it up - maybe on the 2nd or 3rd test level. I had fun regardless, and I really liked the mechanics. :)

The sound stuttered, but it's supposedly my local problem. :(

The Time Saver by HELLO23 2013-05-01T02:14:00

I'm trying to run this on Ubuntu, but I'm getting this:

The assembly mscorlib.dll was not found or could not be loaded.
It should have been installed in the `/usr/lib/mono/2.0/mscorlib.dll' directory.

I suppose I should install something in addition to Mono, but I don't know what.

LDRU by mollrow 2013-05-01T17:30:00

WOW, this is really awesome! It reminds me of VVVVVV because of the gravity mess, but since VVVVVV is one of my all-time favourites, everything reminds me of it is awesome for me. ;) Very good idea!

Why do you thank Gearbox Software? Are you affiliated with them somehow? I mean the creators of HL: Opposing Force.

LDRU by mollrow 2013-05-01T17:50:00

Also, is it supposed to have sound? 'Cause it doesn't have for me.

BASHLAND - Breakout Mario Mashup by McFunkypants 2013-05-03T03:43:00

Really nice game, thanks! ;)
Almost qualifies for a one-button game, since most part of the game can be passed by just holding the forward button. Very minimalistic! ;)
The music/sound/graphics creates a great mood, so you've got a 5 there.

Angry Reviewer by vgcharlienash 2013-05-01T16:51:00

I can't download the game. :( It redirects me to a pretty long URL at media1.gamefront.com which is not available.

Hukaire by yellowlemming 2013-05-01T16:30:00

Nice game. :) It's a little frustrating that you can only orientate by coordinates. It would be helpful to have a map. Also it would be nice to see the source code.

PaperFlick! by DdlyHeadshot 2013-05-01T02:10:00

Hehe, nice to see a QBASIC game! That was the very first programming language I learned. :D Took some time to figure out what commands I'm supposed to issue. :)

untitled by OneSadCookie 2013-05-01T02:23:00

LOL, I was surprised! :D Humorous not-game/anti-game - and VERY minimal! ;)

Dream Fishing by Sophie Houlden 2013-05-02T15:07:00

Nice game, good idea. Funny how you love the fishing theme, you bring it up quite often. :) I love the dreamy atmosphere and the colors in this game, and the funny punchlines of the wishdom quotes. ("Avoid dogs with hats."; "Boobs, lol.") :D

There is a fish deep that I can't seem to able to catch. :( Is there a way to throw farther?

Some wishdom text doesn't fit on the screen, is it intended? Also, it's not intuitive how to quit gracefully from the game - ESC doesn't work. I always had to kill the process. I'm running the Linux build.

It was funny to see the timelapse, as the development process was suspended by anime cartoons, twitter and IRC sessions. :D

Really nice work overall, here are my ratings:

Overall: 5; Innovation: 4; Fun: 4; Theme: 4; Graphics: 5; Audio: 5; Humor: 5; Mood: 5.

Infinity Dungeon by Yakyb 2013-05-01T17:39:00

I tried to run it with Wine under Linux but it crashes. :( I'm really sorry for it 'cause it looks promising.

<Insert Title Here> by hannardynamite 2013-05-20T23:20:00

Really fun game! Really nice how minimalistic it is, yet how awesomely fun! The music really helps a lot to get the vibe! Congrats!

Get Gold by Jonatron 2013-05-01T11:42:00

I see it's in Unity. Could you compile a Linux version too?

LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

Vacuum Attack by Pisti 2015-05-10T21:48:00

It took some time to realize that I need to suck objects and shoot them at enemies, instead of sucking the enemies themselves.

I didn't like that only one mistake kills me – it would be better to have a health bar.

Anyway, I like the idea of using a vacuum cleaner as a weapon, and I especially liked the background music. :)

Goat Shooter! by MegaBrutal 2015-04-19T22:35:00

Yeah, it's possible. You need to deliver exact 25 shots. :)

Billy McMath Solves Problems by Manky 2015-05-12T00:32:00

At the last few questions, the game didn't allow me to type answers. Is it intentional, or something went wrong?

Anyway, at first, I thought, I wish it was true that you could beat bullies with your Special Interests. It reminds me when I daydreamed that once I'll humiliate my bully by knowing what is Program Segment Prefix while he doesn't know it. OMG, I haven't told this anyone, ever...

In the end I got friendzoned by the girl – it's pretty much how it used to happen in reality.

