Woah that's quite hard! I love all the little details (especially the dies irae when we loose). On my computer, the game was a little laggy. Nothing that prevented me from playing, but I guess some optimization could be made!

Fun idea! The choices for what was nerd-aligned vs jock-aligned was funny (art had both nerds and jocks). I think the choice of 10 seconds worked against you a bit since I found myself waiting around for the switch to pass into certain areas, and ended up giving up after collecting a few items after dying from rushing in too early since I didn't want to do all that again. I think adding a timer that shows when you'll transform would make it less impatience-inducing, and checkpoints are always nice in a game like this since it's not very fun to redo what you've already done.
I switched into the nerd in the gym and got obliterated! :laughing: Creative idea and super difficult game. The art and music is really good as well. I kinda wish you moved a tad faster as it can be difficult to get out of a soon to be unsafe area very easily.
Nice game! I like the idea of having to dodge one type of bullet and trying to collect the other, and then having to rethink everything when you switch. Very challenging, but also a lot of fun! I wish there was some kind of hint when you are getting close to switching, so you can prepare for the change. Anyways, good work!
FYI if anyone is getting any lag with the web version, download the windows version if possible. Also, the game does not run on mobile at this point unfortunately.
Awesome game. The use of theme is very creative without slowing the game's pacing. A few areas with all one type of attack strongly encourage waiting but is not required. Those areas can also be used for healing if a player wants to be slow and steady. I think it would be nice to keep items when you lose, making the game easier for new players. Definitely feels like a game a speed runner could optimize or a streamer showcase well, screaming when getting swapped and hit at the wrong time.
The art style reminds me of hand-drawn books in a good way, like the trash can barriers and different rooms. The music is optimistic and fun.

Anyway, really cool game. I love the mechanic of swapping back and forth, and half the projectiles heal you, half of them hurting you, and swapping teams. It's very well made. Marvelous work.

Super fun, though. Love how there ends up being a rhythm that prevents you from just plowing through the game. Great way to keep the player engaged without having to rely solely on twitch-level inputs.
For some reason, the main character loaded as a black square for me on the web build (which made the game incredibly hard as you can imagine). So I downloaded the windows build and it was a better. I mean... it was still hard but only because I'm bad at games :laughing: I liked the music and the art. The controls felt tight and responsive. The concept was good, too. Overall, good job and congrats on your first LD game!
@human-writes-code what is your browser, operating statement, and hardware specs so i can try to replicate it? It would be good to figure out why it's happening for you. That way others can avoid the same bug when making their own games, not just fix it in my game.

Great execution of the theme! Especially when you're about to die from a textbook to the head but your nerd self saves you right on time to heal. Good balance of difficulty.
Simple but well executed idea! I was afraid for the first half until I found out you could regen by being hit with the same color as yours. Want to play Ikaruga now! GG

I had a great experience! Literally LOL'd right of the bat, the game is so funny. I thought the level design was great, it felt challenging but far from cheap. Everything also works together in a very cohesive way imo, including the theme! Really felt like the design pushed the mechanics your team came up with in an abundant way. Great stuff! It plays nicely and I do love the bullet hell dynamic of it. Also very much enjoy the art-style and audio. Overall I don't have too many issues, although the sound glitching during loading is a bit 'staggering' (pun intended). Maybe disabling/pausing the sound when you start the load and resuming after it is finished could have been a nice touch.

This was a neat concept. I can't really think of a game where the player swaps characters without any user control and where each character has certain strengths and weaknesses.
I'm not great at games that require being able to focus when there is lots going on onscreen, but that's just me, so it was challenging to play.

Really fun game! Very unique take on the theme. I thought difficulty was a bit too hard. It gets easier once you remember what the areas look like, but then you have to restart from the beginning all the time and it's a bit too much. Art was really nice and pretty good mood overall. Pretty good! Very readable, easy to just pick up and play. A bit too hard for me, but still fun! I like that you had a pretty big map. I feel like it would be good to have either a dodge button or slow down the projectile speed, just to make it easier for folks to see the end.

