Pretty amazing game ! It's fun and super hard. Having the leaderboard is awesome as a motivation to improve. Visuals and sounds are great. My only complain would be that inspiration from Devil Daggers are a bit too visible. Great work !

geckoo1337 2017-04-24 19:10

Thank you for your kind words. It's true. All my apologies :) When I started this project, I had in head this game which you quoted. When the theme has been announced, I challenged myself in order to do something more or less similar in a small world ++

takusan 2017-04-25 14:40

Awesome! I like it, plays really well, and leaderboard is a nice touch. Good mechanics, creepy feeling.

One downside: 'r' restarts game... and I'm used to hit 'r' every time there's no need for shooting to reload. I do it automatically, so you know how this ends :D

Could I ask you how you got that camera shader working, or is it a secret? I was trying to do something similar, but failed miserably.

Cheers!

geckoo1337 2017-04-25 19:29

Thank you Takusan. Effectivelly, I use R to restart game, but generally this is the key to reload. Maybe I could use another one. To display this aesthetic I use a shader which posterizes colors with a few shades. Also it pixelates the screen using a pattern according contrast ++

PS : your score is not bad :)

takusan 2017-04-25 22:48

@geckoo1337 Well to be honest I somehow got a bit hooked. Since the movement reminds me of first Quake, I felt a bit nostalgic, and the scoreboard really puts it into perspective. All in all I played for at least half an hour total so far, and I kinda like it as a quick break from other things I do. So, well done, and I'll be waiting for an updated version if you decide to make one :D

king-kujito 2017-04-28 19:27

Very nice aesthetic! This is an absolutely handsome game ;-)

liquidbrain 2017-04-29 18:32

The most visually pleasing game we’ve played so far. Isak is a big fan of oldschool games and he thinks you’ve really captured that feeling. The leaderboard is a nice addition. We had a fun time playing this one and gave it multiple tries to reach a better score. Have an awesome day and hope to see you in the next jam!

*(We'll be back again on Sunday when the judging starts)*

hadik 2017-05-01 12:46

Like old school Heretic game :) Nice entry :)

takusan 2017-05-01 13:16

I've added rating in addition to my earlier feedback. Cheers!

zenmumbler 2017-05-01 13:16

I have to ask, did you make all the sfx, models, music, etc. yourself? If so, then that is an amazing achievement. If not, consider opting out of the respective voting categories.

BTW, I have to ask because the whole product looks very nice, so I hope you take it as a compliment ;)

If you modelled it yourself, which modelling software do you use? Mostly curious.

Assuming you made the game with Unity, can you also make a macOS build available? Thanks in advance.

gerardb 2017-05-01 13:34

Super cool graphics! Super cool gameplay. I like devil daggers and I enjoyed this!

those-30-ninjas 2017-05-01 13:40

I really like the shader, nice little game. Check ours out if you get a chance https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/down-the-rabbit-hole

koemeterion 2017-05-01 15:53

Fun game with cool graphics. All i can say about the game is an "Hell yeah!". The only thing to "criticize" is the one-pressed-space but double-jump. I dont know why this happen.

Great entry!

geckoo1337 2017-05-01 18:27

@koemeterion - you can do a single double-jump in game. It's true, but it doesn't allow some bunny jump. Maybe I should do something more conventionnal. Thank you all for your kind words. I will rate your projects as I promised ++

stanislav 2017-05-01 20:51

AbadDOOM =)

artylo 2017-05-01 21:00

I'm terribly sorry, this game is good, it looks great, it sounds fine and it handles well, but this is Devil Daggers. From the hand, to the skulls, to the small map, through to to the slight dithering on the graphics. I can't give you a good rating for that. You apparently have the skills and the knowledge, just put them to good use in something else, not something that is already made and published.

jeremy-ryan 2017-05-01 21:05

Interesting game, I had a lot of fun with it. It felt really dark, but unfortunately the audio didn't necessarily match with the *twinkle*'s and the *pewpewpew*'s. The assets you used were really good, overall well done. Impressive for 72 hrs.

jeremy-ryan 2017-05-01 21:06

And apparently asterisks italicize. Nice to know.

