LD39 — Running out of Power

Solar Digger by Rialgar 2017-08-10T23:59:54Z

Lovely entry! Everything seems to work as expected (found no bugs) and controls are quite responsive. If there was a winning condition or endgoal I missed it, though. It looks like I could just go on forever digging for gold/silver and purchasing upgrades, which I did, until they became way more expensive that I could afford with the little money that rocks gave. Perhaps adding more valuable rocks buried deeper would help with this.

I would also have loved some grid/tile snapping for digging and climbing up/down ladders to avoid "collateral" terrain damage while exploring the tunnels.

Would love to see a post-compo version, hopefully with music and sfx. Overall I think it's a really nice game. Congratulations!

Scarcity of Superpowers by Pavel Kouril 2017-08-13T02:41:13Z

A definitely fun game! After a kinda disappointing experience with the WebGL version I decided to try the Windows build, which worked way better. The laser vision was pretty useless IMHO, as it was slow to charge and didn't do much damage. I died at >150 kills but I don't know the exact number as my final score was nowhere to be found in the gameover/restart screen.

I felt like I had very little information or control over which power was going to become available at any given time. Perhaps I did not entirely understand the UI.

Audio was nothing to write home about, but was good enough, although it's definitely missing some music!

Loved the concept, graphics and the fun I had playing it.

It's a quite solid entry, especially for being done entirely by one person. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Kudos!

RobotiLab by afendar 2017-08-11T00:14:34Z

Nice game! It definitely suffers from performance issues but it was still playable (at least for the while I managed to play before miserably failing my mission. I don't know if performance gets worse later).

Graphics are great and quite well made for a compo entry, although it's kinda missing a "climb" animation. Sound effects work, but they feel kinda empty without music.

I think this game has quite a lot of potential. I hope you can make a post-jam version with at the very least some performance improvements.

As others have said before it definitely fits the theme, and although it's missing some polish, I really liked your game. Congratulations!

Fluffy Racer by pfeyffer 2017-08-04T23:22:40Z

Interesting concept. Took me many attempts to actually understand how it works. I believe your game would greatly benefit from some extra info (for instance damage seems to apply immediately upon grabbing something, while energy gain does not, which was confusing at first). Having said that, it's a simple, yet incredibly challenging game, and it's actually rewarding to see the outcome of what you hope were smart decisions.

The apparent randomness in each set of options makes it a little unfair. It seems entirely possible to lose early in game due to having only options that deplete your HP without giving you enough energy back. Conversely, this also means that if you are incredibly lucky (getting many low-risk, high pay options in a row) you can finish the game rather quickly.

I think it's a really polished entry, especially for being compo, and with a bit of balancing and clearer instructions I can see many people getting addicted to it.

Good job!

Sip Sip Universe by sugarbyte 2017-08-02T01:45:41Z

Pretty creative entry! I wasn't sure what to do at first, but after some playing around I managed to successfully make my own wine. And that felt really good. I experienced a collision bug within the winecellar; I was able to "jump" from the ship and was unable to return or do anything else but floating out of the screen, but that was the only problem I found during my play-through.

I failed to see the connection to the theme, though. On the other hand, it was really cool to see what other people made. It would be great if each shelf had a bottle on display for every X user wines stored there. It would also be cool if the game suggested a name for your wine based on the ingredients, or a "label" that states what the wine is made from, because right now it doesn't seem to make any difference what you use to make your wine.

Overall an enjoyable entry. Kudos to both of you!

Plugging Away by AfroAnt 2017-08-03T05:22:30Z

Loved the idea! Not an easy game, but I definitely enjoyed my time with it. I suck at handling emergencies in space though. Easily one of the best entries I've played so far. Kudos!

p o w e r ARM by xand 2017-08-19T04:42:44Z

Impressive! LOVED the music and atmosphere. I also love your particular style for graphics. Gorgeous world. This is an amazingly big entry with a lot of content, quite outstanding, especially considering it's a compo entry. I have no idea how you did it!