The core gameplay idea is a really fun idea and it works out flawlessly! The grahpics and animations are cute, and the beat changing every ten seconds really adds a lot! At first I didn't notice the nerd-jock changing of the cats, maybe if it had some more visible animation as to when is it going to change it would've been ideal! Really difficult but had loads of fun! Congrats!

While the art style can get quite messy at times, I still kind of liked it. It is different and together with the music it gives the game a unique mood.
I think textbooks and footballs needed to have even more contrast between them. They look different, yes, but I still had very hard time reacting to projectiles when I saw them. This is probably due to how fast they move in general. I mostly found myself trying to dodge everything and sometimes get lucky when a correct projectile hit me on accident.
But overall, nothing you could not easily iron out after the jam. Good work!

Great gameplay, it's a lot of fun and I like the idea. The graphics are great, a throwback to the high school days.
Cool concept, and I mean the whole idea of changing every 10 seconds who is your enemy. Almost like some Jekyll and Hyde, but this time it is about being nerd and jock. But sometimes I didn't want to wait for swap, so I was trying to rush locations (and dying). It would totally use some early indicator that you are going to change in upcoming seconds, not doing it instantly.
Overall, good job and congrats on your first LD game!
@bukkaketears haha thanks for the feedback! We figured that the click sound in the music would be enough to indicate the change but after hearing community feedback, we’d definitely add a little visual meter or clock to indicate the change! Thanks again.
I DID IT GUYS!! I finished it!! (I took a screencap, but for some reason it didn't save... OTL) I found the safe spots in THE ROOM and I took my time so I got out and then to the exit (so many exit signs! Lol), and then the scene at the end! Lol! Loved every minute! Thanks for making this game!! Maybe I'm ready for Touhou now (probably not)?! lol

It's a really good concept; I like the art and animation. Having to flip back and forth was tricky but interesting. I think it could have used a little more juice just to communicate feedback to the player--as others said, some kind of big signal when you change, and I'd also like a much stronger indicator, like a flash and sound, to show whether being hit healed you or hurt you.
@gwenckatz Thank you for the feedback! We are looking into adding a flash or visual indicator in the future. At the moment there is an indicator in the music.
@nash Art team here - thanks for your feedback! We would LOVE to polish up the art, for sure! Haha, by the end of the jam, my drawing arm was stiffened at 90 degrees because apparently curling into a shrimp and tucking into a couch while drawing for hours on end on the iPad is not ergonomic.
I have a Wacom Cintiq 22 but another part of our team was using it heavily... so... here I was thinking that the main artists will use Procreate only, but we ended up using every. single. damn. drawing device. in the HOUSE! ... and we do have a lot of them. Apparently I like to collect digital drawing tools, and traditional art supplies as well. haha
I envisioned a really sweet oil painting splash screen but we didn't get around to it. Keep an eye on our art pages to get updates on this, if interested... or I may make a blog post about our art process and slap it onto this site!

I enjoyed the game. I did like the use of the theme which the main character changes from Jock to Nerd which was humorous. Improvements would be the background music and maybe moving the camera closer to the main character. Good work

The concept is interesting, having to switch between dodging and catching things depending on the character on the screen is a fun challenge ! I would like to have a bit more feedback on when the switch will happen though, because I often got caught offguard while I tried to get some heal.
Had a lot of fun playing this one! I admit, I wish there were checkpoints because the game is somewhat difficult to get used to at first, and dying meant waiting a while and then starting over from the beginning. I enjoyed the visuals and the music a lot. Although a little subtle, I was able to notice the little clicks in the music that warned me when a switch was about to happen, which was a nice touch. The dog and cat having different music sounds was a great detail too. Well rounded game, great work!
Very cute character designs, and I loved the audio. I do wish the characters had a little more contrast so they could be identified with an immediate glance, but after a while I got more familiar with what to look for. Still, very fun game and an excellent entry.
I also really appreciated the blog you made on godot, having tried the engine for the first time myself this time around. I'm going to have to try out the animation editor.
@bytomancer thanks for your feedback on the legibility of the characters. Definitely give the AnimationPlayer node a look and if you're ambitious, look into AnimationTree.
@diego-escalante yeah with the game being reported as difficult we were thinking it would be good to add a mode that's lower in difficulty. Some people like the challenge but others just want to try the different rooms without having to start from scratch. Thanks for the feedback, good luck with your bug zapper game, I really like it!
@jrevel yeah the lack of visual feedback when switching makes it challenging. If we were allowed to iterate on feedback right away I'd add a visual indicator so that the hearing impaired know when the switch is happening.

