The Show Must Go On by Sestren 2014-05-07T01:46:00
Neat idea, with a lot of moving parts. It'd be nice to have some feedback to know how my 'show' was going.

Neat idea, with a lot of moving parts. It'd be nice to have some feedback to know how my 'show' was going.
Feels (and looks) like an Atari game, but it should really have some sort of time counter that you have to beat. That'd really make it feel authentic.
Great take on the Minesweeper mechanics! The hold-to-activate control needs a little feedback (perhaps a little animation to show you're doing something). This would work well on a touchscreen.
Fun action game. Doesn't use the theme strongly though.
Fun game! The music is good, but doesn't quite fit the mood. Nice ramp of mechanics as the levels progress.
Neat graphics, a little dark and hard to see on my laptop screen, though.
I really liked the mood of this! I had to crank the volume to properly hear the puzzle melodies though. A visual indication of your currently 'entered' song would help, or perhaps a way to clear your entry. My favorite game of he jam so far :)
I liked the NES-style music and SFX. They matched the sort of battletoads 'surfing phase' feel of the game play. I wish there were mines to do tricks though!
Jar works on OS X Mavericks. Nice graphics.
@csanyk Good advice! I want to tweak the behavior of the diver: it should take more than one turn to defuse mines or collect treasure, so that there's more danger of the sharks showing up.
As it stands, I think some challenging levels could be made, so the base mechanics are there.
@Sestren Hey, nice! I liked that level. People should check it out :)
Fun puzzle game!
I suggest making movement and digging much faster. I never saw "the boss"; perhaps that is a bug?
Reminded me of House of the Dead in more ways than one. Nice entry!
Web version has no sound in Firefox, and has game-breaking graphics bugs in Safari.
Short, but a good start of a platformer. Effective use of minimal graphics.
Nice graphics!
Fix the jump bug and how the gun doesn't seem to shoot where you aim, and this would be really solid!
OS X version seemed to work OK.
Great mood on this exploration game.
The controls were very skeumorphic ;) I felt like I'd been stuck at the helm of a real submarine. "What does this do? ... oh!" Then I went about exploring the deep, in a sort of meditative, calming way.
Also: This would be great with an Oculus Rift or similar! I might give that a shot later and I'll post back here.
Needs more stuff to find underwater though.
Whoa! Hard puzzle! Nice moody background music.
I'd like to see more of this game. As has been said, a set of ramping difficulty levels (as a sort of tutorial) would make this really shine.
Nice use of minimal graphics. I'd have liked the mechanic to be the opposite ('avoid the circles' instead of 'catch the circles'), though the levels ramped well.
Good sound effects and music
Interesting game...
Fun game! Nice graphics and mood. I felt like a doting mother checking everything back and forth. ;)
Neat graphics. The live video on the buildings was a nice touch. The music was good, but a little over bearing? It definitely set the mood :) The monster felt a little slow, and I think it'd have been more fun to smash things just a bit faster, or to include some sort of 'charging' mechanism.
hah clever ;)
Here's that sample level again:
L 3 0, L 0 -5, L 3 -4.5,
S -3 0,K -1 -1,
L 6 -2, L -2.8 -2,S 0 -4,
S 2 -4,P
The music was a little short and felt like it was looping too often. I liked the voice over for the items! Fun, straightforward game!
Neat mechanic, but seemed to breakdown after a few levels. Missing music and SFX really took something away. With all the carnage, some noise would be nice. Fun game overall!
Nice music. No sfx, but I think it was better without them. Not really my style of game, but I couldn't help but play it all the way through. The controls were a bit off... for so much precision platforming, it felt like I was sliding off platform constantly. Good graphics! If you ever played Jill of the Jungle on DOS a million years ago, this reminds me a lot of that.
I think you uploaded the wrong file. I get a download message instead of it starting.
Great game! I had fun. The sfx were good, as was the music. I'd have liked there to be more depth to the mechanics... for example the size of the foes didn't seem to matter. Keep up the good work!
Neat mechanic! I had fun. The music was a little too much with no SFX to add variety.
Found this through Feedback Friends after LD36.
Great game! I love puzzle games like this. The biggest problem is that the control to switch between normal and boxed shape is really hard to use.
