Nice work!

fresh-avocado 2020-04-21 00:33

That game is cool.

mhykah 2020-04-21 00:34

Fun game! I like the art, music, and sound effects. Good job!

I found that you can shoot lasers in the pause screen. I got a time of 1:32 without cheating!

devparty 2020-04-21 00:34

This is an amazing game. Great Job!

salmonmeagar 2020-04-21 00:35

Rather rough aesthetically, but plays well and is very on the nose. I especially appreciate that I have influence over the dinosaurs - I've had enough of these games where my object of interest just stands there waiting to be pummeled.

turtleflyte 2020-04-21 00:36

Very fun! But there is little room for error.

marccspro 2020-04-21 00:36

Very nice game !! I like the fact that it trains your mouse pointing skills haha Great job !

mat-mox 2020-04-21 00:37

Amazing, i'd like to have that when chrome has no internet ;)

pedrorocha 2020-04-21 00:38

Good job, I loved playing this one. The idea of reproduction was brilliant.

boltkey 2020-04-21 00:38

Lovely theme interpretation. I suck at those clicky games, got 1:39 and never was really able to get that exponential growth of the population, (perhaps eventually with one mega asteroid wiping up the whoe population, which would be a game win) which would have been nice.

It took me a while to realize I can click the dinosaurs to change their direction, which changed everything. I kept them all near the side of the screen, but eventually one single fast big asteroid wiped them all up.

topolino 2020-04-21 00:38

Fun little game, great job!

witdarkstar 2020-04-21 00:38

This was great! Super simple and effective. Great used of the theme here. This was a fun little game.

natethegreat 2020-04-21 00:38

Cool concept, and good combination of music and art! The one thing I had trouble with was that the difficulty varies a lot from game to game. For instance in some games I would get some very fast moving asteroids that hit them in the first few asteroids but other times I was waiting for quite a while before the fast asteroids started coming.

pyrotrap 2020-04-21 00:38

This game is pretty fun. I made it 1 minute and a half and then a fast meteor wiped out all my female dinosaurs which just so happened to be clumped up

nanoarch 2020-04-21 00:41

I like it a lot, especially the graphics.

sacredbacon 2020-04-21 00:42

Interesting game play, very fun. I liked the sound effects and backtrack. Found it very difficult until I realized you can destroy meteors while paused. Great Job!

chrissimas 2020-04-21 00:43

Simple, beautiful and very fun to play! :)

kynantokoro 2020-04-21 00:43

I always wanted to know how dinosaurs made babies. thanks! also, very cool music.

emperor-eagle 2020-04-21 00:44

Fun game! The dinosaurs mating and increasing in population is a great idea. The game is well polished and has great visuals. I really enjoyed playing it!

bassguitarbill 2020-04-21 00:45

Interesting game. Really unforgiving, but pretty fun.

petrifiedapple 2020-04-21 00:45

Cute little game, keep it up!

huddybuddygreatness 2020-04-21 00:51

I love the background so much! I need to learn how to do pixel art, and just art in general...

giraffesareburning 2020-04-21 00:53

A smooth game with a neat, finished look. Pretty fun, and the population growth mechanism is a fun twist on a game like this.

bonyok77 2020-04-21 08:30

Whoa, what a wonderful pixel art style...

redfenix 2020-04-21 08:57

great idea

pechedodue 2020-04-21 11:39

I could'nt survive longer than 1min42, it's so hard! It was really fun to play, good job!!

jamesolivermusic 2020-04-21 17:54

nice take on the theme. it certainly gets challenging quickly! the graphics are very nice. there could be a lot more variety with the FX, especially the clicking one which gets repetitive very quickly. Great job overall!

nek 2020-04-22 10:15

Very nice style and fun game but for me at least got very hard very quick.

rongefilet 2020-04-22 13:06

From "Oh wow easy" to "THIS IS HELL" real fast. It feels the "turn back dinos" mechanic is a little redundant, I was too focused en getting rid of asteroids to manage them. But I had a lot of fun, it's tense enough and those adorable creatures make me want to protect them, very cool entry, great work!

juice-lizard 2020-04-22 13:10

Funny that the dinos make babies.

marcusnystrand 2020-04-22 13:16

@rongefilet hehe I totally agree. I was planning on adding a shop feature where you could buy protection such as trees. Them maybe managing dinos would have made more sense. But I had no time. Anyway glad you liked it, thank you for your comment!

