LD39 — Running out of Power (66)

air mail by rubna 2017-08-17T11:35:53Z ♥ 0

The audio was really great and worked well for the experience of the game. The gameplay is simple but the atmosphere is nice, the graphics are really neat and look soft. The game almost reminded me of Monument Valley in a way!

The Color of Days To Come. by DragonInstall 2017-08-17T09:56:51Z ♥ 0

Awesome graphics and idea, but not so much of a game as it is an experience obviously. Some images were a bit cliche but all in all this was a pretty nice piece of interactive art. Some parts felt like they took forever but once you got used to the waiting without having to worry about moving forward, it was alright. I don't necessarily see this fitting very well with the theme, but art is all about taking some liberties, after all!

Is Your Refrigerator Running? by urbanhelsing 2017-08-13T15:15:48Z ♥ 1

Heya! Game looks really interesting, mind making a web link as well?

Decaying Card Game by filippy 2017-08-11T18:30:31Z ♥ 1

Got to 33 on my first try. The game itself is nice, of course it could look nicer with some better graphics. It's also pretty RNG which isn't necessarily bad, but there's ultimately not a lot of tactics to be made since you'll always run out of cards regardless. I still enjoyed playing it though, I loved seeing everything burn! Ha-ha!

Teslabus by h.attila 2017-08-11T11:11:56Z ♥ 0

Am I supposed to avoid everything else except the batteries? It sure seems like it!

Fart Squirrel by Pandakipu 2017-08-11T11:07:20Z ♥ 0

Well, that's definitely one way to see "power"... although I can't say I was really running out of it, but rather, gaining an unlimited amount of it. The music rocks, though!

Greenville Deliveries by Fred Aberg 2017-08-11T10:27:05Z ♥ 0

And on the 8th day, god decided to fill planet Minecraft with invisible walls...

No matter where I fly, I crash. Even though it seems I'm flying 20 meters above the bushes and the street lights but if I fly above them, I crash. I fly towards my goal building, I crash. It makes no sense. The idea you have here is pretty neat, but the execution could be better. The graphics look fine but if you're going to have to dodge literally everything, you should make it more clear that even the green hills (?) that you can hardly tell from above are obstacles, should be avoided.

Apart from that, the game works fine. I didn't find the waiting to be too long and the ship sails smoothly. The audio fits well as well. The only problem is the fact that either those objects on the ground should be way bigger or the player should be flying a lot lower. Otherwise it was a good entry.

Battery Penetrates by ToadieTechnika 2017-08-11T09:48:34Z ♥ 0

Ha, what a concept. The general look and the sounds work very well, the gameplay is smooth even though a little difficult to understand at first. I do wonder where you got the idea from, haha...

Lost in the Dark by Schu 2017-08-11T09:43:44Z ♥ 2

The simplicity of the graphics works well here: there's nothing extra to distract you from the real mission. The mazes themselves we're alright and the idea of losing the POV is pretty cool is also neat. My absolutely favorite thing, however, was the music. Had it not been for the crazy cool chords and melodies (especially in the maze with that one super long hallway if you go up) I don't think I would have played for as long as I did. You really did well with the music!

Space Dog by Thygrrr 2017-08-11T09:29:18Z ♥ 0

Takes a while to get the idea of the game but the sounds, graphics and the whole story work very well together, this is a really strong entry!

A Black Screen by qzqxq 2017-08-11T09:12:57Z ♥ 1

Whoa! That was a lot of fun! I beat all the levels and liked all of them a lot (well, except for maybe the maze...) You have a really nice voice and the audio sounds are very good in general. The whole concept for the game is genius, even though it's a bit of a reach from the LD theme. This is definitely the experimental kind of stuff I want to see people do in this game jam. I really wish more people would get to see it.

Wind, Sun and Power by concalf 2017-08-11T08:22:45Z ♥ 0

Positive stuff:

- the game is easy to understand and the gameplay and the mechanics works well and are simple. - the concept itself is good and uses the theme fairly well

Some stuff to improve on:

- it wasn't very exciting. You might want to consider adding some challenge, enemies, something to make the game more intense or so that the player feels like they've achieved something. Right now it's more like there's no way to lose, no penalty for anything. - the wait during the day felt too long since there was nothing to do

As for the audio, it's a shame there's no sound, I think it would have helped the game with its atmosphere tremendously. Some relaxing music would have set the feeling from the start.