spaceman 2017-05-01 21:23

This played really well. I think it could benefit from a bit more variety in enemies to encourage choosing targets while strafing. I found the game to be quite challenging, which is cool.

epicsoft 2017-05-01 21:26

Good game, really need to be hard-core. Story is quite good too

breno-m 2017-05-01 21:40

I'm not a fan of retro visual style in general, but the gameplay is addicting. The leaderboard is a really nice addition for the replay value. But as shoot while walking backwards, I fell from the map. It's a small world, huh? :p

schizoid2k 2017-05-02 00:14

Nice creepy vibe... fun to play.

listonos 2017-05-02 01:41

You have captured the atmosphere of old-school first person shooter incredibly. It is fast-paced, action packed, and the art is amazing as well. Well done. I would prefer larger view distances but hey, I hate horrors :)

red-fan-games 2017-05-02 01:46

A devil daggers clone.

swamphen 2017-05-02 08:47

This is a really cool devil daggers clone, I did fall off the world thought which wasn't great. Super impressed by the graphics and everything for LD!

garethiw 2017-05-02 08:55

This was fun to play, and I loved that it has online scores! Great work on the visual effects.

I echo @zenmumbler though in that you should indicate if you used assets or not. If you made the models and music yourself, then it is indeed a great achievement.

flukeshot 2017-05-02 09:27

That shader is pretty sweet. The models look and move great. Overall it is a nice little package as an LD game.

huvaakoodia 2017-05-02 09:56

This is a technically impressive entry, although the excessive transparency in the projectile particle effect tanks my frames on higher settings.

Designwise you are on much weaker ice. It is very similar to Devil Daggers in style and idea, yet falls short on the gameplay front. The shotgun attack is way too weak to be of any use and simply circle strafing around enemies is more than enough for a competent score. There is no incentive to stop, collect the health pickups or try any daring jumps amidst the enemies. You'll just get hit.

Ok entry this. Too much of a clone for my taste. Some sort of a unique gimmick could have saved it.

gagapete 2017-05-02 10:51

The screenshots are looking awesome. I'd love to throw myself into battle but sadly I can't due to the lack of a Web- or Linux-build. I understand that this is not always possible so nontheless congrats to a awesome looking game. :penguin:

nnnnneeeedddd 2017-05-02 22:17

Nice, I really like devil daggers, and I really like this, rated very high. It looks very nice, good fast gameplay, the leaderboard made me want to keep playing, although I only got up to 34th (i think).

Thanks,

Ned

jojocanard 2017-05-03 11:51

Very well done. Great mood all around with various ennemies. Classic but effective gameplay.

++ nice to have a leaderboard.

Did you really create all those ennemies on your own ? If yes this is really impressive.

sagarpatel25700 2017-05-03 17:15

- Till know this is the most fun playing game that i have played - I was scared for a second when i turned back and skull came with scary sound on my head phone - Well i managed to score 1354 - Sound effect is pretty impressive - would you like sharing how did you created that effect when player moves forward darkens fade gradually ?????

dragojt 2017-05-03 19:45

Wow, awesome job if you made in in 72 hours. The graphics are so cool, I would like to know more about it.

It's so cool but the theme failed a bit for my opinion :)

chunkybrewster 2017-05-03 23:44

A little bit too similar to Devil Daggers, but looks pretty nice for a clone.

cassio-eduardo 2017-05-04 00:05

Not a original concept nor does it add or improve the genre (or Devil Daggers) in any way. Nice try though.

masterkrepta 2017-05-04 01:21

The shader effect is really cool. It's not quite retro and not quite modern but more of an artsy version of the two. I almost wish the world was endless, without a platform you can walk off of in the heat of battle. The lighting suggests it at first but I understand the need to prevent the player to simply run backward forever to escape

kunonooni 2017-05-04 01:34

I'd never heard of devil daggers before and looked it up. Ok so I can see some similarity between your game and this devil daggers game but so what? I was very impressed by the game, I kept playing to get a better score. I made 21st, I'm happy with that. I assumed you used some shaders to make the dithering of the light? It looked awesome. The game is definitely hardcore, and I like that! Clone or not, this is by far one of the best Jam games I've played!

pyokoanarogue 2017-05-04 01:47

What a lovely game, just lovely (also i had never seen myself on a leader board ,so ,thanks for that ). spiders seem to take a bit to die (meaning death animation, not damage amount) at first but one learns. keep on jamming!

squatch 2017-05-04 02:19

Played this probably a week ago, but have decided to come back to comment. I love scoreboards; I don't think enough games have them. My only complaint is that the collision can be wonky at times.

