LD36 — Ancient Technology

PALEO by RIPPorkins 2016-08-30T04:48:00

The art is nice. Good animations. No obvious bugs other than it doesn't agree with Edge. I thoroughly enjoyed the idea of micromanaging the daily activities of a tribe. It needs an indication of what you might find in each tile. Maybe some stats on the animals would be good. I kept losing people to bears and such. Sometimes 2 on the same animal. I don't know if it's on purpose or not, but your cave people all look like women.

SwordSmith by videogreg93 2016-09-03T01:35:00

Nice game concept. Probably needs some of those user-friendliness things you would have added if you had more time. The core game mechanics are working though! It was pretty fun, and that's what makes a game.

The first thing I would add would be an indicator of how much time is left on a customer. The second would be to make the drop off the entire counter.

Good job.

Ancient Tower Defense by Gulyasarni66 2016-08-29T01:37:00

Pretty solid tower defense mechanics needs some UI love.

Madness of the Golden Relic by namu 2016-09-03T05:29:00

The graphics and control scheme is really good. Doing a multiplayer of any type in such a short period is amazing. Extreme level of polish for a game made in 72 hours.

I think the idea of using traps to slow/prevent your friends from moving forward therefore creating an aggressive race environment is great. But, something is missing here. I have a feeling that there isn't enough knowledge of what affects what and not enough time between moves. This makes it somewhat random as 4 players attempt to rush the middle.

Good job to your team!

Archaic Light by NinjaNic 2016-08-29T00:40:00

Nice pixel art style. Not much to the gameplay.

Unearth-Burial by abhimonk 2016-08-29T04:48:00

Nice music. Really good platformer mechanics. The story is a little short... meaning you couldn't really extend it into a longer game. But for an attempt at a poignant life lesson, it was good.

NERESIS - The Great Neon Shieldbarer by IshikawaNakamura 2016-09-03T01:45:00

The arena combat is a cool idea. It needs some story to go along with all the cool art.
Huge difficulty ramp really early makes it nearly impossible to do more than take some with you when you die.

The controls were tight and not buggy.
Not sure that the bad guys were shooting projectiles I could see. I think they were invisible.

Some sound would have been really cool.

Storm O.S. by kapricornmedia 2016-09-03T06:32:00

You have done an amazing amount of work on this. The art is well done. I especially like the little floppy disk images. It may have been more apparent what was needed in the text file if your compiler gave a respectable error message. (This IS fantasy and not reality after all... ;) )
Music is nice. Seems like you could develop the idea into a very long and involved story driven rpg.

The only drawback is that the majority of the gameplay mechanics were contained within the terminal which would seriously limit the game.

Great job.

Egyptian Builder by BurntFeelings 2016-09-03T02:04:00

Very nice platformer with good concept.
Jump is a bit lingering.
Hit boxes too big. I died walking near spikes...?

It's challenging and the enemy variation is good. Looks like you have the patrolling AI down. ;)
I am also going to pile on the zoom issue.

Good job!

Xolotl by SetTheBet 2016-08-29T07:40:00

I am terrible at platformers. This is what you have taught me. :) The graphics and animation are really nice. Especially the particle effects in the red fields. The concept of a mirrored teleport point lends to some really complicated level design. The controls are a little "something"... not quite sure what to call it, but often times I would press the down arrow and not teleport. I don't want to call it non-responsive, because it was responsive. It just required REALLY precisely timed pressing, which made it "feel" unresponsive.

Also, just because your entry was so good, I feel I have to ask what the "ancient technology" angle was, if any...

200 Generations by Traf d-Lo 2016-08-29T00:47:00

Quiz game, or just a quiz...?. Spinning was a little disorienting after a while. You missed an opportunity to teach people by not showing which was the correct answer. Must have taken a long time to find a source for obscure objects.

The Ancients Call by smilewood 2016-08-29T06:20:00

Definitely a game! Reminds me of Missile Command. except in a circle.
Already has fun, challenge and a story.
Now it needs sound and graphics.
Also, my finger is worn out. It needs to autofire or something. I probably clicked 1000 times.

Nice variation in enemies. Trading speed for hit points is pretty on point.