The art was decent, although if I were you, I would have changed the background because it wasn't clear what it was supposed to be (I figured it was either a horizon and the items were just flowing in the air, or a sea and a land. It's a minor thing but would have helped you with the visuals a lot)

All in all, this is a decent entry, with a few changes you could turn it into a pretty interesting game!

Tax Rebel by LeReveur 2017-08-11T08:04:36Z ♥ 1

I personally wasn't a fan of pathfinding but apparently a lot of people thought it worked well in this game, so maybe it's just me. The guards work very nicely though, they're definitely smarter than you average stealth game guards!

No Sorcerer's Sky by TheFlyingKeyboard 2017-08-11T07:57:11Z ♥ 1

Atmosphere works well. Music is nice and art is pretty easy on the eyes. But just like everyone else, I wasn't able to get anywhere in the game. I was clicking the items that flew by, but it didn't seem to change anything.

Powerhouse by Madbeagle 2017-08-11T07:51:05Z ♥ 1

I ended up with the a high score of 1935! It took me a while to get there, haha. I really enjoyed this game, the graphics work well and the puzzles are challenging enough to be interesting even though the function is always the same. The timer also seemed very appropriate. Thanks for this entry, it's definitely one of the best ones I've seen this week!

Caffeine Raid by Cataractar 2017-08-11T07:28:13Z ♥ 3

I made it to the raid! Not much to complain about this game, to be honest. It looks really good (as a super minor complaint I would have maybe made the rooms look a little bit different with colors, but in all honesty you've accomplished a LOT in just a few days so I have no room for whining, haha), the gameplay is flawless and it's pretty fun. I didn't notice any bugs, either. I got it right on my 4th try when I decided to go up first - Mom always walks around the same route, right?

Coffee is Power by Tyler Miller 2017-08-10T11:59:03Z ♥ 1

The graphics were great and the music was awesome! Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to win. After I had finished everything with the checkboxes, I was only left to drink coffee and write if statements for hours... Not sure what else I was supposed to do? I lost the game anyway.

ODISSEUS by MarkWolf 2017-08-10T11:44:37Z ♥ 1

Interesting game, I liked the graphics (not a fan of the speaking sounds though, it got a little tiring after dying multiple times). The mechanics work fine and I had an alright time. The characters were also pretty funny. Good job!

Unpluged-bot by eptwalabha 2017-08-09T16:31:46Z ♥ 0

I like the mixing of the mechanics - graphics could have been worked on and the difficulty could have been higher/maps larger, but I liked the thinking this game actually required from the player. Solid 3/5 entry.

Scale of Life by ilya_kozlov 2017-08-09T16:24:09Z ♥ 2

Like literally everybody above me has said: these graphics are absolutely awesome and work really well for the game! I have to admit, though, that I didn't understand the point of the game, because all feedback I got from the planet was "great" or "awesome" even though I had no idea what I was doing.

Legend of Sunflower by johnnydalvi 2017-08-09T16:18:39Z ♥ 1

Overall, this is a really good entry! The game mechanic is simple yet challenging enough so that you don't get to win every level on your first try. I also enjoyed the music and the graphics were generally good (especially the UI graphics looked excellent). This is genuinely a very solid game working nicely with the theme. Great job!

Last Shine by Fran Segura 2017-08-09T16:07:36Z ♥ 1

In my opinion, this game was more of a story than a beat 'em up, but it did an excellent job at telling the story through music and art, both of which were very good. The combat was pretty easy, which made me feel like it was more of a support for the actual story, so if you wanted to focus on the gameplay, you might want to have made it a little bit more challenging (and longer). But looking at it from a storytelling perspective, the concept is really good and original and the story you had chosen was actually pretty moving!

