LD42 — Running out of space

Dish It Out by recursor 2018-08-14T18:58:02Z

How is this real? I have dreamt of such glory but never imagined that it could manifest in the actual world. My unworthiness of witnessing such beauty did end up being reflected in my nonpositive score, but I count myself a better person regardless for having played it.

Snakescape by krasse 2018-08-14T20:49:25Z

This game is awesome! I got stuck after a few puzzles, but the ideas are very interesting. Great controls, fun music, solid art, challenging level design. Neat way to implement the theme!

Upwards by Nitin Kumar 2018-08-14T18:33:09Z

Neat little game! The menu that lets you change your trail was cool. At the beginning I was able to just stay on one side of the screen and press A repeatedly and keep jumping up, but that gets more challenging as the spikes come.

Raiders of the Lost Beer by sawtan 2018-08-14T17:32:01Z

Solid game! The concept is nice and zany, and as other comments have posted, everything is quite tight. I played it a few times and ended up getting to around wave 8.

It doesn't feel super original, but the instadeath on touching lava keeps gameplay interesting. I'm used to bullethell games having a bit more leeway on my own movement so I can focus on the things I'm shooting at, so this is challenging.

The different types of guns are fun; not sure if this is a bug, but sometimes when I have the machine gun it seems like it prevents me from turning for a couple seconds, which causes enemies to spawn faster than I keep up. Otherwise, again, solid!

More enemy types would be fun, as has already been mentioned. Also, random note: I especially like the "Get Psyched!!" font. Not sure why, it just pleases me.

Typewriter by boddiul 2018-08-14T22:01:10Z

Amazing! I love the concept and I love the execution (graphics, animation, controls, etc.). It felt like it started getting laggy over time; at least, the audio started glitching. Is it possible that there are resources that you're building up over time without freeing? Other than that, the only critique I have is difficulty: it felt like it just stayed constant over time, so I was able to just survive indefinitely. It would be neat if the speed or number of enemies or something gradually increased over time.

LEO by Bracula 2018-08-15T03:41:50Z

Very interesting game! I would like to have a way to adjust the camera angle, though.

LEO by Bracula 2018-08-15T13:12:54Z

@tasty-jose Oh sorry! Somehow I missed that part of the description; please disregard my previous comment.

Chroma Jump by crazi456 2018-08-14T22:29:55Z

Cool concept! The controls felt a bit awkward to me, though. Also, I couldn't figure out how to get the second (?) level; it didn't seem like I could jump far enough. Still, a neat idea for a game! Colors are always a solid thing to play around with.

Eye to Eye by Rydough 2018-08-14T21:39:26Z

Neat idea! It's pretty fun to compete to escape the goo. The main problem is the way the controls/physics work: I got stuck in the central pit several times and had no idea how to get out, which made it frustrating to keep playing.

The Void by mortus 2018-08-14T22:42:56Z

Amazing music and art! I definitely agree with the other comments about the speed. The concept is really great, though, and the tutorial brings it together nicely to make it playable. Quite solid!

ROGER THE DODGER by unfinished 2018-08-14T19:39:00Z

Pretty fun but as others have pointed out, it's basically just Frogger. The UI felt a little bit clunky; it didn't interfere with my ability to play it though. I wasn't able to reach the end because I kept getting hit by the really high-speed debris. Solid game!

Baggage Claim by mgoadric 2018-08-15T02:36:14Z

Great execution of an original idea! The game is very tight and focused. I wasn't sure how much room there was for strategy, though: I ended up just waiting as long as possible to get each next bag, because that way I minimize the total number on the screen, and then just have fast reflexes for all the other possible transition opportunities. This game is simple enough that it seems like one should be able to come up with a provably optimal strategy, hmm... Or maybe it's less about that and more just about the reflexes. In any case, I quite liked it!

EVOLUTION by Noa Calice 2018-08-16T12:45:02Z

Amazing game! The weak point was the audio, which was more than made up for by extremely solid visuals and polish.

LegDos by ChaosTheLegend 2018-08-14T18:16:23Z

I love the program names! I didn't really see the importance of the "running out of disk space" mechanic though; if I don't buy any new programs, I don't use any more disk space.Does buying more programs cause me to be able to work better or something? I eventually bought some anyway and then forgot how small my disk was so I lost, lol.

Chinese astronaut by Enot487 2018-08-14T21:02:28Z

Fun little game! I really like the vibe. One thing I noticed is that there's a little gap in the tiling between successive versions of the background.

Too Close by Zayah0_0 2018-08-14T18:47:57Z

Interesting concept; also, the execution was decent considering the limited time you had! The red filling the screen definitely gives it a feeling of claustrophobia.

Sodaboi by Tony Redmer 2018-08-14T18:28:19Z

Nice, fun, compact! The art and music are great, and the concept is original. I didn't find it super engaging though; the limitation on the fire rate for my cannon, combined with the uniformity of wiping bubbles off the screen, gave it little replay value for me personally.

Personal Space by Hannah19 2018-08-14T19:44:35Z

Interesting idea! I wasn't able to reach midnight; the controls frustrated me a lot. I would be interested to see an implementation of the same idea with different controls.

