LD42 — Running out of space

Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies by unnamed1334 2018-08-14T22:49:39Z

Fun game! As the comment above stated, sounds would do wonders for this game. I wasn't able to get very far, my best run had a ton of speed and a flamethrower with some range upgrades (which is actually super over-powered, hahaha). I died by running into an enemy. The gameplay is intense and chaotic, but just forgiving enough that it's incredibly fun. Maybe some directional indicators or a minimap would help with navigation. Overall awesome entry, well done!

Hoarding Hank by BarkerGames 2018-08-14T23:40:46Z

Interesting concept, very creative take on the theme! I couldn't help but see Hank as some sort of bug grabbing packages with his mouth, haha

https://i.gyazo.com/f242a664f1c6873dd4ecb32d939f69d4.png

Overall I found the game to be very balanced, especially on hard difficulty, and it kept me entertained throughout the entire game. Nice work!

Polyhedra Stackerama by rsim 2018-08-20T09:34:40Z

Fun entry, it'd be nice to see some rules tied to this to create a complete game! There was clearly a lot of effort put into the code for the orientation of objects, kudos for creating a functional demonstration of that mechanic, at the very least. The music is appropriately relaxing, and again it would work perfectly if there were some objectives that could be completed at a slow and relaxing pace. Overall nice work!

RC Adventures by teekeks 2018-08-15T09:36:42Z

Nice entry! Gameplay overall is fun, the sound effects are funny (especially the game completion lines, lmao). I discovered that the minigun knockback is so intense, you can actually just cheese all the levels once you get it by flying around them.

bug.png

Aside from this it's a really fun game (or because of this, for speedrunning purposes ;D). Overall well done!

Space Fighter by sky_fighter 2018-08-20T09:36:09Z

Nice entry, the explosion animation for touching a nuclear bomb was really good. It took me a minute to understand the controls, I think using WASD or the arrow keys for 4-way directional movement would have been more comfortable but I was still able to get fairly far. Nice job.

Where Stars Belong by NORRIMO 2018-08-18T01:33:31Z

Incredible, meditative game. The cloud effect surrounding the level was a nice touch. This is one of the few games this LD that seems to have really mastered it's aesthetic. I actually completed a class final exam today, and I felt like this game communicated a very applicable, very reassuring message (thanks for that ). Superb job!

Parking Space by SeaBlu 2018-08-15T09:18:09Z

My friend and I hopped on your server, which worked fine despite the fact that we are both in the US. I honestly have to say, this game is incredible. The music is fantastic. My friend kept crashing into the spawn station before we could put any parts on (he's bad), so in the end we just decided that it was a co-op game and tried to build the station as big as we could. Gameplay is smooth and polished. Major respect for making a multiplayer game during a jam. The take on the theme is similar to ours, which is why I chose to play this in the first place, hahaha. This is honestly one of the best entries I've seen thus far, you should be proud. Excellent job!

Space Escape by paulhocker 2018-08-18T07:31:36Z

Nice entry! As one of the comments above said, you don't really need to pay attention to what's going on with the ship, just match a variety of shapes and you'll eventually win. This concept is certainly an interesting variation of the match-three genre, I'd love to see this expanded. Overall great work!

Space Collapse by ALourenco 2018-08-15T00:15:41Z

The graphics on this were really cool - it melded 2D and 3D into something that looked great. The distribution of fuel seemed to be sparse on some matches, though. Overall a fun game!

Pole Volt by tacohej 2018-08-18T07:37:45Z

Really fun game! I would imagine this as the type of game on the front page of Armor Games or Kongregate back in the day. It took me a minute to figure out how to flip without completely losing control and falling to my death but once I figured it out I was able to get a score of 54,566. Very nice!

SPACETROIDS by newtinn 2018-08-17T00:16:04Z

Nice entry! As the guy on your itch.io page said, camping in the corner is a critical design flaw that can give the player an infinite score and make the game last indefinitely. This is the only major problem that I see however, and general gameplay is pretty smooth. The ability to drift and turn and shoot behind you is nice. Graphics and sound effects are serviceable. Overall well done!

Better Than Thanos by Vekstr 2018-08-15T00:26:46Z

I like it! The graphics were smooth and the whole experience felt polished. It could've maybe used a bit more variety in the destruction methods, but it was a fun, short game.

Super Tetron by MagmaFortress 2018-08-15T09:26:31Z

Nice concept, I had no issues moving or flipping the pieces and I cleared the first 5 or so levels. For being as simple as it is, the game is very visually appealing, but I feel it's sorely lacking some sort of audio feedback. Even without sound, the game still looks and plays great, nicely done!

