LD46 — Keep it alive

Knyttskogen by Jordgubben 2020-05-10T11:19:05Z

Initially it reminded me of A Dark Room, which is a game I really love playing. However, it kind of never took off. I'm not a huge fan of games that are as relaxed as this, but this one seems to be well made! Adding a couple more events that happen, and making the text scrollable, would improve the game overall. Stoking the fire also felt a little unbalanced, but not by much. The atmosphere in the game was fantastic, and this is a really good submission

Emergency Call by rootools 2020-05-12T16:22:57Z

A great looking game with an interesting mechanic, I'm impressed you managed to make this in a weekend. Although I do understand it's meant to be difficult, I think there is fun difficulty and annoying difficulty. This tends to veer into the latter, but not through lack of effort on your part. The controls are too clunky and unresponsive to play it for a long time; even once I started to get the hang of it, I just couldn't shift the gear far enough down presumably because the camera wouldn't look further down. The steering was also very off kilter, e.g I would be turning left and it would start going right (I assume because of the left hand pulling it away, but I'm not sure). This may have been a bit too ambitious for the time limit, although you were very close to nailing it! Ignoring the unintentionally funky controls, you have some well implemented functionality. On a side note, I would recommend tying esc to quitting the game, it just makes the whole experience more player friendly. A genuinely fantastic effort, I hope you keep going with it

Wreckless Survivor by Danilo Bezerra 2020-05-10T11:33:23Z

A neat game with an interesting mechanic, and really well implemented given the time available. I do feel it's a little unbalanced; the health moves down too quickly and the health increases too little to make it worth going after anything but the shortest path. As some others have said, either increasing player speed or only reducing the health when the player starts moving would make it a bit easier to play through. Really good submission!

I am the mason, i didn't get payment for 3 days, i'm hungry by 55_maximus_55 2020-05-12T14:56:11Z

Not really sure what to expect from this game. It was well put together, but I don't really understand what the point was, it seemed more like some surreal interactive fiction than an actual game. Certainly has potential though!

Keep It Alive For 100s by royur 2020-05-02T11:25:14Z

I really liked your idea of using rag-doll physics as a mechanic, it's quite an interesting one. However, in such a confined place it may not be suitable. Toning down the force applied to the character, or creating a larger space, would give the player more control and make it a game that is more skilful. Although you can sort of control the character, it requires so much effort to keep them alive it stops being fun after a while. This is especially the case when you find out you can just hold the character in place by holding down the mouse button. Also, although interesting, having different areas of the body have separate health stats is a little confusing, especially as it takes up so much space. With more polish and a look at the overall balance of the game, you have a solid idea here

Keep It Alive by riwmd 2020-05-10T12:05:42Z

An interesting idea, it's a shame you couldn't finish it on time! I'm not too sure where the keep it alive theme comes in here, other than just using the name for the shop; there doesn't seem to be any time limit to serving customers, or real indication of how to serve them. Making what to do more obvious would have helped, as pressing the arrow button isn't very intuitive. I did really like the art style. Hopefully you'll be able to finish this some time :)

Cat Kingdom by Quix 2020-05-12T14:44:05Z

It's a neat idea but it was very difficult to get the hang of it, even with your instructions on this page. I would recommend adding a tutorial page in the game too for quick reference. It was also pretty buggy, with enemies getting stuck at the start, and pressing on things didn't really have an effect. I think next time you should go with a smaller scale game so you have time to properly bug test. I really liked the art though, and your story is pretty cute

Spirit of the Tree by sat9 2020-05-10T14:03:36Z

The game looks and sounds really good, you did a fantastic job on the art and music! I liked the concept as well, and you matched the atmosphere to it perfectly. The gameplay needs a bit of work, though. The enemies didn't seem particularly effective, and I couldn't really tell what kind of damage they or I were dealing. Their spawning was also very erratic, with either too many or too few appearing. Adding player feedback and improving the balance a little would go a long way to making this a much more fun game. I really hope you develop this some more, it has a lot of potential!

Brainstorm by Shakedimus 2020-05-02T11:52:39Z

A really neat idea that's quite different to a lot of the games submitted for the theme. I love word association games so I was hopeful for this, but it was difficult to get to grips with. Using the left and right mouse buttons to select was a little counter intuitive, it would have been a lot smoother if it was just one button. I also don't understand why there were three different components to take care of, i.e time, score and health. Dealing with health when there is quite a short time limit is overkill, especially because it seems quite arbitrary when health will be deducted. The biggest issue for me was probably in the word association itself, as I couldn't for the life of me figure out what words matched up. For example, it looked like cat and lick didn't score any points, but eat and girl did, which makes no sense. It could also be quite difficult to match words at times due to the connectors; when shot, they would just latch on to the first word in the way which made it very difficult to get far off words. Overall, I think this was a good effort especially in the time limit, and with some more work and polish put into it I would love to play it again.