An Historic Defense by hermetic 2016-08-29T05:34:00

Not sure about the rules on this, but since most people can't play/enjoy it because of mouse sensitivity, I am calling it a bug and have uploaded a version with a slider on the start screen. I still have the original if it becomes an issue.. :)

@ValiaP @smilewood @KevKevOnFire @masterkrepta

An Historic Defense by hermetic 2016-08-29T07:11:00

@SetTheBet I did the player controller myself, because I wasn't sure if the LD compo rules would allow for the unity built-in fps controller.

An Historic Defense by hermetic 2016-08-29T15:48:00

@amras0000 - Fixed bug with not being able to rotate infinitely. I expanded the sensitivity slider to make it easier to select increments in the hundredths. At 0 it is actually a thousandth. You must have some CRAZY mouse sensitivity. At 0.1, my mouse barely moves the reticle. I don't know why you can't hear the sound. When you enter the level, a voice speaks and basically lays out the theme. You are in a World War 3 museum. The robots won. Picking up a weapon is a crime. So the robots are coming to get you. If I had more time, I would have littered the scene with exhibits relating to a world war. There should also be art hung on the walls.

@BurntFeelings - fixed health being backwards. I really wanted to put in headshots, but I had to rebuild the Global Illumination cache and it took 4 hours on Sunday.

@TheMightySice - fixed the mouse capture issue, I think.

Thank you guys for the feedback!

Wing Warrior by n42k 2016-09-03T18:45:00

Nice game. Lot's of content. Good tutorial and tutorial progression. The animation itself was simple, but the complexity of timing it with the movement speed was a nice touch.
Like everyone else says, a little feedback when you hit an enemy would have been good. Maybe a floaty health bar over their heads?

Great job.

DysAstrum by Mr. Chelnoque 2016-09-03T02:46:00

The puppet theatre thing combined with a space shooter is something I don't think I've seen. I like your aesthetic and sounds seem to fit with the idea of an actual puppet theatre (ie created by mouth).

You could benefit from some story... I was thinking pop-up(down) narration cards between planets... something like "Now off to save Naboo!" and "Oh no evil Mr Sun has come!"... I don't know what I was doing wrong in the boss fight, but I must have circled the sun for about 15 minutes shooting.

The crux of it all is this. I played it for a long while. So it must be pretty engaging and fun.

In all, I would call it a successful, well executed and awesome game. Good Job!

Temple Escape by jayemjee 2016-08-30T04:59:00

Pretty nice level design. Robot and Carolina are nice characters. I definitely agree it needs some sound. The darkness seems to suddenly rush in at certain locations making it really difficult to navigate.

Tribal Termination by Hero7785 2016-09-03T19:16:00

It's a complete game. Reminds me of old Atari games. A little difficult and unfair hitboxes for a game that you can only get touched 3 times in.
Good job.

Colossal Caves by Wolve 2016-09-03T06:59:00

Nice game! Graphics are well done, sound effects are well done. Control scheme is responsive and fits.
The only bad is the fairly repetitive gameplay.
I guess you would have put more content if you had more time. ;)
Not sure if I would rather see bad guys added, or more than one miner first...
Really nice game. Good job.

Rune Room by grlmc13 2016-08-29T07:51:00

Second room broke? I connected the lights on both sides and the door didn't open. Very nice puzzle mechanic though. The "glowing icons on cubes of stone" effect is really effective.
The mechanic is a lot like the sliding tile games. Once you have the pattern of moves, it becomes pretty easy to spam your way through it.

Still, really nice idea and nice looking game for 24h.

Cryptoglyphics by Bogden 2016-09-03T03:22:00

Simple crypto style puzzle game. The crowd-sourced glyphs is a neat concept. It could lead to some problems, like people creating the same glyph repeatedly. Other than that, I have nothing bad to say. It's a good implementation!

Ancient Motivation Technology by TheMightySice 2016-09-03T01:54:00

Awesome idea for a game. Great fun.
Sound effects were really good and motivated me to motivate them.
Controls were good. I felt like the slaves "attack range" was probably a little too big.

Needs power ups, slaves with different attributes, and random infinite levels. Then you could play it for hours.

You can't really keep up with demand for motivation, so you just end up kiting them around.
Still. Good job!

Decimus Maximus by mihaivdev 2016-08-29T02:58:00

Nice models. Good stylistic vehicle arena combat. I could see this being fun. Your tower has no weaponry and your catapult missile doesn't do damage.