Bead on the moon by Hishicorne 2017-08-09T15:44:43Z ♥ 1

Good art here, nice idea and pretty good execution as well. The only problem I would have is the actual recipes. I was trying to figure the right ingredients out by myself, but I couldn't see a single bitter or sour ingredient so it didn't make a lot of sense. Apart from that, the system worked well (although I'm not exactly sure how the timer worked, since it seemed to go back to -10 every time it got to 0) and this is a pretty neat game!

LudumsWitch by Tommy 2017-08-09T15:34:51Z ♥ 2

The concept here is pretty awesome and so is the music (Meow! Die!), the graphics are also really good as well as the general style of the characters. The enemies spawn a little slowly but apart from that the game is an excellent entry.

RobotPowerStrat by pyokoanarogue 2017-08-09T14:34:20Z ♥ 1

Like Brent over there said, coordination is pretty difficult, it took me a while to understand how to operate the whole thing. The game is clear and the concept is nice, I also like it that you're not running out of power as suddenly as you do in (as it seems) most games in this LD.

Hyper Battery Girl by Deke 2017-08-09T12:45:47Z ♥ 1

This is really good and challenging! Maybe a little bit too challenging for my taste, but for a person who's more familiar with these games it's probably an easier experience. I'm not a fan of pixel graphics but for a game like this they work pretty well. Overall, excellent job!

Journey in the Dark by FurkanFS 2017-08-09T12:33:45Z ♥ 1

Great atmosphere and nice idea - really the only complaint I would have is maybe the pathways could have been clearer, it was really hard to figure out which platforms I would be able to jump on and which not. Apart from that I really did like the artwork as well. I never got to run out of power, tbh, I always got killed before that got to happen.

The castle by Tero Pulkkinen 2017-08-09T12:22:49Z ♥ 1

the graphics is pretty nice, but too static…

Pepe, The Power Plant by RobotsAndMuffins 2017-08-09T12:13:15Z ♥ 1

This is a really nice looking little game and I definitely enjoyed the graphics, although I think some variation between the levels could have made the game look a little bit more interesting. The gameplay was pretty simple and it works well for a demo of a game, but for a platformer it was fairly... flat. Had there been some obstacles, or enemies or maybe the sun could have been blocked by the clouds or the weather, the game would have been more exciting.

Wind-Up Knight by joemag 2017-08-09T11:47:01Z ♥ 0

This was a lot of fun! The mechanics were working well, the game was easily understood and I even learned to like the silly sound effects. Good job!

Plug Me by hav24 2017-08-09T06:59:23Z ♥ 0

After dying 68 times I had hit level 5. This game was brutal. I could see why other people would like it though.

Ted Crashed! by Sebastian-M 2017-08-09T06:44:56Z ♥ 1

I had a good time playing this one, the music as well the as general atmosphere was very nice and the gameplay worked well. It doesn't exactly fit the theme, but as a game itself it's really decent!

Gem Diver by Yirggzmb 2017-08-08T16:23:47Z ♥ 1

Good stuff in here, this game could very well be made for children (that's the impression I got, anyway). The gameplay was really easy but it was fine since there were quite a few levels. I liked the different worlds but I wish the graphics had been a little more polished since the game was all about the colors and visuals of the world. The collision box was also pretty big compared to the character. Overall though, good job!

Remote by oab 2017-08-08T16:05:46Z ♥ 0

Interesting game,I found the colors you had chosen to be maybe a little too similar, not sure if that was on purpose or not. It's a nice little concept and the sounds are pretty cool!

Lantern by Kaban 2017-08-08T16:01:53Z ♥ 1

Great visuals, nice atmosphere. My problem wasn't really with running out of power as much as it was just not being fast enough!

Oil Patrol by SeanNoonan 2017-08-08T15:56:53Z ♥ 1

Great music and nice interpretation of the theme, I also really liked the little footprints in the snow. I'm generally not a fan of pixel art but it actually worked pretty well in this game!

Cat Herder - THE CATPOCALYPSE by Meanderthal 2017-08-08T15:42:55Z ♥ 1

Funny stuff. For once I managed to win a game on my first time here!

