LD35 — Shapeshift

Skywind Temple by Ogniok 2016-04-19T01:14:00

Very polished, nice looking graphics, energetic orchestral tracks, and interesting level design. I think the showing off of your levels through mini checkpoints was a fun and interesting idea, though I would have liked to see the checkpoints a little more spaced out. I only played single player, though, so it might have made more sense in multiplayer. Overall, I did like the game!

ShiftHeroes by Remicy 2016-04-19T01:35:00

I really liked the art style and pacing of the game. The gather stuff, level up, gather more stuff, kind of gameplay is well done. There was definitely a lot of confusion for the compo version, though, and a lot of information to digest right off the bat for a game with such simple gameplay.

Overall, I still thought it was a solid game.

Blobs by Swynfel 2016-04-19T00:40:00

I think the physics based puzzling was really innovative and well done. The blobs felt a little too slippery at times, but it didn't get in the way of playing out almost all of the puzzles anyways. The concept fit the theme very well, and overall I had a good time playing it! Though I did get stuck at level 14. Great game, though!

We Made Rock Paper Scissors by GenericTeamName 2016-04-19T01:23:00

I love this game so much! Everything from the ridiculous title to the adorable sound effects are my type of humor!

In terms of gameplay, the rounds are short and sweet, yet rewarding. There's something great feeling about knocking an enemy far away with a squeaky toy sound! It's also well balanced, as you might expect, being based on the most balanced game in creation.

My only complaint is that the controls, while responsive, intuitive, and clean, are mapped to rather finger cramping locations.

Everything taken into account, this game is still fantastic in almost every way!

Psychopaths by GammaS 2016-04-19T00:56:00

The concept is interesting but the execution was unfun. There was little in terms of gameplay, and there wasn't a clear sense of direction in where the game was going. For example, where were the psychopaths going to spawn? Was there a rule that could direct you towards more of a type of shape? Did different shapes behave differently? Playing the game felt directionless. Games like this should have a clear direction on where to improve.

Polytopian by sudojess 2016-04-19T21:21:00

The idea is brilliant! I am in love with the concept of this game. The concept is both insane yet intuitive and the implementation is extremely well done; the puzzles play easily into your mechanic.

The biggest things that hold back this game are the terrible controls and a couple bugs when in between dimensions. The controls really never need to be so slippery, and a game like this really needs to have strafing and mouse controlled camera. The player should be learning your core interesting mechanic, not an arbitrary new control system.

Overall, the controls and the bugs did not take enough away from the innovative idea and interesting implementation. I would love to see more of this game!

ANTIGRAVITY by eeely 2016-04-19T00:22:00

I think the art style is very interesting and the premise was interesting and innovative, but the ideas never seemed to come together. There were several moments where the game was trying to explain to me what the premise was, but I don't feel like I understood it.

I definitely like that it tried to do something different, though, and would love seeing this idea developed a little further.

Elemental Crawler by EthanBierlein 2016-04-19T21:02:00

The game just doesn't seem playable. The controls work fine and probably as intended, but there doesn't seem to be any control I have over getting swarmed in the first 5 seconds. The powers are all the same, and playing a twin stick shooter without having control over aiming outside of movement is very uncomfortable.

Neon Shapes by Srednuht 2016-04-19T01:05:00

Great concept, nice visuals, and catchy music. and fun gameplay. My only quips are that the changing feels somewhat unresponsive at times, and that the difficulty doesn't scale quickly enough, but they're somewhat minor in the face of the rest of the game. Great job!

Mass Squire by BattleReadyGames 2016-04-19T21:09:00

I like the concept, but in the end it doesn't really affect the gameplay, it still is just a shoot at things until they die kind of game. Still, everything worked smoothly and even as just a shoot at things until they die kind of game it was still enjoyable.

Realm Shifters - Collect Orbs Edition by mkghoster 2016-04-19T21:35:00

The graphics are gorgeous, but unfortunately I wasn't able to play much of the game, as for some reason the controls were totally broken for me.

LD42 — Running out of space

Alien by ghust1995 2018-08-14T20:07:30Z

I love the concept of this game! It's so simple and intuitive yet unique and innovative. It's a great multiplayer twist to the floor disappearing mario party style minigames. The game is also extremely well polished for a jam game; it's got solid animations and sound design for every aspect of gameplay.

Overall, I would highly recommend the game!

If you have friends online, I believe you can play the game using Parsec https://parsecgaming.com/, though I haven't tested it myself.