Idle Slave Master Clicker by mrwillowb 2016-09-03T20:45:00

Cool clicker game. Pretty easy to figure out. Once you get to a certain point, the game is basically click slave, send to pyramid. Because there aren't any penalties for letting a slave die, you can just walk away and let them build the pyramid.

Because you can't upgrade pyramid workers, you can't balance them against the other workers. So you end with an abundance of rocks, stones and blocks.

I don't think the graphics are bad, just simple. What do you expect from a game made in such a short time?

Good job.

Cavemind by shimage 2016-08-29T03:32:00

Really fun. Nice choose 3 concept. The artwork is well done. 3330 on second play. 2 villages. I played it a few times, so that tells you something.

Lorem Ipsum or Engineering for a Civilized Age by amras0000 2016-09-03T02:24:00

The idea is really good; very thematic. The controls were a little touchy but worked. 3d snake game is a good idea. It really needs some more feedback when you are too low, or some indication of alignment with the openings on the water troughs. The music was great.
Well done.

Survive the Cave by WhiteSeal 2016-08-29T01:13:00

If you had an indication of what the tradeoffs were for each choice, then the game would be more of a strategy game. As it is, it's kind of a random walk until you figure it out. Also, it could benefit from some sounds, even if they were just 'click' noises for the buttons.

Roma Evolution [Zen Experience Type Game] by Zeriver 2016-09-06T15:29:00

Cool game. Nice visuals. Relaxing background music.
I suppose I beat it, since it went into an non-stop day-night cycle.

Seems like a good concept, kind of like Civilization for a single city. Binary choices make it sort of like a which-way or choose-your-own-adventure book. Unfortunately, there were so few choices that you didn't really lose anything that you didn't pick up almost immediately a couple days later. There also wasn't any resource management, so you basically had no drawbacks to choosing the best option each time.

Still, pretty decent game for a couple days work!

The Switch - Worker by Ghen 2016-09-03T03:01:00

Really fun. Great idea. Good pixelly art. The game mechanics were very game-y. Loved the boss. I think I would have included some kind of background music - like hold music. But it was fine without it. It's very Arcade-like, so maybe it needs a high scores board.

Good job.

The Eating Machine by ValiaP 2016-08-29T05:50:00

The aesthetic is pretty awesome. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes really easy to shove food, bounce up to the switch and shove food again in a fluid motion. It's very Zen. I am guessing the win text was supposed to be humorous and ironic. I just took it as a fact of life... ;)

Ancient Mars by negativegeforce 2016-08-29T06:03:00

Hilarious. Nice story-telling through camera-work. I enjoyed the pop-culture references. I actually laughed twice... Once when the JFK line came out and once at the end.... Good Job! Next time, write faster!! BTW, the jump animation got stuck for me. I don't think it detected landing. I basically skated the whole game with my hands in the air.

Kvetch-A-Sketch by mooncalf 2016-09-01T05:38:00

Love the etch-a-sketch-y-ness of it. Really fun physics game. The physics seemed to sometimes not be repeatable. The ball would bounce 2 or 3 different ways off of the same bit of line. This may have been intentional, but it made it difficult to adjust my builds with minor tweaks. Still I played it for a long time, so it must have been really fun! The music was good too, very fitting and didn't become annoying after listening to it for a long period of time. The little interlude/intermission ads done in the style of etch, were very well done and humorous.
Great game!

Siege of Scarborough Castle by masterkrepta 2016-08-29T07:07:00

I really like your graphics. I also like the idea of a shooter on rails in general as a game. This is a pretty "old-school" concept. The destructible buildings were nicely done! I think your path has some twists in it that messed with the turret angles; At one point, I was literally sideways and shooting (the crossbow bolt fell to gravity going horizontally!) It's really hard to aim and the lack of aiming feedback made it harder. Maybe leave the arrow sticking out of where it hit?

It was definitely fun! But it was also too easy, I am TERRIBLE at this game and I made it to the end. :)

Technology Rush by Crack498 2016-08-29T01:04:00

Interesting idea. I mined about 200 wood before I realized that you had to "die" to get the next day? (hopefully that's right) Tech tree is nice. Strategy is involved enough to make it interesting.