marcusnystrand 2020-04-22 13:16

@jamesolivermusic I agree, thank you for your feedback!

marcusnystrand 2020-04-22 13:18

@natethegreat yeah you're right, I would have needed more time to balance it :) It sure gets too difficult around 1:30

marcusnystrand 2020-04-22 13:19

@boltkey Haha same thing happened to me. I realized I could just keep them at the side of the screen but shortly after got wiped out in one hit. Thank you for sharing!

sabeurre 2020-04-22 15:59

Nice game to play, a bit hard I would say, but still a nice one. Really liked the music here

marcusnystrand 2020-04-22 16:05

@sabeurre Thank you, the music was made in like 5 minutes and I was afraid it would just be annoying.. But Im glad you liked it :)

laurari 2020-04-22 17:34

Really in love of the way that dinos have to make babies xD I like the game, and I think the pause is super helpful to move yourself quickly!!

jk5000 2020-04-23 10:03

This is a super simple and very interesting little game. I love graphics and music is okay. This is overall a very well made jam game. Well done.

paologinefra 2020-04-23 11:00

Nice idea and implementation

sztrovacsek 2020-04-23 13:22

I just had a baby dino and then it was killed instantly... This game is harder than it looks  Cool concept tho, I like the graphics and sound effects. Good job!

marcusnystrand 2020-04-23 14:38

@sztrovacsek I'm sorry for your poor dino baby :( Yes haha I think I made it too hard

whatnamegames 2020-04-23 15:58

Pretty cute game, I like the dino's : )

g12345 2020-04-23 20:43

Nice little game! I really like the reproduction animation! Some of the meteors are really quick and hard to click too.

rexagon 2020-04-24 08:59

Haha, cool idea. And graphics. And sound when you loose)

duke 2020-04-24 11:05

yeah, why not. Nice implementation of the theme. Played a few others with related game play ideas. The art was nice, but backgrounds, comets and dinosaurs did clash a little in regards of their style. The song was surprisingly catchy and upbeat. Felt really authentic.

The destruction of the comets felt a little unresponsive or off. I wasnt'r really sure where the hitbox was, so I always aimed a little down. Still, the feedback could be better and more satisfying. Maybe adding a slight camera shake, more sounds effects and better shooting graphics would help.

all in all, a nice little shooter.

amazura 2020-04-24 11:58

poor dino, i can't save you all, even your fate is extinction

2020-04-24 12:20

Great game! Love the art! Very intuitive and fun! I wish the game started out with more dinosaurs. Very strong game entry. Great job, and keep it up!

marcusnystrand 2020-04-24 12:56

@duke thanks for the feedback, camera shake is a great idea!! Didn't think about that

robowarrior1982 2020-04-24 16:40

It's good little arcade game, and i like the idea that the dinosaurs made baby's,its so cute and fun !

marcusnystrand 2020-04-24 16:53

My friend just got a time of 2:56. I can't believe it, I can't seem to go beyond 2:00

unknown.png

hegemege 2020-04-24 17:05

Small and simple, the only addition I would have made is an audio effect when your clicks are hitting the asteroids, and maybe some particle effects when they are destroyed. Otherwise audio was fine, really liked the font and simplistic design :)

basileios 2020-04-24 17:06

very nice and fun!

marcusnystrand 2020-04-24 17:38

@hegemege Thanks for your feedback!! I agree, there should be a sound effect when asteroids are successfully hit. Nice idea, thank you!

hexa3 2020-04-24 19:56

Very cute game. Cool art and music!

thedeadlybutter 2020-04-24 20:03

This was a lot of fun!

izokia 2020-04-24 23:11

A very simple game that played very well. My only complaint that it gets pretty difficult very fast (maybe my mouse skills suck IDK). The theme was cute and the art matches it pretty well. Great submission.

qyouk 2020-04-24 23:53

Challenging and nice looking game. I like the fact that the number of dinos is increasing so it let more room for error as the game becomes harder. Clever! Nice work!

slothtimistic 2020-04-25 00:29

Lovely game, love all the dithering, had a laugh at the shagging dinos

splitpainter 2020-04-25 09:09

Fun and original take on the save the dinos concept. Initially reminded me of Dino Run 2 by Pixeljam, but then the added laser made it original.

fabula-rasa 2020-04-25 10:42

I had a good laugh about the concept and I think you executed it well. It's definitely not my cup of tea (not really a fan of games where you just click around, no matter how cute the dinos are ;)). But I did not encounter any bugs or strange behavior - the game is well-polished! So, good job!

marcusnystrand 2020-04-25 13:27

@fabula-rasa thanks!

ryzy27 2020-04-25 14:38

Cool game. Starts pretty easy, but there is no way I can go above 2 mins :)

Art looks great. You have added a nice touch with dinos reproducing.

