LD19 — Discovery

Universal Conquest by Endurion 2010-12-24T23:03:00

Took me a minute to figure out how the meter worked but once I did it was pretty good. Surprisingly easy to die since your eyes are fixated on the bottom left.

Discovering how the game world works fits with the theme so it kinda balances out the frustration :P

If this game was in Flash it would fit right in on Kongregate with other games that use the same type of progression (Shopping Cart Hero, Toss the Turtle, etc).

Unexpected Outcome by ippa 2011-01-01T20:54:00

Enjoyed the game, loved the aesthetic. Nice little narrative.

Were the knocked over weird looking chairs and weird debris around the lab a result of the experiment?

Not really familiar with Ruby, would have loved to see a timelapse of this one. I imagine you created a level editor you could paint in and play at the same time?

Very nifty.

Into the Dungeon by MoltenMustafa 2010-12-25T03:45:00

Pretty good game, nice pacing to it, not too long either.

Pretty well polished.

UNSS Pasteur - Search for a Cure by MrPhil 2010-12-25T05:54:00

Begins to get a little tedious after the 30+ planets.

Is there an alternate result to sneaking onto a hostile planet, or is it always the same?

If there was a feature that could start pointing me in the right direction this wouldn't be too shabby.

Orbs of Sound by Sakar 2011-01-01T20:07:00

I'm with endurion, I could never come across an orb either, is the environment randomly generated?

Pretty decent aesthetic for 24 hours, your first game looked like it coulda have been nifty. :P

Circus Peanuts by NMcCoy 2010-12-20T05:01:00

Love this!

The music is great, the minimalist style is perfect, great procedurally generated world.

Awesome entry!

Like the concept behind your site too :P

You must discover yourself. by Tyranus 2010-12-20T04:47:00

Nifty little game, nice art. Could have put in questions with a little more depth to push that self-discovery angle.

Good stuff :P

DisGRAVery by Spunkmeyer 2010-12-30T20:50:00

Neat concept, super challenging.

Wider radius for the guesses wouldn't be too bad, or some other mechanism to figure out when your close to the planet. Maybe your trail pulls a little towards the planet? Or even the ship itself?

Deep sea discovey by piotrekb 2011-01-01T20:18:00

Yeah, echoing the music thing for the nth time.

Sound didn't load up for me in the game anyhow.

Also echoing the hit boxes on the poison dealies.

Some nice subtle ambient music would have went great with this.

Maybe oxygen has a slow drain on it, to add a bit more difficulty.

FAILBOT by T8000 2010-12-31T23:56:00

Loving the artwork, wish you did a time lapse of it :P

Backtracking was a little painful, since all the environments are so similar, and there's no variety (go left grab item, go right, grab item, go left, repeat).

Nice little platformer though :P

Penguin! by Meep 2010-12-20T20:05:00

It's a shame you didn't have more time for this, some music would have really tied this together.

Adorable art, the thought bubbles are perfect.

discovery . Palpable Heroic Perception by HybridEidolon 2011-01-01T20:44:00

Echoing the crazy hard bits. Gotta say, thank you for adding the health regeneration.

Don't have the patience to make it all the way through, but this is nice really polished entry.

Great journal entries too :P

plUNDER by Dark Acre Jack 2010-12-26T21:53:00

Control for the diver is a little rough at that perspective, really easy to get turned around and lose the ship once you reach the bottom and start chasing after the angler fish :P

Nifty aesthetic, interesting gameplay. Wasn't a big fan of the music :P

Dey See Me Fallin' by zhennTil 2010-12-30T20:15:00

Echoing earlier sentiments the intro was a great start to some interactive fiction. Really impressive use of effects to establish atmosphere. Awesome stuff.

This entry may have even been better without the "game" tacked on at the end. Awesome intro and lackluster game make it hard to rate :P

Trip (n.) - an exciting or unusual experience (source: Merriam-Webster) by ThatSnail 2011-01-02T07:01:00

Nice music for the game, good visuals.

Controls were a little cludgy, after rocket jumping I ended up outside the level, got a few errors from the flash debugger.

Good job on the timelapse, but toss some music in there :P

Great job on your first LD :P

Fog of War by jcurrie33 2011-01-02T05:59:00

Really neat unique concept.

Echoing the too random sentiments. Dominant strategy seems to be, reveal enough to harvest 4 trees, build fences around castle, hope monsters randomly wander off, grab gold.

Good stuff!

Fate of Mankind by LegacyCrono 2011-01-13T15:19:00

Awesome job, love the minimalist style, good pacing, best ending out of all the games I've played this LD.

1492Island by Valandre 2011-01-02T06:14:00

Neat mechanics, cute graphics, complete game.

