LD36 — Ancient Technology

Of Asteroids and Emus by HellBlazer 2016-09-01T02:45:00

Jeeze, I really really liked the writing and mood here, and I need to play it again before I can have any worthwhile feedback but wow.

Also, Alejandra pls. Stop being mad at me just because I made all the wrong decisions. >_<

Any Person's Planet by comatomatoes 2016-09-12T06:29:00

"stranger, could __ __ a pickle." Hey no need to be rude, natives.

I'm really impressed by this. Easy to understand, and I appreciated having the keyboard shortcuts to speed things along a little. I played a ton of it having fun learning the language and trying to work my way up to owning a goat. No dice, didn't manage to repair my ship at all, but had fun doing it.

Looks like you wrote this in plain JS too, which impresses me even more.

Ahab's Mystical Wagon Adventures by Franklin's Ghost 2016-09-07T03:49:00

Holy crap the animations absolutely blew my mind from the start. Completely in awe of the style. Would love to see a full game from this.

Ancient Technologies by csanyk 2016-09-13T04:26:00

Love how you designed the full experience. As someone who never owned an Atari it was pretty neat to push the buttons to see what happens.

Very authentic feel to the game itself too, and right on with the theme. Really great job all around.

Curse of the golden skull by Jack Slinger 2016-08-30T00:33:00

Enjoyed what I played of this game! Music fit nicely, simple effective graphics, fun platforming.

But I got stuck early on at the checkpoint at the bottom of the level, where you drop the vase to reveal 4 wooden platforms. I’m probably just missing something obvious but I couldn’t reach any jumps past the platforms. It’s running pretty framey on my aging laptop so maybe that is affecting the physics.

Also I (should have but) didn’t realize you could walk through the wooden spike sections so I had some fun narrowly clearing that spike trap after the second checkpoint. That’s probably why that’s there. Great way to teach that mechanic.

Punch Card Panic by Quicklyer 2016-08-29T22:27:00

Thanks!

If I had spent more time on it I would have fixed a few things like the "too much text" issue, and worked on a less abrupt ending.

I thought I'd submit it as-is (mostly done) for anyone that might get a nostalgia kick out of it though.

Punch Card Panic by Quicklyer 2016-08-30T02:09:00

Oops yeah, thanks Anudin. If you lose keyboard focus in the game, pressing TAB on the keyboard should bring it back.

Not sure why clicking on the input area doesn't work. Maybe because it's a lower z-order on the page than other elements on top of it. Another thing that would have been nice to fix.

Age of Garbage by Anudin 2016-08-30T01:56:00

Harald throw the garba… no Harald don’t drop it there. NO HARALD don’t throw it now – Harald we need this job, stop goofing aro… ARRGH.

Still, it’s hard not to love a dinosaur named Harald.

200 Generations by Traf d-Lo 2016-08-29T22:53:00

Right on with the theme, and pretty impressive catalog of obscure tools. Very nicely done!

Love2d sounds cool too, I’ll have to check that out. Great to see so many Linux supported / web games.

Portal to Darkness by InfiniteGames 2016-09-13T04:45:00

Pretty creative and unique gameplay, and yeah the graphics and music are fantastic. Nice work guys.

Spear Dash by robochris 2016-09-01T02:03:00

My first game over was less than 2 seconds in. I kind of love that. The understated sfx are a great match: “ugh.”

Had fun with it. Gives me hope that one day I will learn how to properly slide tackle a Turkeydactyl.

Windows Misery: Professional Edition by triinuliis7 2016-08-30T00:56:00

Funny because it's true.

I JUST WANT TO E-MAIL CAT_PICTURE.EXE

Nice work on reconstructing the Win 9x UI though. Definitely brought me back.

Sorter of Antiques by alfadur 2016-08-31T04:41:00

This was fun, and a great take on the theme. I genuinely enjoyed the gameplay. It’s always interesting to think about the modern era in terms of the far past or far future.

Reading the choices made me laugh out loud. I guess as long as we are not counting the new Two-Handed Stone Axe 6S then most of those classifications are accurate, I agree.