Actually, being a master of your SI really brings some confidence, and it can really help you to face real-life troubles, so in this sense, your game is quite realistic. The girl friendzoning our protagonist is also realistic, and telling him that he doesn't always need to be perfect is also very nice and true, this is the lesson of this game. I wish the best of luck for Billy for the future. :)

I will surely replay this game, but for now, I must hurry with rating more games...

I'm sorry, I'm jealous by igoramendola 2015-05-12T00:55:00

Haha! Jealous girls rock! Anyway, I liked this game, though it took some time to figure out what to do. The pixel art is cute.

The Goatboy by Ouro17 2015-05-11T01:38:00

Goat, goat, goat! Kecske! I love goats! \o/

Kind of a hard game, it took several tries to win, but I liked it! :)

A suggestion, though: you shouldn't mix keyboard and mouse controls in a platformer-shooter game like this, because it's confusing. Players would expect that your character would shoot in the direction of the mouse pointer. Either make sure to really shoot in the direction of the mouse pointer, or don't have mouse shoot. This game could be perfectly controllable with a SPACE for shoot.

As you used external resources those are not part of your game maker kit, this should probably really be a Jam entry instead of Compo.

Finally, I must note, this was the only game which could convince me to start up Wine to play it, thus, this is the first Windows-only game I rate. Though next time, please consider making a Linux-native port for Ubuntu gamers like me! :)

Pray to the Gods by alhvi 2015-05-08T02:23:00

All five. Really. Pretty awesome! Although the last level is a bit of annoying, because at first it wasn't obvious there are time limits. But praying as a weapon... I want to see more levels of this! Excellent!

Color Sound by ShadowTzu 2015-05-12T00:43:00

I think it's too hard to kill enemies, and I have no idea what to do with the icons dropped by enemies. Probably it's because the game is unfinished.

You get 3 in all categories, and I'll be curious about the finished version. :)

Cat's Heaven by Lyxilion 2015-04-22T22:50:00

I also love kitties and liked this game! :)

Anyway, I don't know why you say it doesn't work on Chrome 42 – you used Phaser, which uses HTML5/JavaScript technology, thus it doesn't require any additional plugins those are deprecated. You actually did exactly what the Ludum Dare announcement suggests about avoiding deprecated technologies.

Playground Mayhem by explosiveninja 2015-05-08T01:22:00

Hehe, reminds me of Worms! :)

Good game, though it's kind of buggy as of yet. The movements are really problematic, e.g. that I can't move while I'm jumping. Also, some of the children got stuck.

Thanks for being cross-platform! :) As a Linux user, I have a hard time finding games those I can play easily.

A Way Out by Jakob37 2015-04-24T20:28:00

Really fun! I didn't know that so much power lies within typing! :) I especially liked the music.

Berry | The Last Straw by yuigoto 2015-05-12T00:08:00

Hehe, reminds me of Strawberry Shortcake. :D

It took a lot of time 'til I figured I can shoot with SPACE, because I looked at the webpage for info, and it is not stated there. Then I read the instructions here and found the wisdom.

After all, I gave 5 in all category, because I honestly think it deserves it.

Magic Weapon by roma96roma 2015-05-10T21:05:00

I downloaded the Linux package, and got Windows EXE files and DLLs. Then I tried the Web version, and nothing happens. If you would upload a proper Linux version, I could probably rate your game.

Amy and the Magic Hammer by duck 2015-05-10T21:16:00

I really liked the pixel art and the overall retro style! :) And actually, it's kind of a hard game.
Thanks for being cross-platform! (Linux user here.)

Get back to work! by john wasteland 2015-05-10T21:24:00

I would rate this entry if you made a Linux build through Unity. (Unity Web Player is not available for Linux.)

Killer Joke by tronix + capnramses 2015-04-22T22:14:00

Overall, I liked this entry, although it wasn't obvious how could I increase the casualties at the enemy. The game stalled at 12% / 25% population, and nothing changed the numbers, no matter how many comedians I sent to enemy cities and how many hecklers I had at my cities.

Good work! :)

Crushing Doubt by Fjalar 2015-05-10T07:32:00

At first I was confused how am I supposed to win, but then I figured it out, and I could do it in like the 3rd or 4th try. It's an entertaining game, if you get its goal. Anyway, the numbers are a little confusing, I don't always see how my actions affect my devotion and doubt.