Disembodied by MouthlessGames 2018-08-14T19:23:54Z

What a fantastic game! I love the idea behind the story and the dual meaning used for approaching the theme "running out of space". The atmosphere was excellent, the story progressed really smoothly and the resolution was very impactful. My only complaint is that the final scene in order to sync with the music the text scrolling was slowed down very much and I grew bored and impatient waiting for the text to come. I would love it if that part was sped up. Everything else I felt was superb.

I highly recommend this game, it is certainly more than meets the eye!

To other commenters: please do not spoil the story in your comment.

To new players: the other commenters may have given away the story, please play the game anyways to experience the story as intended by the developer.

Package Overload by Pete 2018-08-25T02:09:13Z

This game is so simple it's genius! The core gameplay loop was addictive and polished, and the difficulty scaling was perfect. The box designs worked excellently for fast pattern detection and gave the game an extra layer.

A simple review for a perfectly simple game. I cannot recommend this game enough!

Detox by FiloGC 2018-08-14T19:45:03Z

This game is perfectly simple and short! The gameplay loop is fast, physics based fun and is very easy to pick up and put down. The art is clean and easy to parse with the perfect amount of polish.

I highly recommend this game!

Kzoh by witylernn 2018-08-14T23:33:34Z

The movement is extremely fast and I seem to instantly die as soon as the platform disappears. Am I doing something wrong or is this game unfinished?

Descension by Dragojt 2018-08-14T16:23:31Z

7zip unzipped the archive with no issues for me.

The game is lovely! The gameplay is simple, easy to pick up, and pretty satisfying. Some of the puzzles were pretty clever I think, especially the ones in the ice area. The music seemed only to kick in on the ice area, but the track that played was chilled out and nice to listen to, though certainly not fleshed out too much. The art alongside the gameplay are very polished. Overall, the game was a relaxing pleasant experience that I would recommend.

Bag Packer by Improx Games 2018-08-14T16:46:06Z

The game seems broken for me, when the bag fills up to 5, nothing seemed to happen and no new bag showed up.

Despite this, I can still see a lot of potential in the design. The free flowing drag and drop tetris concept is a lot of fun, and there's a lot of humor to be had in stacking giraffes on top of apples and watching them be crushed. The hand drawn art style is lovely and whimsical and really contributes to the goofy nature of the game.

Overall, for the first bag I packed, I had a lot of fun! Though the game didn't let me continue, I'd still recommend this game to experience the interesting concept and charming art.

Reply All by Dilem 2018-08-17T23:44:48Z

I love this game! The concept is like a light-hearted and goofy version of papers please set in an average office setting, certainly a concept that is very unique in ludum dare. I think it works fantastically, with the player learning to balance closing ads and doing small tasks with reading contents of emails for other tasks. The papers please format allows for some humor to be plugged alongside the gameplay and the result is a charming and funny game.

Unfortunately, because this was a jam game, the concept didn't get to be explored to its fullest potential. I'd have loved to see more variety and comedy in ads and in emails. Similarly to papers please, characters began to be established, but more fleshed out "storylines" for these characters could have been fun to see.

Regardless, the lack of depth is easily forgiven for the lack of time to work. I would still definitely recommend playing this game!

Reptiloid Simulator by Mark Chepicov 2018-08-14T16:11:19Z

The gameplay and story concept are both really unique! I love the sense of humor in the tutorial paired alongside the urgency in the music and the seriousness of humanity surviving. The gameplay itself is interesting and pretty fun but I was gated out of some content because of unresponsive controls: my click would often not register to create or delete space. Overall, the humor and unique gameplay carry the game well!

Cybermind by GrizzledBoor 2018-08-14T18:05:16Z

Everything involving the dialogue system is the winner here. The art for the character reactions is expressive, clean and just pleasant to look at. The dialogue in the game is silly, tongue in cheek, and pretty funny. The rushed ending made me laugh out loud!

The gameplay doesn't seem to really exist. The augment system seems kind of irrelevant, since I could always just stop and equip what I needed when I needed it, so I might as well just have had all the functions all the time. With the battle augment and the door hacking augment, the game basically turned into a walking simulator.

Overall, I'd still recommend the game for the fun dialogue and great artwork.