Also the music doesn't loop perfectly, which makes my hair stand on end. But the mute options make that not an issue.
I love that it's randomly generated and that the puzzles are still reasonable. Great work!
Wow, nice game! Like a lot of people here, I was a little confused at first, but then I got it. I think if you ramped up the difficulty by giving easier ships first and then getting more and more complex ship orders you could teach the player more gradually. Right now, the player is really thrown in the deep end.
Good use of the PICO-8 graphics and sound. Great job!
You've got better controls than a lot of LD platformers, but the tilting effect made me feel a little sick when you had to change direction back and forth. It'd be better to have levels where you run the same direction most of the time so the tilting effect is more "special" because it'd happen more rarely.
I played it longer than I thought I would :) Effective and goofy
Wow great game! I played through the entire game just now. I liked the music and SFX. The graphics were great too. I liked the feel of the gun, but I sometimes I'd get stuck against a wall. The level design was good: there was a good mixture of different shapes, enemy arrangement, and textures. One frustrating point was when I'd move between rooms and would spawn right into an enemy with no chance to avoid the damage.
Overall, good job!
Wow, I didn't think doing that much mental math would be so fun. The music is a little repetitive, but the sound effects are fine. I like the two challenges at once: I was trying to add up the numbers as I put things in the basket. The little twist that you need to make sure kids don't buy beer is great too. Good job!
Nice controls and graphic effects... It's a fun little demo
Neat game! Waiting for the text was the only thing that I didn't like. Fun concept!
Neat game! Unfortunately I'm coming to it after a full day's work of programming for real so I'm not able to think through the puzzles well ;) I like the mood of the graphics and the pacing of the levels. I think I'd like some other sort of control scheme... perhaps more of a text editor? I'm looking forward to trying it out again later. Great job!
Thanks for the reviews everyone!
@BestNickname - Some more expensive things are 'worse' as a way to keep you on your toes! It means you have to do a little math to figure things out.
@cortica - Yep, the text is still there. I wanted to hide the text and it was a super easy way to "hide" it. I should have added a method to show/hide the text but I was in a rush!
@Cody Hansen - I actually learned a _ton_ by being 'thrown into the fire' for this one. It resulted in a less fancy game, but next time I'll have a good project start.
@gonutz - If you're interested in a minimal Typescript project with a build system, unit testing, and a way to deploy, all of those things should be setup by this commit: https://github.com/eparadis/LD36/commit/958b956cfae15ecfb1308b0d998522e3469bbfd4
Everything after that point is making the actual game.
@Frozen Fractal - Yeah, I think my idea to make people do math to figure out the best strategy missed the point of why people like to play clicker games. When I play clicker games, I'm always thinking about the "strategy" of which things are "the best buy". Maybe that isn't very common? Also remember there is the cost of the initial investment to consider.
And yeah, after doing TDD for a while, it feels wrong to not have some sort of tests. I broke down after a while, which you can see in the commits, because I couldn't think of a good way to mock the DOM. That's just inexperience on my part.
What's interesting is that as I was TDD'ing this entry, it made things easier. I thought "what's the new feature I want? OK write that test." Then I implemented it. It meant I was always thinking of game design first, which can be hard for me during an LD. I think next time I'll actually write a big pile of design goals as tests and then try to fill them in as the weekend goes on.
Wow great game! The tutorial did a good job of explaining how to play. Unfortunately the game hung up a few times. I'm looking forward to seeing more!
The controls were a little awkward. The first time I played I couldn't get anything to work. The second time I played, I played more slowly and go the hang of it. I like how the player has to balance doing different tasks. You don't get to focus as much on how the cool things you're making are affecting the "battle" up top though. Great job overall!
Were you going for "Adventure!" for the Atari? All you need to add is the dragon! The graphics remind me of old PC games I played in the late 80s. I suggest you try adding some quick sounds and background music next time. It's amazing how much more complete your game will feel, even if it's just some simple bleeps and boops.
wow! cool puzzle game. It seems that the screen is cut off for later levels because there's no scroll bar. It'd also be great to have a little intro to explain where you're eventually headed. Even just a hint saying "there's more operations that you see here".
wow fun game. I played it several times and I'm not sure I even understand what was going on. I got all the way to terraforming but I couldn't buy it.
