LD17 — Islands (71)

Baby Leviathan: Eat All Fishies by ExciteMike

Excellent controls, it became quite natural after a few levels (even though it remained challenging to catch a particular fish in open water). Game lacks negative feedback as a tension mechanism, feels unfinished from a goals/development standpoint.

The tail was interesting to look at, music was fitting for the "baby" concept. Loved the smooth feel. Has great potential to be a super fun arcade style game.

Radio Silence by Terry

Amazing.
Reminds me of Myst and the new teaser thing they added to Portal. Great game, especially for only one day's work.

I don't really see the connection to the theme, except superficially.

Rising Sea Levels by jsb

Lack of gameplay is .. lacking.

Very cool procedural generation. I love the surf animation especially.

The tugboat sound made me jump out of my chair =)

+1 for a Ruby entry!!

The Lost Hebrides by NiallM

EDIT: new version works perfectly!!

This is truly one of the most wonderful games made for this competition. It is a great story, with lovely details and options to take, but it doesn't get overbearing, and doesn't outreach itself.

The artwork is in a class of its own. I like the music as it added much to the atmosphere, but maybe some aural feedback to events or actions would add to the immersion.

I imagine a longer version of this game, one that doesn't rely on pure luck, or has a number of options to reduce the time constraints actively. I would love to see any further work you do in this direction.

The Adventures of Archie Pegalo by rogual

A few of the platform configurations could be optimized. For instance, I didn't know I needed a key to continue until after I had made a one-way jump, but then it was too late and I had to go back much further.

The music is great, but somehow it doesn't seem to fit the theme very well.

All in all, loved the graphic style and bizarre world presented (including surreal ending). All of this is imagery I get whenever I become dehydrated on a deserted island.

108 seconds of loneliness by Draknek

Really nice idea, great graphic style (though very underdeveloped). Tough puzzles are tough!

Connection to the theme is a bit weak.

Arcipelago by 1009

The world's first hydrophobic island.

Treasure Tub by Jonny D

I was sure the audio was music! It syncopated pretty well, but grated a bit.

Nice graphics. Things jumped around a little, hard to tell what was on purpose and what was a bug.

Intercontinental Drift by hamburger

Love the concept and the gradient representation with particles was excellent. Great flavor text.

The music was unbearable (also kind of unsuited for playing god, you know?).

Island Raiders by negativegeforce

Nice, simple graphics style, sorry it doesn't do too much.

Isles of Color by Jonathan Whiting

This is one of the great entries I've seen so far. Very high marks. I wish I had time to really go through and collect everything.

The only thing that bothers me is the sound, despite how great the combination scheme is.

I'm really, really impressed.

Hockey Island by crackerblocks

So this is what would happen if we increased tectonic plate movement speed a little? Very realistic.

One of the few entries that made me guffaw unabashed out loud. Can't wait to play it with someone else.

islands by increpare

is this some kind of thinly-veiled critique on the chosen theme?

I am a great fan of your work, but I don't get everything you've done. So ok.

YOU ARE ISLAND. by SpaceManiac

I can't tell if it's good or bad when it gets pixellated. I think it's good, but I have no idea what I did to get it, or why it stopped!

Isolated Empire by Daz

I'm a big, big girl, in a big, big world.

Artillery Isles by Entar

Great game!!!

Very nicely polished, quick to get the hang of. I am sure some further tuning as to rates and prices would make things more challenging and interesting. I loved the level with the huge middle island.

Music a bit repetitive, could use a few more feedback-y kind of sounds. Having multiple islands under your control leads to a kind of orgy of colors, and it's hard to keep track of which one is nearly dead.

AI is perfectly acceptable for a 48-hour game, having network/multiplayer along with the extra fine-tuning and maybe a few random events and upgradeable weapons could turn this into a really, really fun game.

Great job!

A Fishing Adventure by Sophie Houlden

Another LD gem!! The possibilities shown here are really endless. These few levels are a great showcase. I really, really loved the concept.

This could easily be extended in a full-length game. It demands sound and about 200 levels.

Great work.

Galapagos by jovoc

Nice fresh graphics approach!!! The turn-based aspect got to me, though. I managed to get trapped between two pink-animals on a narrow bridge. (My luck.)

It would be interesting to see where this goes. Great music!

A Practical Survival Guide for Robots by Stoney

wonderful graphics and music. The feeling is extremely lonely and wonderful.

Monkey Islands by Wiering

Graphics and audio are excellent!!! Great title, too. Would be fun to have the monkey move faster, and some actual gameplay.

Clean the Island!! by jfroco

Good effort, very nice and clear graphics. I felt the theme was kind of tacked on. Great music! I liked the logistic complications of being surrounded by mice. There are probably interesting levels to be made.