Ludum Dare Simulator 2019 by samboyer276 2018-08-14T16:58:35Z

10/10 would do ludum dare immediately after doing ludum dare again

The game is hilarious! Every mechanic outside of some of the more basic puzzles made me laugh out loud. My favorite moment was when I clicked art and the game wanted me to draw the scream with a mouse in <15 seconds. The tasks definitely overwhelmed me, nothing was completed, I ran out of energy too much, debugging was impossible, and at the end the struggle amounted to a lukewarm rating at best. The simulation was too accurate :(

The cheesey 90s workout montage music fit perfectly, and the artstyle was clean and polished, though nothing to write home about. The real hero is the humor and gameplay.

Fantastic game, cannot recommend enough!

Eclipse Galaxy : A Smuggler Story by chadrbanks 2018-08-27T23:47:33Z

Really interesting game! Resource management non real time strategy is a refreshing style of gameplay in a game jam such as Ludum Dare. It took me a bit to figure out what I was doing, but once I figured out I fell in love with the concept. I'm really impressed by the effort put into balancing the prices of everything on all the planets. The moment I realized this was not like a typical rpg where all shop prices were the same was really memorable!

Great job, I had a great time playing the game!

Shrinking Bubbles by StJester 2018-08-14T17:06:21Z

Interesting concept that feels like it wasn't really fleshed out enough. The core mechanic is an interesting resource management problem, but there wasn't any challenge and definitely not enough hurdles to jump to get to the next bubble. The controls were simple and very intuitive. I particularly liked the effect for drawing the path.

Overall, I think the concept is interesting, but some challenge could be added to spice things up a bit.

Fuoco and Tenebra by Optimans 2018-08-14T17:27:46Z

The art and music remind me a lot of the old salad fingers flash animations which really hit a great creepy tone for the game. The monsters with their long fleshy legs were excellent and made creepy noises. The slow dissonant piano plinking alongside the crackling of the fire serve as a dark background to the game's design.

The gameplay is serviceable and definitely fits the theme. I feel like more could have been done with darkness and sound design/animation of the monsters to add more to the fear factor the rest of the atmosphere provides.

Overall, I think the game is definitely worth checking out. It has pretty unique gameplay and very impactful art and sound design.

Escape Earth by Vedal 2018-08-14T17:17:40Z

I love the fact that I can just be "creative" in my rocket design and just throw whatever I wanted wherever i wanted! The concept seems similar to KSP, and since I have not designed a rocket before in real life nor in KSP, I found myself totally lost in the design, throwing parts wherever I could. It was, however, very satisfying to see that the overlapping rockets I had mashed onto the side of my ship did indeed launch my rocket out of the screen at an incredible speed. So fast, in fact, that I could not track it with the camera in any way, the only evidence of the fruits of my labor the increasing score.

Thanks for the game, I had a "blast"!

SteamRush by Tralius 2018-08-14T17:54:25Z

The music is absolutely my favorite aspect of this game. The haunting chords in the title screen and strange banjo + electric bass combinations in the game itself are really inventive and fun to listen to.

The gameplay was kind of a bad experience for me, though. Each restart would take a few seconds to boot, and in that time enemies would kill me before I had a chance to see my character. On the runs where I had time to actually play the game, the enemies seemed to move too fast and have too big a hitbox for me to properly avoid them. I would have liked a less of a focus on the enemies and more of a focus on the crumbling floor, as that might have fit the theme better.

Overall, I'd recommend this game for the unique music style. Maybe other players will be luckier or more skilled than me.

Due Process by scottyseus 2018-08-14T22:33:31Z

The game is surprisingly deep and very unique. The gameplay is pretty accessible and the interactions between cellmates have silly backstories that I can appreciate. The recognizable characters was also a fun touch.

Overall, I'd recommend this for the silly concept

Garbage Gods by Inquisit 2018-08-14T19:06:42Z

The art is incredible. As stated in comments before me, it reminds me a lot of the style in Don't Starve in a really good way.

The game itself is an interesting concept, but seems pretty one note. With only two resources to manage, money and garbage flow, the buildings can only vary so much. I think it's a bit of a difficult to put together a more strategic system in the amount of time for a game jam, so props for what does exist already.

Overall, the gameplay is workable and the art is fantastic so I would recommend heartily.

Slime Party by DeoVolente 2018-08-17T23:32:06Z

Interesting concept! I think there's some potential here for a pretty interesting game. I like the drag and drop controls combined with the constant bouncing of the blobs, it makes the game feel very dynamic. However, the balance of blue blobs to red blocks is askew it seems, and as stated before there is a bit of lack of variety. Still, a unique idea that I would recommend playing.

