I had a lot of fun with this. Very simple but still great. I love how you have to always keep moving to find ammo, you can't just stay in one place. Also the robot killing animation was very satisfying.

masterkrepta 2016-08-29 01:39

I really like the game. i would add some smoothing to the mouse cursor, might just be my precision mouse but the motion feels very fast, almost making me dizzy.

everard999 2016-08-29 03:55

a FPS <3 ! Aewsome pal!

kevkevonfire 2016-08-29 04:18

Hey, its completely playable. Better than a lot of first-time LDs. My suggestion for simple ways to improve this:

1) I found the mouse sensitivity to be crazy high, bring it lower or even better, add an option.
2) Needs feedback on player health and ammo count. Death and running out of ammo just kind of... happen.
3) Make the gun you have disappear from its stand until you pick up a different one. The need to run around to find new guns is really cool, but mitigated if you just camp one stand.

smilewood 2016-08-29 04:23

This is quite fun to play! I like your take on ancient technology. The only problem that I had with the game was the very twitchy nature of aiming some of the weapons, but that may be down to the settings that I have on my computer. Nicely done.

negativegeforce 2016-08-29 04:23

A very playable game. Some things I noticed.

Right click to pick up a weapon? I tried using R and Space.

I felt limited to staying around the tables with the guns. The fact I can just drop an empty gun and pick it up again later full of ammo bothered me.

Some ammo crates would have been nice.

The robots actually seemed pretty clever and the graphics looked pretty good.

valiap 2016-08-29 05:18

Kind of fun actually. The scene mood was cool. But it would be great if you add a mouse sensitivity or something. My cursor moved way too fast and it made me dizzy.

hermetic 2016-08-29 05:34

Not sure about the rules on this, but since most people can't play/enjoy it because of mouse sensitivity, I am calling it a bug and have uploaded a version with a slider on the start screen. I still have the original if it becomes an issue.. :)

Like it!! You dont need more than this for a FPS to be fun. Simple art and sound but the controls feels really good. Did you do the fps controls yourself? Nice!

bogden 2016-08-29 07:08

Good ol' FPS fundamentals. Great for a first LD! Glad you took the time to put audio in, the intro really takes it from a little demo to a game with a neat setting.

hermetic 2016-08-29 07:11

@SetTheBet I did the player controller myself, because I wasn't sure if the LD compo rules would allow for the unity built-in fps controller.

jk5000 2016-08-29 07:40

A really great first LD game. A bit more work on the graphics and I will have nothing to complain about. Well done.

ghen 2016-08-29 08:00

very solid first LD entry, good thing that you include mouse sensitivity setting on the main menu, its needed on fps game
anyway, the control is not bad, but a bit floaty especially when jumping and moving
i like the minimalistic style, the particle when enemy spawn/die is also pretty cool
1 problem tho, it seems theres no feedback when the enemy shoot you, it make the same noise when enemy regular shot and when the enemy actually shoot you

qwaklak 2016-08-29 08:42

Nice . http://screenshot.sh/mLd7fHXj9yQm6

amras0000 2016-08-29 09:53

There's a couple really big issues that kill the game for me:
First, the mouse sensitivity is insane. I can't bring my hardware down any lower and since you're in unity I can't trivially change the code to fix it, so I wasn't able to get past the first level. Aiming is just a battle to see that I don't spin out.
On top of that (and more obvious because of the sensitivity), it seems that if I turn too far left or right I stop turning. In an FPS I kinda expect to be able to turn in one direction indefinitely.
You may want to upload a Post-LD version with those balance changes so your game's actually playable.

Those aside: sound didn't play for me and it was kinda missing since there wasn't a lot of feedback. I'd have liked to see bullets represented somehow outside of a decal on the enemy, either as a little pellet or my own laser beam. I want to know where I hit the wall when I miss. But those are all issues that require time to fix, so no biggie on not getting them this time around.

And some minor nitpicks: It was a bit difficult to realize when I was in range to pick up a weapon. You may want something like a "RMB - pickup shotgun" to appear if the player's looking at a gun and in range of it, so I'm not clicking frantically from just outside the pickup range.
The shotgun also feels like its range is far too small, but maybe that's just me.

The inability to reload is actually kinda cute, forces the player to switch weapons frequently. And being without a weapon in the middle of combat is exciting.