CHARGER! by Symphonia 2020-05-10T12:19:21Z

Well done for submitting something! I liked the humorous messages, and it fit very well with the theme. I didn't feel there was a lot of gameplay, it was very much just a game of luck with no skill involved even if the location was random. Maybe if you were to further improve it, you could turn it into a literal hunt for the charger, e.g there are different clues leading you on a treasure hunt for it

The Dragonsitter by JoeShanahan 2020-04-26T15:35:07Z

This was a great little idea! I really liked that you could name the dragon, and that you had a small tutorial too. It's definitely a fun game with a great atmosphere, and it has a lot of potential. The different mechanics were easy enough to grasp and complemented each other very well. There are a couple of improvements that could be made, though. Using the mouse only to scroll was a little awkward, as I instinctively wanted to use the mouse button to interact/use objects but instead had to keep going back to the spacebar. I also think the balance was a little off, as I found it very easy to keep the dragon alive. This might have been because I didn't play past day 4; although I was enjoying it I kind of ran out of things to do very quickly. It would have been nice to pause it as well, as time moves quite quickly. I think if you had reduced the amount of mechanics you decided to include for the gamejam, you could have created a smaller but more complete game. It's definitely one I would play the heck out of if you finish it though

Protect the NHS by Anuradha 2020-04-26T15:21:30Z

@tigercoder11 Thanks a lot!

Protect the NHS by Anuradha 2020-04-26T15:22:53Z

@joeshanahan @pillitoka thanks for playing :) The game was a bit more ambitious than we had initially thought, so unfortunately the balance is quite off. It started off too easy but then we made it too hard lol, definitely something to take into account for the future!

Protect the NHS by Anuradha 2020-05-02T11:26:48Z

@royur the cost of the tower is on the right hand side, under the buttons. We definitely should have included a menu showing the tower stats though, thanks for the feedback

Protect the NHS by Anuradha 2020-05-12T20:10:40Z

@danilo-bezerra Thanks for your feedback! Not too sure why the UI doesn't scale correctly when in the browser, but if you make it full screen it should scale just fine

Defend The Crystal by Da1amus 2020-05-12T16:36:24Z

I really enjoyed the look of this game, and I thought you used colour and the particles fantastically. A very simple concept as well, although a little controls screen would be nice. As stated by others, the attack is a bit misleading; we're trained by the majority of games to see little shooty things as the object that deals the damage (e.g bullets or the visualisation of a spell), so it did seem that the little particles would be doing the actual damage. I would recommend either having a weapon swinging/stabbing to show where the hit will land, having the particles themselves deal damage on impact, or emitting the particles in a straight line to indicate where the hit is. There are also way too many enemies; either reduce the number or make them one hit kills. A fantastic submission, I hope you polish it up and make it into a full game!

Tree Tender LD46 by AmbaDev 2020-05-01T15:42:12Z

A really cute idea that suits the theme very well! The core mechanic is simple to grasp which makes it easy to jump right in. However, I felt that the game lacked any kind of progression or incentive to work harder. The tree's health declined at a slow enough rate that it was fairly easy to prop back up. I also think there may have been a bug with the shooting, as it didn't kill the skulls and sometimes went straight through them, although the skulls themselves didn't seem to do anything so it may not have been necessary to shoot at all. A good start, but definitely needs some improvement.

Mother Of Dragon by ceriseghost 2020-05-12T13:57:40Z

A really neat game, and I liked the art style! I think the balance could have done with some tweaking, either increasing the speed of the player or the damage done. Due to the random nature of the enemy spawning, sometimes it was easy to become overrun by the number of enemies. I did also find a bug, which is after you die you can't then rotate around to shoot at things, you're stuck facing in one direction. Overall, great effort