Nice game, keep up the good work! :)

FIREFLY GUN ! by TRAB 2015-05-11T02:57:00

I really liked it, albeit I could never win. I wonder if there is an ending at all. I especially liked the audio. 5/5 from me.

Guide 2 Where? by Pitƶik4 2015-05-10T07:06:00

Very interesting! I only played 3 rounds, once sacrificing the boiler guy, once sacrificing myself, and once the bad guy. I couldn't get an ending where everyone survives yet. Good game, keep up the good work! :)

LD35 — Shapeshift

Fuck you it's the same thing as last year by xgeovanni 2016-05-10T00:11:00

I'm not sure if it's legit to repost last year's LD entry...

The Furniture is Alive by Bemmu 2016-05-01T23:08:00

Very great, scary game. I hope I won't have nightmares of furnitures. :D Is it possible to survive the last level, where the blackboard tells me to „GIVE UP!”? Because I always died on that level. I wonder if there is an ending beyond that.

Shapeshifting Goddess by MegaBrutal 2016-04-18T11:28:00

@monkeybit29: Thanks for your feedback! Theoretically, it should be fixed now. Just be sure to click into the game before playing.
@glaze_96: Thank you! :)

Shapeshifting Goddess by MegaBrutal 2016-04-21T17:05:00

@edve98: Since it's a HTML5/JavaScript game which is not obfuscated in any way, the source code is readily viewable through the browser. (Through right click, View source or something similar option.) Additionally, I plan to set up a Git repository with GitWeb later – if that happens, the project will show up here: http://git.megabrutal.com/. Note that this is a very busy week at my job, so I don't get much free time per day to work on extra stuff for the game.

A82-Recon 3038 by Geti 2016-04-23T17:00:00

I couldn't figure out how to identify the shapeshifter(s).

Impressive that you made such a great game within 72 hours on a restrictive platform. I didn't know about PICO-8, but now I've seen more LD35 games made with it, so I will check it out.

Thanks for having C and V as an alternative to Z and X, as Z and X are not next to each other on Hungarian keyboards.

Nice pixel art, catches the theme, thanks for letting us play it! :)

Am I supposed to hear audio? I don't hear any sound, but I didn't hear sound for other PICO-8 games either. I don't know what might be the problem, I'm on Ubuntu 15.10 and Mozilla Firefox.

Cheese Factory Simulator by brgarnet17 2016-05-10T00:48:00

I don't really get the mechanics... do I actually fail when I manage to make delicious blue cheese?

Formation Charge! by theholychicken 2016-05-10T00:04:00

Really nice graphics! The game presents no challenge in its current state. I'm not sure where you're going with the concept and how are you going to introduce some challenge, but I'm curious. Thanks for the game!

Shift! by StrayCat 2016-05-10T00:38:00

Are the levels procedurally generated?
Great game, excellent sound and graphics.
I didn't play it to the end, because then I wouldn't have time to submit my rating. :P I hope you'll get the required number of ratings.

Dr. Phase by NoTrueSpaceman 2016-04-23T10:48:00

Great game, good idea, I pretty much upvoted it. ;)
As for now it is very short. Looking forward a post-compo sequel. Please somehow notify me if you ever make one. :)

ShapeShifter by TheMightySice 2016-04-23T10:35:00

Your game crashes with no apparent error message (Ubuntu 15.10).

ShapeShifter by TheMightySice 2016-04-23T11:38:00

Since I encountered another Unity game that crashed, I wondered that the problem might be at my side. For others, I note that I need to start the game with „-force-opengl” switch, like this:

./LD35.x86 -force-opengl

Then it works properly.

So I loved the game! The music is very repetitive, though I understand that you didn't have time for that. (Since you were asking for a tool to make sounds in your blogpost, probably this was the first time you made music ever.)

Can't really say more – it's just great! If you polish it a little more and make new levels, I'd play it again.

I hope the „WON” level is supposed to be the ending, and not a puzzle that I couldn't solve. :D

ShapeShifter by tGiant 2016-05-08T19:04:00

Excellent game! I always love some gravity shifting. :)
At first I thought the timer made it too hard, but then I beat the challenge. Maybe you could make an easy mode (without timer) and a hard mode (with timer).

System Shift by edve98 2016-04-20T20:02:00

And the first game I get to rate is a Linux-native game running in a terminal... This is so awesome!