Great entry. Also loaded so fast I though I accidentally clicked on the screenshot link. Not even joking.

Kill me now by Pierrec 2016-08-31T19:17:00

Really enjoyed the style and the colors used for the character art. Had to play it when I saw the screenshot.

Thanks for the walkthrough too I got stuck about halfway through (but I’ve always been bad at adventure games). The only real stumpers for me were using the flask on everyone, and interacting with the cat 3 times.

A Dragons Tale by TiByte 2016-08-30T01:24:00

I like the color scheme. Reminds me of LoRD, the old old school BBS doors game. Makes me kind of wish I used that as an inspiration for my entry.

Earthling Exhibits by Lacaranian 2016-08-31T04:12:00

Yeah made me smile throughout. That slow plodding music put a nice satirical edge on the art and gameplay. I liked it.

Played it a few times trying to figure out the min/max strategy but I only made it about 20-30 months each try.

Fun and memorable, nice work.

Babel by johnbjuice 2016-08-30T00:11:00

Really great game! Charming presentation, great music, and actually quite fun to play.

Ancient Invaders by Insality 2016-08-31T19:40:00

Great stuff man, impressive art and interesting idea for co-op play. I continue to be amazed by what people can put out in 2-3 days.

Sassy Salesman Simulator by rodobodolfo 2016-09-07T02:41:00

Such great humor, I laughed out loud a few times (earth needs a case to protect itself from the phone, Morgan Freeman spinning for 3 days).

Fantastic work on everything: the style, the caricatured customers, the music.

I love how the salesman calls everyone ma’am. Maybe that’s just an oversight or bug but that is really funny.

The Machine by jeremyfa 2016-08-31T05:10:00

Very very nicely done! Easy to understand gameplay sections with no need to tutorialize.

Super cool visual effects: the fading in/out, the really smooth animation, the timing on the drawn text. I liked the font and color choices too.

Also really intriguing story. Humans as “one of the few/only successful” civilizations is a very interesting theme for an astronomy nerd like myself. Would love to see more.

Where Is My Boat by PlasmaErnst 2016-09-13T04:37:00

Yeah, really like the graphics and the eerie atmosphere. I would love to see a creepy horror-ish style full game with a similar feel to this.

Cuclock by The Mad Strauss 2016-09-13T08:44:00

Wow, the quality of this game certainly feels way up there for an LD game. Imaginative, creative, and unique. Great to look at, great to listen to, fun to play. Music fit so well for this kind of 'time pressure' puzzler.

As a dumb WASD player my only complaint would be the use of the (X) button felt hard/awkward to reach for. Maybe E or R, or a button from the right hand could have been easier to use.

Either way, fantastic work you guys.

Yggdrasil by AnaGF 2016-08-31T19:27:00

Really great concept for a game, and great mood set with the music and art.

Key Adventure by g12345 2016-09-12T08:56:00

I really really love those simple but sharp visuals. And that Zelda screen pause/scrolling, I remember paying $5/weekend to rent games not too far off from this one.

Also, that vanilla JS coding performance boost. Please multiply all feedback by 2.95.

My only lame criticism is that WASD mapped to arrow keys would have been nice. Also a little more feedback on damage. Phenomenal game, can't wait to see your next.

WakeUpCall() by quill18 2016-08-29T23:58:00

Very impressed by this game quill. I listened in to at least half of the weekend, but I wasn’t following along close enough to know how to play beforehand.

It was simple to figure out, the aesthetic is very nice for a NetHack style game, and the flavor text is great.

Impressive game, 4k lines of code, all done while streaming. Built & ran it on my Xubuntu ‘quarantine computer’ with no problems.

LD42 — Running out of space

Disaster at Starbase 7 by rjhelms 2018-09-04T17:52:47Z

Got heavy Blaster Master vibes from this game, brought me back.

The music loop was a nice fit, and the growing corruption telling you where you need to go along with the shooting recharge rate being nicely balanced all made for really enjoyable game. Nice work!

Path of Excess: Hoarder vs Horde by quill18 2018-08-13T16:52:25Z

Nicely done as usual quill, pretty impressive scope for 48 hours! Really addictive and a lot of fun to play.