V.I.P by Skvader_418 2020-04-28T23:37:39Z

This was a really good take on the theme, and your interesting twist was fantastic! Using a bouncing bullet was very innovative and made the game a lot more about problem solving than just standard shooting your way out. It was easy to grasp, and I really appreciated the tutorial. A couple things to improve on. It was very useful having a little arrow showing which way to go during the tutorial, and I felt something similar should have been included in the main levels just to mark the exit even if it's just a different coloured set of stairs. The VIP needs some more work; making them move like a bouncing bullet seemed a little weird, and made it very difficult to point them in the right direction when making them move somewhere. Due to the distance that they would follow the player, it also sometimes made it seem like they weren't following at all. Because of the irregularity of the VIP movement I did have to give up eventually as at one point I just could not get them to move through a door. Having a greater variety of enemies would also make the game more interesting, as it was fairly static and easy to get through. Overall a great idea and a fun little game

Until Darkness by Katrin 2020-05-12T15:09:11Z

A cute game, and I really liked the atmosphere. I wasn't really sure what was happening, or what the goal was. Some more player feedback would be nice, as well as some indication of what is going on. I didn't really understand what the point was, but it was a really good effort for your time doing it all yourself! Next time I would suggest going with something a bit smaller, so you can focus more on creating a complete game.

Big Brain Simulator by desces 2020-05-10T12:51:09Z

This was fantastic, especially for something made over a weekend. I enjoyed the basic mechanic, and I thought the environment was really well done. There are a couple of improvements to make, though, the main one being the camera. Although for the most part it functions correctly, at times it was really difficult to orient myself and figure out how to manoeuvre so that the camera was pointed in the direction I wanted. Given that the brain seems to turn on a point, which does make it more difficult to navigate, using the mouse to direct the camera would make it a lot easier to see what's happening while not decreasing the difficulty of controlling the brain. If not that, being able to reverse would be useful. The respawning mechanic is good, but needs some tweaking. I found that I would frequently get hurt again for the same reason as before (sometimes because I was dumb, but frequently because the pigeon was in the same place as last time) but would be unable to heal because I'd used the blood bags already. Finally, it was a little weird that the pigeon could walk through some of the obstacles and would literally chase me all over. I would recommend limiting it to a certain area. Overall, a great and fun game that I would definitely play more if you fleshed it out, really impressive!

Do Starve by distributive 2020-05-12T16:11:43Z

A cool looking game! The player is a little slow, and it was sometimes difficult to figure out what to do. The thought bubbles were a really nice touch though. I hope you manage to expand on this, it's a very neat idea.

Rumble in the Bronchs by ballipilla 2020-04-26T16:07:21Z

This was fun to play, you made a really good effort. The art style was cohesive, in part due to its simplicity, and made the game look enjoyable. Super simple idea that was easy to grasp but maybe too easy to master. As others have said, I think increasing difficulty as you go would encourage people to play for longer as there would be an increase in skill required. I also don't think the player should start off moving as I found it a bit difficult on the first run to figure out what was going on and stop myself from going head first into a wall. The controls were a little too heavy for me; I do get you were going for similar movement to a car but it wasn't very easy to use to begin with. Overall though, you've made a solid game that was fun to play, I really enjoyed it!

No Return by squareoctopus 2020-05-12T15:37:17Z

It's a really interesting idea with a lot of potential. I enjoyed it up to a point, but I feel there should have been more propeller collectables available given the wideness of the space to move in. It was also a little buggy; sometimes the distance indicators would stay on screen with the same number showing. They were very useful when they worked though! A really good game, I enjoyed it a lot. I hope you finish it :)

Base Protector by TigerCoder11 2020-04-26T15:07:59Z

This looks like it could be a good start to a game, but unfortunately I wasn't able to get the start button to work so couldn't actually play it..

Mr. Cheesy by SAVVU 2020-05-01T16:35:57Z

Original and fun concept, and I thought your audio and art suited it really well. Solid gameplay too, with sharp movement and an intuitive goal. The collisions seemed a little off; sometimes the cheese would lose health even when I was sure I'd cleared the grater. The balance could have been a bit better too, as it started off very slow and easy, but even when the speed increased the difficulty didn't. Being instakilled by the mouse after hitting an obstacle twice in a row also seemed a little unfair given how easy it was to avoid obstacles. Awesome effort though, a bit of improvement and it'll be super addictive :)

Evolve by Ecrush11989 2020-05-12T15:45:03Z

It's a good start, but it was very hard to understand. It also seemed a little buggy, and visually it was unappealing. A better layout with even a little bit more effort put into the colour, font and spacing would go a long way. I didn't really get what was supposed to happen, or how to improve. It also didn't look like you had a lot of time for testing, e.g you could assign more than the given evolution points at the start. Well done for submitting something in time, in many ways that's the hardest thing about a game jam, but this definitely needs some more work. I would recommend going with a game smaller in size next time, to make it easier to manange.