Merge Machine by matt-tuttle 2018-08-18T07:15:57Z

Really nice concept, this definitely has the potential to develop into something very addictive. It plays very well as-is but I think it's missing a score counter (separate from money) as well as music and an in-game tutorial, but of course it's a jam game so time constraints :) Very satisfying to play!

Finger Noodles by vfabien21 2018-08-14T08:34:22Z

Really fun game, and interesting take on the theme! It took me a minute to figure out what to do but once I got it, the game was a lot of fun. As others have stated I'm not sure if it's possible for the game to keep track of all the button presses at the same time, but without cheating the game was fun just by myself, I can't even imagine how chaotic it would be with 8 players!

Nose Picker by gimbalock 2018-08-20T09:08:21Z

Wow, really intense game! I loved the sound effects and music, and my high score was 198. Reminds me of online FPS aim training programs, haha

The Big Crunch: Cosmic Horizon by Daniel Alhadeff 2018-08-14T23:49:21Z

Fun game! The music is really good. The slippery flying mechanics make this pretty difficult, however that said I really enjoy the flow of trying to shoot+nudge the asteroids with the ship (I'm glad touching the asteroids doesn't kill you, that was a smart decision). Cohesive entry overall. Nice work!

Keyboard warrior by ango97 2018-08-20T08:53:56Z

Interesting take on the theme! I really liked the art style and the game quickly became very difficult. I appreciate how you drew all the current controls on the bottom left of the screen, it saved me several times, haha

SuperTHICC by huskitch 2018-08-15T00:02:55Z

omg some guys on steam totally ripped your game off

(fun game though, seriously. movement was buggy - you could get caught on corners and warp through walls at some points, but it was a surprisingly well-done parody of Superhot - those graphics were spot-on!)

Maze Runner by carlosvVk 2018-08-15T08:49:43Z

Really interesting take on the theme, and a very impressive entry for only 10 hours of work. It was cool to be able to play the entire game with only one hand, but I found turning with the scroll wheel to be a bit awkward, maybe increase the distance turned with each click of the wheel. Overall the game was well crafted and interesting, so nice job!

System_Corruption by antonsem 2018-08-14T23:45:54Z

This was really unique - in a good way. The sound-based mechanics were interesting, and although things started to slow down in the tutorial stages, they picked back up after you get the allocator. It was fun!

Dis-mantle by ConorGrocock 2018-08-15T08:22:49Z

Fun concept! The color-swapping mechanic wasn't that useful because there were a lot of colors and you had to react very quickly to not get killed. The core idea behind having to manually make the stage smaller to keep fighting is really neat, and this is a pretty decent execution of it. The music is fantastic. Overall nice entry!

Claustrophobia by Benjamin Armour 2018-08-14T23:33:12Z

Solid platformer and great take on the theme. The main issue I had is that I would sometimes get stuck on the sides of blocks while jumping, particularly on level 3, but that didn't hinder the gameplay too much. Overall I thought this was a really great, intense platforming experience.

Lighthouse by n.feofentov 2018-08-18T01:50:40Z

This game is awesome. The tone of this entry is absolutely amazing, and the music is spot on. The minimalist graphics are appropriate, and the game handles very nicely. The choice to have the lighthouse visible from the start is great for giving the player a sense of hope - though it had me ram into rocks at full speed a few times, hahaha. Despite being such a simple entry, this concept is masterfully executed. You guys should be proud!

Planetary Construction by Didactylos 2018-08-14T08:47:16Z

Fun game! This was really difficult to understand at first. For some reason I didn't make the connection that you needed to physically drag the planet into the 'orders' menu, and that cost me a few minutes of frustration (probably my fault). After fully understanding the mechanics I have to say, this game is incredible. The idea of building a planet from scratch, paired with your pretty UI and beautiful planet renderings is mind-boggling. My only gripe is that I wish the orbit sliders were on the same menu as the timescale button, so you could more quickly run through tests. I enjoy everything about this, this is a fantastic entry overall. Well done!

Space is Key by BytingGames 2018-08-20T09:18:49Z

This is an incredible entry, the other comments don't give it nearly enough credit. The intro is excellent, I initially though you had to mash the space bar and consequently saw the whole "HIT THAT DAMN SPACE" thing. The core concept is pretty sweet, and I won't slam you guys for going with the keyboard scheme because I believe it has some educational value (try sending the game to schools?). The graphics are pretty decent. I honestly couldn't believe that you actually made the music, because it's professional quality. Overall fantastic game, you guys should be proud!

