A tale about life, death and a looser. by deepnight 2011-08-21T23:12:00
That's ... depressing ... =(
I like your pixel art!

I like your pixel art!
Very nice! I like the little intro. "Go to Earth to find Love!"
Don't have to tell me twice. X)
Crappity crap, I forgot the timelapse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMQnel0_ka8
This is a lot of fun! Will this be extended into a fuller game later still?
I like the idea behind it! Of course it's a bit like Scribblenauts where too many options is overwhelming.
I would show the verb and noun list by default with a button to close it later.
This may be one of my favorite comp games so far. PLEASE extend it, the atmosphere, controls and idea behind an AI companion are beautiful.
I'm still in the process of playing it, actually, and I'm having a lot of fun. My little guy fell down a pit and I needed to rescue him but I didn't feel annoyed but sympathetic.
This really is quite fun, and I'm surprised it hasn't had more plays or feedback! The evolution mechanic of changing the shape is subtly brilliant.
It's kind of amazing the simple feeling of inertia that the rolling gives, a really fine touch!
That said, I couldn't make it past the third screen. Skills? What skills?
The music was quite soothing. I didn't find a winning strategy yet but it was still fun to play.
Um, very difficult game for me! It's not a bad game, it's just really hard for me to attack with the mouse alone.
Well, THIS is different. I'm going to come back to comment on final impressions.
Impression is: You have a twisted sense of humor. :)
I think that idea behind a large group submitting a Jam entry like this is really fantastic!
Navigating the main map wasn't intuitive, but I think it has a lot of charm already. I didn't find the Librarian yet... is there a Library I'm missing the way to?
Haha, crap, I'm bad at this game. It's still a lot of fun though, and I got up to the acid-spitting bat dinosaur boss. It's fun to move and listen to.
The film grain is a bit distracting, but the effects and audio are top-notch here for a Dare entry. It really feels like you're hitting them.
OH GOD THE SOUNDS. Hahaha!
Love the "Will it blend" style evolution too. If this doesn't get a high humor score, people are out of their minds.
Haha, I love the hook and story. Talk about loaded questions with those options, though!
The platforming is solid for prototyping but I got used to seeing "PRESS ENTER TO RESTART THE LEVEL" ...
Well, that comic was disturbing but interesting... Next time, if it's possible, include the video and the comic in the game itself from the main menu. The short film chopped up could make interesting cutscenes or unlockable memories.
The shaders made the game play very slowly on my PC, even in windowed mode, and I have around 16 GB of RAM...
Looks very nice, but not much incentive for fighting the monster instead of dodging them. Is it possible for the weapon to charge faster at some point?
It does make it harder to test it out... I'll try it later tonight.
Well, that was more fun that it had any right to be. I wish I had more spammable powers and an opponent with knockback would be really good.
Walking seems really slow, probably a deliberate thing, but it does feel very sluggish.
I love the idea and putting them to use! Very nice! I wish this could be refined and the shots were a little more effective at the start...
Even though it's not perfect, I came back and played it again, I liked the concept so much.
It does get a little crazy after a while, though...

Hammering the squares is pretty fun. After the platformer narrows twice, there's not much else to do. I got to score 4400 before being pushed off finally.
Holy crap, this sucks me right in. The difficulty level is over my head (as usual) but what I did see and replay, I'd like to compliment you for making such tight controls.
Eventually what happens is I get cornered or overwhelmed by enemies and wishing I had a bombing or explosion option. If one is gained by evolving, I haven't found it just yet.
As of right now, the web one is not loading for me.
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at schonstal.org.
Quite nice! I played the other one. It's difficulty ramps up slowly but fairly. The graphics are nice, the controls are tight, the music is pleasant and the sounds suitable.
A fine game all around.
It's one of those simple but brilliant ideas. Good game, I really liked it, especially once I figured it out!
With certain goals or enemies and adding complexity, I think that the core mechanic to this is fun. It might need a little tutorial stage though. I had no trouble figuring out that clicking on the DNA balls reveals a left, middle and right option and it regrows each time, but it's not immediately obvious.
The graphics are bright and easily understood. The whole package comes off very nice. Just wish it had some audio of some kind.
I can tell most of the game concept and I got past the door and mushrooms and such. I wish you could fire directly underneath yourself to grow the mushroom underneath you.
It's hard to review it at the moment because the bugs are so numerous, with the amoebas falling off the stage or walking left and falling off into infinity and then canceling out/restarting again.