The graphics are NetHack-like, lovely. (I actually gave 5 stars for graphics.) The only problem with this game is that I think it needs some fine-tuning: you die too quickly, it would nice to have more health to begin with. Also, it is hard to play on a laptop, where you don't have a numpad (yeah, I have a Num Lock which makes some of the letters to function as numbers, but still hard to sense the directions). Finally, I think it does not stick to the theme very much. Yeah, it's open to interpretation... shapes... shifting... still, by my standard, moving shapes are not enough for "shapeshifting".

But once again, I'd like to emphasize that I found this game lovely, and having a custom text-based game engine is a cool thing, and maybe I will build a more-health version of it for myself – since it's open source, I could do that. ;)

Pasowix's Magical Shapeshifting Workshop by glaze_96 2016-05-01T16:15:00

This looks interesting, but I can't play it. :(
Could you export a Linux64 build from Unity?

Pasowix's Magical Shapeshifting Workshop by glaze_96 2016-05-01T16:54:00

Meanwhile it turned out the Web version worked for me. Even though I didn't hear any sound.

My final score is -1011. :D Nice game, liked the idea. Sad that I couldn't use all objects. Then the guy who wanted male chicken...

If you intend to work on this game post-compo, you could consider making it more complicated (like mixing more objects), but also to give a little more hints at the beginning.

Worm shifter by mde 2016-05-10T00:22:00

Challenging game, thanks for sharing! :)

A Story of Hatred by fragileannihilator 2016-05-09T23:00:00

I just can't describe what I played now... :D Man, this is a masterpiece! 5 for overall, fun, graphics, audio, humor, and mood. 4 for innovation and 3 for theme.

You really subverted the player's expectation to see a philosophical/psychological game... well, maybe it's still philosophical/psychological... in a way... :D I thought it will be about bullying or something, and then... surprise!

I couldn't help to notice that the boy's hat has Romanian national colors – is this intended or coincidence?

The Killer's Apprentice by PaulJs 2016-04-23T09:59:00

Nice atmosphere, nice background music, great graphics.

Would be nice to have some hints on the controls. At first I thought it's a mouse-only game, and it took some time to figure out that I can move with arrows.

How do you render the title screen? I couldn't read from the source. At first I thought it's real 3D animation with WebGL, but it's more likely that it's an animated GIF. With what application you made it?

Thanks for making me a killer, haha! :)

Perfect Form by samreid 2016-05-09T17:33:00

This game has freezed my browser (Firefox) at least 3 times (yet I gave it multiple chances). Sometimes one click causes the entire browser to grey out, and then it starts to eat memory in a rapid fashion, spilling over to swap, and would probably summon oom_kill if I hadn't killed it before that may happen. Some serious memory-management issues there.

I didn't fully get the logic of the game. I couldn't figure out what I'm supposed to do in Arcade mode. The Adventure mode just started to get likable, and I was kind of getting to grasp the logic, and I would have liked to continue it and play it further, but the browser always freezed before I could get far enough.

Strongest qualities in Theme (4) and Graphics (4).

Infinite Vertices by CoderCameron 2016-05-10T00:54:00

Windows-only – not rated.

Platformery by mhlbrothers 2016-05-09T21:32:00

Nice game, and thanks for the Linux port! :)

To be honest, it doesn't utilize the theme to its full potential. The triangle jumps higher and maybe faster, but I don't see why a triangle has this distinctive quality. Since the qualities are not logically connected to the shapes, the shapes are mere indicators of game states. This way, the shape change doesn't even matter – you could use a variety of other indicators for differentiating between different game states, e.g. changing color, size, or even just putting a text on the screen.

Moreover, it's almost always one shape is the solution, so you just have to pick the right one at the beginning of the level, and you don't have to change it while you're in the middle of it (except for the last level which indeed require shape changing within level – I couldn't finish that level though).

Anyway, congratulations for your first completed game – you reached a milestone, now you can make (and finish) more games. :)

I never had a smartphone until recently, but the point is that now I have one – and believe it or not, this is the VERY FIRST game I EVER installed on it. :D

Nice to see an Android game, though I still miss a Linux port (yeah, Android is Linux too, but I meant Linux for desktop PC, like Ubuntu).

It nicely fits the theme, and I like the gameplay idea. Thanks for giving me a game that I can play on trains! ;)

Pretend by davor10105 2016-05-03T21:28:00

First of all: PLEASE EXPORT A LINUX BUILD. The WebGL version works, but lags.