Too Close by Zayah0_0 2018-08-18T08:14:46Z

Although this was a rushed project it was still quite enjoyable, I really liked the concept of running out of screen space and the gameplay was pretty challenging.

Sky Dare by zchangvx 2018-08-18T07:46:22Z

Wow, I'm really impressed with the gameplay, this plays like a polished, finished product! It's a shame there's no walking animation for the player character though, I think even a 2-frame walking animation would have done wonders for the game. I really like the mechanic of having the health tied to the platform size, that's a clever way of having difficulty increase as the game progresses. The soundtrack also fits the game great, and overall I have to say that this was a great experience!

Crushed by comenoha 2018-08-14T23:32:01Z

This game is brilliant. The music is some of the best I've heard come out of a jam. The jumping off walls could be smoother, but that's my only gripe. The puzzle mechanic was really clever, I really enjoyed the ability to stick to moving walls and the use of that mechanic to beat levels. The puzzles themselves were also really clever and interesting. Super polished entry, very well done!

Screen Space Defender by Balance686 2018-08-20T08:46:06Z

This game was intense! The game was very easy to pick up and understand and I really liked the multitasking concept.

It's Not Cool by Ratys 2018-08-14T08:15:50Z

Fun entry! A lot of strategy involved here - and (at least to me) it seems the only way to survive is to go green (real world applications?). Anyways, my best score was 1695. The visual style was very nice, I wish there was a bit less text on the screen so I could take it in more (however the text did communicate helpful information). I like how the water fades with varying depths. Nice job!

Planet 'O' by Nehal 2018-08-14T23:29:40Z

The graphics were great, and the basic premise of the game works well. Music and different sound effects would've helped, and a larger minimap would help identify rockets that are nearing launch, since it wasn't immediately apparent which ship was which. The setting was well done, though!

Loneliness by Saering 2018-08-14T23:15:05Z

The creepy ambiance was very well done, I think a few more story elements would have helped push the gameplay forwards. I encountered a bug where I was able to walk out of the map by backing through the rear wall of the second elevator, but the tense atmosphere up to that point was well constructed!

Slow Access Memory by Odin 2018-08-17T00:00:32Z

This is a really sweet prototype. The sounds are incredible. The visuals are equally so. The concept has a really nice flow to it, it'd be cool if there were memory upgrades and more complicated program management. I really wish there was more depth, this is an idea that is begging to be expanded! Solid entry overall!

Memory Mayhem by ZuhairGhias 2018-08-20T08:42:44Z

This game ended up being much more difficult than I expected, I had a hard time getting more than 7 points! The slow movement speed of the player character definitely added to the difficulty. The music was also on point, so great job overall!

HANA by Conspite 2018-08-14T08:47:50Z

This game is amazing, it controls very well and feels extremely polished. The mechanic of shooting the colored areas to spread them while also having to keep them at bay is very intuitive and a great take on the theme. The camera work and animations really raise the bar for every submission.

Forkin' It Up by Eric Smith 2018-08-20T08:42:07Z

Fun game! The rocket booster is a nice touch, lol. It's a little difficult to line up with crates to take them off the shelves, I think the forklift can actually get bumped upwards if you drive directly at the shelf, which makes you have to back up and attempt again. The music and sounds effects are pretty decent. I'm red-green colorblind, and unfortunately your yellow and green colors blend together for me. I'd recommend making the green a little darker, or the yellow a little brighter (making the green darker would probably be your best bet). Overall the game flow is excellent, once you get used to the controls it plays fantastically! Well done!

Shoot O' Space by TinyNerd 2018-08-14T07:44:29Z

Really fun arcade-inspired shooter! I found the easiest way to get 20 points was to spaz my cursor around and shoot randomly, that way I would kill the enemies before they got into my area and I would save space. The controls took a bit to get used to but were really fun once I got them. Excellent work!

Full of Thoughts by Pedro M Marangon 2018-08-14T08:01:45Z

Nice concept and good storytelling. The game, while simple, was actually quite fun to play! The only thing I think the game was lacking was an option to turn down the music (not that it was bad, it was just quite loud). I think someone above mentioned that handshakes were rare for them but they were actually the most common thought for me. Overall nice job!