The Mighty Stick by mitya1234 2016-09-03T19:06:00

Very cool physics-based game. The small planetoid idea is very neat. The FOV made it feel like you were looking out of a space helmet, so I was fine with it.

Some heavy breathing or some other similar sound effect would have helped for me to internalize my predicament.

Loved the imagery of the stick sitting on a pedestal.

Great job!

The first trojan by ragnta 2016-08-29T03:09:00

Nice platformer. Fun while also being frustrating and repetitive. :) The art style is interesting like an old black and white film... reminds me of those old movies in the desert.

No Man Has Gone Before by KevKevOnFire 2016-08-29T06:40:00

Apparently I saved humanity! That's what everyone wants in a game. I needed some sound, I just played for about 20 minutes in silence. The aesthetic of the green screen is highly appropriate, but I didn't see the connection with the theme (maybe I am not thinking right). It was simple enough to understand that it didn't really need a manual, and the flavor text was clever and well done. I think a little red line on each of the gauges to show the "low-water mark" would be extremely useful.

Light of the Ancients by LooksLikeSomething 2016-09-01T05:12:00

Pretty good "bouncing lasers" game. I liked the "twitch" aspect where you had to get the orbs to light before your lasers are turned off by the little guardians. The artwork had a pretty cool aesthetic. There needed to be more of a delay/celebration when you succeeded so you could gloat more. Instead, it jumped really quickly to the next board.
The music was fairly appropriate for the game and was pretty enjoyable.
In all, good job!

WakeUpCall() by quill18 2016-09-03T01:16:00

Great Rogue-like. Lots of fun. You could have used ☺ for your main character and made it a dwarven warbot.. ;) Loved the references and creative content. Don't people normally spend 7 days on these?

I ran into an update bug or something when I sat on the inventory screen examining items for a while, but esc and back in and everything cleared up.

I have a collection of your games sitting around and play most of them. This is great addition.

Lost Artifacts by rynti 2016-08-29T03:45:00

Really fun! Nice. Press any key to revive didn't seem to work. This is a nice concept for a game... very Hammerwatch-y and addictive. Love the sound effects, pixel art is cool. Needs more monster variation and some kind of defensive power.

Ancient Heritage by indieyp 2016-08-29T04:18:00

This game really needs some kind of UI to indicate what you need to do. It's beautiful and the music is trance, but I still don't know what the point is after 4 tries. Really like the cool imagery though.

Long Story Short by Dia6lo 2016-08-29T06:51:00

Fun game. A bit short. The emotions depicted in your character are great. I actually think the best part is the fire starting. You could probably do a speed meter on just that part and make an entire flash-franchise on who can start fires the fastest.
The game didn't actually accept the arrow keys in Edge browser for some reason.

Ogg and the Obelisk by SimonHutchinson 2016-08-29T02:36:00

Nice use of Pico-8. Proper old-school game. Good interpretation of the theme through caveman/obelisk. Gameplay is a bit one dimensional. Need tohou style bullet sprays..!

LD37 — One room

Witchy Potions by Verrazano 2016-12-13T07:55:00

Nice matching game. Good implementation. Works in every way as expected except it doesn't keep doing matches after the tiles fall. Kind of a stretch for the theme though ;)
Sound is appropriate. Could have used a warning or 'hurry-up' notice for the timer getting low.

Holo by Galan 2016-12-15T05:09:00

Very interesting concept. It seems that maybe the graphics of the game didn't keep pace with your vision. I think you need to adjust the position of the weapon to better indicate the strike area. Still, quite a feat for a weekend. Good job! :)

DangerRoom by hermetic 2016-12-13T16:50:00

@TheMonsterFromTheDeep - Totally agree. Needs music badly. I even downloaded some tools. Alas, I am not a music composer. Maybe I will work on that for the next LD. The difficulty curve was tuned by me playing it. So maybe it's wrong. My best score so far was Wave 10 ~ 21k pts.
@MrEvilGuy - Awesome job. Thanks.
@erik - Definitely better with a dual-stick controller.
@Zarkonnen, @ambi, @tylerraz - Thanks
@jcmonkey - They are supposed to point in different directions.
@fdr - Good point, the cursor gets lost in the action when playing with a mouse. I didn't notice as much because most of my playtesting was with a controller.