Space Trap by KeyurRana 2018-08-14T19:40:10Z

The biggest detractor for this game, I think, is the decision to make the movement relative to the player's facing direction rather than the world axes. In a game that is essentially a twin stick shooter, the norm is to have wasd move the player in the directions those buttons point at, and there isn't anything gained in changing from that for this game.

Aside from that, the game itself is pretty good. I like the concept, and the art, music, and sound design are all crisp and clean.

All I Got Is A Gun by Pass Me The Controller 2018-08-14T16:38:41Z

I love the core concept so much! I feel like it's a genius idea that is really held back by some poor controls. Having four directional aiming on the orbs but not four directional aiming on attacks is counterintuitive and lead to a very confusing first few minutes. The knockback on attacks to me feels unnecessary, since it takes away control from the player in a demanding game, and the screen shake works well already to create strong feeling attacks.

The art is spooky and simple, particularly the ghosts tentacle attack and the orbs lighting effect when shot.

Overall, the concept is excellent and very fun! Would absolutely recommend.

Choose Them up by Larnin 2018-08-17T23:58:35Z

For a twin stick shooter, the movement and bullet speeds are a little sluggish for my tastes, but certainly playable. The slower movement and bullet speeds did lend themselves more to the asteroids-ish theme the visuals seem to go for. There was plenty of variety of enemies and upgrades, a pretty impressive amount in fact for a game jam. This is the real highlight, I think.

The glowey arcade aesthetic is real cool, and the techno music and laser sounds fit right in.

Overall, I'm really impressed by how polished this game is. The gameplay is solid, and aesthetic sets it apart. Great job!

Outta Space by Coal Creek Game Devs 2018-08-14T19:32:52Z

I'm very impressed by the level of polish on this game. The animation, the background parallax, the sprite work on all the objects, the gui, the sound design, everything was as polished as I would expect out of a fully released game, let alone a game jam game.

The gameplay, however, seemed a bit lacking. Outside of seeing the little blurbs on pickup, the game doesn't offer any intrigue on play. Furthermore, I couldn't purchase things from the shop.

Overall, I'd still recommend playing the game to experience the level of polish it has.

Home by Grogge 2018-08-14T17:39:39Z

The atmosphere is really creepy, it reminds me a lot of Limbo. The minimalist art and sound design really accentuate the things that aren't silence or darkness, specifically the angry red guys and the jingling blue orbs. The concept of high scores unlocking story is icing on the cake, though I didn't really get much out of the story after unlocking three images.

As for the gameplay, I would have liked a slightly faster player and bullet speed, but that may be personal preference. I think as it is, the game is already pretty fun and refreshingly difficult amidst a sea of extremely easy ludum dare games.

Overall, I'd certainly recommend this game for the dark atmosphere and hard as nails gameplay.

LD46 — Keep it alive

HEAL ME PLZ by Pietro Ferrantelli 2020-04-24T01:39:48Z

This game is incredible! The animations and design are amazing, the gameplay is incredibly creative, perfectly intuitive and very fun. It's reeking polish and flavor out of every corner, from the particle effects and blood splatters to the oh so relatable flame from your ungrateful teammate allies. I especially like that the allies are all children in proportion and size compared to you.

I honestly can't think of anything wrong with the game at all

The Storm by NvrSkipGameDay 2020-04-24T00:52:52Z

The artstyle and color palette were both very cool! The gameplay, however, was a bit wanting, unfortunately.

PLANETâ—¯ by Jaun 2020-04-24T00:36:46Z

The game is cute as heck, the animations are smooth and I liked the general concept of gameplay! Unfortunately, most of it was stifled by the difficult controls, as clicking to upgrade towers was a little hard to do, especially while rotating the planet, and rotating the planet felt inconsistent.

Overall, still a good game!

Watchdog by mao 2020-04-26T00:41:15Z

This game is amazing! The concept is genius and is a neat interpretation of the theme that I haven't seen yet. The puzzle mechanics were enticing and fleshed out excellently. To top that all off, the banter tutorial was cute and the circular level design was also pretty neat.

Overall, basically a perfect game holy moly well done

Defendeer by Deozaan 2020-04-24T00:28:20Z

This game is an amazing throwback to the olden day handheld games and nails every single aspect from gameplay to graphics and the audio!

Morose by 100th_Coin 2020-04-26T01:41:54Z

The artstyle was lovely, I liked the colorful plants and characters in contrast to the dark backgrounds.

Gameplay was very ambitious, especially for a compo, but it seemed to work alright

I got stuck trying to make a green plant and I dont know what I missed, but I still thought it was pretty cool.