Johnny's Flipbook Space Adventure by schizoid2k 2018-08-28T19:08:09Z

Impressed to see this was a compo! Unique art style, charming backstory & sfx, and the additions to the basic gameplay fit the theme really well.

Can't think of a single suggestion. I found it a little difficult too but I've always sucked at Asteroids. Seems like it's meant to be played in short sessions anyway. Very nice work.

Evercloud by SecondDimension 2018-09-03T01:51:25Z

Yeah the mood was fantastic, the overall affect of the game reminded me a little of Milkmaid of the Milky Way. Loved every minute of it. Plus it led me to your other games and now I'm a follower for life.

Brain's little symbiont by Local Minimum 2018-08-26T23:06:41Z

As a long time appendix supporter I think this game was amazing. Certainly made me laugh. Top marks for humor and creativity.

Endless Game by gmaker 2018-08-15T22:35:30Z

Wow, definitely one of the compo standouts for me. Incredibly well done.

Scrap Field by ping78 2018-08-31T16:52:27Z

Wow, can't believe this is a compo! Both the gameplay and the visuals were really great. I liked the black & white look a lot. That along with the overall quietness gave me a "caught in a bad dream" vibe that I _love_ in games. Really great job!

Hoarding Hank by BarkerGames 2018-08-15T00:01:27Z

Nice work on this. Funny idea nicely fleshed out. I kind of liked the tank controls since it adds to the humor of the manic stress of trying to organize your mess.

Didn't realize you could grab on my first attempt! Talk about game changers.

Anatomically Drunk by Moczan 2018-08-13T00:05:16Z

Laughed out loud playing it. Loved the animation. The screen shake and limited controls were a great fit for the drunken theme.

NO MORE ROOM IN HELL by panurge 2018-09-02T00:27:47Z

Really liked the humorous and candid dialog. The good feedback on the shooting made the retries to get to 200 a lot of fun. And oh baby was that reward for 200 burnt souls worth it! Oddly kind of looked like a relative of mine...

GRANDMA KNIGHT by manusaiz 2018-08-16T18:01:44Z

Really sweet story, actually choked me up a little by the end. Very memorable. Liked the music a lot too. Great work guys.

Put What Where? by Joe Miller 2018-08-14T01:32:00Z

Oh god. A micro managing nightmare. I loved it.

The gameplay and sense of stress & urgency probably fits the theme better than any game I've played so far. Perfect title for the game too.

Plug And Shoot by Hagge 2018-09-02T21:30:29Z

Really fun and creative! Great application of the theme. Tower defense games usually kind of bore me but the hectic nature and the upgrade system had me hooked. I must have played for half an hour today. Great job guys.

Crowded Dungeon by RandyTayler 2018-08-18T04:16:04Z

Bummer about all the work that got canned. I liked the creativity & writing, and I want my ticket for Chapter 2.

I particularly liked the fake beard / pretending to be a dwarf moment with the option to just plainly say "I'm not a dwarf." Reminds me of a part from an old adventure game that I remember thinking was pretty funny: https://i.imgur.com/w0Zbtyw.gif

Petris by JoshyOshKenoshi 2018-08-31T15:35:38Z

Cute little tetris clone. The # of lines speedup is missing but otherwise a pretty solid recreation. Nice to be able to jump into the occasional game and already know how to play.

Would've liked to have seen more tie in with the theme though, there's probably lots of fun additional ways to incorporate running out of space into tetris. Didn't prevent me from playing for like 25 minutes though!

Password Camp by Rombus 2018-08-14T00:22:44Z

Welp, no way I can be objective about this one. Even as a kid I knew it was bad but I _loved_ the Friday the 13th game for whatever reason, and your homage, from the visuals to the controls to the music, is great.

CapyBarbra: A New Brow by Ratherjolly 2018-08-30T03:01:29Z

A nice spin on the usual capybara eating eyebrows formula we've seen so many times. Kinda creeped me out a little but left a big dumb grin on my face.

Also really liked the music, especially the title screen music. Great work man.

