Wowwww good entry! The art-style is really looking nice. The game really fits the theme in all kinds of ways, specifically the intro :D. Great music too. ???

:( unicode isn't supported. I guess I'll use  then ;)
Wow :)
Cool idea, reminds me of that program that renders old snes games in 3d. Two tipps for improvement: 1) instead of spamming the space key, it would be better if space shot continuously 2) the camera on the boss needs some work since the boss is not visible if you run too far to either side of the room.
Hi, nice game and congratulations ! We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #36. We made the same thing at the previous jam.
Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description.
@chriiis88 : Thanks for your feedback. About your first remark, that's actually already the case. Just keep holding the button ;) Some enemies will drop a "F" power up for faster shooting.
I really like the artstyle and the turning effect when moving is neat.
The "tilting" effect was nice, graphics are okay. Good game, overall. :)
I like the 3D effect!! ;D
What an awesome idea! I played through it and loved seeing the classic sprites in a new way!
An effective use of 3D assets to make a 2D game pop-out and feel more dynamic. I enjoyed how the introduction pushed the player forward, although I felt the difficulty curve could have been steeper from there.
Overall a fun little game that successfully pays tribute to an 'ancient' era of games :)
I really liked the tiled 3D/2D style, and while short the gameplay was pretty solid. My only gripe would be that the boss felt like it just floated there and didn't really do anything. Would be fun to have it be a bit more challenging :)
Wow, this 2.5D camera tilting gives it a flavor different from other platformers. The quality is superb. For some reson, if i use ctrl button to shoot, the game crashes at certain point. This doesn't happen when shooting with space, however.
Good idea, the main menu feels really ancient :D Controls are good, the game feels smooth and the camera tilt is awesome way how to get a little bit more perspective to 2D game. I just didn't get what the F does, I assume it was kind of powerup. Maybe add a effect to it so it will be more distinct? Anyway, cool game!
@Lonely Vertex : Thanks for your feedback. I added Power up information in the description after reading your comment as it wasn't clear.
There is another weapon in the level that you have to find ;)
I also used this opportunity to add that the shoot button can be hold for auto fire.
Really love the OS and cracktro scene things you've added in. Feels very cohesive as a short love letter to the Atari ST. Would of loved to see those little guys you can goomba stomp from turrican in it! Also the another world bit was cool. I feel that although it's obviously derived from other games, you've done just enough to make it your own, I guess I would like more of that?
Nice game :) a bit too short otherwise great. Too bad nothing happend when I tried to drag the tos-file to the trashcan ;)
Love the art style and OS screen! Really cool game, nice take on theme!
You've got better controls than a lot of LD platformers, but the tilting effect made me feel a little sick when you had to change direction back and forth. It'd be better to have levels where you run the same direction most of the time so the tilting effect is more "special" because it'd happen more rarely.
Hooooly shit, this blew my mind. It definitely had the retro feel, but it was clearly a modern 3D game... Finished it on the first try, though, so not as hard as the games of yore! Music was solid, art was nice. Boss was too easy after I got the gun that shot 5 bullets at once. All in all, a very well-polished tribute. Love it.
I haven't seen much of the Atari ST period, but this is a very nice tribute!
Also, this redrawing 3D effect is very effective in making a simple platform game look amazing!
Very well done!!! (even if a bit short).
I really liked the music. The game itself was a bit strange with the interface that turned into a platformer. The platforming itself was a bit odd too. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to be able to jump off walls or not, but it happened often. Your gun fires so fast that all enemies, even the boss, are trivial. The art style was interesting, and I liked the tilt effect.
@smiley That would have been a wonderful easter egg XD Thanks for suggestion, I think I'll add this in a next version just for the pleasure of dropping another bomb error screen :D
Too bad, I really liked the art, the gameplay and the music. The controls, seemed very nice, but the tilting effect gave me motion sickness in less than 2mn.
I agree with NoTrueSpaceman, that levels when you change directions less often, would have made the effect more "special". Or maybe if the effect was much more smooth and slow.
