This is terrific. I was obsessed with dig dug when I could first reach the keyboard, and I don't think I've had this much fun digging down since then. Your sprite and animations are a joy to watch!

I liked it a lot! The world can be destroyed, you lose if the light ends, very good, and everything running so light in the browser, very good indeed, I've done a game in this style of world being destroyed and I confess that I had problems with the performance that made me give up, But yours looks like a feather so light it runs. Congratulations, you did a great job, but keep the idea going.

Have you ever played SteamWorld Dig? It's basically this

rialgar 2017-08-06 21:44

@perdugames the performance trick is easy: 1.: Tile based collision only, which is very fast. I only check if the 4 tiles the character is potentially in have any ground in them. 2.: Only render visible part of the map. It is not even using webgl, only canvas2d.

@infinitycore no I haven't, but I played other digging games. I previously made another one for another LD.

I think it's pretty easy to see what you were inspired by, but there is nothing wrong with that, what you have done is pretty fun for sure! I have a few problems but they all stem around the fact that the upgrades you can purchase don't seem to do very much and the price scaling is crazy! Went from $500 to $5000 and all I can see are little tiny money stashes.

codey 2017-08-08 23:49

Nice game! I like the minimalistic robot design! played it about 20 minutes. I reached a point, where I need 50000 gold for each upgrade. I think this is very much considering that he player has nothing else to do then digging for gold. It's also not very challanging. It would be riskier for the player to dig if there would spawn ghosts for example. The game could be expanded in so many ways! ;) (There should be a hint that you can toggle the flash light with Ctrl.. I got it after some minutes)

Agreed with the comment above, the 50k upgrade was a bit expensive considering that the rate of money acquisition didn't increase all that much. It's a very addictive game though and very polished indeed.

rialgar 2017-08-09 12:40

@morphine @codey @joebeard You are right, the upgrades don't help all that much. They are also totally unbalanced, I just picked some values and went with them.

baby-dino-herd 2017-08-09 15:24

Nice concept, though I didn't realize the flashlight could be toggled and, as others have said, the upgrades were a little unbalanced. The sprites were nice and readable even when things got a little dark.

Really relaxing game. I think that we don't feel the theme that much because at start we already have a lot of energy. You should add the controls of the game on this page as i discovered the flashlight on the comments. The game is really simple but work well. If i didn't have other games to check i could spend some time doing this :)

battlecoder 2017-08-10 23:59

Lovely entry! Everything seems to work as expected (found no bugs) and controls are quite responsive. If there was a winning condition or endgoal I missed it, though. It looks like I could just go on forever digging for gold/silver and purchasing upgrades, which I did, until they became way more expensive that I could afford with the little money that rocks gave. Perhaps adding more valuable rocks buried deeper would help with this.

I would also have loved some grid/tile snapping for digging and climbing up/down ladders to avoid "collateral" terrain damage while exploring the tunnels.

Would love to see a post-compo version, hopefully with music and sfx. Overall I think it's a really nice game. Congratulations!

I must say digging games are my favourite, so I felt myself at home with this one. Nice, sweet, laconic and addicting. I'd only suggest a couple of pacing tweaks (maybe speed up the overall process), and of course I'd love to see an enhanced version with new tiles/valuables and upgrade modules :)

legalsoul 2017-08-11 07:00

Incredible! So simple and so addictive :)) Damn, in the end I got myself burid deep underneath x_x The mechanic is really really deeper than it seems at first! Bravo!

prodigalson 2017-08-11 19:01

Very impressive compo entry. Game feels polished, object is simple and easy to grasp, the graphics are pleasing, and I found a way to create a "stair case" without having to spend points building ladders. ;) Wish you had time to add sound effects (music is a stretch but a simple digging noise would've done very nicely) Overall, nicely done

Neat digging game. Like all LD games it could use some polish and audio work but what's there is nice.