I've got to wonder how this all ties in to the theme though. The robots are pretty generic futuristic, not much ancient about them. I'd have liked to see spear combat, or at least an ancient-egyptian aestheti (basically just color the walls and robots yellow :P)

burntfeelings 2016-08-29 10:02

wow its a really solid game for a first time you even inculded sound effects with what I struggled but you did it. Game plays good only weird thing i noticed is that health is backwards ? also you should have included a headshot mechanism its not that hard, You should have written controls here or made a in-game tutorial but yeah its a really nice game for a first timer

themightysice 2016-08-29 10:27

It's playable, but with a second screen, when looking around my cursor leaves the first screen and as I click to shoot the game minimizes :(

hermetic 2016-08-29 15:48

@amras0000 - Fixed bug with not being able to rotate infinitely. I expanded the sensitivity slider to make it easier to select increments in the hundredths. At 0 it is actually a thousandth. You must have some CRAZY mouse sensitivity. At 0.1, my mouse barely moves the reticle. I don't know why you can't hear the sound. When you enter the level, a voice speaks and basically lays out the theme. You are in a World War 3 museum. The robots won. Picking up a weapon is a crime. So the robots are coming to get you. If I had more time, I would have littered the scene with exhibits relating to a world war. There should also be art hung on the walls.

@BurntFeelings - fixed health being backwards. I really wanted to put in headshots, but I had to rebuild the Global Illumination cache and it took 4 hours on Sunday.

@TheMightySice - fixed the mouse capture issue, I think.

Thank you guys for the feedback!

indieyp 2016-08-29 20:38

Nice first try, keep up the good work

ishikawanakamura 2016-08-30 10:01

Nice game, but hard

shimage 2016-08-31 03:17

I survived until wave 5. Very fun! I thought it was more interesting if there is feedback damaged. Robot approaching without sound were horrible. Good work!

mooncalf 2016-09-01 20:17

Great work! The 3d objects were primitive but I like them that way. I liked the death animation for the robots.

Sometimes it was a bit glitchy picking up weapons but it was very playable. Most of the things missing I am sure you would have added if ya had the time : muzzle flash, dmg taken sounds.

Congratulations on your first LD! Can't wait to see your next.

kapricornmedia 2016-09-03 05:10

Nice premise! Made it to round 4

mitya1234 2016-09-03 06:17

Nice entry. So I liked the idea and gameplay. Got to second wave.

n42k 2016-09-03 08:29

Highest wave first try: 5.
Highest wave second try: 10.

Graphics are okay, sound effects are decent. Default mouse sensivity was fine. I loved how difficult it was at the beginning when starting out, it was quick to figure out too! Unfortunately, by the end of the game, it felt repetitive for me, their AI is rather easy to beat and I feel there isn't much I can do when I make a little mistake and lose 1 HP permanently (Maybe next time you could add a way to recover health?).

Either way, a very good game, especially if it's your first one. Congratulations!

hero7785 2016-09-03 17:12

I wish there was an arrow pointing to the closest enemy, but besides that it was fun.

aucguy 2016-09-04 03:12

Great game and pretty fun. The particle effects when you hit an enemy was pretty useful. The one thing I would really add were sounds for getting hurt and enemies walking towards you. This would make the player's conditions easier to understand. Basically minor things.

zeriver 2016-09-04 06:46

I like how "robot lady" explains basics mechanics at the beggining, perhaps she could say something to narrate situation from time to time, like when new wave starts or you are almost dead etc. I think that would add to the experience. Gameplay is satisfying and fighting robots is challenging. I noticed that if you are shooting enemies from too far, they don't get damaged. I know that's probably because players could exploit ai and shoot them from the corner of the map but it would be nice if there was some other fix for that exploit. Pretty solid entry, especially for first Ludum Dare, good job.

xesenix 2016-09-04 08:03

Robots hit rate is 100% and they always move in player direction you cant try to surprise them from behind also robot shot animation looks like it would miss. Maybe add some visual indication to firing and getting hit. This game needs some dodge mechanic. Whatever that robot said on beginning his voice made me completely ignore him :|. Beside that games works good didnt explode my pc like some others :D

casevse 2016-09-05 14:13

Simple but addictive. You always have to be moving and picking ammo. Good work!

gonutz 2016-09-10 09:56

You should name your download file "A historic defense" or something similar, not "Linux_Universal". Makes it easier to browse my downloads folder with dozens of LD games ;)

When I try to start the 64 bit linux executable it crashes and prints:

Set current directory to /home/<me>/Downloads/Linux_Universal
Found path: /home/<me>/Downloads/Linux_Universal/AnHistDef.x86_64
There is no data folder

(I am omitting my user name here)