This is a great game! Nice job! I do agree with everyone else, the art style was really cool. You should definitely make it longer. I personally had no issue with the tilting, but that may just have been me.
Congratulations!
nice interpretation of the theme. good job.
(and thanks for going through the trouble of making a HTML5 build with unity)
Neat game! Love the 80s retro-style graphics and music, and the use of 3D is interesting.
I started with the Windows desktop version first. The Windows 1/2 interface look at the start was cool, but I was a little confused as to why the Trash icon exited the game. It would have been even more confusing to me if I had started with the web version of the game first before trying desktop one, because the Trash icon does absolutely nothing on the web version, which would have led me to believe that it would have done nothing on the desktop version as well. Also, maybe it's just my browser, but there's no sound or music in the web version.
For the meat of the game, as fun as it was, it was pretty short. It was also too easy, as the obstacle provided little challenge - enemies, including the boss, had very simplistic AI, and non-enemy obstacles like the 3D boulders and spikes did little damage, which I had expected to take out like 1/3 or all of my life. The power-ups in the game, I found, made the already pretty easy game practically devoid of any challenge. Once I had the spread fire power-up, every enemy was practically dead while I just held the Space key down. I found the score system a little pointless, as it didn't do anything during or at the end of the game (no high score listing, no extra life after 1000 pts for example, etc.). As I mentioned, the 3D stuff was great, but I did find the 3D screen tilting effect to be a little disorienting and, honestly, annoying.
I'm not sure if they're merely bugs in the game, but on certain walls, I could wall hop on them, Mega Man style. I'm just gonna assume it was intended, since it appeared that you had to do this in order to get on certain platforms. Another bug is the boss fight - because it never leaves the 'boss area' boundary and just goes back and forth, I could just stand on a spot to the left without entering said area and blast it with the spread fire weapon, killing it before or not even entering the battle zone.
The ending part was also a little interesting. Unfortunately, I don't understand why the right-to-left, bouncing Marquee text had to move so slowly. I felt that quickly putting the message on a single screen letter-by-letter or making each sentence appear one by one would have been much more effective. The whole reason why I say this is that, whether on the desktop or web version, the bouncing-Marquee-whatever message actually cuts off without finishing and I get brought back to the Windows 1/2 screen.
This game certainly has a lot of potential, but it was just overly short, and it was too easy. I was expecting at least some challenge, but unfortunately I did not find it in this game.
I really liked it! It was not very challenging but it is certainly really nice. I loved the 2.5 tilting camera, it made it look like a descendant of both 2D platformers and doom for some reason. The gameplay is smooth and you can try to get some more coins (in a really classic way) just by jumping a bit more!
What I didn't like was that the boss was holding and smashing a big woman there?
I've submitted my comment before time. I would really like to see more of this :)
@Ebriosus : thanks for this very detailed feedback. You are right, I'm a programmer and making levels and art during LDs is always where I waste a lot of time. So I generally focus on building something which is at least playable first, and if I manage to have extra time (which I generally and sadly don't), I try to improve the level design. I really regret this game is so short too. I had planned way more than what's here. And that's why I'm going to work on it soon to release a longer version. The Windows 1/2 interface as you call it is actually a disguised main menu. I understand the trash is not a very intuitive "Quit" button. This is actually the Graphic Environment Manager (or GEM) for the TOS (as in the title of the game) which is the operating system of Atari ST computers. ;)
@kawzar : Thanks for your comment. No woman was harmed in the making of this game ;) That's a double reference to Turrican first boss and the introduction of Toki where his girlfriend get kidnapped.

Turrican in a Rick Dangerous level ? Hell YES.
It's so funny to see that the muscle memory from the first level of Rick Dangerous is still here, so many years after playing it.
I didn't know the end boss reference, thanks for the youtube videos.
@Strike hey thanks for pointing out the reference!! Didn't get it because I haven't played the game :)
Pretty much everything about this game was nice. I liked the 2.5D added into the retro theme.
I had problems getting used to the controls. I'm always so used to spacebar being jump, not shoot. If you were to make a post LD version, a controls menu could be nice.