The Political Juggle by Phlip45 2017-08-08T15:33:39Z ♥ 1

At first I was confused... then I was confused and laughing. This was so much fun and I absolutely love the voice acting! I must say the sound effects weren't entirely clear to me (when you lost or won a minigame) but it's not like I would have had the time to pay attention to all the little games, anyway! Great job!

ROOP (Running Out Of Power) by Spetsdod 2017-08-08T15:24:54Z ♥ 1

This is a pretty cool game, I, too, found controlling the ship a little difficult (web version). The gameplay is clear and easily understandable. It's a neat little game!

Cosmo Beat by Super Shark 2017-08-07T14:22:41Z ♥ 2

Lovely art and music! Like others have said before me, a tutorial would be really useful.

BATTERYMAN RECHARGES THE WORLD! by XAVIER_INDIE_GAMEDEV 2017-08-07T14:03:38Z ♥ 6

I'm really glad I gave it a shot, the graphics are amazing and the game worked very well! I had difficulties finding the 2 remaining batteries, but maybe I was just being blind. This is one of the rare games where all things - the game mechanics, visuals, sounds - work excellently. I, too, wish that there had been background story for the main superhero, but I also liked the beginning you already had there! Great job!

The Sorcerer's Apprentice by donvermo 2017-08-07T11:08:53Z ♥ 0

Really cute character and nice, even though pretty classic, idea. The music also fit very well!

Power Tycoon by oparisy 2017-08-07T11:03:30Z ♥ 0

Interesting game! I have to admit, having some graphics there would have helped me to understand the game better sooner (but I understand you were in a hurry). Good job!

daemon by bombjack 2017-08-07T10:59:39Z ♥ 1

Great artstyle, but difficult gameplay. You might have wanted to make the beginning easier and the later parts more difficult.

Light It Up by yawoada 2017-08-07T10:52:56Z ♥ 1

It's a nice demo, I found it pretty hard to actually kill the blue squares, but I liked the mechanic of the game. Good interpretation of the theme!

Apprentice by ThiefViolinist 2017-08-07T10:48:10Z ♥ 1

Nice graphics and the idea is cool. Controlling the character was definitely the hardest part. I would recommend to have the controls so that the arrows always go to the same direction, by global axis, and not by the character. Other than that, nice entry!

Geralt's secret powersource by Sublustris 2017-08-07T10:43:02Z ♥ 1

Great graphics, solid gameplay. Jumping was something I found a little difficult and I mostly died due to not being able to jump on the platform and landing on a snail instead. This weirdly also reminds me of the medieval paintings of soldiers fighting snails... Good stuff!

Fugetaboutit by Scared Square Games 2017-08-07T07:05:06Z ♥ 0

Absolutely loved it! On my second try I managed to last for 48 days. The stories are awesome (I especially liked the poem about the meatball) and the characters look great. Coincidentally, we also had a similar idea for a game at first, and I'm really glad somebody else did it and did it this well, too! I truly felt like a mob boss!

I am genuinely surprised I don't see any reviews here, this is a really decent game, looks amazing and has a very well working concept as well. Have you guys remembered to leave ratings for other people's games?

About this game in general, I really liked the mood and the way the plant head worked. The gameplay was really easy to get and was definitely interesting enough to get me try to play all the different modes a few times. Overall, great job and I really hope that you'd be found by more people!

Running out of spoons by Andrea 2017-08-06T17:05:56Z ♥ 0

Good stuff here!

Positive things: - interesting concept, definitely gives a new perspective to the theme. I'm not familiar with the lives of the disabled so I was really curious about how you would portray the world these people might live in. - the gameplay works well and is very simple to learn - good graphics, the pictures are very clear and the colors are easy on the eyes.

Some criticism: - because you were able to click on the items with your mouse, there wasn't really any point in walking around - I'd say, choose either or. I personally found the clicking a lot easier, but moving the character around did make it feel more real, like The Sims. - once you get the hang of the game itself, it became very easy and the important message wasn't conveyed like you had probably intended. As long as I just slept twice in a row, my spoons would get to 100% and I got the wheelchair in no time. I didn't really find any difficulties in my disabled life. - No ending? I played til day 23, had bought everything I could but there was no resolution to the game.

Anyhow, overall it was a really interesting concept and the gameplay worked well, so good job!