Excellent game! It is very hard – if you heard me playing it, I bet you could have learned some really sophisticated Hungarian cursing. I think the hardness could be mitigated with more often checkpoints. The game should also use some easier tutorial phase which would allow me to accommodate to the controls before the tougher stuff happen, but it's understandable that you didn't have time to implement this. The game's crazy-hardness reminded me of VVVVVV and Super Meat Boy.

I'd also like to explore this „who's the real you?” theme (beyond my actual entry – I know you played it), and I actually have more unimplemented concepts for it. Huge respect for your implementation!

Graphics are sweet, animations are smooth. Could use some goats. Thanks for this game!

@plko: Your comment reminds me that aspies (people with Asperger's Syndrome) need to wear a mask for the outside world, that they may only put down when they are at home (or alone). In a more equal society, it wouldn't be necessary.

Miss Turner's Magical Pet Swap Shop by Rose 2016-04-23T18:12:00

Pretty amazing, fun game! :) Actually, I almost rated it all-5. The only 4 I gave is for innovation, because I hold 5 for really surprising games.

Sometimes it's hard to get the right shape – e.g. I gave up on weasel. Good for learning English words: as a non-English-native, I am not good at naming animal parts, but this game surely helps to improve it. Especially great game for young children.

Bonus points for your love of animals – I hope that includes goats and cats too. ;) (Btw, can you transform an animal to a goat in this game?)

Glad to see a female programmer – although the female-to-male ratio is getting better and I see many girls in video game development, they seem to be still scarce in programming.

Connected-Souls by MayankUnreal 2016-04-23T18:15:00

Could you please export a Linux build?

Mr. Purrgalar by KairosXIII 2016-05-02T20:32:00

Excellent game, liked the concept! :)

Sometimes I get stuck on the white squares, so I can't go in the direction where I am supposed to go.

I didn't head any sound and the „Cat Videos” button doesn't work.

Escaping Darkness by geeky_penguin 2016-05-09T18:00:00

This is a Unity game, you could have exported a Linux version easily (especially if you're a geeky penguin ;)). I still tested the game with Wine. I don't do it often, most of the times I just abandon Windows-only games, but this game made me curious enough to worth the inconvenience.

The correct spelling is „Ludum Dare”, not „Ludem Dare”.

I REALLY liked the premise, however the game is clearly incomplete. I didn't really understand why I was getting teleported to random places, and then with the dog, once I was teleported to darkness where I couldn't progress. With the mouse, I guess I should have jump over the poison(?), but never managed to do that.

HUGE 5 for Graphics!

I wish you to keep developing the game post-compo, because I'd like to emphasize that I really liked the premise and I think you could have made an awesome game out of it if you had more time. I encourage you to get into game development, make more games, and participate in future game jams. :)

Thanks for sharing your game!

faces by cruzzzy 2016-04-23T16:11:00

At first I didn't know how to play, but now the universe is mine. :) Thanks!

By the way, X and Z are not next to each other on Hungarian keyboards, so it gets some difficulty in the controls.

The Village Helpers by Z4F1 2017-05-17T22:29:27Z

At first I didn't realize that I have to hit objects repeatedly to harvest them – there was no effect that would tell me that my tool has hit the object at all and didn't miss. Now I didn't have enough time to finish this game, but maybe later I'll return to it. Thanks for the game, keep up the good work! :)

Heckin' Ants by Thirsty 2017-05-18T21:13:25Z

I liked it! :) What if the flag-holding ants would serve as checkpoints? I didn't like that I had to start over from the very beginning when I died. Nice graphics. I wonder what those enemy creatures are. It's funny when the ant says „heck”! :D

Miniscule Frenzy by Mieeh 2017-05-19T20:10:10Z

Cool game! The mechanics remind me of Super Meat Boy (especially that you can bounce off the walls). My criticism is that it's very hard (though probably it's intentional) and the animation when you die (which happens often) is too long, while I'd prefer to retry right away. Very great graphics and music!

Unlucky Planet by Siridakis 2017-05-19T20:41:16Z

Great game, thanks! The music is very repetitive, though. I loved the concept and the upgrades.