I liked the secret area of coins... I died getting back from it.
Other than that, this game was great.
@AlexLamarche : thanks for your feedback. About the controls I'm using Unity input manager which (sadly) is only available on stand alone version. So if you really want to remap the controls, please download Windows, Mac or Linux builds.
Wow. This is really very nice game!
The camera tilting was a little disorienting at first for me but I adapted quickly. The merging of the 2D and 3D was done very well, good job!
This is a very visual-appealing game. Once you try it you discover controls are ok and there is a big level to explore wich makes game very replayable. With so few elements you achieved an interesting entry, there is a lot of merit here and a promising start for a bigger game.
The 3D-retro style is really special, you can feel a mysterious interesting combination of ancient pixels and 3D smooth animation.
The camera tilting felt a little too fast, I'm not sure, if you're using physics to drive the camera, maybe add some more drag?
Was a big fan of the ST game and what a great tribute. Brilliant pix->vox art style and fun camera work. You've very much captured the essence of the original.
Nice short game with a classic hand boss :D.
I really liked the menu. Really ancient!
Impressive art work, I love the sound effects, to hear those "weaaah" when you kill an enemy is really satisfying.
Good work on the boulders, you can let them crush your enemies for you, be killed by them or just destroy them right away, it gives a sense of multiple ways of playing the game.
Music is really nice and spot on with the general "style" of the game.
Controls are good, it would be nice to be able to shoot in all directions.
Your take on the theme is interesting and funny.
got wow effect from 2.5D graphics and when camera rotating, while you running, great effect!
Game have nice simple platformer gameplay with very very nice sfx! This shooting and hitting sounds make me happy! :)
There is pretty good level design, but there is short way for boss and no motivation to explore? (just to see power ups?))
Good entry for LD, good luck with it!
Make it more levels, more hardcore and good luck!
LOL that's the best menu!
I think you have the theme covered multiple ways, spikes are pretty ancient technology (I think, based on movies I've seen), so are coins, and Atari.
I disagree with your boulder physics, how do they keep following me and not get stuck anywhere? But then again they wouldn't be much fun if they landed and stayed put...
I like your 2D camera effect, it looks cool. Although I wonder if it would give me a headache or motion sickness after playing for too long haha.
Wow! Very good execution on the retro art and gameplay. Good work!
Very cool and fun game! I like the 3d Yet kinda 2d graphics. I did find the controls had a delay but, I assume that's because I was playing the web version!!!
I also like the camera effect were it moves depending which direction your guy is facing.
Over all its a nice game.
The game is OK. It is very easy, you can hardly die, except if you really try.
The boss can be shot half dead before the wall appears and the boss battle officially starts.
There are graphics glitches, it seems you have some off-by-half-a-pixel problems with your tiles here and there.
Shooting with that gun is cool. I don't recognize the reference, though, if it is one.
The graphics and music are great! I notice the 'Another World' boss scene. It does not fit the first part of the level, though. It looks completely different. I understand that you try to reference a number of different games here, but the change in terrains is very sudden and feels strange.
Clearly, a lot of heart went into this. The menu is neat, the graphics are an interesting blend of old and new. I do not know much about the Atari ST, but I assume that many of its games are referenced here.Clearly, a lot of heart went into this. However - the game is very easy and rather short. This would be okay if the first level was somewhat of a tutorial, but it is the last level, too. I can notice the time constrictions. Maybe you could have passed of this game as a demo version in universe? I do not know if that was a thing for the Atari ST.
I would love to play the "full version" with many more levels. This is carefully crafted, and it's a shame you did not have the time for more content / fine-tuning.
That was awesome! Turrican meets Dangerous Dan! Well done, I really enjoyed it even if it was short. Obviously can't give artistic credit to the ripped material. Nice mash up. :-)
neat style
I like the style of this game, that really stood out. It was difficult to tell where you were going sometimes, especially when you where going down. Neat game!
Enjoyed the art and style. The camera tilting was very unique and fun. While it was a "simple" platformer, your attention to detail made it surprisingly FUN...and thats what its all about!