Was not really a fan of pressing ENTER to advance the text, as I had to constantly move my right hand between the mouse and the keyboard. Space or click would have been better options, I think.

I was unable to finish the game because I apparently suck at it, but it was extremely entertaining. I think I'll try it again, but with what I've seen so far it's enough to give you the best scores I've given so far to a compo entry.

Congrats!

A Black Screen by qzqxq 2017-08-12T03:37:30Z

Loved the game! Without a doubt this is THE most creative entry I've seen so far. The audio cues were easy and fun to follow, and your voice was definitely easy on the ears. The same cannot be said of the stars, though. I swear I still hear them although I can no longer distinguish where the sound comes from. Probably somewhere in between my ears.

Loved the levels (except the maze). They were all fun and short (all but the maze), and presented an enjoyable variation of the idea (sans the maze). Would definitely play it again (not the maze though).

Of all the compo games I've played so far your game easily takes the cake. Congrats!

The Sorcerer's Apprentice by donvermo 2017-08-19T22:14:51Z

Awesome graphics. Definitely would love to see this polished into a full game. There's some problems with collisions and the way the regular jump works, but the wall-jump was really easy to pull off (contrary to what happens with many games that offer that mechanic), and I really enjoyed that.

I really liked the style, although I saw in the comments that the character sprite was from a tutorial. That should definitely be stated somewhere in the description of your game. The rest of the graphics work well with it, though.

It's impressive that you made this in 24 hours. Congratulations!

Cavernous by Takki 2017-08-01T18:43:45Z

I really liked the ambience, and loved exploring the caves hunting for interesting spots. It was always exciting to find new pretty places.

Collisions and "rope" mechanics were kinda broken though. I fell right through the floor several times after jumping down, and in my few attempts, I consistently ended up unable to backtrack because climbing up ropes didn't really work as intended. It was impossible to "hop off" the rope at its upper end-point, so I was instead stuck climbing up an invisible rope to infinity. I had fun though, but I'm a bit sad that I'll probably never get to see all the interesting places in the cave.

Fun entry overall. I hope you can fix those bugs in a post-jam version!

THIRST by Togis 2017-08-11T03:02:57Z

Amazing game. Quite polished and fun!

Loved the mechanics, graphics and audio. The Dungeon Crawler + Tile Placement combo was quite interesting. I don't think I've seen that combination before.

I really had fun playing your game. It was a really interesting experience. One of the best entries I've seen this LD indeed.

Congratulations!

Plugzzz by mamoniem 2017-08-08T01:41:50Z

Love the art and sound. It had a sort of a creepy vibe that I quite liked it. Sometimes connections would not work as expected and had to re-do a couple of levels a few times because of this. The second time connections would normally work Ok.

I would have loved to have harder puzzles by the end, but given the time constraints I think it's fine. I just hope you keep working on this game post-jam adding more challenging levels. Great job!

Stellar Blackout by azsteak 2017-08-21T10:02:04Z

Really fun game! I suck at resource management games but I enjoyed this entry.

I loved the little details like the monitoring systems going offline, and the screen getting dim as you reduce the CPU power. The UI was easy to read and quite stylish. Helped a lot with the mood.

The max 100 citizen thing was confusing while playing. If I hadn't read your comment just now, I would have thought you had a bug there. An in-game explanation would be nice.

I also see in the comments that the music wasn't made by your team. If that's the case I guess you should opt-out from the audio category.

I can't believe this is your first jam though! It's an impressively well-done entry, quite apt for the theme, really content-rich, engaging, and very fun to play. Congratulations to the whole team!

P.S: Also note that Jam games are not required to include the source code, but it's nice that you included it.

P.P.S: For your next LD game, try rating more games from other LD-ers. I see that you haven't rated many games, and playing other entries is pretty much the most straight-forward and LD-friendly way of bringing attention to your own game. Consider that for future iterations.