I enjoy firing the gun, I just have no idea what is really happening in practice with the evolution mechanic of the other creatures.
I can't seem to get far and I just die in seconds...
"YOU ARE DEAD!!!" Haha, it's cute. Is it a homemade 3D renderer/engine?
Like the other two, I didn't get very far...
I feel sad to say this, but I don't think I get this game at all.
I collected squares, but I'm not seeing a consequence from my actions. I like the upward branching motion at the start... maybe this needs some text to give everything some ramification.
Evolving Fire Dash got me up to Level 3, but I get pinned very fast and then die...
My strategy of Fire, Heart then Water is working out so far, and it's not a very deep puzzle but I like the trial and error method here. Not bad. With some polished controls and different AI swarming tactics, it has some potential.
Seconding the "it needs to be faster."
I got to mass 3 and appeared to run out of things to absorb. Are more AI balls randomly generated?
Odd. It's not loading or playing for me in Firefox.
Fuck yeah, Twine! Go modern IF, go. Oh, crap, for a moment there, I totally thought it wasn't in English and the whole thing was going to make me relive Latin class. Whew.
I love this kind of trippy surreal stuff so I know I am gonna have a good time.
The jumping mechanic for the two platforms ... I have no skills, I can't seem to get past it.
It was an embarrassing 3 minutes where I realized I was trying to attack my own guys, and that's why it wasn't working.
After that, it was a bit of a clusterfuck when I discovered the other tribes. Absorbing ink didn't seem to have a really noticeable effect, but I understand there's a deeper gameplay here.
The blurring out for loss of health is a nice touch. Once I survived a little longer, it's fun to see the chaos. For later times, a minimap to oversee the entire battlefield would be more than welcome.
When arrow or arrow (pope-looking guy) is acquired, I waded in like a captain. The game really goes so fast that it's hard to react to the swarms sometimes.
Really interesting mechanics, I like the idea of getting stronger like that and the concept. A harem selection screen does feel a bit sexist though. >.> "She could bear you this child!" Of course on a strictly game mechanic type, it's fine and thinking too deeply about games is for editorial writers.
I wish I could see the stats on a zombie before fighting it.
Firefox did NOT like this Unity game in the browser... long pause, frozen, Task Manager unfroze and the game went by so fast I had no idea what just happened.
The Windows version also froze.
Okay, the after Ludum Dare one is somewhat playable but very laggy in Firefox.
Is there an updated Standalone version available?
Trippy... I move really slowly and I don't get the controls. Are WASD the primary ones?
Mitkus, it's 2012. 50 MB is not a huge download by any stretch of the imagination...
I repeatedly got this error http://i.imgur.com/p5XUy.png when initializing the program in Windows. Not sure why. But if you click Cancel enough, it eventually stops...
Some explanation on the controls would be nice.
Do you want to buy this sheep? Y/N pop-up prompt is a little unnecessary.
Um, I'm not sure why this didn't work for me. Maybe if I had a little farm and got to see the sheep increasing it would feel a bit more real. Right now, it kind of feels like a realtime spreadsheet more than a game... a bit too much like work...
I had the same problem, I couldn't find enough creatures to survive. But the graphics are pretty nice.
What happens when you evolve?
I... don't think I quite get this game.
Is it possible to jump?
A shooter mashup with the game of life is just brilliant.
This is really relaxing, a great Zen game!
Haha, I won! Oh, that was over fast. It was fun while it lasted.
Even at the end screen, I can still get turned briefly by a red virus.
The alpha fading effects make my eyes hurt a bit.
It's very pretty, great UI, satisfying when enemies explode. Succeeds where some games aren't even in the running as "good" It's hard to figure out where to go.
Those tight corridors really work against this game's worst feature: how hard it is to turn and how slidy forward motion is.
Haha, this game is kind of funny. Love the enemy concepts and "Science has failed our world!"
Whoa, movement is dizzyingly fast when the set pieces come into view!
I got it the 2nd time through and it's fun becoming the big fish in a small pond, very reminiscent of Osmos. I know we have the need to compare everything but think of them as game recommendations ;).
When they explode, I was a little unsure what was just a scatter pieces effect and what was a collectible.
I can jump up THROUGH the platforms? Oh, I love how lovingly badly coded this is.
Charles Darwin up in this motherfucker! Haha.
The many options are very much appreciated!
Aww, I couldn't catch the bunny. I'm trying the other rooms. There's a lot of narration at the beginning and text going on while I'm playing.
Is there a separate camera control too?
Looks great and has actual gameplay, nice job!
