I love your game, good work! The day/night cycle needs to be more obvious, think about icons or a little sun meter. I also question your choice of typeface. It does't agree with your art style. But otherwise a fun game and I played all the levels :-)

johnnydalvi 2017-07-31 22:40

Thanks for playing it @pfeyffer ! I agree, I was about to put a kind of clock (similar to the Don't Starve one) and change the way that the game changes the color filter between day and night (now is a linear interpolation between the colors, I need to make it weighing more to the night, otherwise the alpha channel screw things up =/)

Thank you for the advice regarding the typeface, do you recommend any source to look at regarding choosing the right one? I'm horrible with GUI elements

maffydub 2017-07-31 23:41

Nice one - a creative idea and nice graphics! I couldn't get past level 5, though - the "door" wouldn't open - I tried stepping on the brick in front of it, but nothing happened. Until then, quite fun!

internetpaulicy 2017-07-31 23:45

This is a really neat world of sources and sinks. I love the illustrated art style. The enemies are really well done especially the giant centipedes. Perhaps its intentional but sometimes I can move really fast and sometimes really slow( not sure why). The levels are really well designed and satisfying to complete :)

johnnydalvi 2017-07-31 23:47

Thanks for your feedback @maffydub !

The player needs to stay on top of it 2 seconds in order to open the door, I think I should have communicated to the player those mechanics, and I should also add a pop-up clock to display the time once the player steps on anything that is time-based.

I have this big problem that I'm not very used to think as if I were the player, since I know what to do I just assume people would know haha (not intentional). Gotta fix it >.<

lazzor 2017-07-31 23:48

Good work, I really liked the game. The visuals were nice and the music fit the game well. Level 6 was a pain in the ass but helped me to understand the game and only level 9 made me understand those buttons and gates! All in all, a very fun game!

drachmor 2017-07-31 23:50

You did an excellent job with this game! The art is pretty good, and I especially love how the caterpillars look. The music suits the game well enough, but it gets a little repetitive. This game had a pretty good balance of difficulty, but I don't see the point of the day/ night mechanic - it only makes the player wait longer to complete a level, as attempting to move during the night is useless. Overall I liked what you have here - especially because of your unique take on the theme.

johnnydalvi 2017-08-01 00:15

@internetpaulicy I'm glad you liked the art and the levels! =D I'm not very used to produce digital 2d content, I was a little afraid that it would be a total disaster.

It is intentional to make the day/night cycles affect the gameplay, although I wasn't successful at making it change the gameplay in a positive way and I should have made it clearer to the player the actual time of the day that it is.

Thank you for spending your time to play it and giving a feedback.

johnnydalvi 2017-08-01 00:32

@lazzor Thanks for playing it. I'm not very good with the tutorial/helping the player understand the games, I hope that I will get better over time xD

@drachmor Thanks for your feedback, I'm glad you liked it! I'm kind of happy with the result since it was my first LD and my second Game Jam, I will try to participate in every edition now. It was my first time producing my own sound, I was pretty lost! I found a few nice websites such as Otomata (awesome tool) that I will surely keep using. You are right regarding the day/night mechanic, the way it is on this version, it probably just gives a hard time to the player instead of improving the gameplay. If I decide to finish/polish this game I will have to rethink about it and think about how I could use it in benefit of the gameplay in a way that it doesn't damage the core game loop.

omnipotentindie 2017-08-01 02:38

This was overall a fun game. I liked how the water pools acted kind of like checkpoint, and I also liked the hand drawn art style. A few pointers: I think the day night mechanic needs to be implemented completely differently, and I often found myself waiting for day and the water pools. Also, it wasn't evident that you needed to wait at the buttons for them to activate. It was also annoying when I made it to the end, but didn't have enough water to last the 2 seconds. Maybe decrease the timing on that. Other than that, it's an over all very solid experience.

johnnydalvi 2017-08-01 02:53

@omnipotentindie Hey, thanks for your feedback. I agree with all your points, I do intend to make changes on those aspects case I keep developing this specific game (which I will probably do so). Any idea regarding implementations of the day/night mechanic?

