Hey! Seems very interesting. Unfortunately I have a bug, where I can not move anymore after a short while. I tried to debug your code, but could not really figure out why this happens. There are no KeyEvents registered anymore. I made some debug outputs in the keyPressed method. My system is Mac Os with Java 1.8.0. Does anyone else have this issue?

@mar3k Now I felt challenged to find this bug :D.. i think that it is a known java bug with the newest mac os version: https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8167263 .. somehow the keylistener fails to register the keys after pressing a and s several times. no idea why exactly these keys. i did not find a real work around so far. i just use the keys T, G, H and F now :D. I try the game now.

Thanks :D.. we hope the game can be played by try and error. It is dark and you have to find a way out of a dungeon you have fallen into. You can walk, jump and crawl around obstacles. A little tip: Basically you have to go right :D.

Hi @maxwell: Yeah we just did not have enough time for the polishing. If you hear an "ouch" you are not dead, you just ran against an obstacle :D. You can jump over it or crawl under it. @chuchugeralt: In the end the game turned into a story driven walking simulator :). I think it is really hard to die at all. We had story for two other tribes under ground and some of it is already recorded, but there just wasn't enough time for implementing. The harmony game just really starts to make sense when you are walking with at least 2 or 3 other tribes in your party.

@furet thank you, you get our idea. We ran out of time and couldn't get our harmony minigame and the "blind obstacle avoidance" finished. Especially the minigame should have had 4 different melodies, one for each tribe under ground. And then you have to finish and fill in these melodies that get quicker the more disharmony there is. The more companions you have that follow you the more often they get in a fight with each other. On the other hand each companion can sense a different kind of threat, because each tribe is either good in smelling, touch sense, hearing or tasting. :)

Nice game! I had a lot of fun playing it. I like the idea that you have to pass your own turrets at the end. This could lead to new strategic decisions like where to leave a quite weak lane for yourself. Maybe I would force the player to stay on the lanes in the end. I could escape my punishment too easy by walking off the road. Although this is another degree of freedom, I think it is not necessary and the game would be more "planable" for the player, if one has to stay on the road to escape in the end.

Overall a great entry!

The controls and sounds give a really tight feeling. I know how hard it is to get this right and you did it :). It is really fun to play. The fact that enemy bullets block your own bullets gives you a little pressure not just to run away all the time, you must defeat this guys early or you are dead :). Maybe one could have a limited number of nukes (like in super probotector for the snes) so you can kill the whole screen when you messed up. Also the enemies could fire in different shapes like in many bullet hell games. Then it would get more exciting to avoid the bullets. But these are just some proposals for further improvement. Great work!

Hi Bastian! Thanks for your feedback :).. it's always a challenging task to get the balance right ^^.. for me it feels right, but I also like bullet hell games a lot :). I think I will make the game a bit easier, if it is too hard for most guys. The fast moving objects are comets. They are really nearly impossible to dodge, which is why you get a warning system at some point, marking areas of comets coming through :)

@sam-estep yes it is frogger basically :).. we added a dash, bullet time and a comet warning system. the latter one should save you from getting hit by those fast comets to often. The UI is our solution to emphasize that you are in orbits and show that some levels are harder than others because they lead to outer orbits. There could certainly go even more work in the UI ^^.

@ogma There are a lot of good tips there :), thanks! We will probably work on that frustration issue. It is really a hard thing, because I don't want the win handed out to the player to easily. Yesterday I played 6 times and won only 3, but those 3 times my heart was really pumping :D. So I was very frustrated 3 times, but that was already forgotten the second I've beaten this asshole game :). What is not ok is, if you are playing good and getting stopped unfairly. So what I will look into is the amount and speed of comets. If you play good, you should earn enough shield points until you have the warning system though.

Going through water means your torch is wet and gone. There is another way to solve the level. I fixed it so your torch stays off, if its wet. :)

Sorry for the late answer. I'm really busy these days. I totally agree with you all that pacing is one of the biggest problems with this game. I just did not have enough time to even think about a progression system or more balancing.

At one point I had kind of a health bar for the aliens, but for some reason I threw it away.

I was going for a very hard game where you enjoy living a few seconds longer every round and finding new strategies to delay the inevitable. But this concept would have been proposed a bit more to the player 😊. Again, no time. 😁 Also the waves are too much random to compare different runs.

There are extra planets? πŸ˜†

I introduced the cooldowns to engage careful aiming and also to debuff the heavy weapon and the mines. But this was not enough to support using the light gun. A little bit more balancing would have been great.

After I understood what to do it was really fun playing. There are some features, that seem a little unnecessarily complicated. I don't get, why there are two equation options to solve. There is to much going on and no time to think about which option one wants and there is no reward in choosing one over the other. I would just get rid of one and get a simpler straight forward gameplay. The other feature is the rage bar. Again there was not really a time to think about, what to do with it. More time, and more complicated equations would be great. Also there should be a small penalty when leaving an equation unsolved.