Keep it alive! by Harry Jacobs 2020-04-26T01:48:11Z

A cute, simple game

The audio really lent a lot of personality to the game, I loved the sound effects and the guy cheering me on! The music was also charming and cute.

Gameplay wise, it was pretty tough but very simple, very intuitive, pretty fun

Keep it Olive! by Nathalia Hohl 2020-04-26T00:00:12Z

I liked the low poly artstyle, the little arsonists were pretty kawaii and the general gameplay was pretty solid.

Overall, it was enjoyable

Agewalker by Tom Robson 2020-04-26T00:56:22Z

I like the throwback to NES style in pretty much everything, artstyle, sound design, zelda esque gameplay. I liked the boss design and the gradual ramp up and addition of ideas, though the ending part of the boss was a little dragged out after I'd killed all the henchman ghosts.

Overall, still a really solid game, well polished and fun to play!

Dying Flame by BauBau 2020-04-24T00:47:59Z

I loved the atmospheric art style and music! Really moody and cool. The writing on the wall and lighting also were really on point. The gameplay itself was nearly nonexistent, however, and it seems like unfortunately the game isn't finished.

Keep "It" alive by LoicLeGrosFrere 2020-04-26T00:19:17Z

This game freaked me out dude. I liked the voice over work and the really creepy music. I'm a little concerned about what kind of people you are to make this game lol

It's About Slime by Silas the Dev 2020-04-24T01:15:24Z

This game is nuts! The graphics, while kind of simplistic, were interesting to look at because of the slime splatter everywhere. The musical moments where new instruments came in was very cool and exciting to experience, but the VSTs were a little grating, unfortunately. I'm a sucker for twin stick shooters with a lot of enemies and this game did hit the spot on that.

Overall, excellent job!

Blobbysitter by Jake Marks 2020-04-26T00:26:13Z

MY BABY BLOB This game is really hard and I am a terrible babysitter.

The voiceover is super cute, the blob is horrifying and evil and suicidal and I love it!

I really liked the overall concept of the game, but there were a lot of things working against it for me. The movement was too slippery, the camera was incredibly sensitive and the objects were really small and hard to click.

Overall, though, I really liked the concept and had a good time playing!

Save the Sun by JProclaimer 2020-04-26T00:06:34Z

The physics was pretty fun to play around in and bumping stuff around was neat-o. I would have really liked to have had more mass or impact on my ship to really bump off those asteroids, but nevertheless the game was pretty fun.

The sound effects were amazing also and I really enjoyed them!

Fighting Footwork by Wolfier 2020-04-26T01:23:31Z

I had no idea what I was doing at first, but once I figured it out I felt like a god. I haven't felt this way since I was a little boy and I love that you have brought this feeling back to me!

Thank you kind stranger

Yellow Flower by codekiw 2020-04-24T01:50:42Z

The art and music were both charming and adorable and I love the concept of picking up bullets to fire! Personal taste, but I found that between managing the beetles, the plant, and the water droplets, I would have preferred that the player controlled a little more tightly with less momentum, since the slippery movement took away from my enjoyment of managing my water.

I also appreciate that the game let me live my quarantine fantasy of hoarding toilet paper

Overall, really solid game!

Deer Quest by Brachistosauro 2020-04-26T01:57:31Z

This game's humor is drier than a bucket of sand sitting in the sun with no water.

This has got to be the strangest soulslike I've ever seen. It's definitely the most unique coat of paint I've seen on a soulslike and I don't know how to feel about it.

Overall, sure okay whatever it was chill I guess

DELIVERATOR: Dual-Wielded Action by Netrunner Nobody 2023-05-02T03:26:35Z

I appreciate the unique take on the delivery theme. The snippet alongside the game story gave me a real hotline miami kind of vibe which was very cool. I think I would have liked faster fire rate and more enemies.

Also the line "Kindly refrain from getting blood on the pizza boxes" goes hard af

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Forbidden Love by abhimonk 2018-04-24T02:29:17Z

This idea is genius! The writing is the real star of the show here. I love the absurdity and the constant joke setups into punchlines that are being created with each dialogue section. There is never a dull moment in the dating portion. My only gripe is that while the genre mesh works well for the initial shock, the dating part goes nuts but the fishing part remains stale. It didn't greatly detract from the game, but didn't add too much to it past the first section. The music was superb and the visuals were on point. I particularly liked the final section.

Overall just an amazing game. I loved it!