2017-08-01 06:52

Well, it's pretty hard but I enjoyed it. And like what is said in a comment above, the day/night and cycle needs to be more obvious. :D

emil-sunesson 2017-08-01 15:39

Really sweet graphics, not super obvious what everything does.

johnnydalvi 2017-08-01 17:45

@eyeskrim I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was a little worried that people wouldn't like the graphics so I'm very happy to know that you did like it.

I Will make some changes to help the player figure out what everything does, perhaps I can add an "Exclamation mark" to things that players can interact with and even a timer to time-based mechanics, I should also add a clock and make the day/night cycles clearer. I'll then share this version here too.

binary-coder 2017-08-04 02:56

Neat idea, really felt the balance for the water/power usage. Gonna echo what some people said about the music, gets a bit repetitive :/

johnnydalvi 2017-08-04 13:47

Thank you for trying it @binary-coder !!! Totally agree, I'm very new to producing sound (first time doing the song actually), I already added some music making tutorials from Udemy to my wish-list hahaha :) Thank you for your feedback!

By the way, I've just added a newer version with a few updated elements:

vivoubos 2017-08-05 21:27

Yeah! Nice game!! That flower is so slow at night ^^

WoW that new version looks very nice (the day, night bar and the time to stay on the ground).

Good work on that game!

schuster 2017-08-06 01:43

Very nice game. The graphics are great for an LD and concept makes for a fun game.

johnnydalvi 2017-08-06 03:32

@vivoubos Thanks for your feedback! I'm glad that you liked the changes that I've done to the later version!

johnnydalvi 2017-08-06 03:33

@schuster Glad you liked, thanks for playing!

minimumentropy 2017-08-06 03:43

Nice concept. I liked the giant millipedes!

minibobbo 2017-08-06 04:20

Nicely done! The music was very subtle and the concept was nice, although simple. I really liked the overall mood and relaxed atmosphere, although sometimes that clashed with the frantic run of the sunflower from water to water.

Suggestions: - Like others have said, the day/night cycle could be a lot more pronounced. I didn't understand why I was sometimes fast and I didn't have a lot of time to take my eyes off the screen to focus on the clock. A simple graphic would be much nicer, or an icon (sun, moon) moving across the top of the screen or something. Maybe you already fixed this in the post compo.

Bugs: - Just the ones trying to eat the sunflower. Nicely done!

ledez 2017-08-06 04:27

Graphics are cool. Like the concept. I enjoyed playing this game.

mamoniem 2017-08-06 04:28

Good job, it was little confusing to understand the 2 seconds thing. But later on it became alright. I also liked the fact that you made a main menu, most of the game jams put you right away into the gameplay, but your menu and options was functional!

davidcmcdonald 2017-08-06 04:59

Goog job, a little hard to understand what to do at the start but after i got a hang of it, it was good. Great work, different concept as well

johnnydalvi 2017-08-06 09:46

@minimumentropy Thanks for playing it! Actually, the caterpillar/millipede thing is the part that I enjoyed the most doing =D

johnnydalvi 2017-08-06 09:50

@minibobbo LOL on the Bugs feedback hahaha

Thank you for such rich feedback! I did fix those features already in the post compo build, but still, I think that I should have made the levels more complexes to make full use of the mechanics in game, the day/night thing is a bit senseless in most levels due to the way I designed the levels.

johnnydalvi 2017-08-06 09:50

@ledez Thanks for playing it, I'm glad you liked the concept!

johnnydalvi 2017-08-06 09:53

@mamoniem I added the timer to make the player take more decisions regarding the day/night movement, I did add a timer to it after the compo build to make it clearer. I made a standard asset with the whole menu thing already done to use in Jams like this one, I would happily share it with anyone who asks for it.

johnnydalvi 2017-08-06 09:54

@davidcmdonald Thanks for trying it! I Totally agree regarding it being a little hard to understand at first, I need to pay more attention to making it clearer to the player what he should be doing.

aterlamia 2017-08-06 10:48

Fun little game, i had some issues with that the sunflowers was hidden behind objects that are on the floor (z index problem ? ) it did not matter for the game play that was fun enough by itself

johnnydalvi 2017-08-06 11:31

@aterlamia Thanks for the feedback, I'll double check the z on the objects on the scene to see if everything is in the right order.