For the 42 hours competition, you need to work alone. Only Jam allows teams. Of course, it's all about fun and the rules are not seriously enforced so it's not a big deal.
The graphics are beautiful, and I love the song. If you expand this, think about combos and also enemies or obstacles making it harder to collect. It feels a lot like Music Catch and I like it.
Oh, oops, I misunderstood! Disregard earlier comment on 42h versus 72h.
I wish there was a way to hit enemies underneath or above the sprite and I walked just a little bit faster. It felts like a weird RTS holdover not to be able to face an enemy and hit it.
Turned out fantastic, it's amazing how well that all came together. No one element is mindblowing, BUT everything works really well! There's no weak points.
Awwww! This is really sweet...
Double posted comp entry by mistake, disregard. Came around from a communication hiccup near the deadline.
Actual entry is here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-24/?action=preview&uid=5234
Now I can't vote (Jam member but not submitter) but I like the presentation and the quote at the start. I'm in the same basket as you, I was on a team, but not the lead for programming.
"Evolving" the random PC is quite cute! The mutate button is even funnier. They just get progressively more fucked up looking, haha.
Wow, I won't spoil it, but that is the BEST ending ever. This reminds me SO much of Increpare's RaRa Racer. http://www.increpare.com/2008/12/rara-racer/
Holy crap, did the jellyfish get even HARDER? lol
To those puzzled over passage blocked from room to room: the round germs unlock the coral. They were going to be replaced with a giant amoeba holding a key inside and a door.
The background music is really wonderful, I liked the Zen autoscrolling first level.
The second part was a little harder with dodgy collision detection for enemies, but good show all around!
This is really nice, I like how I had to approach the bell at first. The strobing gives me a bit of a headache after a few minutes though.
The sound ambiance is really delicious here, though. If you come across the top of the maze the next time, you get stuck on the red box, though.
The PC also has a chance to glitch out near the boxes after the fifth bell.
Hi there! I can't vote, but this game beat me twice, then I beat it and I felt quite satisfied!
Like a bowl of pudding, it's not very filling but it's great while it lasts!
Darn those octopuses! Thank you for making this, I enjoyed playing what I could get through.
The colors in the pixelart are bright and vibrant and have rock solid design. It's a minor thing, but I really like the fading trailing bubbles on the fish.
Without the ability of a continue or some other method to deal with the purple guys, I didn't really get very far... I had the idea to trap the octopuses on the bottom area of the first screen, but couldn't seem to pull it off with the back-and-forth fish enemies too.
Fraps + Audacity will record you a gameplay video. You can also use Windows Movie Maker to stitch things together a bit and VirtualDub to export segmented AVIs.
There are a lot of developers here that don't believe that interactive art or visual novels are games, please don't listen to them. As far as the interactivity goes, a little outside influence might be nice for future versions: Wind and sunlight affecting things and such.
Stuff like The POWDER game is still definitely a game.
This game is (possibly) unintentionally hilarious, but I love the start.
When the green square came after me, it felt like an I Wanna Be The Guy moment with the apple, though. Did not recognize that as an enemy.
Argh, the controls are really floaty. If I'm a little person, do I need inertia and slide?
I retried a few times, but the shooting mechanic (I can't see where/ what I'm shooting but guess by intuition where the cursor is) and those falling floor sections combined were too much for my casual skills.
Argh, just the BXFR noise is too much for a repetitive sound.
What are the controls, only mouse?
Ahahaha, the combat is literally button-mashing! I love that.
I'm had trouble finding something small enough to eat, though... Once I did, the game got a lot more fun! This is what Spore should have been. :/
Also, great tribute to Monty Python!
Well, that was really fun to play. I love the art style of the paper textures, the combination idea and the music is just wonderful.
OMG That little guy is so cute
Thank you for working so hard for us.
lol dat wink
Love the reference :D
Thanks for offering a web version.
Oh, neat, text. Adding this to my "must mentally play" later list...
I really liked this game.
I need to get back and play this sometime.
I still need to play other entries, but I'm swamped in projects.
What genre of music, ambient pads?
Twine is for sale? That I did not know.
Needs WASD control.
Why does it take so long to load a game that's just pixelart and some text?
Was hoping for some power-ups or lives but I understand for the time limit some things must be cut. Seems very old-school without those features. Got to Wave 4, didn't find any bugs. When you replay it a couple times, figuring out you can hide behind rocks and the enemies fire slower than you think makes it pretty strategic but only having four hearts means death comes eventually without perfect reflexes.
