Played a game about playing games while drinking caffeine to stay awake while drinking caffeine to stay awake. 10/10 would drink caffeine to stay awake and play games again

I am really impressed! The game looks excellent, and you even had time to put in a player select. Everything about the mood reminded me of having a sleepover when I was little. I really liked it. The game is a little difficult, since once mom sees you its basically over, but its short enough that its still fun. Excellent job!

cataractar 2017-08-01 03:04

@pbg Glad to hear you liked it! Yes, you have to burn a lot of Caffeine to be fast enough to be able to escape, and even then you have to trick the AI, which takes a little bit getting used to :) We tried to encourage stealth, and trying to not be seen, instead of always being able to run away

hoogmin 2017-08-01 03:45

The mom approaching me truly was a scary experience! Nice and simple game.

pixel-game-wizard 2017-08-01 03:51

Nice! I like the humor. The mood definitely resonates with how I'm feeling right now. :-P

I think the sounds are pretty well-designed. I like being able to hear the footsteps - it adds to the mood of sneaking around in the dark. I think the door sound is also good because it catches my attention.

I had a bit of trouble seeing the coffee cups (if that's what they are?). I'm not sure if that's intentional, or if even it's just me. The size of the bags was good though.

So... just one question out of curiosity - why's mom out of bed at this late hour? :-P Anyway, good job, it's fun!

The camera does a great job of keeping things in view in terms of the level! I only wish we could see more of the awesome character art while playing. Great Jam!

cataractar 2017-08-01 17:13

@pixel-game-wizard The sounds were generated with sfxr. Unfortunately we didn't have the time to make some background music for the game. We lowered the lighting towards the end of the jam! Yes, it is a bit hard to see the instant coffee when they are lying in the shadow. We probably didn't realize that because we knew where the spawn locations are. Oh well. :D

pixel-game-wizard 2017-08-01 20:27

@cataractar Oh cool! I'll have to look into sfxr sometime! As for background music... you know, I almost think this game is better off without background music. The mood already fits... and you'd need to make sure your music didn't drown out the useful footstep and door sounds. So I think the audio is fine. :-)

EDIT: Yeah sfxr looks really useful! Thank you for sharing that info, I'm very likely use it!

Nice interpretation of the theme! Simple, but the game-play works well. I dig the character style, they sort of have this puppet look. It feels like an episode of a kid's sitcom with puppets, where they try to stay up late.

Unfortunately, I found a couple of odd bugs that somewhat hampered the game. If you click a button to use a coffee, and then press space bar to pick one up, you'll consume one in your inventory. It seems the UI keeps focus and keeps a button highlighted, so when you press space again, it'll click it. I also encountered another bug where the game just kicks me out to the main menu seemingly randomly, despite not being caught, and not falling asleep.

Other then that, the game-play was solid, good work!

cataractar 2017-08-02 08:23

@zee Yep, we also encountered the main menu bug, but couldn't find the cause. It seems to happen less on the Windows version. We somehow didn't realize the first bug. Actually, E also works for interacting, it shouldn't happen when using that key. I'll look into it later today. Thank you for the bug report!

EDIT: With your info I was able to reliably reproduce the bug! I've uploaded a fixed build. THANK YOU! :)

Brings back memories of my youth, good times.

zyzzyzzyz 2017-08-02 14:23

I really dig the hide and seek style. There's quite a lot of nuance to it. You have to be cautious, but at the same time you're on a timer - which you can refill, but at the cost of your score. Everything comes together to create some surprisingly complex game play.

knorz 2017-08-02 20:53

Love the game. Its such a funny concept! Great work!

Please play, rate and comment our game aswell: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/disaster-on-nebula-one

Very nice infiltration game, the mom approaching is effectively very scary ^^

tero-pulkkinen 2017-08-03 18:39

doors opening/closing is the best part of this game. They even work reliably.

yirggzmb 2017-08-04 08:43

Nice concept! And well done. It seemed like I drank all of my coffee collected at one point when I meant to only do one. Probably user error though.

bombjack 2017-08-07 11:27

haha! It looks like me on monday morning.

theflyingkeyboard 2017-08-09 23:19

Really fun game to play, but needs some polishing. Good Job!

screech 2017-08-10 13:34

Really fun game and a really different art style to other games what made it stand out! Nice polish in araes to the game aswell.

cttfow 2017-08-11 07:28

I made it to the raid! Not much to complain about this game, to be honest. It looks really good (as a super minor complaint I would have maybe made the rooms look a little bit different with colors, but in all honesty you've accomplished a LOT in just a few days so I have no room for whining, haha), the gameplay is flawless and it's pretty fun. I didn't notice any bugs, either. I got it right on my 4th try when I decided to go up first - Mom always walks around the same route, right?

pilarius 2017-08-11 09:19

@cttfow Glad to hear you like it! Mom has some fixed patrol points but a random order accessing them. So you never know if she is around the next corner punishing you for interrupting her sleep ;)

rubyleehs 2017-08-11 14:39

Amazing game, overall probably one of best games I played so far in this jam (though I haven't played much as I was busy)

The SFX for the footsteps/door opening really made the game tense and in turn, really immersive. Though it would be nice if the player could increase the volume for the SFX as it was kinda hard to hear for me playing without earphones in a semi-noisy environment.

oakus 2017-08-11 14:47

wow, fun game with enough variety in mum behaviour and cofee spawns that kept multiple plays entertaining. fitting graphics and sounds and good context that anybody here can sympatize with. Some inventory overview maybe with ability to use target item would be good, but that's just nice to have...

knarfux 2017-08-11 15:09

Ahah, funny concept, and the game can be really hard to highscore. It get me for a while !

lereveur 2017-08-11 18:28

I manage to obtain not more than 110, but it's because I'm bad. It was fun to juggle with stock, avoiding mom, and get maximum caffeine before returning. Oh, and this moment, like : "Oh-oh… There is nowhere to hide here, I'm stuck…"

codechomper 2017-08-11 18:50

I Recently played your game during a live stream at your request. [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEKsM8vugRs) .

What a cool way to use power.... programmers are powered by caffeine! I had a lot of fun trying to sneak around. My second off air play through I figured out the hiding mechanic. Fun game, thanks for submitting!

if you haven't already please give my game a try [Zombie Power Station](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/zombie-power-station) HTML5 Thanks

Cool game!

simonhutchinson 2017-08-12 00:07

Cool! Really impressive work (especially in terms of graphics) for 72 hours. This is a fun little game.

Coffee is life!

indiealchemist 2017-08-20 16:36

Good game! Good interpretation of the theme! Good graphics! Good job!

drachmor 2017-08-21 18:48

This was a very fun, albeit slightly stressful game! I enjoyed the meta joke of a developer needing coffee to survive, and the idea of the developer's mom being the enemy was also really funny. The controls felt fairly responsive, and I liked how many objects I could interact with in the rooms. After playing a few times, I got a decent feel for which spots I should return to if I needed to hide, when it was safe to enter new rooms, and I was fairly satisfied with a score of around 150 (I died before I could see the final count). The sound design was minimal, but what was there was well done. The art style, while simple, was also very effective. Overall this was a great entry!