Eviction by Wobly

Really, really great idea! Excellent graphics. Gameplay is a bit tedious, however.

They Came From the Ocean by bluescrn

So great!!! It is a bit easy, because of the very high jumping power and the fact that the creatures only move on land. Controls were pretty good, and the swimming mechanic was great too. Sounds are a bit tedious, and would be much more intense if there were limited ammo (or you had to make pickups).

Loved the graphics, simply gorgeous. The monsters are very sweet.

Gaiadi by xerus

Agree with total unbalance-ness. It took me a few tries to win. The last time, I built two suppliers, and I felt like I was cheating (always had nearly unlimited ammo). The enemies were relentless, though, so it was a close battle. Also, maybe some kind of upgrade mechanic could help (or at least a "demolish" option, so I can replace old buildings).

The graphics are special, consistent, and interesting.

Great, refreshing gameplay.

Floating Islands by arielsan

Gorgeous graphics on this one. Sound design is also very strong (though missing music).

I liked the jumping mechanic. However, nothing stops you from jumping at full power almost every time. The first few levels can be won in a single well-aimed jump. Maybe a timing-sensitive mechanism, or perhaps gusts of wind blowing you off course at high altitudes could help keep things spicy.

Nice job on the checkpoints, though! It made the game a little too easy, but it's better than being frustrating.

Good work, overall!!

ICELAND, OR: How I learned to stop caring and love Eyjafjallajokull by drakfyre

I was really nonplussed when it started, but I waited patiently until Level 5, as you said. Things really did get interesting. I made it until 12 before being thrown catastrophically into the ocean. Quite a lot of fun here.

The physics aren't bad, and the sparse graphics don't detract. I love the death sound.

Simcano by Nora Shishi

As jovoc said, only understood how to play because of comments. VERY interesting game. The rising price of raw island really keeps it difficult. Good work.

Iceland and the volcanic ASH of DOOM by Rolf

One of the bizarre games, yet fitting for the theme (and current events). Very good idea, but it gets old very fast.

Island Guns by pubby8

Great concept.

Every Man Is An Island by brian

Haha, very nice literal interpretation =)

Really nice graphics going there. I love the whale.

A bit short, and maybe could use some character-movement tuning (like another game I know of ...). Also, sound would greatly improve it.

Good work!

Islands!?! Curses!?! by chrica

sorry, crashes with no info =(
I had similar problems with Pygame->exe last compo.

Looks cool from screenshots....

False Flag by Baiame

Comp gets bogged down incredibly fast whenever too many sprites appear. This really impacted input speed too, so I'm never sure if it registered the "retreat" command or not, and I find I have already selected a second destination by clicking again.

Really intriguing idea, visual style isn't bad either. The most critical part of this is conveying what is happening to the player, which I feel is missing (this isn't just a readme issue). I imagine the size of the colored circles indicates the outcome of the battles, but it doesn't seem to be enough feedback.

Also, if you hadn't said they were islands in the description, I would hardly have known. It is more like communities interconnected by paved streets.

Island Shoving by sander

Runs fine in Compatibility Mode, as mentioned in the txt file (I'm on Windows 7).

The direction of travel when you split an island is counterintuitive, and I thought something was broken at first. The puzzles are demonic!!! Great job on that.

Excellent touch on the seagulls. Too bad most everything else is so static. Add some music and sounds, some shiny animated sprites, and you've got a great casual puzzle game.

Coconut Island by Built by Man

Congratulations on your first! Cute idea, sweet little sprites.

Planetfall by Grieve

Gameplay needs some tuning, but very solid idea, and it was quite exciting. I kept burying myself deep in the ocean, but it's hard to tell if reducing glide would make it more fun.

I liked the multiple-grapple mechanism, and the balance between time and the blue grapple meter.

Congrats on your first entry!! Good work.

Island of the Mind by nutink

I got the hang of sleeping and eating all the time to keep from GAME OVER, but my jump got to superman level, and it seemed to tire me out in only a few leaps. I did manage to build some things. Great concept, fitting music (even if it was repetitive).

Lonesome Flotsam by Pyrrhuloxia

Great item-gathering mechanic. The world is huge.. a bit too huge.

I had a great session when a bug kept my health at 100 (no idea how that happened), and I was effectively invincible. I even found the running sneakers. And then I got stuck crossing a bridge onto another island =(

Replaying the game was hard without the health bug, and I kind of gave up.

A *little* coddling could help here. Maybe a checkpoint, or a hotel or something.

I really liked the "story" and the location names. I feel sorry that the game seems I am unworthy to continue exploring, because I feel I'm missing out.

Whales Deep by karlinfox

Graphics and sound were good! Unfortunately, they repeated themselves too much. I found my eyes were glued to the plankton tonnage meter, instead of enjoying the scenery. I am pretty sure the meter goes backwards sometimes!

