Enjoyed it. It would be cool if the game rewarded you for going fast.

bastian 2018-08-14 15:20

I like the graphics and the sound & music - they fit the style of the game well. But this game is too frustrating for me and I am not much into the gameplay (which is basically frogger, i guess).

I gave it several tries (more than is good for my mood! ;) ), in the end trying to look for some of the perks mentioned in the intro, but even with bullet-time the game is very hard. Every now and then some objects move vertically and very fast, making it nearly impossible to dodge.

To make it work on people like me: More rewards, no unfair vertical enemies and more possibilities to act (maybe you have added them, but also hid them well ;) )

Hi Bastian! Thanks for your feedback :).. it's always a challenging task to get the balance right ^^.. for me it feels right, but I also like bullet hell games a lot :). I think I will make the game a bit easier, if it is too hard for most guys. The fast moving objects are comets. They are really nearly impossible to dodge, which is why you get a warning system at some point, marking areas of comets coming through :)

boyturnedrobot 2018-08-14 17:16

Fun once I figured out the controls. Good work.

sam-estep 2018-08-14 19:39

Pretty fun but as others have pointed out, it's basically just Frogger. The UI felt a little bit clunky; it didn't interfere with my ability to play it though. I wasn't able to reach the end because I kept getting hit by the really high-speed debris. Solid game!

ogma 2018-08-14 23:46

Your nickname doesn't go well with your game since it's well "finished". :p

I didn't catch any bug (Mozilla Firefox), everything went smoothly. The only thing I may have noticed is a big of "lagginess" when you go on the left but it may be just me or the web browser I use.

Even for a no-skill gamer like me the game was playable and quite fun. The red screen as feedback is a good idea and goes well with the concept / setting.

The graphics, musics and sounds are nice.

As others said, some reward for going fast / not getting hit could help the "dynamism" of the game. Maybe a "Try Again" could reduce a bit the frustration?

Anyway, nice job! :)

unfinished 2018-08-15 07:12

@sam-estep yes it is frogger basically :).. we added a dash, bullet time and a comet warning system. the latter one should save you from getting hit by those fast comets to often. The UI is our solution to emphasize that you are in orbits and show that some levels are harder than others because they lead to outer orbits. There could certainly go even more work in the UI ^^.

@ogma There are a lot of good tips there :), thanks! We will probably work on that frustration issue. It is really a hard thing, because I don't want the win handed out to the player to easily. Yesterday I played 6 times and won only 3, but those 3 times my heart was really pumping :D. So I was very frustrated 3 times, but that was already forgotten the second I've beaten this asshole game :). What is not ok is, if you are playing good and getting stopped unfairly. So what I will look into is the amount and speed of comets. If you play good, you should earn enough shield points until you have the warning system though.

Thanks for the feedback again!

ogma 2018-08-16 00:14

@unfinished Thanks and no problem. :)

If you didn't read it, there is a well known and pretty interesting book named [The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3396933-the-art-of-game-design) talking (between other things) about how to "calibrate" Boredom / Frustration / etc, [here's an excerpt](https://books.google.fr/books?id=ePcYCwAAQBAJ&lpg=PA209&ots=jRrUk39Tvc&dq=art%20of%20game%20design%20frustration&hl=fr&pg=PA141#v=onepage&q&f=false).

If you make a v2, don't hesitate to notify, I'll gladly take another shot at it if I have the time. o/

unfinished 2018-08-16 05:20

@ogma funny 😛.. just yesterday I got this book 😝. I‘ll tell you, when I made an update!

walnoot 2018-08-21 12:22

Pretty cool game. I was very motivated to get to the end, but gave up in the end because I got wrecked by the debris moving at light speed too often. Simple mechanics, but well executed and fun to play!

unfinished 2018-08-21 12:51

@walnoot: Thanks for your feedback.. yes, I'm working on a less frustrating version of the game right now :).. i will notify you, when it is published. It also has a lot more changes inside that (hopefully) should be fun.

retallicka 2018-08-22 15:18

This was fun! I am really bad at this kind of game though! I'm actually surprised how well I did. Good mood too ;)

retallicka 2018-08-22 15:19

lol, are those your real team member names?

drums 2018-08-22 20:22

Very difficult, but it felt super smooth. Audio was great. The super fast debris was random and a bit not fair, but all in all it was good!

chadrbanks 2018-08-23 14:11

This felt like a very interesting new take on frogger. The graphics, controls, and audio were on point too! I enjoyed it, nice work.

unfinished 2018-08-23 18:52

@ogma @walnoot @drums @retallicka @bastian I finally finished the post jam version :): https://mrmasterbit.itch.io/roger-the-dodger-postjam-edition

a lot of things were completely reworked. hope you like it ^^

hifructose 2018-08-24 04:11

Fun game. Nice audio and graphics. The gameplay is pretty fun, but there is some rng involved.

bastian 2018-08-24 08:50

I just tried the post-jam version. You did a great job here! Especially the replenishing shields and the possibility to retry after crashing did wonders to the fun and motivation! I like the music.

Using the bomb gives some time to relax and breath and in combination with the bullet time there is really some room for strategy ;)

The information about the powers at the bottom screen are a bit too small and whenever I use the bomb i have even more problems reading them. Maybe you could place them at a more prominent spot and increase its size and/or contrast?

If you manage to fill the world with some more story (e.g. when visiting the other space stations) and maybe add things like the possibility to collect items/resources/scrap and upgrade the ship somehow and altogether increase the game duration (I managed to finish it in about 15 Min) this game will become really fun :)

Thanks for improving and letting me play! :)

meatpudding 2018-08-24 11:25

Pretty cool game. A bit difficult to start (Space is your key to press).

Was fun for a while. I didn't finish it and some of the parts were frustrating... rows moving at the same speed together are tough to get through.

It was challenging though.

Something about the randomness made it a bit repetitive. Maybe some different zones, like an asteroid belt with a slightly different mechanic just so it changes the pacing up a bit.

I can see this as fun for a while and I like that there are different levels.

Good game, thanks for making this!

unfinished 2018-08-24 11:29

@bastian Hi! Thanks for your advise. I want to make the cooldowns more visible (directly at the spaceship) in the next version :). Also I plan to improve the comet warning system some more. After I spent so much time for the rework, I needed to make a cut, though I see possible features and assets everywhere :P.

About the story: Have you read the teletext after each level? Maybe I need to work more on the presentation of the story :)

ursagames 2018-08-31 20:05

Really liked the level selection in this! Interesting to see a story put to the frogger formula. Thanks for sharing your game with my stream awhile back. Your game was played around 4:41 into this vod: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/297885983

unfinished 2018-09-01 06:50

@ursagames Thanks for playing our game :).. this was a very fair test, others might have skipped the quite bulky intro text or after the first game over. There was just so little time :). We already made a post jam version inspired by all the good feedback: https://mrmasterbit.itch.io/roger-the-dodger-postjam-edition
