Great idea with the audio navigation. I solved the first few levels with my eyes closed but the maze was too hard for me :-)

jake-hyman 2017-08-01 09:02

I cannot get the game to play. Just a link to a page without the game.

jonathan-whiting 2017-08-01 09:03

This might not be your fault but... I can't find what to click to actually run the game at itch.

alexanderteah 2017-08-01 09:17

I like it! It's quite funny, and it's a very cool concept, unfortunately the maze bit was a bit too hard for me. :D

lipsch 2017-08-01 09:39

** Fun **

It had a constant grin on my face because I was so amazed of the concept of having a 0 bit game :D

** Innovation **

2D top down puzzle game (uh, boring)

Just kidding :p

**AWESOME** Never seen something like it.

** Theme **

You got the theme.. But the game as it is, has nothing to do with the theme. Like only the intro.. Don't know..

** Audio **

Was okay. No special sounds, +1 because it's all you deliver :p

** Humor **

Was fun.. :D

** Mood **

No big mood the game made for me..

** Overall **

I really enjoyed the concept. Was fun to complete the game. If it would have had more levels and objects to interact it would have been even better. **Great Job!**

@jake-hyman, @jonathan-whiting: If you're using Chrome, you can enable flash by clicking on the "Secure" in the upper-left hand corner and going down to "Flash" and clicking "Always allow on this site". I think that might be why you can't see it. I'll go add a note to the itch.io page.

There's a graphics glitch in a game that makes it literally unplayable for me. It's basically just a black screen.

Seriously though, it reminds me of the times when I've had my first minor eyesight problems and decided to make a game that you can play without looking for when I go blind completely. Unlike yours it was a racing game though (you've had a navigator who told you when to turn and in what direction).

I enjoyed your game quite a lot. Sadly it doesn't look (no pun intended) like something you can expand on and make a full project of for obvious reasons. But then again, how many games are there for blind people really? I see quite a few gamers with different disabilities from time to time who have special tools and contraptions to play games, literally people with no arms playing mainstream action games. But there's not much you can do when you're completely blind. And then again, that's what I love about Ludum Dare - you can have games here that you won't see anywhere else because they only work in a game jam environment.

Anyway, on the game itself. I usually strongly dislike LD games with recorded voice, but this one is a nice happy exclusion from that rule. You have a nice voice and mic I guess. The levels are nice, I think there could be 1 or 2 more actually. The hardest one for me was the one with the maze, I think I've missed a turn to the left near the rightmost wall at least 2 or 3 times and went back to the beginning. Last level, surprisingly enough, I've completed on my first try and in seconds. It's almost too easy, could have beaten it with my eyes closed (pun intended).

Anyway, great job, looking forward for more original games like this one in this and future LDs!

hehe, interesting idea, nice to try and get a mental picture as i was wandering about. neat concept and enjoyed playing.

once i sorted displaying flash in the browser it was fine ;)

cttfow 2017-08-11 09:12

Whoa! That was a lot of fun! I beat all the levels and liked all of them a lot (well, except for maybe the maze...) You have a really nice voice and the audio sounds are very good in general. The whole concept for the game is genius, even though it's a bit of a reach from the LD theme. This is definitely the experimental kind of stuff I want to see people do in this game jam. I really wish more people would get to see it.

elmismopancho 2017-08-12 03:17

I've seen games made for blind people, but i've never played one, and is amazing what your senses can do. Great job creating the levels I was able to finish the whole game.

Loved the game! Without a doubt this is THE most creative entry I've seen so far. The audio cues were easy and fun to follow, and your voice was definitely easy on the ears. The same cannot be said of the stars, though. I swear I still hear them although I can no longer distinguish where the sound comes from. Probably somewhere in between my ears.

Loved the levels (except the maze). They were all fun and short (all but the maze), and presented an enjoyable variation of the idea (sans the maze). Would definitely play it again (not the maze though).

Of all the compo games I've played so far your game easily takes the cake. Congrats!

sarrixx 2017-08-13 15:01

This is a great idea and I loved playing it! I can't believe I actually beat it too :O Kudos on a very good effort! A couple of minor points - Maybe in the maze level implement a door sound at each 'corner' so that it is a bit easier to make a mental map of the maze. This might sound weird, but that was definitely the hardest level and I was thinking some kind of sound to recognize each time I turned a corner or entered a new 'hall' so to speak may have helped me navigate a bit easier. Secondly I think at the end it would have been really cool if the narrators monitor started working finally and maybe had some sort of boot-up screen as the win screen? Awesome job though dude, very creative!

rafael-souza 2017-08-14 02:54

Great idea, i really like it, it's a bit hard of course. Is there a jump? haha, maybe we need a diferent jump sound :) would be fantastic background sound change more, like when u are walking throung grass

I love the graphics, jk :)

nnnikki 2017-08-15 20:03

Great idea! Sadly, it's way too hard for me.

joebeard 2017-08-16 16:39

Way back in Uni we had a blind professor who tasked us with making a game with no graphics, and only sound. This reminded me of that assignment. It really brings home the importance of sound in a game, especially in terms of aural cues. I had no problem completing the levels, and the narration (especially the end) kept me grinning throughout. This is probably my favourite LD39 entry, cheers!

luckyfeathers 2017-08-16 22:43

This is my favorite game of Ludum Dare 39. Great job! Absolutely perfect game. It made me laugh, and the difficulty was perfect. 5/5

somnium 2017-08-19 04:12

Very intriguing game!

The concept of this game is great, and so is the execution.

At first, I had some difficulty passing the first saw, since I assumed that the movement was grid-based. Hence I pressed W instead of holding it down, which did not move me sufficiently fast to get out of the way of the way. Once I found out that I could keep pressing W to run, it clicked for me.

The sounds work very well as a navigation aid, and together with the "hit wall" sound, it made it possible to make a "mental map" of the level as you play.

Nice take on the theme!

>Darkness all around, >with only sounds to guide me. >Will I find the stars?

Thanks for the comments, everyone, I really really appreciate all of them.

Some notes/replies: - I was a little scared that the maze level would be overly frustrating, and my apologies to those who really didn't like it (like @mrtwister heh). I left it in because I thought all the other levels were a little too similar, and thought this would be an interesting, different kind of challenge, so I hope you can all forgive me. :P - Based on the comments, it also looks like I was too conservative with the difficulty of the last level and could have made it a bit harder. Maybe I'll make a level with 4 stars and 3 saws and see how it goes, lol. - @mortus Thanks for the detailed comment! Yeah, each LD, I always look forward to the games with high Innovation scores, since they generally have some really creative ideas that you wouldn't see anywhere else. - @sarrixx That's a really good idea, I think I see what you mean and I agree it would have been really helpful on that level. - @joebeard That's really interesting, sounds like a pretty cool class. And thanks for the comment, I'm glad you enjoyed at least some of the humor. - @somnium It's interesting how many assumptions game developers make of players, and comments like this are helpful for pointing out the incorrect assumptions I made, so thanks! On a related note, when I got a friend to playtest this, he thought it was a 3D game at first as opposed to a top-down 2D game (which is why I added that note at the beginning of the first level).

Again, thanks everyone for all of the feedback! The peer judging has always been my favorite part of Ludum Dare, and it's always helpful reading what others have to say. And I dunno if anyone will see this, but if anyone reading this wants me to play their game and leave feedback, let me know. I guess judging ends soon, but I'm always happy to give feedback whenever.