Cheers!

joamd 2020-04-25 14:41

Intense gameplay! Wow; I couldnt go beyond 1:20 xD Cute animations and sounds :muscle:

madalaski 2020-04-25 15:28

Cute, punishing and very on theme. A worthy entry to the jam!

marcusnystrand 2020-04-25 15:29

@ryzy27 @joamd Thanks, I appreciate your comments :)

marcusnystrand 2020-04-25 15:30

@madalaski Thank you!!

kate90 2020-04-25 17:30

I like it! Really good art, really good audio, gameplay keeps focused. Well done!

nathant 2020-04-25 17:32

I love missile command style games! Really appreciated having a pause button at the top left. Art was clean and read nicely. Would suggest a some sort of feedback (shake, animation, etc) for the large meteors when taking damage. Also could add a source of where you are shooting from. Otherwise, fun jam good job!

marcusnystrand 2020-04-25 18:13

@nathant Nice ideas, I agree. Thank you for your feedback!

mika-la-grand 2020-04-25 21:58

It starts off pretty easy, but then becomes very hard. The best I managed was 1:14. I like how there are multiple sizes of meteorite. Though, I noticed that you also get a game over when there is no chance to reproduce; which isn't fair. I think you should only get a game over if there are no dino's left. Overall quite fun, but maybe you can make the difficulty curve a bit smoother.

marcusnystrand 2020-04-25 23:00

@mika-la-grand Thanks for your comment! I agree the difficulty curve should be much smoother! I will change it as soon as the jam is over :)

lairinlair 2020-04-26 00:00

Cute art and very fun gameplay. Found the music distracting but really liked the sound effects. Great work

johnnysix 2020-04-26 00:21

Wow, it gets serious after about 40 seconds. Cool Concept.

nachodlv 2020-04-26 02:10

The difficulty scale up nicely, it gets you concentrated in the game. I like the background and art style. Nice game!

trigueiro 2020-04-26 02:37

Wow! It really gripping! One moment I am all calm and the next one it is all chaotic. I very much enjoyed the 'matting' element idea to give more 'lives'. One suggestion would be to add an animation or at least a sprite change on the bigger meteors. For a moment I though it was bugged and could that the big meteors could not be broken. Another suggestion would be to have a "area of effect" marker for the clicking radius (don't know if I am explaining myself well :\ )

robert-li 2020-04-26 06:09

I liked how I could control the dinos too. However, it gets hard real quick. It is quite addicting since I keep on playing to see if I can stay alive longer

amerigo-gazaway 2020-04-26 07:04

Great use of theme, I was hoping someone would make a game about dinos. Nice work!

gimblll 2020-04-26 12:20

The dino genepool is not going to be very viable with that strategy! :) Good work!

n-feofentov 2020-04-26 13:59

Hey! We've played your game on the stream: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/603233104 Good luck!

antti-haavikko 2020-04-26 14:08

Brilliant idea to make the dinos breed! I've been toying around quite a lot with genetic algorithms over the years but still never used one in a game. Haven't come up with a clever game that could use one yet. Well sure, I'm guessing that the algorithm here is "fairly" simple (ie. just male or female randomly) but breeding nonetheless.

The pixel art was good, the dino really reminds me of the chrome "no internet" game dino but just more detailed and with colors. Really lion kingish color scheme, I dig it! The particle effects and sound were kinda bland though. It was nice that the asteroid click area was very generous. So many people do exact pixel perfect colliders and hit checks without understanding the fact that those make stuff seem unfair.

The bigger asteroids requiring multiple clicks was bit of a curveball. And because you didn't give any feedback about the clicks, it kinda felt like a bug. Maybe a better idea would be split the asteroid to two smaller ones on click and they could move diagonal. Another things that seem more like a bug instead of a feature was the trees blocking the asteroids. I think the trees should do some kind of a shake or something when they block an asteroid or something along those lines to make it more clear that it is a feature of the game.

