LD38 — A Small World

Petty Puny Planet 38 by JorgeGameDev 2017-05-19T19:05:42Z

Beautiful art, incredible sounds, fun gameplay... Everything is just perfect! I was going to write here my favorite part about the game, but I can't decide if I prefer the gorgeous cartoon art-style or the funny dialogues you got going.

Here's how my planet turned to be

Abaddon by Geckoo1337 2017-05-17T19:40:07Z

That is just amazing. Very good graphics with a very nice pixel shader. The music and the lightning give a very nice atmosphere.

FLAT SAMURAI by Tymus 2017-05-19T19:08:31Z

Couldn't get past the first screen because pressing "Back" wouldn't do anything.

Miniscule Frenzy by Mieeh 2017-05-19T18:47:37Z

Very cool little platformer you got there. The simple sprites together form some very neat visuals.

Supermarket Sneak by Rick 2017-05-19T17:44:01Z

Great game overall!

Very easy to play and understand the rules of the game, so great design! The graphics and sounds create an unique theme for the game.

The only note I want to add is that I would like to see diagonal movement, but I understand why there is none.

Wake Up ! by GoZz 2017-05-19T18:02:24Z

The graphics are great, giving the game an interesting aesthetic. Though I'd say you have work to do on the movement/collision systems. Also, as some people pointed out, I'd suggest swapping the A and Q functions. But overall the game has potential. Keep doing a good job :)

Goblin Assault by Syndelis 2017-05-09T17:22:13Z

@lukuluk Thanks, I'm really glad you liked the graphics! Sorry for not having much to do while the waves don't start, initially we were going to have some different materials, but they had to be cut :(

@richard-michael-smith The difficult is more on the hard side because of the playtesters, really. If I continue to develop it, I'll for sure lower the difficulty, thanks! As for the audio, the game doesn't really have any. I thought for sure that I had opted out of that category, thanks for noticing it.

@rick Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to build for Mac without having one with GMS2 and I don't have the modules for Web. Sorry :(

Goblin Assault by Syndelis 2017-05-18T17:26:09Z

@geckoo1337 Assuming you are using the .exe file, you are probably just opening the installer, rather than the game itself. If no shortcut appear on your desktop, please download and extract the .zip version on a folder. Hope it helps!

Goblin Assault by Syndelis 2017-05-18T22:51:01Z

@coozmy First wave contains 3 Goblins, so, probably, the other 2 destroyed the crystal. They do come from different sides and witha little dealy in-between them. About the GUI, it is tied to the character so it was easier to code given the small amount of time we had. Kinda surprised anyone noticed it though.

Goblin Assault by Syndelis 2017-05-19T18:23:08Z

@rick There might be a bug where, if the game is running under 60fps, the 38s counter will be a lot longer, so that may be what you experienced. Me and my team tweaked the time between waves several times to make sure it's both challenging and fair to play with. As for the map, great suggestion! Whenever I get to work on the next version, it'll, for sure, include it. About the exploration, the "fear" you feel of exploring and losing the game is actually our intention. That's why we've made the Scavanger enemy that appears on waves 3, 6 and 9. It only appears during those waves and doesn't try to attack the crystal as its only objective is escaping the island. The idea is, if you want to get its buffs and drops, you have to be confident enough on your constructions skills that your base will be able to defend itself. Having said that, adding visual indications of where your crystal is and when it's being attacked is, indeed, needed, so thanks for suggesting it.

@mikeware Fullscreen is definitely a must-have and will - for sure - be added on the next version as well as the minimap idea. Thanks for your interest on playing the next version, it really means a lot to me.

@himeija I tried my best to make the objectives clear, but I might have to do some work on that part. Not seeing the entirety of the UI may be due to your screen resolution. The game is currently available in both 1024x768 and 1536x1152, so please make sure your screen is big enough. Tutorial was originally planned but had to be cut to save us some time, though it's the #1 thing I want to add on the next update, so keep an eye on it :)

Goblin Assault by Syndelis 2017-05-19T20:20:46Z

@tony-godfrey The controlls might not be the most natural, but they are not much different than RPGs and FPSs, really. Thanks for the feedback, though! Negative feedback sometimes is more important than the positive ones, so I'm really glad you posted yours.

@moski I feel the same way as you feel about other Tower Defense games. To be honest, I have played only 3 tower defense games on my whole life, with my favorite one being System Defender, from the original Club Penguin. I'm really happy to know that you liked the fast paced gameplay, it really was my main concern while making the game.

The art is inconsistent because each member of the team did something to contribute to it. The enemies, main character, the "resource seeds" and the axe were made by me; All of the ground tiles were made by Tiacoei; Resources, drops, sword and pickaxe were made by Caketo. As noone was really good at drawing, we felt like doing our own styles would be better to design, even if it meant to compromise the consistency.

I'm really happy that you enjoyed your way into protecting the crystal and I hope you've reached the boss, because tons of work were spent doing it.

Thanks for the great and in-depth review!

Save the Hats by Gruhh 2017-12-06T14:57:58Z

I was relatively liking the game... Until I got my hands in the special hats!! Now I totally love this!

Musics and graphics are *just* amazing, and the game overall is pretty fun. The only thing that was actually bothering me is the main character's slow movement speed, but I understand that this choice was made because of the hat balancing feature.

Abraços do Espírito Santo :flag_br: !