The Coming of the Great Colorful Handkerchief by mosaic 2018-08-14T21:33:26Z

This game is solid in pretty much all aspects. The music feel pretty repetitive though; it doesn't really make me feel hyped to prevent the end of the universe. However, the controls feel great, the upgrades you can buy are fun, and the growing/shrinking mechanic with the core crystals looks really really good. Possibly the best I've played so far for LD42!

Ramboom by Holy 2018-08-14T19:15:07Z

Awesome little game! The art and music are both very impressive. I wasn't sure what was up with the edge of the game and the dynamite; I assume that the area was shrinking? Not much gameplay but it was quite enjoyable.

Plant's Conquest by Sam Estep 2018-08-14T17:33:58Z

@max6333 Thanks! Were you able to get the toolbar to show up by eating one of the bean plants? If you drag an item from the toolbar, it should cause little sparkles to appear that show you where you can use it.

Plant's Conquest by Sam Estep 2018-08-14T17:36:47Z

@deadeyejoe02 Thanks for taking a look! On any of the levels, it should highlight any things in the environment that you can use when you mouse over them. I probably should have made the highlighting brighter (or a different color?) on the second level, or added some other indicator...

Plant's Conquest by Sam Estep 2018-08-14T17:43:54Z

@chaosthelegend Definitely agree; we originally intended there to be more mechanics, but quickly got bogged down by the time it took to draw stuff. Next Ludum Dare we'll definitely focus more on gameplay!

Plant's Conquest by Sam Estep 2018-08-14T19:00:35Z

@frittatenbank Heh, if you insist! Ezra is putting together a Bandcamp page right now. The music is also available [on GitHub](https://github.com/gameless/ludumdare42/tree/d1af5f9d4745919762673a2bd004837967dd4108/app/assets/Audio).

@holy You're totally good! I couldn't figure out how to delete posts either; definitely a feature they should add to this website.

Plant's Conquest by Sam Estep 2018-08-15T02:59:39Z

@jerripo Yeah, we mostly just ran out of time... there was a lot more we had hoped to do for sure, but we didn't know how short 72 hours was. Not sure if we'll work more on this particular game, but looking forward to LD43!

Plant's Conquest by Sam Estep 2018-08-15T13:14:50Z

@hyprgloo Thanks so much! Yeah the dynamic soundtrack is the only part of my contribution to this game that I'm actually proud of, haha. Laura and Ezra did an awesome job with the art/sound for sure. :)

Plant's Conquest by Sam Estep 2018-08-16T19:29:17Z

@loonydrope Thanks for coming back to it! I'll definitely keep understandability of controls in mind more in the future.

Step into the Void (Web) by Bilzc10 2018-08-15T03:45:46Z

Fairly decent game; felt pretty simplistic though. I was a bit confused to read the description about the food industry and then play a game about disappearing tiles, heh. One thing I noticed is that the music seems to keep cutting out repeatedly; it was playing like half the time, and it would say my tab was muted, but when I tried to unmute it, it would just play the victory sound and then mute again.

Grave Heart by very dark lord 2018-08-15T02:06:41Z

This is so, so impressive! I couldn't figure out how to survive past day 8; I was very quickly overwhelmed. Not sure what to recommend as feedback, really; keep up the awesome work!

Inventory Quest by acfaruk 2018-08-15T02:57:38Z

Neat idea! I like how you made it a memory game by only showing the values on mouseover. I did find it frustrating that there was a limitation on how fast you could throw things away, though; it made it feel less like a game of speed and memory and more like just a wait for impending doom.

grindatron.tv by Donitz 2018-08-14T18:03:03Z

Very cool! I wasn't expecting to see AI in Ludum Dare; I'll have to check out your code to see how you did it. In the earlier levels it mostly just feels like a search for the platform that disappears last followed by standing on some AI's head, but later it becomes a solid platformer. I lost interest in continuing after a bit due to the controls; they're pretty good, but more polishing would be nice to make doing the later levels more fun.

grindatron.tv by Donitz 2018-08-14T18:18:50Z

@donitz Yeah it was interesting! Sometimes I would feel safe and then they would spazz and I would die. I didn't hear the "talking", though; maybe I just wasn't listening for it.

stROLL by jerripo 2018-08-15T03:54:25Z

Super spazzy! It was enjoyable just watching the little guy jump around. Alas, I ended up getting stuck on the blue level because of said spazziness. I did find it a bit frustrating that making a mistake could cause one to have to go back and replay all the levels leading up to that point, just because you can't always predict what's a mistake and what's not.

Color Space by Sekwah41 2018-08-14T22:09:22Z

Super creative! I really like the ways that different/same colors interact with each other; makes for an interesting mechanic. I couldn't tell how much room there was for strategy, though; I tried lining up my shots for multiple enemies of the same type, but I couldn't tell how much I could do about the encroaching boundaries. Very well executed game!

Blast Off! by heidelbert 2018-08-14T19:58:11Z

Very interesting idea! The graphics are impressive; they slowed down my laptop a lot though. I was very confused by the UI and wasn't sure what I was doing for a while. Like others pointed out, I haven't seen a lot of tower defense games that allow the enemies to attack the towers in a one-dimensional style. The main thing I'd say needs improvement is the UI; with the intense visuals, it's important for people to know what they're doing.