Block Bullies by Lucas Knutson 2016-12-13T02:22:00

The buzz when I hit the wall the first time was deafening. It's a good solid game concept. I don't know if it's my pc, or the way the game is meant to run, but everything moved REALLY fast, including the player. I couldn't actually WASD or I just ran off the side instantly.

Needs more parkour.

Back To Your Room by jramell 2016-12-14T16:11:00

Solid little platformer. Interesting that the bad guys are glasses of beer? Definitely need to work on controller support. Music, sounds, and general atmosphere of the game is pretty on point. Pushing dead enemies around is an interesting mechanic that reminds me of kicking turtle shells with Mario.

Agoraphobic by tylerraz 2016-12-13T07:31:00

You are the first game maker, so far, to make me laugh right out of the gate. The graphics are cool. I like how the enemies change based on your choice. The helicopter noise is interesting.. :) Needs more feedback when you get hit. The counter goes down, but I am not looking at the counter, I'm avoidin' missiles. Good game. Don't let the outside win!

the beuys are back in town by tylerdoggone 2016-12-14T03:01:00

I appreciate the level of art and programming that went into this. I don't think I would call it a game; It's more of an interactive art piece to me. The music is entertaining and at just the right level of interest to keep it from grating after playing for a while. Good job!

flwr truss plus by wscones 2016-12-13T07:11:00

This game wouldn't be as tedious if it had regular mouse look controls. Everything else is fine. Go collect flowers, be an alien, take orders from a box, see weird colors, listen to trippy music. It also might have helped to have a story. The teleportation effect was awesome.

Escape The Room by egordorichev 2016-12-13T06:56:00

Nice little ascii-style puzzle game! I couldn't get past the 3rd floor as well. Music is soothing. It felt weirdly laggy at times? Not sure what the deal was there.

Hanging Out by VanderHum 2016-12-13T07:46:00

Very strange, but pretty. Music is nice. Not a game, more of an interactive art project. I don't think I have the qualifications to critique it on it's art quality or emotional content, but if I call it a story-game thing... like Telltale makes, then I have to tell you to put all of the description you have above into the game; Just a box with the text telling the backstory. Otherwise, you have a "game" that is "a dude wakes up, goes to make tea, another person plays piano, first dude wants to die."

One passage room by Dyn 2016-12-15T04:46:00

Nice game concept. Graphics are nice; you can't really get a good look at them because they are so small. Controls are a bit weird. Still, it's a complete game! Liked the animations a lot as well.

One Way Out by Broxxar 2016-12-18T19:54:00

Wow, nice graphics (lots of shadows in those corners ;) ). Very nice smooth "wake up". The music is pretty cool. Neat object interaction for clues. Were you supposed to get sucked out the window? I couldn't fit one of the equations, so on one of the symbols I guessed. I guess "needs better indication of victory" would be my only real negative-ish comment.

rot by emmelineprufrock 2016-12-15T05:19:00

Good story, good mastery of the setting, well drawn characters; You should probably continue it. Not really a game, though. In my opinion, the prose is really over dramatic for the subject matter. Maybe I don't read a lot of post-apocalyptic fiction though....

Oner-OOM by srakowski 2016-12-14T03:31:00

It could use scoring, or something to motivate the character. Maybe upgrades or something? I miss having some kind of feedback that I hit or was being hit beyond watching the health bars move.

The Employee by pLaw 2016-12-13T03:06:00

I love the theme interpretation/spinning floor section mechanic. The lighting is really good. I am in agreement with you, not a game as much as just an interactive art piece.

Word Decor by ethankennerly 2016-12-15T04:26:00

Pretty sure this accepted words that didn't seem to make sense. Not really my style, but seems to be a complete game. Is the sign off on the "cost"? Needs some sounds as well. Other than that, good job.

In a Cell by NoahCagle 2016-12-14T06:04:00

The cellmates didn't fight back. Not really much here to comment on.

Super Battle Cycle by PowerSpark 2016-12-13T02:36:00

A mostly complete game. Congratulations! Graphics style is nice. I have to echo everyone else on the Motorcycle-with-a-grappling-hook thing. Maybe would have worked better with some top-down-style WASD instead of steering-style WASD. I don't know how else to say it. The music seemed just about right for this game.

Really good execution.