The balancing between clicking asteroids and dinos seemed impossible. For my simple monkey brain at least it was just better to focus on either or. And at this point I of course remembered the space pause thing and went to try it out. Sadly it did not work at all on macOS Chrome at least. Ability to quickly pause and unpause with a press of a key would have most likely made it lot easier and more strategic to play. Albeit a lot less actiony. I'm playing on touchpad so especially would have helped here because quick and accurate movements aren't the best with it. The fullscreen was borked too. It kept the game size the same but just had it in a black void.

Anyways, good job!

marcusnystrand 2020-04-26 15:09

@n-feofentov Thanks! 1:21 score is not too bad, well done! Thank you for your feedback and rating :)

marcusnystrand 2020-04-26 15:11

@trigueiro Great feedback, I agree :) Thank you!!

holysparks 2020-04-26 17:05

Really good! The dinos are cute and have them breeding is a nice touch. Pausing gave me some mixed feelings because I felt like cheating, but then the game gets really hard with a shower of meteors of various sizes and speeds. I enjoyed it!

marcusnystrand 2020-04-26 17:34

@holysparks Thank you! I guess the pause feature would make more sense if the game was longer. Now it is too hard hehe :)

kleinzach 2020-04-26 18:03

Good work. I like the concept of juggling the dinosaur mating with destroying asteroids. At some point, it had a huge difficulty spike where all of a sudden there were 5 giant asteroids which felt unfair and just made the game end without really feeling like I was doing anything wrong. Good job though, I really like the dinosaur sprites :)

ruthiepee 2020-04-26 18:28

Awesome game. I originally clicked on the thumbnail because you and I both made a game with a similar theme. Only yours is executed a lot better, LOL. The added mechanic of getting the dinosaurs to mate was really clever and well done. The game overall has a lot of polish and I love the particle effects. I think maybe the difficulty scales too quickly, because it becomes impossibly hard really fast around the one minute mark. I got 1:26 which reading the other comments seems pretty good. ;)

rodrigo-castro 2020-04-26 18:49

Good game. Simple, but complete. I could play more. My suggestion is reduce the screen. Put a HUD in the side and use smaller width.

marcusnystrand 2020-04-26 19:39

@kleinzach Thank you! Yeah I agree it gets too difficult too quick :)

marcusnystrand 2020-04-26 19:50

@ruthiepee Thanks for your comment! I played your game too and left a comment :) Your dinos looked super happy and cute hehe

marcusnystrand 2020-04-26 19:50

@rodrigo-castro Thanks, great idea!

josephbyam 2020-04-26 22:08

This was pretty fun and I didn't have a mouse so super frustrating. It was smooth though and engaging

marcusnystrand 2020-04-26 22:19

@josephbyam Thank you! It is pretty impossible without mouse hehe :)

the-martijn 2020-04-26 22:45

The graphics are simplistic, but I really liked this sky! Gameplay was fun, but hard with my touchpad, haha

zerohbeat 2020-04-26 22:55

Very hard game but really cool and a bit addictive :D Really enjoyed the graphics and the sound fit really well with the gameplay. Thanks for the experience :D

pask320 2020-04-27 12:32

Nice arcade style game, graphics may not be overly detailed but thats not necessarily a bad thing. Fun little game cool idea.

kayahr 2020-04-27 13:15

Well... you could also call this a dino incest simulator :D

jaywoody 2020-04-27 14:37

Cool game! You have to really be on point with your mouse skills in this one. :) I like the pixelated look of it and the audio works well. I had fun trying to keep them dinos alive!

megamasterx 2020-04-27 14:47

This is decently balanced and pretty fun! Very well put together and looks like it was scoped JUST right for a game jam.

ridderfar 2020-04-27 16:17

Funny game. But I had a hard time watching my male dinosaur breeding with its own child.

sharks 2020-04-27 16:19

Very cool sounds and interesting mechanics. It gets a lot harder trying to play on a trackpad though! :joy:!

charlietu 2020-04-27 16:29

Now that is some cool pixel art style ! Love the look of those dinosaurs :) Great game, keep up the good work !

remus-rain 2020-04-27 17:53

Very good job! Very nice art, very nice music, mood etc. But I just feel like the game design has not reached it's full potential. Just dying everytime one of the dinos is hit feels very frustrating especially when in some situations it feels like the player cannot do anything to prevent it. Maybe you could make it so that the player can still continue as long as he has at least 1 dinosaur? And that the dinosaurs produce back over time as you already have it in the game.

docgeraud 2020-04-27 18:00

I really like this entry. The idea of using the left clic to do totally different things (dash and destroy) is really elegant design. Great job!

mykola 2020-04-27 18:56

I love the idea! Very simple yet very engaging. Love the art and the sound even though would prefer something more funky in terms of music to fit better to the mood. The game is very well polished, well done for a solo jam entry!

b-golda 2020-04-27 19:05

Cool idea, funny sprites, gameplay simple and intuitive. Like others have said the difficulty ramps quite quickly or randomly which is fun but would be nice if there were waves to survive that maybe gave you a little break where you could get upgrades for your dinos based on how many asteroids you've destroyed or something.