Finding your loved one by Laaph 2017-05-17T21:32:08Z

Very nice graphics! I like the concept, but I had to give up, as the controls are unbearable. Then '=' and '-' are not very great for game controls – think of those who use other keyboard layouts than English, '=' and '-' are not near each other, and '=' may need a key combination to input (e.g. on a Hungarian keyboard layout, '=' would be Shift+7, that didn't work with this game, so I had to change the keyboard layout to English). Also I run out of cookies very quickly if I failed a jump and fell down. But it definitely has potential! :)

Moon Dozer by sararyCow 2017-05-16T19:00:01Z

Yeah, die humanity! :D Very fun game! I wanted to destroy Budapest, but no matter how hard I tried to aim Central Europe, I just couldn't get the message that I finally hit it.

Reduction by megabrutal 2017-05-16T23:30:31Z

Hey guys! Thanks for your feedbacks! :)

I updated the game, now it has an ending (not necessarily a satisfying one, but still an ending).

Jar of Life by hunttis 2017-05-18T20:39:05Z

This is very interesting! You have to keep balance, as too many herbivores eat the plants quickly, but too less of them makes the carnivore to starve and then herbivores can again eat all plants... This is very clever! Thanks for the great game! :) Also thanks for the Linux port!

Frag Saga by guoboism 2017-05-16T18:38:08Z

This seems interesting, but with no Linux port, I couldn't play and rate. :(

Spermy by KingofWhaWha 2017-05-17T22:01:40Z

Hi, I get this error when I try to launch the game (Linux release):

``` megabrutal@thinkpad:~/Ludum Dare/LD38/Spermy$ ./Spermy.x86 Set current directory to /home/megabrutal/Ludum Dare/LD38/Spermy Found path: /home/megabrutal/Ludum Dare/LD38/Spermy/Spermy.x86 There is no data folder ```
Indeed, there is no game data in the archive, only the executable is there. Not rated.
A Tiny Place by grahhhhhhhhh 2017-05-16T18:25:00Z
– I often get a „Game over” screen while I'm not sure what are the lose conditions (therefore I'm not sure what to do to avoid them). There was an occasion when I got an insta-game-over whenever I restarted, however I guess that was a bug, „Clear Data” helped it.
– The bullets are very slow, thus it is very hard to aim.
– The controls are inconsistent and confusing: I have to aim with keyboard, shoot with mouse click, then collect the coins with the mouse cursor. Too many controls to keep in mind. Full mouse control would have been better.
– If I turn off the sound on the title screen, I still hear the fireworks.
– I couldn't get through even the first level. Because of this, I couldn't experience many of the announced cool features of the game, like upgrades, auto-fire and laser sight – I see them in the „How to Play”, but I never got a chance to unlock and try them.
– It is very subjective, but I don't really see the theme worked into the game.
– I like the graphics (especially the robots, assuming it is your work), and I also think the audio is pretty decent (assuming it is your work).
Keep it up, make more games, practice, stay determined! You will get better. :)
SMALL WORLD of LOVER by appix 2017-05-16T18:35:55Z
This is very funny, I laughed out loud! :D Max for graphics, audio, humor and mood.
Smallverse by Spiteful Fox 2017-05-16T19:18:38Z
I liked the different descriptions of planets. It's important to save worlds where Minecraft has a modding API! ;) It was very fun, thank you!
Space Donut by OliverPaulson 2017-05-17T21:16:49Z
Very great game, though it's pretty hard. Would need more balancing. The beginning should be easier, and it could get harder as you progress. But I liked it after all! :)
HELIRESCUE MENS by voxel 2017-12-26T19:55:45Z
Very challenging and hard game, requires lots of patience. I died so many times, and could only get to Level 3 I think. :D Great game, congrats! :)
Dipsomaniac by Junber 2017-12-12T01:10:20Z
This game inspired me to have some Diesel.
Very great game, but at first it starts up so slowly. I almost abandoned the game with „ah, and that goes on for infinity”, when I noticed that some progress happened that hooked me in to continue playing to the end. I won!
Robot Santa by madalaski 2017-12-23T09:25:25Z
(How could this game get sooo many comments and only 3 ratings?)
Nice game, quite addictive – I kept destroying presents for no reason. :D The background music is awesome, and I also like the graphics. I also think the background story is funny. :D However, there is no defined goal and no lose condition. (The former is not that important – without it, it could be a survival game.)
Where The Grains Are by axoona 2017-12-26T19:15:00Z
To get this out of the way first, the character is unbearably slow. It takes minutes for the young boy to walk across the screen and get to the next area. When I had to walk from the forest all the way to the village, I actually put weight onto my right arrow key to be able to do other things while the young boy is walking to the village. But at least you see I had determination to play this game to the end. ;)