Really good stuff, a little music and maybe a roll over chart for strengths, weaknesses and life expectancy for each character and it'd be good enough to toss up on Kongregate.

Great job for your first LD :P

Into the brain by Hane 2010-12-24T23:09:00

Not too bad for your first game.

The art is a little rough on the eyes. I assumed the screen that came up was just a screenshot of your game, ended up downloading the source to try it out, ha.

Assimilation 4X by Falcon256 2010-12-30T20:39:00

Awesome entry. Nice pace for progression, just the right level of difficulty.

Very Lonely In A Spaceship by tusongtupa 2011-01-01T20:23:00

Man, should have gave the earlier guys a hint! "Bring up the console..."

Neat concept but unfinished. Would have loved to read a post-mortem on this one.

Very Lonely In A Spaceship by tusongtupa 2011-01-01T20:24:00

Oh, liked seeing someone playing social games during their timelapse :P

DEATHWISH by Alexbrainbox 2010-12-20T04:56:00

I was a baby, needed to use the walk through :P

Cute little game. With a little bit of polish it'd get some laughs on Kongregate.

Discovery Shuttle Defender by FatherGoblin 2011-01-01T00:14:00

Don't know if it works for everyone but even if your bat file is just

java discovery

Not too bad for the time you spent on it.

Discover19 by Suyo 2010-12-20T04:53:00

Nice simple scope.

Fun, doesn't run too long.

Unfathomed by kylerhoades 2011-01-01T20:32:00

I'd definitely change how the camera works, a little ambient music would have made the exploration a little less monotonous.

Found the doctor, no sign of the black creature though. After I realized that the level just wraps around on the left and right sides I gave up :P

Nifty game for ten hours :P

It's A Frickin' CAVE by Hempuli 2010-12-20T04:36:00

Awesome little roguelike. The little fog of war turns this from good to great!

Everything fits really well together, fully realized little idea. Loved your timelapse as well. Can't believe you got this done after restarting in the middle. Guess I'll have to look at MMF :P

Quarters by Terry 2010-12-20T04:10:00

Fun fully realized entry. Wish I had other folks to test it out with.

Cute style, like the castle spawning effect.

Awesome scope, and execution considering you started on Saturday.

Loved VVVVVV :P

LD20 — It's Dangerous to Go Alone! Take This!

Thank You Hobo by Chris Zamanillo 2011-05-23T08:23:00

Fun game, loved your post-mortem, excellent points on LD themes.

Clone Wolf by jarnik 2011-05-18T18:14:00

Ugh I guess the three wolf moon shirt fits with the game.

Awesome graphics. Gameplay got a little repetitive, but the concept/story is fun.

The updated non-compo version seems a bit more frustrating, between enemies coming up behind you and having to charge the coin.

Good stuff!

Don't Go Alone by pgil 2011-05-16T03:09:00

Favorite LD game so far.

You absolutely nailed the aesthetic (both the retro bit, and atmosphere). Great execution. Having the shots slowly switch over was a nice touch.

Simple, solid atmosphere, nice little plot. This is the game I wish I would have made.

Throwbots by Cirrial 2011-05-02T17:03:00

Fun game, had to restart it twice(pushed to the start room by first elevator and like Daniel). A suicide button would have been handy.

Definitely some potential in the mechanic. Cute story, nice art(can't believe you were dogging yourself for it in your journal).

A nice chiptune would really set the mood and tone for the game.

Good stuff!

Elidia by brandoncash 2011-05-16T02:49:00

The voice made it!

Nice twist on the move "mouse to dodge stuff" genre.

Myrktorch by gugugu 2011-05-16T02:17:00

Great job. Love the aesthetic and colour palette. Even though I died a few times getting into it, it wasn't frustrating, even without checkpoints. Good stuff!

My little selling shop on Earth by allinlabs 2011-05-19T06:39:00

Hit the bug too : /

Sweet art and parralax scrolling, good stuff!

Innocence by LegacyCrono 2011-05-23T09:22:00

I feel like this isn't getting enough love.

The real genius here is the point/health system(losing at least 10K each time you're hit) and the highscore table.

Bullet hell games are hard to tweak for a wide audience, but the synergy between those two features really put this game over the top. Great stuff!

The Heart is Safe by intmain 2011-05-23T06:36:00

One of my favorite entries this LD. Nice, simple and polished.

Usually not a big fan of avoidance games, but THIS is just the right amount of forgiving. Great AI, the art, audio and gameplay fit together extremely well. Can't wait to see this up on a portal.

Zom-key-bot-calypse by LiquidAsh 2011-05-16T01:28:00

Woo for putting together an XNA game :P Also bonus points for tossing it together as a Silverlight title!

A tutorial splash would have helped. And I wasn't quite sure about the small belt pouch with my items in it as well.