Other than that, I had the exact same problems that Localcoder had - one crash, and one seemingly reasonless restart, with different island configuration. [Running Win7 here.]

Good work on your first entry!

Island Warriors by ruben01

Nicely made mechanics. I like the idea of having upgrades and the other things you wrote in the description. Not sure how those would work in a frantic real-time game such as this, however.

One thing I would suggest is to take the whirlpool concept further. I like how it spiced things up and made some islands have different strategic value. Maybe add random mini-whirlpools? Or make that central one stronger, as to enforce more delicate route planning, instead of just stealing some ships.

All in all, pretty good, and beatable too.

AlienIslands by Colin Allen

Very ambitious project! It has a nice look to it, I would like to see it after some more work.

Jetpack Island by elemental

Could not download =(

Tropical Islands of Doom by Codexus

Excellent work getting this thing together! As others have mentioned, the inverted Y axis is a big negative mark for me. Also, staying on the turtles is extremely difficult.

I really liked the exploration aspect.

Island Robotica by billknye

As you say, a very ambitious project! It looks pretty good right now, but it needs more work. I would humbly suggest concentrating on a much smaller subset of features instead of spreading yourself thin.

Mauritius by zdanielz

This is a fantastic game!! The artwork and music are perfectly fitting for the theme and story. I especially loved the plump dodo and the soldier.

It's great that you created a whole game, and finished it too. Maybe making a more dramatic fate for the Dodo could improve the message.

Also, I found the gameplay a bit frustrating. (But I am bad at precisely-timed platformers, so maybe I'm not the one to ask.)

GREAT work, can't wait to see your future projects.

L'il Guys and the Floating Islands by AClockWorkLemon

Love the concept! It is very slick. Hard to see how it has to do with the theme, but excellent work. Definitely agree with other comments regarding continuing and polishing it up. Music, more types of blocks, better interface.

Kallista's Dream by zez

One of my favorite entries so far! I especially love the music. Some of the sound effects bring to mind Amon26's games, also the enemy sprites.

You did a great deal of ambient construction here, which I am quite fond of. The parallax clouds and smudges, the sound work.

The game ran very slow, including some of the text effects (I think it showed the text before it trashed the level, and some update loops might still be running).

For only 48 hours, something definitely has to give. I would humbly suggest that perhaps you concentrate on a smaller piece of the world, maybe getting one or two levels working better, instead of spreading yourself "thin".

But the outcome really is interesting, and I am not complaining =)

4 Islands by Tozy

I really appreciate the idea of interpreting the theme the way you did. Extremely ambitious, I hope you continue and finish the project.

Island Survivor by shady1024

Yep, this is a winnable game.

I liked the sounds (drinking, eating) and the music riff that played. I guess more sounds would have rounded it off.

I was going to mention the extremely short look-ahead distance, but seeing as there are no enemies or dangers to speak of, I guess it's not that important. I assume you mean to keep crates and berries more surprising.

Message by belbeeno

I need a hint for this so-called "second puzzle".

Artifact Hunt by allen

Not much in the way of gameplay. Love the shaded atmosphere, music went very well with it.

Congrats on your first, it's quite an impressive visual experience.

Island Escape by NateNaterson

Best mspaint graphics yet. Really great look and feel, extremely consistent. The platforming was a bit fickle even though I do agree with the other commenters that it is quite solidly built.

Great light-hearted atmosphere, and I just love the world-map.

SkyLands by Diet Chugg

Great music and variety!

Graphics were cute, could have used sound effects. The start-over gameplay is a bit frustrating.

Island Hopping by Riley Adams

TONS of fun!!!!!!

The music really got me in the mood, but it got old quick.

Great idea, having the different difficulty settings. I was able to master "Easy" before moving on.

Excellent work.

Awesome LifeBoat Game by IK1985

As fresh as the music and sounds are, it gets kind of grating after 3 minutes.

Nice idea, but gameplay needs more tightening (controls and collisions especially).

Nice graphic effect with the vignetting, maybe a future version could use the audio cues in order to "see" in the dark better. (In this version, you hear the "help"s when the survivor is in visual range.)

Good work, keep it up.

Savory Sea Hoss by SonnyBone

WOW, amazing and strange game. Great music, great graphics. Good and interesting gameplay.

The only problem I feel it has is the "questionable accuracy" of the shots. This is obviously on purpose, but I think it needs to be more skill-oriented, instead of learning the range and positioning yourself at the average angle.

Roller-Derby 20XX: Mega Islands of Awesome by refrag

Just love the backgrounds and music!! =)
It's a shame the gameplay doesn't hold the same attraction for me. Probably because of the issues already mentioned.

Sheep are Flammable by someone

Really want to play this game. It seems to load everything, but I get a black screen, no sound.