It was a fun little game, it seemed impossibly difficult when I first saw the number of projectiles but it was surprisingly well balanced, as you often switched between the nerd and the jock. One tiny improvement would be to have clearer indication when you switch from the nerd to the jock - sometimes I wasn't paying attention so I didn't see if I was playing as one or another.
Other than that it was a fun experience, bravo to the team!

That was fun! I am terrible at bullet hell, but the "you get a chance to heal" saved me more than once ahah. Great use of the theme. Congrats on your entree :) Happy these two can get their lives back in the end :D
I found the way most of the bullets were "follow me" bullets made dodging when necessary very difficult. It'd have been nice to have a few have established patterns. There's a lot of content here, really good job on it! The world feels dense and detailed! I really liked the art, really really cute!
@nardandas Thanks for the feedback. I definitely wanted to do more patterns, but we were limited by time constraints. I'm with you in that I love the stress and beauty of narrowly navigating established patterns

Just like the high school, but projectiles do less damage.
Due to inconsistency in replay experience (sometimes I'd reach 4th room without much trouble, but more often I'd die in the very first or second room) it would be good if restarting took much less time, waiting for the animations to complete and then having to click New Game on each death was slowly melting the addictiveness aspect. Addictive it is though, dodging is actually fun and I wanted to see how far I can get on next retry. Gorgeous graphics and atmosphere.
@kr4ft3r the feedback on inconsistency between plays is excellent, I've never thought of that before. Thanks a bunch, it's something to think hard about.
I really like the characters. Has a cool 90s cartoon vibe. Gameplay is simple, but the level is fun to explore. Everything on screen wants to murder you, so it's a bullet hell game, but with the twist of different projectiles affecting the two characters differently. Quite enjoyed it, I would love to see this develop into a larger game.

I liked the mechanic that you can actually use getting hit as healing, based on the clever use of the theme switching character type every 10 seconds. The art style was cute, and cats are always a good choice for characters! Something like a minimap for finding the different classrooms (not showing directly where the items are, but at least giving a hint by the names of the rooms) and a way shorter restart flow (game over to new run) would have made me enjoy the game more.
I had doubts at the beginning but finally, the game is pretty well balanced. I still don't like the final room with too much bullets, too punitive because at the end. And the room with the lava floor : The shadow under the character and the fact you are hurt when only your head touches the floor, not cool !
However, lots of room, I like the scenario, the sound before the change is cool, and you have animation for the start and the end of the game. It's a very good work.
The options in french but the game in english, it's strange.
@kalendhos that language bug is strange. Is your operating system set to French? We hid the language picker and default to English because we're not translating the game but i suspect the menu started plug-in we used, which itself is translated, is picking up a default language from somewhere.

Cliquey cat chaos. A fun game, that is surprisingly bullet hell-y, like an Ikuruga that forces the phase shift.
Only criticism I have is that the graphics can get a little noisy.
Nice! Love the setting and art and concept works great with the theme (although took me a moment to figure out I have to collect bullets to heal, was looking around for collectibles). Def would have liked audio/visual hint when about to change modes, and found it a little challenging but had a lot of fun, nice work :)

Very fun and quirky :) runs well, I am however getting a black square as the player, and not sure that is intended, since everything else looks very well. Its running very smoothly on Firefox. Nice audio too. The music is fun and original :)
@freerunner oooh, we have been trying to track down what is causing the sometimes-black box but need some more info to try and pin it down this time! Need info on your operating system and computer specs. Also is it the latest updated version of Firefox? Thanks for your help!