Crate Rush by Sroxs 2018-08-18T08:21:14Z

Nice first entry! I agree with pretty much everything the comment above mine says, including the fact that the movement, while effective, is strange and could use some work. The game itself doesn't seem to do much to make gameplay any more interesting, all it does is slowly ramp up difficulty until things become next to impossible. Perhaps having extra, player-loaded conveyor lines would make package distribution more interesting, or have some kind of movement buff while carrying specific types of packages, or something to raise the skill ceiling. The graphics are pretty solid, the animations are on point. The game has a nice flow to it, it just needs more mechanical depth. Well done overall, again congrats on your first jam!

Devil Warship Makujin by Ceuteum 2018-08-14T07:35:59Z

Great looking game! I did find it a bit frustrating that I had to restart the entire program after every death, but I really enjoyed the various weapons as well as the sound and music.

Collapsing Pontoon by Divinenephron 2018-08-14T08:01:59Z

Nice entry! The gameplay was really fun, the slipperiness of the controls gives the whole thing a panicky feel, which would work really well with some larger stages. Unfortunately it was really short, but that's an 'unfortunately' because I loved the levels I played. Really wish there were more. Overall well done!

Plant's Conquest by Sam Estep 2018-08-15T09:04:47Z

Amazing work on the audio and visual design, but as others have stated I was confused by what to do on the second level. After some random clicking I did eventually clear the game but I wasn't entirely sure what I did, haha. I was very impressed with your implementation of a dynamic soundtrack, which is something that is very rare for a jam game, so very nice job with that!

Shapes by Truc_e 2018-08-18T08:22:22Z

The gameplay, while simple, was very addicting and intense! The concept of constantly growing made it very exciting to try to find the right shape as quickly as possible and the sound effects were nice as well. Also 5/5 for humor for the font button :)

Claustrophobia by DangoGameDev 2018-08-14T07:23:49Z

Nice first entry! Very atmospheric. The hallway at the beginning actually had a claustrophobic feel as well, with the way the lighting and the angles were set up. The process of making progress on the puzzle, dying, and repeating to make more progress worked pretty nicely with this entry (not sure if that was intentional, but it worked). Overall well done!

Light of Bacterium by Blurred Lines 2018-08-18T07:50:48Z

Nice entry! The art is pretty good, and the music is appropriate but it gets repetitive after a while (maybe add some other sounds or variation?). The controls are a strange choice, but it adds an interesting level of challenge that I think actually works pretty well with this game. Gameplay quickly gets challenging, but I was able to beat the entire game after a few dozen deaths. Overall well done!

Space Invasion by Nam Nguyen 2018-08-14T07:46:56Z

Nice entry! The building/breaking mechanic tied in really nicely with the spreading-effect, I'm a huge fan of how the tunnels close in behind you. The entire aesthetic is pretty cohesive, with the exception (that the person a few posts up mentioned) being the glowing, super high-def orbs. The grass moving was a nice touch. It was a little easy to accidentally kill yourself, I'd try to maybe have the player get pushed away from their own blocks instead of instantly dying. Great game overall, well done!

Slay The Slime - Too Much Loot by Virtu 2018-08-20T08:55:15Z

Fun game! It's interesting, I actually haven't seen all that many games use inventory space as the relation to this jam's theme. Combat is pretty funny, though I'd make the throw/drag zones bigger if you can (and extend to the very edges of the screen, to give maximum room for mouse movement error) so that you can quickly interact with the game in the way that's intended. Also please make your green slimes darker, I'm colorblind and can't tell the difference between green and yellow ones (the tooltips are helpful, but not during combat). This game has a very nice cinematic style, I'd love to see this concept expanded! Overall great work!

Closing In by Cobear25 2018-08-17T00:07:14Z

Nice entry! The walls close very fast and seem to restrict gameplay, but overall the game controls very well and has a smooth flow. The music is really good! My best score was 4401.8 meters.

ChromeStuck by Inferture 2018-08-15T08:38:40Z

I was able to play this with an xbox controller. As the first comment suggested, aiming controls could have been swapped with the color choosing controls for a better experience. I'm impressed that you are able to cycle the whole color spectrum, though. That might have some more applications if explored. Overall solid entry, well done!

Greedy Guts by Slojanko 2018-08-14T08:15:17Z

Amazing work! The music, visuals, and sound effects were all fantastic, and the gameplay was very challenging in a good way. The only thing I would have liked would be an option to invert the y-axis, since that feels more natural for me with flying games. I really can't praise your music guy enough, the soundtrack is great. Really nice work!

Footprints by monetai 2018-08-15T09:57:05Z

Nice entry! The ambient sounds and sound effects fit perfectly. The color changing option is SUPER cool! Kind of tricky, but fun once you get the hang of it. Great job!