Overall fun little game!

bitpokit 2020-04-27 19:20

I'm a lover of anything dinosaur, and this game is by far one of my favorites. Simple, cute, addicting, and fun. The dinos mating was a hilarious and awesome surprise when the baby popped out! This reminded me so much of a classic game I used to play a lot when I was little where you would shoot asteroids down to protect a city. I also love the idea of protecting the dinos from extinction. Thank you so much for making this, it made me happy! Brilliant work! :smile_cat:

kjscott 2020-04-27 20:04

Good little game this, I did like how the large meteors would destroy the trees should they land on them and had a much bigger explosion radius too.

marcusnystrand 2020-04-27 20:20

@remus-rain I agree the game is very frustrating haha :) There are a lot of things I should fix but I decided to keep the game as it is and just look at it as what I could accomplish in this short time. But thank you for feedback, it is very valuable to me :)

marcusnystrand 2020-04-27 20:22

@b-golda Thanks for your comment and great ideas for improvement! I actually wanted to implement an upgrade system but didn't have time :( Great idea that it should be wave based, that would have been better I think

marcusnystrand 2020-04-27 20:22

@bitpokit Thanks for playing and commenting :)

gorypixels 2020-04-27 21:35

Very simple but well executed! A great jam entry, well done! :D

hornicar 2020-04-27 21:48

Nicely done ! The dinausors were super cute and the game was well balanced (altough it got really hard after a bit ^^)

sprotex 2020-04-28 07:24

I like the take on the theme! The game gets way too difficult way too fast, it seems at about 1 minutes mark. Maybe with some upgrades along the way it would have more progression and people could play it for longer? I enjoyed your game and would like to see more on this concept.

asue 2020-04-28 11:08

Nice little game. It's was fun when the dinos started hopping and a baby appeared x)

vex 2020-04-28 12:00

A simple game made a lot more interesting by mating dinosaurs. Very cute, great idea!

very-dark-lord 2020-04-28 12:56

Tiny dinosaurs! Cute. :D Quite funny idea, and gets so frantic! Thanks for this.

eugenik 2020-04-28 13:50

I had a laugh playing this game. "Oh look, they fuck!! :D" Hilarious game. Yeah, keeping it alive. This is it.

midnightmist 2020-04-29 01:08

Haha interesting concept! Very addicting

calcitherin 2020-04-29 07:21

Great Entry. Loved everything about it. The graphics were so cool.

eran-haas 2020-04-29 10:25

Fun! Get frantic fairly quickly. I love the visual style. Great color pallet and texture.

1punnyguy44 2020-04-29 21:52

Great game! This is a lot of fun my record is 1:11. idk why but it reminds me of the Dino browser game that you play when theres no internet. The difficulty curve is pretty steep but that's not to much f a problem in this style game. the art is excellent though I think certain things (like the fire behind the meteors and the explosion) could use a little more polish. good job!

evert 2020-04-29 22:12

Addictive little game with a lot of potential (power ups for the click-to-destroy abilities? :sunglasses:)! I liked playing this for a while, though as noted before I think the difficulty ramp could be a bit less  And maybe some visual feedback for the huge meteors? So that the player knows that clicking it is really doing something? Very nice overall, thanks!

marcusnystrand 2020-04-30 07:24

@antti-haavikko Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful feedback!! I appreciate it a lot :)

marcusnystrand 2020-04-30 07:25

@evert Thank you for your comment! Powerups is a great idea, thanks for the suggestion!

other-wb 2020-05-01 15:13

Haha, that's an amazing concept ! Tried to keep y dinos in one corner and save that area from the meteorites :D I really enjoy the style, visual and audio, altogether it looks like a complete final product ! Well done !

theceases 2020-05-01 17:18

The entire time I was yelling "I'm gonna die! I'm gonna die! AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!". Lots of fun, and I love the graphics! Sound is good too. :smile_cat:

marcusnystrand 2020-05-01 21:16

@other-wb @theceases Thank you for your comments!!