@artofluba oh the game makes a little more sense now without the blackbox character I did not get how the 10 second theme was implemented before :D hahah, works fine in Safari (on Mac), character showing up properly and changing appearance. Will try other browsers, but not until tomorrow , and let you know :)

Couldn't beat it but the game is so good and polished!! Very nice! I liked the music ans sfx a lot. As I noticed people had some running issues, I just wanted to let you know that I played on Firefox on web version and all was perfect, so no technical issues here. Thank you for that experience!
Pretty fun entry! It took me one death to figure out how the colors work, once i had that figured out it was a lot easier. I didnt manage to collect all of the items before i gave up but i did get a few. There's a lot of content here and lots of art, good work!
phew that was a difficult game, but very fun and well made. I really like how much strategy and planning comes from switching characters. knowing you could hang back with a 'friend' to heal for only a few seconds.

The aesthetics are great. There is visible attention to detail in the graphics, nice lines and pleasant colors. The animations are very pleasing as well. Music is fitting and really adds to the atmosphere. Really, the whole audio work is great.
The game worked smoothly on my Firefox :) and I didn't notice any bugs or stutters. The core mechanic is well-though-out, and you really need to use it to its fullest to play effectively. The game is haaaaaard :laughing: After a while, I really wished there would be some checkpoints. Might incentivize more people to keep trying, and eventually see the ending.

The concept is very strong, it's very similar to Ikaruga but the fact that color change happens on a timer makes it quite interesting and force a bit more patience.
The level design is nice, you understand quickly where to go.
I like the art, it sets a fun mood. Great job on adding some cute animations too. Sometimes, since the background is very colorful, it's a bit hard to see all that is happening on screen, but most of the time it's fine!
The sound design and audio in general is very strong. Music is great, and there are a lot of great audio feedback, like for the 10 second timer and the different hits.
Speaking of feedbacks, it could be great if you added more than just audio for player hits and timer. A lot of players play without it, and it's often a good idea to have something like more feedback than one for everything. For example, when getting hit, there could be a bit of screenshake, some tiny pause or time slow, a little animation or just a sprite shake (since animations are often too long to make for jam games), and maybe a bit of color changes on the player sprite.

This is great! I love the concept of some bullets hurting you and some bullets healing you depending on which character you are, and having to try and strategise around that. The graphics and sound are all excellent, and the gameplay itself is well-polished; I love the detail of bullets bouncing off you and rolling away when they hit you, instead of just vanishing on impact.
I personally found this a little too hard, and haven't managed to beat it yet. I can collect three of the items, and I figure the other three are on the other side of the lunch hall, but I can't reliably make it through with enough health. The first time I entered the room with the damaging floor, I didn't know it was there, and died before I realised what was happening. I saw the danger signs the second time I entered, but still couldn't navigate my way through the damaging floor *and* the bullets without dying (it doesn't help that you *have* to cross the damaging floor to retrieve one of the six items).
This is definitely one of the most polished games I've played this Ludum Dare, I just wish I was good enough to actually beat it :sweat_smile:

On top of being adorable/hilarious, I really enjoyed the unique mechanics you've got goin' on here. :) I appreciated the audio cue to give me a head's up on when the character is about to change, though I think I would have also liked some sort of visual cue as well (that might just be me though).

I think the visual clarity could have been a bit better because the two colours blend together a bit, but I suppose its part of the difficulty. It was pleasing to be able to heal in certain areas. It was a great discovery to find places to take a beat and heal up between two nerds. Of course, it was only a beat, because you'd be a jock soon and you'd have get moving! It keeps things moving but lets players find their own pacing.

I really liked the main mechanic of the game, both pretty hilarious and clever, creating room for some interesting level design. Another nice lil' touch that I noticed was the music being dynamic, very nice. This is a very polished entry!

I really like the music and the visuals are colorful and cheerful. The options at the start are appreciated and the changing music as a cue is a nice touch. I didn't get too far and felt either the projectiles should go slightly slower or you faster. This was emphasized in crossfire situations.
I think describing the game as rhythm game threw me off a bit, because I couldn't connect any projectile patterns to the music. I might have read into it too much or just too tired to actually hear the patterns, though.