Also, I guess as a ninja I'd want to kill everything? Especially with such a cast of killable antagonists :P Just from a thematic stand point as well, you don't expect a ninja to be so immobile and without attacks.

Definitely an interesting concept if elaborated on.

Furious Fighting Felines by ACodeGerm 2011-05-02T15:00:00

Bah, I should have noticed this when I submitted. Without "http://" nothing registered as a link.

Thanks!

Pathfinder by Jimjam 2011-05-02T17:12:00

There really aren't enough games that use the mouse like this (made me think of the old slap the monkey flash game).

Collision/speed on the main character were a little painful.

Pretty good for a "learning AS3" game!

Better You Than ME! by lingmops 2011-05-19T09:01:00

Awesome execution on the cloning concept! A reset button would be great for when you occasionally get stuck

A few more obstacles that discourage clone spam would be a really nice add.

With a little polish(and fancy music) this would totally be up there with Robot Unicorn and Canabalt.

A Steampunk Axebot Supply Run by matthias_zarzecki 2011-05-19T08:53:00

Loving the concept! As is it's relatively painful. But this would be a perfect Kongregate game with an upgrade system tossed in(pay for a fuel upgrade, buy rocket brakes or thrusters, buy an entire map refuel, buy some combat aids for axe bots, etc).

As far as the profit goes, I wouldn't worry about making rockets cost anything for the player to fire. This is pretty bare bones, and it's already hard enough to keep track of everything thats going on (steambots health + their location + trying to get to them). Just basing the profit off of the amount of health the bots have at the end of the level seems like it would fit.

Very nifty, hoping something comes out of this :P

Boomerang ! by Nuz 2011-05-16T02:26:00

Odd that I'm the only one getting this problem, but once I get to the third screen it seems as if the screen buffer stops clearing.

Yay for the timelapses!

Lonely Fortress by Winterblood 2011-05-02T16:37:00

Neat concept, but the mouse look killed it for me too.

The Efreet really makes this!

Not sure if all unity web based browser games do this, but a minor gripe.

Loaded up your game in a seperate tab while waiting for it to finish loading. Forgot about it and came back to my pc to see my cursor was missing (Unity loading in an inactive tab up and hid my cursor on both monitors).

Pitch In by cambrian_era 2011-05-16T03:35:00

Nice and polished, neat mechanic to put together within a jam. Hope you toss this up on a portal somewhere!

Congrats on your first LD!

Wait For Me by gibble 2011-05-23T23:18:00

Glad you included the source :P

Danger at US Robotics by rgbDreamer 2011-05-16T02:01:00

Can't run the exe : /

LD #20 - Never Let Go, Sam! by chamberlainpi 2011-05-23T23:17:00

Good job on your first LD :P

If only you fixed that loading issue. Fancy art!

Officer Alfred by Hempuli 2011-05-23T07:33:00

Mmm, very nifty puzzles. Great aesthetic. Only game so far that I've tagged with five stars for innovation.

Amazing for 48 hours.

SpaceJump by 1009 2011-05-16T02:37:00

Nice aesthetic. Love how non sequitur it all is.

Had some weird graphical tearing occasionally.

LD22 — Alone

Will I always be Mollone? by Catmoo 2012-01-02T03:27:00

Cute, simple, short and sweet.

Fancy art.

Are We Alone? by Fiona 2011-12-25T13:57:00

Heart breaking...

After a few rough starts I was finally on my way to clearing out all of the solar systems easily. With only two solar systems left, I hop into one of them.

"Oh hey, I'm basically on top of a planet *click*. Save a tiny bit of fuel..."

The ship then circled the planet until I ran out of fuel.

Nice concept, pretty well explored, great flavour. Probably the best "Mood" of any of the games so far, along with being the best entry I've played.

Would make a rocking little Flash game.

Run Justin, Run by cptalbertwesker 2012-01-01T22:15:00

Cute art, yay for track and field.

A.I.one by Toeofdoom 2012-01-03T00:04:00

Love the music, really sets the tone, definitely the stand out feature.

How to tell if you're progressing is a bit of a pain. Also spawning in the middle of a bunch of defense drones sucks : / Combat could be fleshed out a bit better.

Really nice foundation for a game, I'd definitely play a more complete version of this.

Super Smash Lander Suicide Party, Bro? by Black Ships Fill the Sky 2012-01-02T20:24:00

Love the graphics!

Great complete package, controls are a little confusing at first, you give the player lots of leeway. Aside from Borking the theme, this is a pretty awesome entry! Great first LD!

Solitude by ACodeGerm 2011-12-20T13:08:00

@Toeofdoom

Good point. Just updated the description. Forgot to warn everyone that there's no preloader.

Solitude by ACodeGerm 2011-12-20T20:41:00

@binarycoder

Should be fixed now.