Carnival Host by JohnGalt 2016-12-13T02:53:00

Kind of a nice little game. Don't get much of a story, so it's just memory and semi-rapid key presses. Not sure what the point of the "Dream" race thing is. It would make a good game to keep small children busy. :) Technically, you probably want to extend a shielding graphic out the sides. At a 16:9 resolution, you could see the actors moving on- and off-stage. Nice, clean, simple art!

ISS - Infuriating Space Simulator by Scruffy 2016-12-13T02:09:00

Needs more of "something" to make it less frustrating. Maybe a little more forgiving-ness?... Maybe I just don't like games that require such precision in maneuvering. The voiceover and other audio was fantastic. The graphics were good. I think the theme was pretty much nailed since I just spent 15 minutes floating in space with a single room.

Space Attack by laylow 2016-12-13T03:48:00

This game had a good story. The game play was a little too fast. I beat it on the first try by just moving the repair modules around. If the enemies came a bit slower and the damage took a bit longer, it might become more of a strategy game. The dialog is pretty good, but I spent more time reading dialogue than playing. Was it supposed to have no sound?

Dungeon 2.0 by TheMonsterFromTheDeep 2016-12-13T08:14:00

This is a complete game. Great fun. I LOVE these kinds of games. The skills work very well and cycle back to default while recharging (seems to work intuitively). I spent a lot of time mashing my space bar though, so I wonder if it shouldn't have just "auto fired" when I held it down. If I had to guess at what it's missing is some kind of defenses... or maybe invulnerability frames? A better indication of the boss monster? Classes? HEALTH DROPS!.... Good job!

The Cranks by DemiPixel 2016-12-14T02:47:00

Nice concept. Instead of hit points, failure to protect the base results in less time/space to protect the base. The graphics were pretty well done. Movement felt correct for a helicopter-tomato-thing. Sounds were good. Music good.

Good job.

Royal Rise (Online Multiplayer) by thebrickanator 2016-12-15T04:14:00

I can't believe you managed to get a client sever game running in such a short time. WOW. It needs instructions. Pretty awesome game idea. My game bugged out once and I never spawned on round 2, got some random colors at the bottom of the screen though. You should also probably prevent resizes.

DOOMTANK by djfariel 2016-12-14T05:58:00

Incredible game. The first thing I notice is the quality of the music. Couldn't get the mouse to work...Didn't know why...Didn't care once I realized I could dual-stick it. Now I've read the description, I realize it doesn't start with mouse working.. :) Squarely in my top genres of games.

Great job guys!

Dungeon Custodian by ursagames 2016-12-14T05:40:00

Really good game! The 3D effect when mousing around was really well done. It's a little slow, but I guess that doesn't really matter with this kind of management game. Not exactly one room. :) The art was really well done.

Swanky Otter Soccer by hijomo 2016-12-15T04:32:00

Nice. I have a weird feeling that this was supposed to go somewhere else and time snuck up on you. The Otter with a top hat model is pretty flawless. The room is a nice model. Needs better lighting. Controls were fairly tight. No score, or any indication of actual gameplay or motivation... still pretty fun the first 6 or 7 goals. : )

Freedom by Cody Hansen 2016-12-14T04:18:00

Good game. Graphics, music and sound were well done and matched the mood of the game. There was a lag sometimes when the player would not respond to key presses, or would continue moving after released, but it was still pretty fun to play.

Bat Cave by schizoid2k 2016-12-13T06:40:00

Pretty basic game, but conceptually complete. Needs a high score indicator to finish out the arcade feel.

Kitchen Defender Ants Attack! by KunoNoOni 2016-12-14T04:10:00

The ants arrived about 4-5 times faster than the tank would respond to shooting. Power ups help, but not completely. Still, it's a complete game. Instructions and everything.

Interesting idea. Seems like it could use some in-game story-telling. Maybe the actions could be narrated by the character. kind of like "I always hated this picture"..or "Maybe I should get some clothes on before the neighbors think I some kind of crazy person."... etc...

Pinball is such a high level to aspire to. I completely admire your attempt. It's definitely a pinball game! The physics are close... The sounds are cool; I miss the "ball rolling on the table" sound, though. The modeling was nice. It is pretty shocking that you could get through a table design at all in 48 hours; You did a design and coded it. Congratulations.
