LD42 — Running out of space

Cunctan's Square by Ajayajayaj 2018-08-18T22:12:43Z

A nice idea, and good graphics. I found similar to other commenters. Whatever you're doing between moves can take a very long time, and it really gets in the way of playing. Having all your enemies move at random is also not that fun - having predictable enemy movements can force players to strategise, which is a lot more fun.

Reverse by Goutye 2018-08-14T18:23:03Z

The theme was used very well, and the art, music and sound design were all super well produced. I'd be surprised if another game in the compo impressed me more than this one. I'll also add that the design of the itch.io page fitted the game well - good use of webfonts.

Running Cosmonaut Simulator by hungare 2018-08-17T22:07:30Z

The parallax on the background and the boosting effects are nice touches. If you want to add improvements next time I'd suggest making the game more difficult - there just aren't many objects on screen to dodge. I'd also suggest adding some objects which move in different ways (e.g. a sine wave) to increase the variety.

Air Dream by wolar 2018-08-16T20:40:08Z

The popovers and the way compatible seats were highlighted did a good job of making the customers requests understandable. The main improvement which could be made is to make the matching mechanic more fun - perhaps compare it to other matching games and figure out what makes them fun.

Iris by Galan 2018-08-17T21:08:36Z

The core shoot-em-up mechanic was well implemented, and the controls were smooth, which made it fun to play. The only improvement which occurs to me is to implement more varied enemies perhaps?

Colony Collapse by fantasywiz54 2018-08-13T21:33:21Z

Good work with all the graphics. I think next time it could be improved by making sure you give more feedback to the player about what to do. It took me a long time to spot the "play" button, and even after I pressed it there was no change to the play area, so it took several turns before knew I was doing the right thing. Perhaps you could put put popup on the play button saying "click me", and show part-built buildings after the first turn?

A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF A VALET by VikFX 2018-08-18T07:36:18Z

I thought it was a good interpretation of the theme - I really did run out of space and had to double park the cars. I was very bad at reversing, so I ended up with a negative balance because of all the scrapes. The game has all of its core mechanics, so the improvements I'd suggest are adding to the mood with more character-filled graphics and GFX for crashes.

Escape the Big Rip by godsboss 2018-08-16T20:45:57Z

Nice interpretation of the theme, the improvement I can see is that it could be faster paced.

Crystalmancer by Crowno 2018-08-14T07:57:49Z

Very good graphics. I found it to be difficult, and I think it's because I could only shoot in the direction I was running in, making it hard to evade enemy attacks while also trying to kill them. I'm also pleased to see another person using Construct 2.

Chinese astronaut by Enot487 2018-08-17T20:58:31Z

A solid little game, with SFX, graphics, music and mechanics that develop over time. I've just watched Lets Plays of "Just Shapes n' Beats", so I guess my suggestion to improve it is to have cool integration with the music

Mouse Trap! by Krooked590 2018-08-14T08:22:39Z

The cheese mechanic was good - it made me plan ahead so I didn't trap myself. A change I'd suggest is making death restart the level rather than restarting the game from level 1. I'd have been able to see more of the levels and could have learnt from my mistakes better that way.

Kazoete by Lost Dutchman Software 2018-08-16T21:32:52Z

I felt obliged to play this. Your justification for why this fits the theme was amusing, and I quite enjoyed reading random number kanji late in the evening. An improvement I'd suggest is to switch to random numbers in the kanji mode sooner - I was about to close it by the time I got to 25. たのしいです。

The Curse by jiukka 2018-08-16T20:53:21Z

The drawings and animations are good. Clicking to get across obstacles could be made a bit more fun.

Mars Defender by Mil 2018-08-16T21:21:59Z

Good sound effects and funny premise. I guess to improve it you could add more bonkers via particle effects or a wider variety of sound effects?

Shoot O' Space by TinyNerd 2018-08-14T07:47:35Z

Nice graphics, though it was made too hard for me by the enemies going too fast. Don't forget that to to doge and enemy I have to 1) move my mouse to point in a direction which is safe 2) press spacebar once I've done that and 3) get far enough away to not get killed. That all takes time!

Collapsing Pontoon by Divinenephron 2018-08-13T09:15:26Z

Thanks! A lot of my time was spent figuring out basic "how to make games", so there wasn't much time left to think of level designs. I'll prioritise it next time :)

Collapsing Pontoon by Divinenephron 2018-08-13T18:21:59Z

Thanks for reminding me – I'll get to rating other people's game too.

Collapsing Pontoon by Divinenephron 2018-08-18T07:06:47Z

Sorry @zayah0-0 and the others who commented – it was my first 2D game so I spent so much time figuring out how to do stuff I had no time left for level design :face_palm:

Refugee Rescue by William Akins 2018-08-16T21:13:36Z

The boat sound effects are great. Pjbjbjbjbjbjbbbbb. The gameplay was fun - fuel management and navigation were just challenging enough to make it a fun exploration game.

Snorton Man by Dialglex 2018-08-14T08:07:43Z

Good job making a platformer. I guess one thing you could change next time was that when I got to clippy I wasn't able to go back, and there wasn't any clear indication that it was the end of the game.

StarShip:Ludum_Dare by vDovah 2018-08-17T21:54:33Z

The work you put into the graphics gave it a good "90s videogame space ship" look. The main improvement I suggest is making the goals of the game clearer - I kept on losing the game but couldn't identify why (my eyes where focussed on shooting the green blobs in front of me).

Memory Leak by cr0w 2018-08-18T22:01:22Z

Good job with the graphics and the animation. The music you made also conveyed the mood well. The main improvement I'd suggest is make the memory mechanic fit in better with the platforming. It felt to me like I was being asked to play two games at the same time, a platformer and a "press 1 when there's text on the screen" game. Playing two games at once can be fun, but for some reason it was mostly frustrating for me on this occasion.

A D Roll'Space by Raktou 2018-08-18T21:47:49Z

Good job making your first game in 3D. There was clever use of the bouncing mechanic. I got stuck on the long segment with a hook on the end like other people did. I think like another person suggested, this could be made more solvable by making sure players can see where they're going.

Astrum Dare by Astralore 2018-08-18T22:37:55Z

The graphics are all extremely well produced - the characters, the backgrounds, everything. The SFX, BGM and writing also really quickly created a pressured atmosphere. I think an improvement I'd suggest for next time is in the writing of the female NPCs - their interaction with each other is a catfight, which has been done so often it's become a cliché. Giving them some other sort of interaction would make them more interesting characters.