Disk Allocation: Typing Spectacular by electr1ca 2018-08-13T16:17:29Z

Had ton of fun with this one. Really liked everything from the design to the art to the music. Great job.

Stop the Darkness by Florian van Strien 2018-08-14T20:54:39Z

Really unique idea aided by charming pixel graphics, really liked this one. I'd rather not say how much time I spent building up the world postgame.

Then I realized the world is randomized. Oh no. Probably going to be playing this many more times.

High Castle by Wheffle 2018-08-13T22:52:53Z

Wow, really impressed by this. Striking intro, cool atmosphere, great music, and surprisingly deep mechanics without being overly complex. Definitely on my short list of compo games to go back and play more of.

Precious Things by Patrick Woodcock 2018-08-13T22:46:52Z

Ahh my precious 8 toilets and 3 king size beds! All gone!! I knew this day was coming.

Made me laugh and I ended up replaying it a bunch more times than I was expecting. Kind of like a reverse Angry Birds (if you'll pardon the comparison). Nice work!

Bityville by Blueman 2018-09-02T00:51:36Z

I really (really) like the minimalistic visuals along with the friendly difficulty of the game. Makes for more of a sandbox style "cultivate this garden how you want to" type of game. Throw in some more gameplay hooks or objectives and I could see myself playing this a whole lot.

The Angry Talking Goblin by cdox 2018-08-13T17:08:57Z

Enjoyable little loot game, nice work! Made me smile and chuckle a few times. I kept playing after maxing out my gear, kind of wish it went on forever somehow.

Space Opera by t-mw 2018-08-16T21:17:54Z

Really creative way to apply the theme to a music sequencer. Give me more levels and I will play this game for hours. I kind of wish you could see the potential note placement as the current beat moves along, but I'm a filthy casual.

Loved everything about this from the clean visuals to the soothing audio, excellent work!

The Game Collector by Sebastian-M 2018-08-24T00:29:51Z

Hah, played _way_ more than I expected. Something about the mostly-flat nature of the consoles makes it really fun, and I had to know how far the music evolved. Fullscreen on the HTML5 version would have been a plus, but not a big deal.

Great stuff guys!

edit- BOOM 1,611. No idea how I managed that: https://i.imgur.com/AkJJzqs.png

Backspace Bouken by Jake White 2018-08-17T21:39:00Z

Great work guys, really enjoyed the game.

I was actually tossing around the idea of doing a grid-based dungeon crawler for this event since I just replayed some classics. I'll have to peek at your code and see what approaches you took. I'd be interested to read a post-mortem if you guys write one.

Lien Acres by HoldMeImScared 2018-08-13T21:16:08Z

Yeah, count me in as someone who would love to see a full sim game with graphics like these. They have an almost SNES Sim City feel. Great work on this.

I seemed to be able to build greenhouses for free (once I had the 300 gold) a few different times, I think that might be a bug? Maybe I'm misunderstanding something though.

Ouch! by Zachary Shah 2018-08-13T19:54:59Z

That title screen music is hypnotic in a creepy weird 70s sci-fi kind of way. I really liked it.

Game is fun and simple too! It's hard to catch how many points you ended with though, would be cool if it showed you your score upon death or your high score or something. Nice work!

ReMind LD-42 by EvanM 2018-08-13T14:11:37Z

I'm big on narrative games, touching if a little heavy, very thoughtful. Maybe something like selecting 1 of 3 options would have spiced up the gameplay a little, but I think I get that wasn't really the point of the game.

Liked it, hope to see more!

CLAUSTRO by Blinkenlights 2018-09-02T02:02:56Z

The number of compos I'm really impressed by grows by one. _Really_ liked the visual style, the mood, the little touches like the words typing themselves out as you place them, the in-game representation of everything (title screen, high scores, etc), I could go on. Really liked it.

But as a spoilsport party pooper cheater hacker I noticed that the word pool is kind of small -- so if you were to just place unique words as you got them, and place duplicate words fully over the same existing word, you've got a loophole to keep playing forever? But then again, given the dark tone, do I want to keep placing these words? Do I want a high score, or a low one? Arrgh see now I'm all conflicted! You did this Blinkenlights.