I'm glad you had fun with it :D

rikoclon 2017-08-06 12:32

It was fun and the difficulty ramp was pretty well on par, until about 8 an 9. those were sadistically tough. and after awhile i gave up on 9 thinking "these devs are laughing at me". I guess it was just that the flame pits were too close to the button. it felt like luck if i got burned less than the prev try, but not less enough to get past the door and survive. running out of water is kinda a stretch on the theme. I liked the art, but felt like it was too small of resolution, it loaded quick, but you could see that the background was stretched out and the menu was very crisp. Great menu btw. Also im super proud that you made as many levels as your did! most games have 3 tops! Congrats on so many levels in so little time. Great work on the variety of enemies, again most games this jam have only one enemy sadly. I was vary happy to see variety in not only the art but the mechanics as well. Those red lady bugs were pesky! a good example of a fair challenge. those fire pits surrounded the button so close on level 9, that's an example of unfair challenge. Great work for one person! you can tell that you've put practice into your drawings and it paid of greatly here, not all programmers do that, but you made the right choice. Great job completing this on your own! really very well polished post compo.

michaeltwg 2017-08-06 12:43

Nice game, you're enemies are very sweets but it's sometime difficult to understand the boundaries of the sun flower.

johnnydalvi 2017-08-06 13:38

@rikoclon Thank you for such rich feedback, it helps a lot! I'm still crawling into digital art, I should be putting more effort into making every sprite already in the resolution that it will appear on the screen. I'm glad that you liked it for the variety, I did work a lot to bring as much variety as possible within the available time.

You are totally right regarding the unfair challenge, I should redesign most of it while having in mind what is a good challenge and what is unfair (and unfun). THank you again for your feedback and for playing it :D

johnnydalvi 2017-08-06 13:39

@michaeltwg Thank you for your input, I'll check those colliders boundaries and fix it :)

arctic-allosaurus 2017-08-09 10:39

I liked the game! Music was nice and gameplay was new and engaging. Enjoyed a lot!

johnnydalvi 2017-08-09 10:51

Thanks for trying it @arctic_allosaurus ! I'm glad you enjoyed

cttfow 2017-08-09 16:18

Overall, this is a really good entry! The game mechanic is simple yet challenging enough so that you don't get to win every level on your first try. I also enjoyed the music and the graphics were generally good (especially the UI graphics looked excellent). This is genuinely a very solid game working nicely with the theme. Great job!

johnnydalvi 2017-08-09 16:43

@cttfow thank you for your feedback! It was my first Ludum Dare, I'm glad that it went OK :D

johnnydalvi 2017-08-09 16:43

Duplicated post

codechomper 2017-08-11 18:48

I Recently played your game during a live stream at your request. [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEKsM8vugRs) .

For your first Ludum Dare you did amazing! I loved the hand drawn art style! The levels were well thought out and some of them were challenging! Thank you for entering and letting me play your game!

if you haven't already please give my game a try [Zombie Power Station](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/zombie-power-station) HTML5 Thanks

johnnydalvi 2017-08-12 04:08

Thank you for trying it @codechomper, it is very good to see other people actually playing the game, it makes easier to see which aspects we have to change in our games. I`ve just played yours too, good stuff :)

kpded 2017-08-13 14:33

The art style and sound of the game are pretty awesome!

It would be cool if the flower could kick bugs or jump) That would make the game mechanics more versatile

Good job!

johnnydalvi 2017-08-16 12:16

Thank you @kpded

Glad you liked the art style!

I thought about adding battle mechanics, but I'm not sure yet how I could do it in order to fit the gameplay.