Just played this through. The concept was very well executed and the gameplay was something I hadn't seen here before (granted, there wasn't much of a gameplay, but the clicking on the thoughts was a really cool touch). The graphics were pretty good for the most part (although it did take me a while to figure out what the classroom was). I liked the beginning the most, it definitely had an intimidating feeling to it. The music and the sounds were really spot on most of the time and created a very decent, depressing atmosphere.

I think this game worked well as a demo for what you could do had you had a little more time. I do wish you had spent maybe just a few more hours on the ending, now it really caught me off guard. All in all, I'm glad I stumbled upon this game!

Slipper Man by HawkSandwich 2017-08-04T19:13:28Z ♥ 0

Great, original graphics and a nice idea. Unfortunately I found the third level with the silver buttons and the black background a little bit too difficult and after about 30+ tries I just gave up on it.

Space Whale Adventure by Cole and Jordan Studios 2017-08-04T18:17:15Z ♥ 0

Awesome graphics and sounds, but the gameplay itself got a little tiring after a while. The idea was cool and I liked the 3D objects in 2D space but I do wish the game had had some kind of a conclusion (maybe a timer, for example, as in how long you manage to stay will be your high score?). The setting was really original and cool, but I'm not sure how much it's related to the theme this time. Overall though, good job!

Running Out Of Power Plant by oakus 2017-08-04T17:14:35Z ♥ 0

This game probably has the best name of LD39, haha! The gameplay was decent, I really enjoyed how many checkpoints there were because trust me... I broke his head a lot of times.

Some obvious issues: if you fall down the hole after the 2nd ramp, there's nothing you can do but restart the game again - there also seems to be no end to the game, as after a while you just end up on the gray platform (unless there is a way somewhere that I happened to miss?) A wall before the gray area would have made that clear, at least, so right now I'm not sure what it was supposed to be. I get that 3 days isn't very long and I assume you simply... ran out of time.

All in all though, I really liked the idea and the graphics as well as the sounds were pretty awesome!

The graphics and the general theme is good, and I also enjoyed music... at least the first 5 seconds I ever managed to hear. Maybe I was just really bad at this game, or it's just very difficult, but I couldn't get past the 3rd light. You might want to make the beginning a little easier because even understanding how the mirror works and where the game considers you to be "in the light" takes a little while. It's a nice idea though and I definitely like the little Dracula!

Robo TakeDown by Menip 2017-08-04T16:51:20Z ♥ 0

Interesting game, decent graphics and concept. I was a little confused by how the defending balls would sometimes move and sometimes not. I made it to 1016 on my second try by just spamming as many defenders as possible. In a way I wished that I could decide each defender's direction separately so that they wouldn't always end up as a bunch, but all in all it was pretty fun. Good job!

Amazing graphics and the idea is simple yet very well working. I wish there had been a "level finished" window before you get to choose the powerup: I ended up missclicking plenty. (I also got stuck in the corners/sides of the area, but it only happened a few times). Overall, great job!

It was a good game and entertaining. I was a little surprised by getting assassinated as everything seemed to have been going well for me up until that point. In a way I wished there was a way to see what the public (and the West) thought of me, but then again I did like the spontaneous feeling. Good job, though!

My Name is Bunny by AlexClay 2017-04-27T12:37:37Z ♥ 2

The game was interesting to play and I liked the political statement it was making (regardless of whether I agree with it or not). I thought waiting for the money was part of the experience, to understand the long wait these people have to go through, so I didn't think there was anything wrong with it, since the mechanics in general weren't the main focus of the game anyway.

I enjoyed the music a lot, and it was visually appealing, and I thought the pixel art fit well with the low poly world. Unfortunately I do have to point out that I couldn't understand the final picture at the end, I have no idea what it was portraying. The story (with the name of the character, or was it all just a dream, etc?) was also something I didn't exactly understand.

I'm also curious, is there any way to lose? I only played it through once and I found it interesting that there was no chance of actually having to face the consequences for the fake IDs, or possibly being deported back or something. I was almost hoping to fail at some point! Other than that, I do think it was well made for a small game with a big meaning.