Downscaled by WongKongPhooey 2018-08-14T19:57:10Z

Nicely done all around on this one! Excellent music too. I laughed out loud when it got to the watch phase. I was waiting for the last phase to be individual pixels on a binary clock display or something.

I've got to get in on this Pico-8 business, all the Pico-8 entries I've played so far have been really really cool.

MASTER OF POWER (vs jealous villagers) by randdir 2018-08-13T19:29:06Z

Pretty addictive once you get the hang of it. I really like the title screen art and how the villagers look (they also kind of look like they are dancing along with the music which is great).

Claustro by Taimidori 2018-09-01T23:02:11Z

Yeah man, the music along with the black on purple colors and alien looking sprites really gave the game a great eerie mood. Liked it a lot. For some reason my first thought was that this was taking place through a microscope lens, but that can't be right (simple abstract games tend to make tiny brain work overtime on unnecessary details).

Anyway I also liked the idle short squat animation of the character and how most of the sprites looked and animated in general. Nicely done.

Interstellar Stupidity by Jono953 2018-08-15T20:45:15Z

Wow, great work! The frantic shooting was a lot of fun. Really impressed considering all the limitations you imposed, that CGA color palette brought me back.

I also appreciate that the game ran flawlessly on my crappy Windows laptop even when a 100 sprites were coming at me. Lots of pretty simple 2D entries tend to bring this thing to its knees.

Running out of Space by Andre van Zuydam 2018-08-14T20:13:06Z

Really liked the popup illustrations in the beginning, humorous and a great way to explain the rules. Bonus points for implementing two different interpretations of the theme. Good stuff!

Pathcloser by Suchista 2018-08-15T19:59:16Z

Really creative idea! Some real difficult puzzles too. Nice work on this.

Only suggestion I can think of would be slightly faster movement to make retries quicker. Or maybe a rewind mechanic? Not sure if that would nerf the difficulty too much though. Anyway great job!

Judgement by -Synth- 2018-08-13T15:48:56Z

Unique concept, feels like it could be really fun if developed out further. Good stuff!

Compressor by Austino Bobino 2018-08-13T20:29:41Z

I like it! Fun little application of tetrominos. Interesting since the time pressure is still there like in Tetris, but in a different way, with usable pieces disappearing.

Would have liked a "finish level" button, and randomized destination areas. Maybe something to add if you continue working on it. Good job!

Greenie Goes Right by quicklyer 2018-08-17T21:41:43Z

Thanks everyone for the nice comments and good feedback, some stuff I'd have never thought of. I'll be reviewing them closer and taking it all into consideration for next time.

Greenie Goes Right by quicklyer 2018-09-04T22:56:13Z

Wow, I am completely humbled to get in the top 100 for fun. Again, wow. Thank you guys so much for the support and feedback. Really gives me the motivation to work a thousand times harder on the next one.

Snake advanced by Joran 2018-08-28T18:33:51Z

_Love_ snake clones. The closing in walls twist added more depth than I would have thought -- racing head on towards a wall in hopes to get the piece and reset the walls before you find yourself cut off and tangled up.

The catchy music was a good fit too. Might have been fun to have the player's speed increase as the game went along. No real issues with the controls, felt natural after a few turns. Had fun with it!

Stack Overflow by firefly4 2018-08-13T13:45:55Z

Nicely done! Fun little game. I liked the drop shadow effect on the visuals.

Only suggestion I can think of is having the controls displayed matching arrow key layout for quicker reference (up above left/down/right). Really liked the concept.

Plastic Patch Cleanup by Lars-Erik 2018-08-14T21:12:24Z

Something really satisfying about sweeping through dense pockets of the plastic debris and picking up hundreds of pieces in a stretch. Enjoyed it, nicely done!

[ARK_DRIVE] by Josia Roncancio 2018-08-14T02:15:20Z

Arguably the most important 7,945 byte video game on the internet.

I'd triple the rating for creativity on this entry if I could. Here's hoping my 2.5mb sexy mosquito makes the trip successfully.