Otherwise, it's a great game. I like multiple endings (I managed to get two endings in this game, not sure if there are more). The art style and the ambient music also worth praising – these paintings are beautiful and make the game interesting, while the music is nice relaxing. Because it was mentioned earlier, I played with the Linux version. It works. :) Though there is only a 32-bit build in the package, it would be nice to have a 64-bit build as well. Congratulations for the game, keep up the good work! :)
Cat-apults by Laylow 2017-12-26T20:10:19Z
Yay, kitties! \o/ (Maybe you know the related xkcd comic.) It took some time to figure out the rules, and then I found the AI is very efficient. I thought it's unbeatable, but then I managed to win anyway! Maybe you could make an AI-less version when the other character could be controlled by another player, so humans could play against each other. Very good execution of the theme, great idea! Congrats, keep up the good work! :)
DETERMINATION by megabrutal 2017-12-07T00:20:00Z
Thanks for your feedbacks!
@makiyoshi: Actually, the movement getting out of control is the fulfilment of the „worse it gets” part of the theme.
@CallumLTurner: To be honest, I was tempted to hum „Finale” in my own voice and put it under the game. But I was glad I was able to reach the Jam deadline at all. Wish I started earlier...
CalligraTree by Roaring Cat Games 2017-12-11T01:55:00Z
This is an excellent game, thank you! At first I didn't realize how it is connected to the theme, but then I read above ^^ and I totally accepted your interpretation. The theme is not rigid after all, it's open for some subjective interpretation. Congrats for your great game! :)
SUPER COP HERO by Finlal 2017-12-18T02:22:25Z
So hard, I die too easily! :D
EYAM by donvermo 2017-12-24T14:00:00Z
Great game! At first I failed immediately, but the I managed to build 4-5 houses and many graveyards. Is there a winning condition or you're expected to fill everything with buildings? It wasn't clear for me what is the point of upgrading a house or a graveyard. Increased capacity, maybe, or increased efficiency?
Tuftles by Zirrrus 2017-12-25T11:45:00Z
These tuftles remind me of tribbles from the Star Trek universe. :D I had the field full of tuftles and then all of them died at an alarming rate, so I couldn't be quick enough to care about them. But I think this is the fulfilment of the theme. :D Nice game, keep up the good work! :)
Factory Panic by Chronosv2 2017-12-19T01:22:22Z
It took some time to figure out the rules, but then I think they are intuitive (especially after I took the time to read the instructions...). Upgrades increasing the container capacity is not visible (though the numbers show it, I didn't notice at first). It certainly gets worse with time. :D Great game, thank you! (Sidenote: cool that you started with QBASIC – me too.)
Super Consumerism Sim 2K17: GOTY Edition by EX3D0 2017-12-27T00:25:00Z
Glad that I can buy Bitcoins. :D It would be better if I got different messages concerning how much I've spent (or am I in debt). Without that, I can't really see how the theme comes across – having too many lava lamps and TVs really make things worse; but then you can simply not spend your money and keep it for the future, and I don't really see any downside of that. Buying Bitcoin also only makes things the better – unless you buy more than you can risk to lose, or in case BTC value falls down at an extreme rate, but it is not hinted in the game. Although I see you wanted to bring attention to the downsides of consumerism. Nice pixel graphics and background music. Great work! :)
Business Value: Going Agile by Matthew Traylor 2017-12-26T22:45:00Z
Very fun game! :) At first I didn't realize I can double-jump, but then I found I can not only double-jump, but jump continuously to fly like Superman. The game got much easier from that point. :D I was hoping to get some feedback when I get all tickets done („*Congrats, you won – you're awesome!*” or something along that line), but I guess the lack of recognition just makes the game more realistic. :D It could be improved by counting the time as a factor or adding achievements.
Tower of Mana by Pedro Henrique Cesar 2017-12-11T02:15:15Z
Very hard game, probably it could use some more balancing. E.g. a short grace period to do something before I turn to stone would be nice. Perfectly fits the theme, and the graphics and sound effects are magnificent. I'd like to see a more fleshed out version of this game, so I wish it to grow beyond Ludum Dare. :)
Cute invaders by sgadrat 2017-12-26T20:45:00Z