Bomb Defuse by Kaphonaits 2011-12-25T17:54:00

I was promised a soundtrack of the year...

Alone in Red-F Labs by Sempai 2011-12-24T16:34:00

Like the concept, needs a little more variety in terms of the enemies. Crashed three times for me, never managed to find a weapon.

Soulroom by Kakset 2011-12-25T18:07:00

Great first game :P Played through for the different story branches.

Neat little piece of IF for a Ludum Dare.

Viking Cricket on the High Seas by twistedjoe 2011-12-25T18:12:00

Oh man, the controls got the better of me.

Like the concept though. Maybe once hitting the max charge for the flashlight, it doesn't lose it's charge so soon? Between recharging it and managing the controls, ack!

Snowfall by Guns_Are_Toys 2011-12-24T16:36:00

"Could not find the main class: Snowfall. Program will exit."

That title screen looks intriguing though : /

Solitude-76 by code_glitch 2011-12-24T16:41:00

Same problem bach had, except I don't know if the intro was fine for me, I get a count down and all I see is "Is Waiting"

Leave me alone by ghostonline 2011-12-24T17:21:00

Neat concept, would make a nice little flash game.

You Don't Need To Be Alone by SusanTheCat 2012-01-05T05:52:00

Went on for a beat too long, but it's an ambitious idea. Like the concept of mini-games interspersed between dating sim sequences. Wait... You had an army of kids working on a dating sim?

A post-mortem of this might be neat. What your plans would be for a full scope version of this game + spoiling the other endings :P

No One Left by SuperSausageDog 2012-01-02T06:46:00

Nice concept, not a big fan of Knytt style games, but this was short and sweet.

Nice twist at the end :P

Apollo Kepler-22b by David Colson 2012-01-02T06:33:00

First impression "Exploring terrain, the 3D equivalent of a 2D platformer". So I was happy to see the second level.

Lots of effort, fits the theme really well, good mood.

And don't listen to them, the difficulty is fine. One of the only 3D games so far I could play comfortably with a touchpad.

Dig Dig Dig! by Rijida 2011-12-25T03:10:00

Echoing EatThePath's comments.

As someone who's making a mining game in the style of motherload/miner dig deep/miner VGA (Coincidently also named Dig Dig Dig! :P). I've got a ton of love for the genre too.

Slashing the goal will do a great deal to improve the game. Adding another mechanic around the midway point would be great to help break up tedium a little bit too.

Spent a bunch of time boosting out in space hoping for an ending :P

Run Away by Dax 2011-12-22T14:31:00

Clever gameplay, good level design. Reminds me of a masochistic Tiny Hawk.

Definitely put this out on mobile, maybe slow it down a tad. With cleaned up graphics this would also be better than a lot of the XBLIG games too.

L'Joe Locked in his Basement...Alone with his imagination by Alexander The 1st 2012-01-02T06:16:00

Pretty rough.

I'd suggest avoiding using tweens for your movement in AS3. Just work on changing the .x and .y values using your own logic.

Head South by MurrayL 2012-01-10T00:58:00

Great audio, nice aesthetic.

I'm torn. Not a fan of the gameplay at all, but it does nail the theme very well.

Alone in the Crane by evilindiegames 2012-01-05T05:00:00

Ouch, I'm glad I didn't get such a sour first post... At least hit him with some constructive criticism.

For those complaining about this not being innovative or comparing it to an earlier LD entry from this year. Check out Tuper Tario Tros. from 2009. It's an awesome Tetris/Platformer experiment, goes beyond just using the Tetrominos as platforms, and includes Tetris gameplay! It was also a precursor to Blocks That Matter.

The More You Know *

I'm really curious as to where this will fall for innovation in the ranking...

As far as this game goes...

The graphics might look great, but the changes you make to the lighting make the game ugly. Visually, something is off about the colour scheme, maybe someone more artsy than I, can put their finger on it.

Controls are awkward and involved, maybe consider doing something similar to Tuper Tario Tros. and swap between game modes. That might also help with the awkward camera once the tower gets too tall.

Would have loved to see a post-mortem on this. Technically it's a fully realized idea, but everything "off" just enough to sap the game of it's "fun".

Awesome little jam game with a bit of flair, humour, and a nice spin on platformer genre. With some polish and a few more features this would be a fun little time waster.

Alone by Lilleman 2012-01-09T22:11:00

Didn't get the gun until I died and restarted.... very confusing....

You Only Help Yourself by KevinZuhn 2011-12-25T12:58:00

Gave up after I got a game maker error, when "blockifying" one of the starting characters. I think I triggered it because a few particles from the end of a beam hit one of the characters, then I hit him with a new beam while he was transforming.

Neat concept, very cute for your first LD. The controls are a pain though : /