jordgubben 2020-05-02 14:45

I like thet twist that the game actually takes reproductive ability (i.e. there being both male and female dinosaurs left) into account. But then again, nature always finds a way.

sotsnut 2020-05-02 14:51

The little dinos are so cute!

matootsy 2020-05-03 06:19

A simple mechanic well in the theme. It's funny to see the male and female dinosaur making kids dino. And we really want to see more and more of them. That's the addictive part. The pixel art is simple and clean. It's a good entry! A little bit difficult, but I had fun to test it.

ludumdaredevil 2020-05-03 10:59

That was really cool! I liked that you could get the dinosaurs to mate giving you more chances to save them.

danilo-bezerra 2020-05-03 21:41

Frenetic hard game and I like it! :sunglasses:

And I really like the general idea in making the species alive by protecting at least one dino for each gender.

Congrats!

jdk2209 2020-05-03 23:04

What a great use of the theme and execution. Really fun and simple, with great graphics and a fitting music. I really like the mating mechanic too, it feels super refreshing compared to other games with a similar set of mechanics. If I had to point out anything, it'd be the scaling of the difficulty, as it becomes almost impossible after a couple of minutes playing, but it makes sense, being a small and simple game, so no complaints. Congratulations on a great work!!

floyams 2020-05-04 14:49

I tried to build an whole family en then a meteor shower came by...

marcusnystrand 2020-05-04 18:16

@floyams I'm so sorry to hear that :)

Cool game, but quite difficult!

rewzu 2020-05-07 10:59

Very simple concept, but quite nice execution. I like the graphics. Those dinos look so familiar... ;) I suggest a bit more variety and slower difficulty progression. Overall nice entry!

Graphics and sounds (special mention for the OST) are pretty cool ! The reproduction mechanic is funny

marcusnystrand 2020-05-07 17:08

@ausstein @nilodree Thank you guys for playing my game! I appreciate it a lot!!

firesplash-entertainment 2020-05-07 18:21

Thanks for submitting the game to our stream

I enjoyed playing it. It looks so cute - the background is amazing!

Also the sound fits on point - I like the retro style all over the game.

Damn! After about one minute it gets quite hard. Nice job!

marcusnystrand 2020-05-07 18:36

@firesplash-entertainment Thanks a lot for playing and rating my game :)

papaver 2020-05-07 18:43

Nice little game! I enjoyed playing, although I was not very good at it  I like the audio and the graphics ( but I was a but surprised by the square explosions). Well done!

marcusnystrand 2020-05-07 18:55

@papaver Thanks! Yes I should make the square explosions round instead, I agree :)

flying-dog-fish 2020-05-07 21:21

Fun game! It gets really difficult after about a minute and a half.

dane-tesla 2020-05-09 20:22

A lot of stuff was told so I'll just say that I liked it and gave you 5/5 xD I especially like the sounds.

marcusnystrand 2020-05-09 20:44

@dane-tesla Thank you :)

coleslaughter 2020-05-09 23:29

A simple game, but I appreciated the twist! Originally I fell into the trap of trying to shoot down every meteor that came on screen, but then very quickly learned that I just had to make sure I protected the dinosaur gender that was most in danger. Tying your fail state to what is essentially 2 separate health bars is a pretty clever idea. :)

Wish the difficulty ramped a little slower, but I had fun with what I played ^.^

joe40001 2020-05-10 00:44

Good idea but I think it needs a little more balance, it quickly got too much to handle long before you could accomplish too much.

clipper 2020-05-10 11:19

A nice and simple arcade. I like how it is polished and those gems like mating mechanics. Nice. The difficulty goes beyond the roof at some point though, but hey, it is really hard to make a good difficulty curve in such short time. My game for the instance is too easy haha Cheers!

marcusnystrand 2020-05-10 11:25

@Clipper Thank you for your comment! I agree and will definitely fix the difficulty in a post jam version

Tornar-me bom no jogo é outra coisa.

Analysis...