CAT KEEPS YOUR NIGHTMARES OUT by Mantarus 2020-05-12T16:29:08Z

A really cute game, I absolutely love the idea. It seems to be very well implemented, minus one major flaw that most others have pointed out; attacking is too difficult to do without getting hit at the same time. Increasing the radius of the paw, or just making sure it's ahead of the cat's head so it doesn't get in the way, would solve this. The gameplay itself is decent for a game jam as well, although I imagine it would get dull if the player could actually kill the nightmares because there doesn't seem to be a lot of variation. This has a lot of potential, good work!

Toasted Dreams by HakunaSoft 2020-05-12T15:19:35Z

The art is really cute, I loved it! The concept is also very simple and easy to grasp. It was a little boring though, maybe adding some collectables or varying the obstacles would make it more interesting. I would also add more space between the obstacles too, moving from the top row to the bottom without getting damaged was sometimes nearly impossible. A good effort :)

The Adventure of Mr. Bubbles by DreadedDruidStudios 2020-05-12T14:34:26Z

A really good effort, and I liked the overall feel of it. With some improvement it would be a neat little game. Unfortunately, the level design felt a bit off, as if sometimes you were adding an extra step to move to another platform with no real reason other than to make it a little bit longer, not to increase the skill required to play. I also feel there were too many things to keep track of, what with the water level, time limit, fish food and extra bits. It isn't clear which is the one to be prioritising. I would recommend removing the time limit and having the water level reduce only when the player is moving. This would prevent the player from just running all around the level, and instead pay attention to their actions (a bit of strategy to go on top of the platformer). Awesome game for a compo submission

LD50 — Delay the inevitable

Walk of life by ThePhennix 2022-04-09T11:03:13Z

A really cool idea and I like how many mechanics you managed to fit in with the different mini games. Sometimes they could be very frustrating for the wrong reason though, mostly due to either being unbalanced (understandable for a jam) or not working as well as intended (like items not being dragged correctly). I liked the art style and humour, overall greta submission

SpaceShifting: Deady or Not by Anuradha 2022-04-09T11:07:13Z

@neon-orbis You're right, the enemy spawning definitely needs to be sped up. We tried to make it slower so the player doesn't get too overwhelmed, but I guess we made it too slow! Thanks for your feedback

SpaceShifting: Deady or Not by Anuradha 2022-04-09T12:07:51Z

@unfinished The enemy behaviour definitely needs to be improved, thanks for your input

SpaceShifting: Deady or Not by Anuradha 2022-04-09T12:09:39Z

@slecornu I thought we'd fixed the issue with the raycast not aligning, thanks for bringing that up we'll look into it! The enemies were supposed to be more threatening due to the overwhelming number, but it seems the slow spawning accidentally negated that oops. Thanks for your feedback

SpaceShifting: Deady or Not by Anuradha 2022-04-09T12:16:24Z

@joselor Thanks for taking the time to write such detailed feedback  We were going more for a "disease that spreads" kind of enemy spawn which is why they all spawn together, with the occasional random spawn elsewhere in the ship, but it looks like it didn't have the intended affect of overwhelming the player (probably because of the slow spawn rate like you mentioned). Your suggestions are very helpful, we'll definitely be taking them on board

Mystery Bomb by morcado 2022-04-09T11:30:07Z

A compact game, quite short and straightforward but very well put together. I liked the red herrings but unfortunately as there were so few things to do I didn't catch them until my second play! Great artstyle and I'm loving the vibe, great job

LeapSheep by joselor 2022-04-09T11:59:06Z

I loved your concept and it was great fun once I got the hang of it. I enjoyed the speed of the game but because I kept hitting walls (and then rolling all the way back) there were some very frustrating and slow sections. The rolling back is a good idea for a penalty, but I thought it was implemented too harshly as it frequently meant insta death. It honestly made it a bit too frustrating as sometimes it felt like I was being punished for the level design/game mechanic rather than my own skill. With a bit of tweaking it would really add to the sense of urgency as I would need to make up for lost time instead of give up in frustration. The ending of each level was awesome and I liked the style and narration too. Pretty much the only things to improve were the severity of the hit-a-wall penalty, and maybe adding a key to restart the game instead of having to use the mouse to click a button. Overall, great submission!

Streets of the Dead by Neon Orbis 2022-04-09T10:54:05Z

Pretty good concept. I found it hard to understand what to do initially but eventually I got the hang of it and it turned out to be quite fun. Definitely impressive how much you managed to put together in 3 days!