A Platformer for Ants by Elendow 2017-12-07T16:24:01Z

The game was pretty fun and interestingly challenging, but one big concern I have is the camera's mechanic and how it should affect the level design. As the camera changes drastically, instead of a slow and smooth zooming out, it's pretty easy to die to nearly placed traps, so I suggest not placing traps directly near points where the camera will zoom out.

Other than that, great submission!

Jazzy Beats by Moski 2017-12-06T18:52:15Z

As always, the best drawn and funniest game I've played was made by you guys.

Sound and art are amazing; that "squashy" feel when the attack animation is starting is just so well made.

Now, my favorie part is that the menu buttons play a different note whenever the mouse hovers it. It's so simple yet a nice lil' touch.

Parabéns!

Speed Demon by Incredible Ape 2017-12-06T16:59:18Z

Oh wow, this is definitely amazing. Awesome art and parallax, it really gave a cool depth.

The controls are hard, but this is actually what makes the game fun and I really like it.

The only con I cound find here is the lack of audio haha.

TL;DR: My best score is 3195 and noone can dethrone me.

Mistral - Wave-based Survival Retro Game by Syndelis 2017-12-05T13:48:35Z

@danman113 Thank you very much! I aimed for that specific feeling :)

@lance-krasniqi PICO-8 is the best, man! Thanks for the compliments as well haha <3

@virtual-turtle-studio Although the bats somewhat hard to hit with the sword from below, you can still shoot them with arrows while you jump. With that being said, I may adjust the knockback, because it's really smash 300% haha. Ty for the suggestions!

@liquidream Yeah, the bats are a pain haha, which was kinda the way I wanted them, but they might need a slight nerf. Thanks for playing the game!

Mistral - Wave-based Survival Retro Game by Syndelis 2017-12-05T15:32:38Z

@potti Considering how hard it is, I don't think anyone is good at it haha. Ty for playing it!

Mistral - Wave-based Survival Retro Game by Syndelis 2017-12-06T03:23:49Z

@mikomikisomi Very short and very hard, that's how I like it.

Nah, puns aside, thanks for the compliments, hope you had a good time with it ;)

@hertz14 Oh wow, I'm really grateful for your comment, thanks for all the compliments! I do also share of your opinion about the bats, their difficulty is what makes them unique.

I will be looking into expanding this game post-LD, and one of the first things I want to do is add a cut enemy from the game; Slimes.

With that being said, I hope you end up loving Pico-8 as much as I do, it's a really cool piece of software for coding enthusiasts and you call pull uncredible results with it, given the right skills.

@aj-jones Thanks, although the choice might not seem like the best for game jams, I love the idea of doing *almost* everything by yourself. And yes, the hitbox of dagger X bat is a bit off, and I will be fixing it on later updates, if I do end up continuing the game after the Jam is done.

Mistral - Wave-based Survival Retro Game by Syndelis 2017-12-06T14:44:36Z

@gruhh Opa! Muito bom ver mais um brasileiro abordo :)

Valeu por dar uma olhada no jogo!

Mistral - Wave-based Survival Retro Game by Syndelis 2017-12-06T16:45:25Z

@hbocao Welcome to Pico-8, you're limited to a 128x128 screen, there is **no** way to get a bigger screen. If you actually mean scailing the screen, you can toggle the **Fullscreen** button on the [itch.io page](https://syndelis.itch.io/mistral).

Controls feel floaty because of how limited of a screen you have.

The difficulty has a reason behind it; As our choice of engine was a fantasy retro console, we really wanted it to feel like an 80s/90s game, as you can tell by the cover art. Games made in this era were short in content, but had extremely high difficulty levels, in order to keep people playing it for longer, compensating the lack of content.

With that being said, I hope you had a good time with it and didn't rate it low on all categories solely because of your own difficulties with the game, as this is a recurrent thing I've faced during other Ludum Dare's.

Mistral - Wave-based Survival Retro Game by Syndelis 2017-12-07T15:53:43Z

@svr-audio Os Brs estão por toda parte :) haha. Thank you for all the compliments, and sorry for the walking animation hehe, we were about to miss the deadline. Abraços e obrigado mais uma vez !!

@moski Yeah, the system did limit some aspects of the game, but in the end I think that's its charm.

Abraços direto do Brasil :)

@elendow Thank you for enjoying it, and thank you for thinking the results were so impressive haha.

About the coins, I made them spawn 50 pixels away from the player, but that is not much considering the movement speed, so I'll need to patch it on a later update. Thank you again!

@jiayjo The agressiveness you're referring to might be the fact that the notes are basically square waves, due to Pico-8 limitations.

10 inches or less by Almost Panda Studio 2017-12-07T16:10:42Z

Amazing entry, I can't describe it with words. Art and sound blew me away ~~(and my slime as well)~~

At first I didn't think I would actually play until the end because I thought it was too much, but 15 minutes in and I was already nearing the end, which just shows how good of a pace you have going on the game :)

E obviamente não posso deixar de mandar um abraço na nossa língua nativa, hehe. Abraços a todos do time, e espero ver mais projetos seus no futuro!

Vermin by Hertz14 2017-12-06T03:33:54Z

That was a good load of fun; It did take some minutes to figure out how the followers move, but once I got the hang of it, I was invincible!.... Until I hit a house, that is.

Overall really cool piece of game, great graphics and sound design.