1 - Mechanics, Learning and Flow: There are mixed feelings when playing; (especially in the browser version) there is some difficulty in controlling the mouse cursor (because it has the potential to exit the game screen). It might be a good idea to pause the game when that happens, I don't know what the best way to solve this would be. Hahahah. The game is simple, keep the dinosaurs alive (they will reproduce in the meantime). Destroy meteorites (etc.) while supporting the passage of time. There is a detail, how dinosaurs can be female or male, so there are times when you have to make quick decisions about "which to let die". But the pace of the game is very fast, it is very difficult to make this important decision so quickly. I think it would be good to decrease the frequency of meteorites at the beginning and in the first few minutes, so that the player can get used to it (even if it means taking longer for the dinosaurs to reproduce). Who knows, they may lay eggs (which would give an extra variation in terms of "protecting something stopped"). Learning to play was easy and intuitive. Becoming good at the game is another thing. The game flow scales very fast and with the uncontrolled cursor (it must be the fault of my mouse and playing in the browser), it ends up generating some anxiety. Being able to pause the game is something interesting to think about (I don't know if it was the team's goal).

2 - Graphics, Audio and Narrative: The graphics were very nice, congratulations. The song was also an interesting beat. The narrative is simple and straightforward: keep the dinosaurs alive, help by destroying meteorites.

3 - Culture: The game has a lot about "dinosaurs", "extinction", "protection", "reproduction", "arcade", "clicks". The game mixes these styles and can be polished to better achieve this crossing of themes.

4 - Monetization: I believe it is an arcade game, it could sell with advertisements for smartphones. Or it could be sold to some online tool, which can be embedded in the application download for users to play if the Internet fails (hahahahah, references).

This is a fun mini game! I liked it a lot, the art style is nice to look at, and the gameplay loop is short but fun as well :D, the only two things that I have feedback about are that 1st. I found that around a minute and a half, or 1:30, the meteors become so frequent that it’s super hard to avoid them, and usually I die at around that time, [my final highscore is 1:35 btw :p]. and the 2nd thing is that I’m not really sure what purpose does having more dinosaurs serve, like it’s easier I think to have just two dinosaurs, and then try to defend those dinosaurs.

I think if you expand this game in the future, you could maybe design it so that the dinosaurs give you a certain currency, and the more dinosaurs you have the more of that currency you have, and that currency can help you buy upgrades or equipment, and that equipment can help you defend against the meteors more, or something like that.

Overall it’s a fun mini game, and I liked it :D also the fact that you can pause is a nice feature as well, so many games don’t have it [including mine :p], so I like that you added it!

@sinci1 Thank you for your feedback! I actually planned on having a shop system but didn't have time :/ Might do it in a post jam version :)

mikdionio 2020-05-11 03:53

The game is simple but really nice! The dinosaur mating was a good mechanic. I found the difficulty nice at first but that sudden difficulty spike kind of felt too unexpected. It felt like I there was no way to survive that. My suggestion instead is to use the trees for difficulty. Like in Space invaders where the houses that acted as shields would eventually get destroyed, you could use a similar thing for trees. There would be more of them to shelter the dinos at first but they get destroyed as meteors hit. Other than that great game!

marcusnystrand 2020-05-11 07:03

@mikdionio Great idea, I will keep that in mind :) Thank you!!

kamekai 2020-05-11 17:11

I like that the difficulty scales perfectly. You learn the basics, then get introduced to larger meteors, then carnage breaks loose. Everything multiplies. Some here seem to think it's too hard too fast, but when you're playing dozens of games in a day you come to appreciate a game that doesn't beg you to stay for too long.

The music similarly keeps the pace, getting more frantic over time. You also made me realize I should start including mute buttons in my games.

Despite its simple architecture and straightforward gameplay, the game is greater than the sum of its parts. The mating system adds complexity and gives use to a mechanic which might seem useless at first: pushing the dinosaurs. How to strike a balance between too many and too few isn't immediate apparent. The player is now micro-managing two separate systems, which elevates the game from a slog to a challenge which requires attention. The environment props give the player relief while breaking up the monotony. Each thoughtful detail adds up to a comprehensive arcade experience which could have been a hit a few decades ago.

How to improve? I think a destructible environment would have been cool. Maybe the trees heal over time, but a continued barrage destroys them. A point system would help the player feel a greater sense of achievement than a simple number would. Adding/subtracting for dinosaur death/births, meteors destroyed/missed, etc. And just to increase variety with little effort, perhaps a simple powerup/item system where the player can do things like momentarily freeze time, add more environment props, extra points, etc

Overall, great game with a lot of polish. I enjoyed it!

@kamekai Thank you for your in-depth feedback! I appreciate your ideas of improvement and will definitely consider them for a post-jam version :)