Lost in Translation at Space by elmismopancho 2017-08-01T22:01:05Z

@lereveur: Thanks for the comment! Sadly our game uses Google's Web Speech Recognition API, which is currently only available in Chrome, sorry. As sad as it is, this situation makes sense, as the HTML5 Web Speech API specification was proposed and drafted by Google mainly, and it's implemented in Chrome via their own services, but I'm sure that eventually other browsers will catch up and integrate their own API-compatible solution.

Firefox for instance, has been adding a few options and changes for that, but there's no full support yet, so for the time being our game is "Chrome-only".

Lost in Translation at Space by elmismopancho 2017-08-13T02:02:31Z

@pavel-kouril: We used the [HTML5 Speech Recognition API](https://shapeshed.com/html5-speech-recognition-api/). We can definitely elaborate a bit more on that in a post-mortem. Thanks for your comment!

And really, thanks **everyone** for all the feedback!

Greenhouse Dystopia by DeadlyAlive 2017-08-10T23:30:30Z

Loved it! It's really challenging and fun. Good graphics, mood, music and concept.

I kinda missed a dedicated Jump button though. Jumping with "up" feels weird when you are not using a gamepad. The bit of randomness in enemy placement/movement sometimes created pretty unfair scenarios where (for instance) two enemies would be in the way when normally there's only one, making me use two attacks in a row, which depleted my energy entirely, so I think there's room for improvement there as well.

Overall a pretty solid entry, and in fact, I'm pretty sure this is the game I've given the highest scores in basically every category so far. Kudos for such a great job!

Titan LD39 Compo by NamInUz 2017-08-02T01:11:38Z

Nice concept! Gameplay was a bit hard to grasp at first, but then I got the "hang" of it (get it?). It was still too easy to accidentally fall into certain death, and moving from one spot to the next one was kinda slow, so there's definitely some room for improvement there. I also tried the jam version and will post my thoughts about it as well. Despite being insanely difficult I really liked the game! Good job!

Runnerbot LD39Entry by Pixel Game Wizard 2017-08-09T08:11:18Z

One of the most entertaining games I've seen this LD! I did not read that it was supposed to have a goal of 10K points, so at around 30K I started wondering if there was an end to what seemed to be an endless runner.

At >50K I closed the game because I had collected so many lives and items that enemies were no longer a threat to me, and I figured that perhaps the game was NOT supposed to run that long, lol.

I had fun though, loved the different enemies and obstacles. I'll probably play the Post-Jam version later. I really liked your game! Can't believe it's your first LD!

Coffee is Power by Tyler Miller 2017-08-01T18:59:36Z

Cute game indeed. A bit meta though!

I really liked the graphics and the tone of the game. I kinda wish making games was such a neatly-organized and peaceful experience!

I think your game will benefit from a few extra hints in-game, and an interact prompt/button to avoid accidentally activating things you didn't want to.

Overall a very nice little entry. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Pepe, The Power Plant by RobotsAndMuffins 2017-08-04T05:20:41Z

Lovely entry! I'm preeeetty sure I got the required energy level for the stage where I lost, so I guess there are a few bugs here and there, but it was a pretty pleasant experience overall. Definitely in line with the jam theme, and I loved the graphics and concept.

It's more of a relaxing follow-the-sun ride than a game though, which felt a bit weird but at the same time pretty cool. I agree that with more challenges and variations this would be a really addicting game, but it's enjoyable as it is.

Kudos!

Character Building by Badly Drawn Rod 2017-08-08T01:26:42Z

Very creative take on the theme. Glad to see a narrative game but it was a bit depressing that every outcome was bad in one way or another. Great commentary on life, and how decisions that you think may be the best for everyone could eventually be the worst. Great job!

KOCMOHaBT Spaceman by PjchardtTheSecond 2017-08-18T19:04:41Z

Interesting game. It failed on me at one point where I was unable to leave a planet and thus, continue playing. A bit before that, it started playing an audio track that did not relate with the text, so it was probably glitching already.