Abaddon is what actually made me find devil daggers; I really do like this kind of genre.

mylenna-geovana 2017-05-04 12:08

Nice art game man

please rate us https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/deep-bottom

fueelin 2017-05-04 19:59

Awesome game! Loved the graphics/art style and had a lot of fun playing it. Much hopping and holding down of LMB and RMB (it is kind of weird that you can hold both down at once and use both weapons without affecting one another, but not as weird as Duke Nukem spamming kicks with both legs at once, if we're talking about 90s shooters).

tat2tim 2017-05-04 21:38

This is amazing, easily one of my favorites of the Jam so far. I generally don't like FPS games, but you really hooked me in with the art style. VERY high marks.

anudin 2017-05-04 21:45

It would have been great to have an arena like level or maybe a maze so you don't have to check all directions constantly. But honestly that's the only thing I can add - besides that the game is gorgious! The art style has some heavy retro vibes and goes really well with music and sound effects. Generally speaking the atmosphere was very dense - and that is an amazing thing to achieve especially in such a short time! You did a great job here.

geck0 2017-05-04 23:48

I like the retro aspect. Good job "nick-mate" ;)

james-dunlap 2017-05-05 03:31

Very well done. I really like the shader effect that you used. The game also ramps well in difficulty as, at first, I am only facing one enemy at a time, but then start getting overwhelmed. This, visually, is likely the most innovative game that I have seen in this LD yet.

lucas-ferrantelli 2017-05-05 08:31

Retro game, 3d, hardcore, everything in your game make me love it :D Nice dude

toccio94 2017-05-05 09:12

Loved the style!

fpwong 2017-05-05 10:27

Finally got to posting a review of your game. Saw one of your progress videos when the competition was still going on and thought had similar concepts, and we did! My game [is here](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/masked) in case you want to check it out, but we both had the whole fps, restricted view kinda thing going. I really like the retro graphics and the whole arcadey yet tense atmosphere. Good stuff~

dom-harris 2017-05-05 11:49

I quite like the effect, and the options at the beginning were nice to see. Have a go at [my game](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/pixelworld) and tell me what you think!

ashtheevil 2017-05-05 12:23

What a style! The game is hard and ai behavior is various, which is realy cool for a jam entry. Great job! 5 stars!

thomz12 2017-05-05 13:22

Cool game, but like others mentioned it looks way too much like devil daggers, would have liked to see a different twist to it. Still, very impressive and well done!

spinaljack 2017-05-05 13:28

Good recreation of Devil Daggers but where's the giant centipede?

alex-hart 2017-05-05 13:50

Hmm what is Devil Daggers?

dennyrocketdev 2017-05-05 15:14

I am torn here. The game is obviously good for 72 hours. It's fun, it's polished, the effects are nice, the sound is decent, the leaderboard is a nice touch - pretty much everything is good.

The downside is that it is an obvious Devil Daggers clone and Devil Daggers is far better by every objective comparison you can make. Devil Daggers is faster, feels better, has better feedback for actions, has better audio design, the game design has waaay more depth and clarity and, in general, it is just a far better game.

Of course I understand that you made this in 72 hours and Devil Daggers had far more time, but if you make a clone, you have to at least make a better game - regardless of the time you spent on it.

So I guess I can give you high ratings for some categories like graphics and mood, which are fantastic, and have to lower the score for those where Devil Dagger just outperforms your game.

samlo 2017-05-05 15:59

Someone likes Devil Daggers ;) fun entry! If you keep working on it, try smoothing out the WASD movement, it's a bit sticky atm

morrilet 2017-05-05 18:23

Final score: 1435.