Stuck by bentosmile

I really want to play this game, but the download links lead to 404s.

Dare Islands by XMunkki

Really, really cool! Needs some kind of balance for the gameplay. Great that you made an entire fluid simulation in a weekend.

Invasive by TFernando

It's a Brownian motion simulator!!! I think I saw Maxwell's Demon in there somewhere.

Well, the concept is definitely there, and it somehow looks like it does what you wanted it to do. Another commenter said SimLife, which might have been the inspiration.

I think this reminds me of the flaws of most entropy-reducing games; it seems unnatural to simply negate the full-blown chaos of the world.

Zombie Island by NeiloGD

nice retro feel =)
Would have liked some air control.

Island Planet! by mattdev

I like the choices of turn types! It keeps things fresh and moving along instead of going through stages every time it's your turn. Also, there is an element of choice.

As mentioned, it is too bad that the AI is so simple. But great graphic concept, and it's pretty fun!

the Traveling Salesman Problem by sirGustav

It is kind of hard to "Avoid pirates!" when they spawn endlessly from a hole in the ground. I was hoping the endless spawn would make up for the simplistic AI, but it turned out to simply overwhelm me with pirates.

The one-hit death was especially fatal to gameplay, because of the collection mechanic I had to redo from zero.

Hard to see where the "Islands" theme came into play, as walking on the water seems to be standard among pirates and your player.

On the other hand, I did like the mouse-direction attack and the sounds.

Capsize! feat Rep. Johnson vs. DJ Admiral by philomory

Hey, a Ruby entry! Good work!

I enjoyed the concept. One of the voice samples kept repeating (I guess it was the bug you mentioned about the soldiers failing to die), which got a bit annoying.

Something was lagging heavily in the mouse click detection, and a soldier/building was launched only after a second or two.

Island Balance by pekuja

Obviously a great game for only 2 hours. Very impressive, good idea and mechanic, even with music (despite being repetitive).

Hoping to see a stronger entry next time.

Infinite Deadly Islands Of Terror by Hamumu

Amazing.

On an Iron Isle by L

The graphics are fantastic!!! I am fascinated by the style, especially the tiles and the death effect.

Gameplay is prohibitively hard, however. I didn't make it past the third screen, even after killing the first snails

ps. it looks like you meant to add more underwater screens? It was so surprising that I didn't die outright when I explored there. Such a wonderful touch.

Rocket Bike To Space by rik

Music and graphics are AMAZING!
All those little touches are present. Very slick.

Gameplay-wise is a different story. I didn't mind the challenge, but it gets very frustrating, very fast. Sometimes I feel that the up key isn't registered (it could be my timing), but every time I thought she was on the ground and didn't jump when I pressed up made me curse out loud.

Great entry for a first time, keep it up!

IslandsMUD by jplur

Great idea! I think I went to all the places. I kept going south on the Dark Jungle path, and it seemed to lead me to the same spot.

The animals and characters seem to be there only for grinding material. Some treasure, some non-killing interaction ... etc. would be nice. I got bored of leveling up, attacked The Jplur, and I was killed.

Island Conflict by Endurion

Good island generation and smooth graphics.

I didn't know how to cancel an action if I accidentally clicked an undesired menu item.

Some more variety in tile types would help, perhaps being impassible or "resource rich" ones worth more to your score.

Also managed to get the AI stuck, but it was pretty aggressive when still active.

Hungry Hungry Castaways by Kenny G

I'm on the same page as Kavu. It feels like the instructions are for a different game.

It was very addictive, but I realized I just wasn't getting any better at it, so I stopped.

LD16 — Exploration (8)

Forest by increpare

I was actually pretty scared that something was going to [visually] appear and eat me. Maybe Lynch should be involved.

The 3d space is tangible, I liked that very much. Other than that, much more a toy than a game. Either that or I entirely misunderstood everything.

In The Field by Entar

Love the visuals - simple yet catchy.

Scavenger by Fiona

The lonely, introspective feel is really great. Artwork is excellent, the music is cute. However, the back-and-forth mechanic was a bit tiresome for me. Overall effort: 5 stars at least.

Zelnick by ianh

There's lots to see here! I love the depth. There could be a better way to keep track of planets, though. I don't know which ones I've visited, and which ones can be terraformed after I've found them.

Cubees: Age of Exploration by Tempest

Absolute polish ... I love the different characters on the "team".

Missing by 10Print

I really want to play this, but it runs way too slow on my comp =( I loved the intro. Great sounds too.

Soulspark by SonnyBone

Absolutely taken by the visuals, especially the empty city. You nailed it. Add some windy ambiance music and you're gold.

oil exploration by localcoder

Love the face of the "sell your oil" guy! Very nice mechanic.