Loved the concept and narration, and the game kept me interested. Sound started becoming a bit annoying as the piano started aggressively overlapping with everything else, but I will probably come back to play it again. I need to see the ending!

Good entry! I enjoyed it a lot.

Cyborg Apocalipse by VirtualAcademy 2017-08-12T04:09:33Z

I wasn't expecting such a simple way of defeating the robots, but it made the game quite fun (and funny at the same time). Simple to play, hard to master.

While the source of the in-game graphics is obvious to anyone who've followed Unity tutorials, I quite liked that you didn't use the assets "as-is", and tweaked them to be more theme-appropriate. You could have used pre-made buttons as well, but you made your own, and I liked that you made them look like batteries.

I also like how the difficulty ramps up. The game would definitely benefit for Stage transitions, though.

Overall it's quite a solid entry, and it's amazing that it was made by such a young group of people. I was making stuff at that age, sure, but with way simpler tools. Something like Unity, Fruity Loops or Photoshop would've been like rocket science to me.

Congratulations, hope to see more games for you all in a future!

TITAN, Defend Earth before it's too late by MichaelTWG 2017-08-02T01:29:32Z

Fitting music and nice shader! (or whatever you used to achieve that CRT-like effect). This version is definitely more balanced than the compo one. It happened me twice that I paused the game with ENTER and was unable to return to the game, so I think there's probably a bug there, but I really like the improvements you made.

I think it would be nice if you gave the player the option to climb back the titan after falling. I'd also recommend you to avoid adding different input devices if not needed. If the only use for the mouse in your game is for one button, you better use another key on the keyboard. Unless the mouse pointer can be used to aim/move the camera or something, then there's no real reason for using the mouse at all.

Anyway, I liked your game a lot. Impressive work, especially considering it was made by just 1 person!

AC vs DC - War of Currents by Orbat Games 2017-08-12T22:36:47Z

I wasn't expecting a multiplayer game! (although should have seen it coming based on the game title) I sadly couldn't test it with someone else, so I had to pretend I was competing against a friend for the purpose of the review.

I liked the core concept, and it's reasonably well executed. As some people have pointed out already there seem to be an issue with the size or placement of collision boxes, though.

I think that with a friend this would have been very fun to play.

This entry has a lot of potential. I'd love to see a post-jam version with different powerups/abilities, stage hazards maybe, and an AI for single player!

LD49 — Unstable

Black Cat Apothecary by Omiya Games 2021-10-09T01:13:19Z

Quite an interesting idea. The "depth" of the underlying system intrigued me. I don't know how much of the dialogue I managed to see, but it was fun to watch the townspeople react or become suspicious of the effectiveness (or lack of results) of the potions. At one point they started repeating themselves a bit, so assume there was some randomness to it, or their speech options were just limited. I really liked how they had different personalities and stories btw.

After dying the first time, it was easy to find a strategy to "win" though. I managed to survive to "retirement" on my second play-through, which left me with little to no motivation to play further.

It was fun, albeit brief. The entry overall is quite polished. I missed a sense of progression or "time passing" at least. A visible goal (like survive a year, with some time-skip in between) would also have helped a bit to raise the stakes or create tension beyond the dialogue.

I really liked it! Very original take on the theme.

BouncyCake by NPr0nn 2021-10-12T23:26:21Z

Loved the idea and the level of polish! The game is pretty well done. Controls were a bit sensitive for my liking though. Most of the time I felt like even the smallest tap of the key would send me more than a tile away in that direction.

I also thought at first that the game was just looping the first level. Took me 2 or 3 times to realize that I had to break **all** the platforms before getting to the end. I **know** that it's in the game description, but I kinda missed it(because I didn't have any context of what it meant when i read it, and my mind had totally discarded that information by the time I got to play the game). Having that info in-game would have been nice.

Having said that, this is one of the most solid and well executed games I've played this LD. Well done!