This was really fun. Reminds me of Doom. The graphics were really cool, and really set the mood. The upbeat music and effects really got me pumped to slay some shit. I think my biggest gripe with this one is that it's really tough to see where the edge is sometimes. I haven't seen Devil Daggers, so it's new(ish) to me! But yeah. Fun gameplay, good mood, good level of polish. This was a solid entry. Nice work.

automatonvx 2017-05-05 19:59

Cool graphics effects, nice overall atmosphere. Liked the fact that your leaderboard has 100 places so there was space for even people that suck at this type of game. And nice touch that you include mouse sensitivity and FOV for the motions sickness prone. I knows its blasphemy but controller support would have been nice too. Solid

gamechoy 2017-05-05 20:20

Got to the top 25! This game is really hard, but in a good way. The graphics and atmosphere are perfect for the feel you're going for, and the gameplay is tight and responsive. The few things I didn't like are the view range, and how shooting tended to lag the game a bit. Other than that you've got a really solid entry here. Great work!

ithildin 2017-05-06 01:18

Loved the game. While I can understand other people's complaints about the obvious inspiration (which IMHO should only affect the innovation score and to some extent the overall as well) I think that dissing the whole game because of this is a bit unfair to the work you've put on it.

The execution is very solid, and no surprise here, the shader effect in particular looks great. Gameplay is fun and I think the idea fits the theme. Congrats!

funkensteins-monster 2017-05-06 06:28

This is really good and I really like the art. Really missed the bunny hop from devil daggers though. Nice job!

jakob-willforss 2017-05-06 06:55

Impressive entry - One of the best visuals I have seen this Ludum Dare. Also tight and addictive gameplay, with highscore and leaderboard as a nice motivator for replay. Got a bit repetitive after a while (run in a circle, while frenetically shooting), but I think there still is a nice variation with different types of enemies spawning in after some time. I enjoyed this one, thanks!

guitarbro 2017-05-06 07:28

Not bad, the mood is excellent and the visual style is nice an consistent. My biggest complaint is knowing where enemies are coming from (perhaps a 3D audio source could help with this?) as it's easy to accidentally back into another enemy and take damage. The leader board is also a nice touch.

(ps: if you've got some time you should check out our game) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/roguelike-one

turncoda 2017-05-06 07:35

I love this graphic style, it's a very nice touch. These monsters and animations are very impressive! I rarely see well-done 3D animations in LD, so this is very cool.

I like that you implemented a variety of enemy AI to encourage a certain behavior from the player. I had fun learning how to deal with each kind of enemy.

I didn't really like the feel of the movement in this game. When I pressed D for a short period of time, my player character would move right for longer than I held down the key. This stickiness made it feel a bit unwieldy. Perhaps I would get used to it after playing for a while.

zebrainflames 2017-05-06 08:48

The audio and graphics are top notch, especially liked the shader effect used. Others have compared this to Devil's daggers, but I don't really care about such comparisons. However, I don't quite see how this fits the theme?

The level of polish and production values are very impressive though - keep it up!

udo 2017-05-06 08:50

I have to admit something upfront: I usually don't rate games that use pre-made assets, because I honestly don't know where to draw the line between what was done for LD and what came from somewhere else. Several comments here seem to suggest that hunch was correct. Again, this is not because I'm super critical, it's just because I have difficulties judging these entries fairly.

*However*, after reading the disclaimer, I now have a way better understanding of what @Geckoo1337 created here, and it's exceptionally good. The gameplay is fast and snappy, well paced, and the shader is just perfect. Kudos also for the sound and the general atmosphere, very well done! <3

pschichtel 2017-05-06 12:30

Sadly no Linux version :/

nickzangus 2017-05-06 13:49

Great graphics and mood! The difficulty raise very quickly (but I think it's normal for a ludum dare game in order to engage the player more rapidly). If you have intention to work on the game in the future, consider to add some kind of weapons or magic spell, it would be great!

teslov 2017-05-06 17:39

Fun! It's also looking extremely good for a game made in 72 hours. Shaders are really boosting the mood here.