I WANT THE UNICORN! And hell, maths is hard, great that you kept your mental integrity while you were dealing with it. Using FOSS software is just as awesome (fun fact: I'm also on Ubuntu and used Vim and purely open-source tools to create my entry, so greetings from a fellow Linux lover). Is there a lose condition in this game? I deliberately left all chickens die, but nothing happened, and the chests spawn so quickly that I can't run out of them (I thought if all chickens die and I used all chests, the game ends, but I couldn't get to that situation). Very nice artwork, congrats to the artist. To be honest, I found the music too much repetitive. Followed both of you on Twitter – you are awesome! :)
P.S.: This game reminds me of another entry: Tuftles by @zirrrus.
Bug Juice 🐜 by webthingee 2017-12-19T23:25:25Z
I could only find 3 friends during different plays, and I could only save 2 at most. :D Anyway, really great game, and I think you got your 20th rating from me. Your game is fun, I liked the graphics and the music; however I don't really know how it fits with the theme – maybe the more radiation you have, the worse it is...? The controls are a little clumsy, especially when it comes to precise jumping. Bonus points for having an HTML5 version. Keep up the good work! :)
Crave by Boschdog03 2017-12-27T02:30:30Z
Genius! To gain health at the expense of difficulty is a brilliant idea. (I did something similar in my entry.) When I got my health to about 470, a mass attacked me, the game even froze. :D Really fun, thank you!
SackKnight by CallumLTurner 2017-12-08T01:28:08Z
I could not beat the undead lord at the end of the level, nonetheless the atmosphere and mood are excellent. Awesome job, thank you! :)
I installed the `libsfml-graphics2.4` package, but I still get this.
Trapped by PoundTheGroundStudios 2017-12-06T22:33:26Z
Hi! You linked the Windows executable for the Linux download – please correct this and I'll try your game. (Though if it's made with a sufficiently new version of Unity, it won't work even if I get the Linux executable, so I can't actually promise anything, but I'd do my best.)
Crawl Control by TristanF. 2017-12-06T23:04:35Z
I can't figure out how to select another level besides the first one. :D Anyway, cute game, thought I don't actually see why is it bad to have a big crowd. I mean, who cares if they die? ;) I think the controls are unnecessarily complicated (I mean the menu selection parts, not the main gameplay). I especially liked the graphics and I find the gameplay smooth. Good job! :)
Populous by Astavie 2017-12-25T11:15:30Z
I can't say I fully understand the rules – for example, there were times when I card was there and I still couldn't choose it. Sometimes the unchoosable card was greyed out, but sometimes it was white, and I couldn't figure out why I can't choose a card which is white. I also didn't quite get what is the cost of cards. Probably my technology should be above the number in the card's corner? I think it explained the greyed out cards, but not the unchoosable white cards. When I got my Technology over 10, a lot of cards appeared, some of them were off-screen, and they interfered with the FINISH button. When I resized the game's window, the contents weren't appropriately resized.
Anyway, I like the idea, nice game, I've spent great time with it. It's fun, although it would be better if I fully understood the rules. It certainly has potential, keep up the good work! :)
DarkPixelAdventure by magicdidac 2017-12-22T22:10:30Z
Works on Linux! \o/ Very fun game, the theme is executed pretty well. The idea of reducing the field of view really makes it get worse, and that's exactly what we need here! I could only get to Level 04, how many levels are there? Some jumps are pretty much frustrating, but that's normal for a platformer. :D Some tactics are beneficial: it is wise to avoid the easy-to-get coins to get the harder ones with a greater field of view.
The art style reminds me of PRIOR which was a big success at Ludum Dare 19 – did it serve as an inspiration for you? It did for me... that game brought Ludum Dare to my attention and I made my first entry at LD26. :) Oh, nostalgia... So congratulations for your first entry, welcome to Ludum Dare! ;)
LD42 — Running out of space
Lemon by TroyD 2018-08-15T00:00:00Z
Note in advance: unfortunately I can't give you a rating because I didn't enter this Ludum Dare. :(
I saw your game on Tim's stream and I found it so awesome that I want to play it myself. One problem, though: maybe I'm missing something, but your itch.io page says the game is available for Linux, but the ZIP file (Linux_v7.zip) seems to only contain the Windows build.
The voice acting is awesome! Does the game watch what you do and give you speech accordingly? E.g. when Tim started to jump around, it said „we want you hopping like a bunny” or something, maybe it was not a coincidence. ;) Actually, I want to play the game to hear those lines!