I'm currently on 26th place after my first try.

le-slo 2017-05-06 19:21

Amazing! Very good game feel and very disturbing monsters. The only thing I want to comment is the shooting sound a bit too digital for the mood you are building and after some time its kind of annoying, for saying something. Congratulations!

kroute 2017-05-06 19:23

Wow that's a very cool game. I especially like the controls that are very responsive which creates a very nervous gameplay.

martenscedric 2017-05-06 19:49

Great mood and great graphics! Good work! The controls are really nice, sadly my computer does not seem to handle shooting that well.

creamybacon2 2017-05-07 04:40

I had fun with the game, but I just wanted to punch something the whole time! The shotgun was a good alternative though. Good Job.

linus 2017-05-07 17:59

This game was awesome, it felt like a real shooter game and felt very polished for only 72 hours. It was a fast-paced quite hard game but very fun. On my computer it lagged a bit but maybe I should have turned the quality setting down a bit. I especially like the graphics and music which gives a scary game. The shader you created for this game was really cool and that was quite innovative.

The controls also works well and the ability to tweak the sensitivity was a great feature. I don't really have too much to critize here, you created an awesome game.

Providing a Linux and mac version for your games would be much appreciated in the future. Excellent job!

@pschichtel I was able to get it running on Linux using Wine.

rpmoura 2017-05-07 22:47

I really liked the graphics and gameplay on this, but I don't really feel there's a connection with the theme and unintentionally or not it's quite similar, both in story and gameplay, to Devil Daggers.

xxdoombox 2017-05-09 22:11

hey great game! i really like the shader that you made, its awesome! the visual appeal of this game is a strong feature. the mood is also very good. it was dark and creepy, you actually feel a certain level of anticipation/fear when the giant spiders are rearing their legs up at you! i also enjoyed the screaming guy sound effect ha. my one criticism is that since enemies chase you, it is natural to run backwards away from them while shooting and i tended to fall of the edge of the map as it is rather small. maybe you made this decision to keep with the small world theme, which i understand, but it took away from gameplay. overall i had a lot of fun playing this game, nice work!

thelonelynug 2017-05-09 23:28

I rated this very high because well..you deserve it. This takes me back to the days of playing Hexen on my fathers computer and I have had an itch to play a game like that for a long time; unfortunately, it hasn't happened but I'm so glad I got to experience this. This game hit me in the feels so hard especially with the atmosphere. Please continue developing this. I would actually probably buy this.

powerspark 2017-05-11 03:51

This was a neat entry, great 3D animations and models. I played a few times but couldn't ever pass my first score... I thought having to constantly look around for enemies was a little annoying for me. I saw a maze suggestion which I would agree with to fix the all directions problem. The enemy types were nice but I feel like they were put to waste because the spawn rate ramps up so quickly that I just had to frantically run around and hope not to run into something I can't see... there might as well have been a bunch of skulls I had to sift through. This would probably be fixed by making the gun damage (especially the shotgun) viable, because it was hard enough to deal with one enemy. Nice entry.

fangzhangmnm 2017-05-11 07:01

Exciting gameplay and graphics fits the mood. It's a small world because you are shrinked in the lights. Good job

Wanna multiplayer support

max-amaden 2017-05-11 16:43

Really nice game! Fun, fast gameplay, nicely polished, and the public leaderboard is an awesome touch.

As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't really matter if it's similar to another game; you should be proud that you managed to pull off such a great technical feat in such a small amount of time - that's what Ludum Dare's all about!

All in all, really love your game... and I wish I could make shaders as well as you can ;)

**Keep up the good work!**

vidinu 2017-05-12 00:18

Technically astonishing to be a Ludum Dare. Congratulations sir!

quoclon 2017-05-12 02:20

Awesome. Graphics were stunning. I don't know how you got the effect but it was super cool. The projectiles felt nice shooting them, but wish the burst shot had a bit more oompf. The learning curve seemed good, though the goat skulls felt like the only ones doing real damage to me. Honestly, the leaderboards were an amazing touch. Overall good addition.

Would love if you were able to provide some feedback on my game:

behenate 2017-05-13 08:35

Awesome! Very polished and addicting gameplay, one of the coolest graphic effects I've seen in my life! Leaderboard is very cool and adds competition element. I have nothing bad to say! I think it is my favourite LD #38 game yet! 10/10!

hellsquirrel 2017-05-13 08:43

Очень годно, напомнило немного Ziggurat, очень классная графика!

Если не сложно, то оцени и нас

pascalman 2017-05-13 08:58

I'm don't have Windows but game looks great. Clone or not clone is not important, for jam it's normal. You made game by yourself and it the best. Especially if it really your idea. Good job!

cerno-b 2017-05-15 18:37

Devil Daggers! I suck at this type of game, although I love a good challenge. I got to 2700 points (probably not that good). Overall I am awed by the level of polish you offer. The graphics are outstanding and the shader you use make the game visually unique. The details on the models are awesome!

The music is pumping and giving the game the urgency this genre is begging for.

Gameplay wise there is not much to criticize, I like the general mechanics, especially the healing clouds as they create a point of attraction that is usually surrounded by danger, which creates a very good risk/reward balance.

The only minor nitpick would be that the game could have a slightly tighter difficulty curve. I feel that until right before the first spiders appear, the game could pick up its pace a tiny bit faster, which I think would improve the replay value and increase the already good "just one more round"-feeling.

All in all certainly one of the big greats of this LD!

I wouldn't worry too much about the similarity to DD though. There are so many clones of popular games at LD. Sure, it would have been nice if you had added some new twist to the game, maybe something more closely tied to the theme "A Small World", but for me, it's not a big problem. Your game is fun in its own right, and I'm pretty sure, Devil Daggers has not been made in three days.

dejvo 2017-05-16 07:12

Really intense game with great graphics. but is there an end goal, or is it just shooty bang bang for no reason? because I would like to have a goal and health regeneration. other than that, really great entry and I am perticularry impressed by the graphics that you've managed to get done in this short amount of time

dejvo 2017-05-16 19:27

Thanks on commenting on my game!

Sorry for not reading but it's too long and not structured and I have dyslexia and to read the description of all games kindof hurts me in a weird way. And I like to just go into games no knowing anything and figuring everything by myself. It's more fun that way and you get to test the intuitivness of the game's control system

Anyway, I thought the blue dust might do something, but I could never get to it because there were enemies surrounding me.

P.S. I don't mean to be ungrateful or rude, but did you rate my game? I saw your comment but no increase in ratings. maybe it's a bug. sorry.

harry-alissavakis 2017-05-16 20:44

Dangerously close to Devil Daggers but it doesn't matter; it's still a great game! Fast paced, fun, with really interesting graphics and great audio. What else can one ask from a game?! I really like the whole aesthetic with the post processing, as well as the models. You also had some really great animations going on there, which was very much appreciated! Overall, this game was really well made, very polished and an amazing entry for this jam. Well done! :D

P.S. Thank you for the Wihelm scream sound effect on dying, it made my deaths way more enjoyable :P

ianmorrison 2017-05-17 00:32

I love the way the monsters look; the filter you're running to posterize the colours is really doing the trick. My favourite would have to be the spiders.

Gameplay feels rock solid and chaotic. A lot of getting blindsided by enemies, but I think that's just the kind of game it is!

Nice work, really good mood setup for the game.

Long ago put a rating to your game, good luck in the contest!

That is just amazing. Very good graphics with a very nice pixel shader. The music and the lightning give a very nice atmosphere.

Really cool game, though I'm not sure what it has to do with the theme. The models are good and the shader looks very cool. The music and sound effects are great too. The gameplay is decent, though it can be a bit hard to tell where the attacks are coming from and the shotgun attack is a bit weak.

Wow, the art style, aesthetics, and overall mood really work well together. Nice work.

I *LOVE* the graphics in this. This is probably the only time I'll ever say this about something, but I think it might look even better with a lower frame-rate.

Sadly, I think the 'Small World' theme hindered the game. I would've enjoyed it more if it had a big randomly generated area, like a dungeon or something.

I'd definitely play this again if you expanded it.
